  1. The Barstool Bro-ificiation of American golf fans. Total classless dipshits. The ugliest display in Ryder Cup history. DraftKings ads running non-stop. Turning Bethpage Black into a nameless, faceless muni track. A captain way in over his head. A squad with no leadership, no camaraderie, and no personalities. American players getting paid to play. American players wearing sneakers and no tie to Ryder Cup Gala. Don't let your patriotism or Team Europe's incredible play blind you. This is embarrassing. Soul searching is needed.

  3. working in the elite parts of west austin for as long as i did i saw a lot of this. the super wealthy republicans stay busy enough in their own world- a world totally separate from the one that you, i, and most of us live in- to ever even realize just how horrible and real all of this is for the rest of us. and people will try to tell them, but they just do what all rich people do, and poo poo it (β€œoh don’t be so dramatic” or β€œwhere are you getting this from?” and the like). any time they’re confronted with what’s really going on they just brush it off and keep it moving. β€œgood vibes man; life is good; why are these people so upset all the time? can’t we all just get along?”. these are the things they sincerely tell themselves for the half second that something in their world confronts them with reality. all of this very real bullshit doesn’t enter their world, which for them means it must not be real, and isn’t something they should waste their time thinking about. again, life is good; why be so upset all of the time?

  4. It’s solipsism and laziness. Your personal experience is all that matters. As long as you’re doing okay, it’s not worth the energy to look around and see what’s happening to other people. It’s much easier to dismiss them as whiners or freeloaders, and to show your Sophisticated Political Cynicism by shrewdly observing that both sides are the same.

  5. I know some Scottie Scheffler types. He's probably a great guy, husband, and father. With an enormous blind spot for what's happening in front of his face. I really don't know what to call it, other than just profound ignorance. To say "He treats everyone like the greatest person in the world" is just Orwellian.

  12. This is absolutely what is happening. I've got numerous buddies who live in HP and this is exactly what they are -- good husbands, fathers, do the right thing, hard working, good earners, etc -- but they're either too busy to really pay attention to what is happening or they're racist-adjacent (if not fully) with things going pretty well for them, so who fucking cares? Meanwhile, their daughters are going to subjugated as they grow up but hey, white christian nationalism -- yippee! My wife is done with them completely.

  13. The thing is…those of us of a certain age who grew up in the south or south-adjacent surely knew at least one guy like that. Someone who (at least outwardly) treated people well in public. Who were good to their friends and neighbors. Even church-going. And they were also stridently racist and saw black people as subhuman (which, ironically, could even lead to him treating them kindly sometimes, as he looked on them from a paternal/superior position, like one would with a pet). Trump isn’t even that good. But I can see how he makes you feel important and liked if you are in his circle. You just need to open your fucking eyes and look at how he treats those he sees as beneath him etc. Yeah, I’ve known people like Trump. It took me growing up and becoming an adult to realize that each and every one of them is a piece of shit. Scottie needs to grow the fuck up.

  14. "He treats everybody like they're the greatest person in the world." I mean, I guess if you only see Trump at his country club, and you don't have a vagina, or you have a penis but you're old enough to defend yourself, and you're as white as blue-eyed Jesus, then Trump probably treats you like a decent person because you might want to invest in his business, or loan him money, or traffic a Thai ladyboy to his hotel, etc.

  15. In watching Oregon State vs Coogar High (I know), I was treated to an ICE recruiting commercial. Take the worst of the worst off the streets. $50,000 sign on bonus. Student loan forgiveness. On top of the fact that ICE is a domestic army terrorizing people in the land of the free and home of the brave, its agents slither around hiding their names and faces from accountability. Yet this is so normalized like it was a benign ad for corn flakes. Holy shit. Our tvs are now convenient conduits for explicit propaganda in new ways. The student loan forgiveness part is galling and hilarious at the same time. Tip of the hat to whatever sick fuck came up with that.

  17. Stayed at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Portland a couple of months ago. It has really gone downhill since the war started. They were unable to get food delivered in on account of the roaming marauders and firefights occurring in the streets so they handed us a stack of MREs at check-in. The complimentary body armor was appreciated when we had to venture out to gather supplies.

  19. Scottie Scheffler made it abundantly clear who he voted for when, even after seeing first-hand how people can be railroaded by law enforcement lies, overreactions, and ego trips, he refused to say anything negative about the police or pursue charges to make a statement. Had a chance to point out how different his situation probably would have turned out if he wasn't rich, white, lawyered up, and famous, and he had zero desire to take it.

  20. Update from the Guardian Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his top military commander have said Russian offensives failed to meet their goals and Moscow was suffering heavy losses on the battlefield. Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address on Friday that Ukrainian forces had inflicted heavy casualties on Russian troops in a counteroffensive near Dobropillia in the eastern Donetsk region. Military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi told reporters that β€œthe Russians’ spring and summer campaign has effectively been disrupted”. Zelenskyy disputed Russian president Vladimir Putin’s account that his forces were achieving their battlefield goals. β€œFor some time they have been forced, year after year, to invent new reasons why the deadlines they announced keep getting pushed back,” he said. Syrskyi said Russian plans to create a β€œbuffer zone” in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions in the north and north-east, to take Pokrovsk and to capture all of Donetsk region had failed. Speaking about a Russian breakthrough in August near Dobropillia, Syrskyi said Ukraine had cut off Russian forces along the Kazenyi Torets river in what he called a β€œtrap”. He said that since the beginning of summer the Russians had been attacking with a tactic he called β€œa thousand cuts” – a high number of tiny infantry assaults. The active front line was now 1,250km (777 miles) long and an estimated 712,000 Russian personnel were involved in the fighting in Ukraine, he said. Russia deliberately flew drones into the airspace of Nato member Poland this month to test the alliance’s response, stoke fatigue in member states with its war on Ukraine and step up pressure on the west, the Ukrainian military spy agency said on Friday. β€œSuch hybrid operations likely aim to increase pressure on Ukraine’s western partners, potentially leading to: reduced support for Ukraine, especially military aid,” it wrote. The agency sent the written assessment to Reuters after Nato jets downed Russian drones that entered Polish airspace on 9-10 September. Russia denies planning to target anything in Poland with drones. Nato is β€œunited” and its members are prepared to defend the bloc’s airspace, Keir Starmer and Mark Carney agreed after drones were spotted over Danish airports this week. The UK and Canadian prime ministers met in London on Friday and a Downing Street spokesperson said the two together β€œexpressed full solidarity” with their counterpart from Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, β€œfollowing recent incursions by unidentified drones into Danish airspace”. Drones spotted over Copenhagen airport grounded flights out of the Danish capital on Monday night. Jes Jespersen, a senior police officer in the Scandinavian country, said the drone pilot was a β€œcapable actor” and indicated it was a performance intended to β€œshow off”. The EU has agreed to move forward with plans for a drone wall at the heart of its eastern defences as momentum grows for a €140bn loan to Ukraine based on Russian frozen assets, reports Jennifer Rankin. After a meeting with ministers from 10 mostly central and eastern European member states plus Ukraine, the EU’s defence commissioner, Andrius Kubilius, said a drone wall to protect against incursions from the skies was an immediate priority and core element of the bloc’s eastern flank defences. The issue has risen up the agenda after the spate of drone incursions in Denmark, Poland and Romania as well as the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets while Russia continues its bombardment of Ukraine. The Kremlin, meanwhile, criticised Donald Trump’s suggestion that Nato members should shoot down Russian military planes over Europe as β€œreckless”. Reconnaissance drones that violated Ukraine’s airspace could have flown from Hungary to check the industrial potential of western border areas, Zelenskyy said on Friday, prompting a mocking rebuke from Budapest. The Ukrainian president was citing a preliminary military assessment of the drone activity and did not say when those particular reconnaissance drones had been sighted over the border region. Belarus unveiled a proposal on Friday to build a second nuclear power plant capable of supplying energy to Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. President Alexander Lukashenko raised the plans during a meeting at the Kremlin with president Vladimir Putin, who appeared to publicly support the idea. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the exiled leader of Belarus’ opposition, told the Associated Press the plans put β€œall of Europe at risk”.

  23. The DNA evidence is apparently slam dunk definitive. This guy's past crimes and the manner in which he committed them alone are consistent with the details of the Yogurt Shop murders. I've followed this case closely since it happened and remember very well the publicity around the unsolved nature of the crime in the early/mid-90s, just like I remember the day the news broke that they had arrested four suspects in connection with the crime back in 1998 or whatever year it was. That was HUGE news but when the details started to eventually come out about the suspects, much of it from the dogged reporting in the Austin Chronicle and AAS, I was always skeptical at best about the dipshit teens cast as murderers. Especially after what happened with the Nancy DePriest murder case and the eventual exoneration of Richard Danziger and Christopher Ochoa. If the same crooked detective was involved in the initial interrogation, I knew that the cops could not be trusted that they had the right guys. They may have brought in new detectives but those mfers were using the same tactics as Ochoa. It was clear to me back then and there are a lot of law enforcement officials with rotten eggs on their faces this morning. I'd like the local reporters to stick a camera in Paul Johnson's face so we can hear him embarrass himself one more time with protestations that he had the right guys all along. TLDR version: I'm first in line when it comes to distrusting anything that comes out of APD's offices, but the changing of the guard means the current eyes on the case aren't solely fixed on Springsteen as Scott as the killers who got off. The DNA doesn't lie and if it's a rock solid match as being reported, this is the guy. I can't believe this case is finally coming to a close. It's one of those lines of demarcation between the old Austin and the Austin of today. It was such a huge story that went on for sooo long and then all these hip hot young'ns moving here, the asshole billionaires and techbros, social media influencers, life marching on, and before we knew it those girls were mostly unknown to the New Austin but never forgotten by the old one.
