Gotta think that losing Bru will have an effect on guys like Flowe and Johnny Wilson. Could possibly be the reason things have cooled off with them.

I don't see how things have cooled off with Wilson when he's slated to visit this weekend. Obviously it's not great that a high-profile West Coast recruit is taking off just before Wilson and Ransom visit, but to date I don't see evidence that it was reducing his interest.

Justin Flowe was standard EJ Holland hype with no substance.

Things haven't cooled with Wilson - he has visits planned.

So. Do we wait the kid out? Or move on?

Nothing to wait on.  Broughton is committing in the summer and nobody has a clue on Collins's timeline.  We were always going to take 3-4 DL.  At that point we'll know where we stand and if we need to find some Giles specials.

The Stampede: Resetting the 2020 defensive recruiting board

In this week’s release of The Stampede, Horns247 takes a look at the 2020 recruiting board for the Texas defense.

DEFENSIVE END

Alfred Collins, Bastrop Cedar Creek

Texas offered Alfred Collins early, and his natural ties to the program had many thinking the Longhorns would have him in the bag by now. Collins’ mother played basketball at UT, and his close proximity to Austin seemed to play a huge factor for Texas. Texas A&M offered Collins early on, and the Aggies have done a great job establishing a relationship with him. He’s also set to officially visit Alabama, and it could possibly come down to a three-horse race between the Longhorns, Aggies and Crimson Tide. Collins doesn’t say much publicly, but it sounds like Texas holds the slightest of edge right now. He will officially visit Texas next month, and he has a fall official set up to Texas A&M.

Princely Umanmielen, Manor

Like Collins, Princely Umanmielen is another local defensive line prospect with big talent. Umanmielen recently released a Top 5 consisting of Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, LSU and Oregon. Umanmielen visited Texas a lot during the offseason, but he’s also seen Texas A&M, Oklahoma and LSU a few times. Umanmielen told Horns247 during the spring that he preferred to play in a four-man front, but he also said it wouldn’t be a deal-breaker for him. Texas seems to have the advantage after hosting him so frequently, but I would circle Texas A&M and Oklahoma as key threats.

Jalen Logan-Redding, Columbia (Mo.) Rock Bridge

Jalen Logan-Redding visited Austin during the spring and was offered in late march. At the time, he told Horns247 he would be returning for an official visit in the fall or summer. Logan-Redding has been quiet since that time, and he said he has no plans set in stone for a visit. Logan-Redding spoke highly of Austin when he was in town, but until he sets plans to return, it’s tough to see Texas making progress.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Vernon Broughton, Cypress Ridge

Texas has been at the top of the pack since the Longhorns offered Vernon Broughton, and the staff has a great relationship with his family. Alabama, Texas A&M, Ohio State and LSU figure to get a look, and the Aggies appear to be the main competition for Broughton’s services. Broughton used his official visit to Austin in May, and he said that the Longhorns will be in it until the very end. Broughton would like to make a summer decision, but he said some of his visits might push his decision into the fall due to time constraints.

Jacobian Guillory, Alexandria (La.)

Jacobian Guillory included the Longhorns in his top group, but it’s unlikely he makes an official visit to Austin before making a June decision. Alabama and LSU will receive visits, and all signs point to Guillory staying home.

Jalen Lee, Watson (La.) Live Oak

Jalen Lee was offered by Texas in the spring, and the Longhorns made his latest cut of schools. LSU has a heavy in-state presence, and the Tigers are pushing very hard for him. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron is his personal recruiter, so Texas will have to overcome the hometown advantage to land him.

Perrion Winfrey, Council Bluffs (Iowa) Iowa Western C.C.

Perrion Winfrey expressed a desire to make a visit to Austin after receiving his offer, as he’s close with 2019 Texas signee Willie Tyler. Winfrey is still pretty open at this point, but he told Horns247 at the time of his offer that Oklahoma was a school standing out. His recruitment is still in the early stages, and the Longhorns have the chance to take a step with a good visit.

LINEBACKER

Justin Flowe, Upland (Calif.)

Justin Flowe spoke glowingly of Texas early in his recruitment, but not visiting Austin this spring makes it difficult to call the Longhorns a serious contender. Alabama, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and USC are all in the running, and the Trojans hold the 247Sports Crystal Ball lead. If Flowe decides to make a visit the outlook could change, but right now it looks like a long shot.

Josh White, Cy Creek

Had Texas offered Josh White earlier, the Longhorns may have been able to land him on the first run. LSU was an early offer, and the Tigers got the initial commitment from the Houston-area backer. The good news for Texas is that the Longhorns may still be in line for an official visit. White indicated a desire to officially visit Texas, LSU and Alabama during the year. The Longhorns have work to do, but they will also have opportunity.

Sav'ell Smalls, Burien (Wash.) Kennedy Catholic

Like other out of state prospects, Sav'ell Smalls voiced a desire to visit Texas but he has yet to make it to campus. The Longhorns were on Smalls early, and they landed in his top twelve. Texas would need to be scheduled for an official visit to believe it has a chance at this point.

Damian Sellers, Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro

Damian Sellers hasn’t talked about Texas much since receiving his offer, but he told 247Sports regional analyst Blair Angulo that he was planning to make a visit to Texas soon. The Texas staff built a great relationship with the Saguaro staff over the last year, but the Longhorbs would need to get Sellers on campus to overcome some of the longer relationships he has.

Prince Dorbah, Highland Park

Prince Dorbah had a few different movements in his timeline over the last few months. He originally set a Top 5 and planned to decide in August, before stating that he was down to Texas and LSU and would decided in June. At last check, Dorbah planned to visit Texas, LSU and USC before making a decision. The bottom line is that no one really knows when a commitment will come but the Longhorns have been a constant for him. Texas held the public lead during the year, and I’m told still have the edge.

Kourt Williams, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco

Texas offered Kourt Williams later in his process, but might get a visit from him this summer. If he makes it to Austin, the Longhorns could make their way into this recruitment. Williams has already used official visits to Oklahoma and Texas A&M, and he has a summer visit scheduled to Ohio State. The Longhorns will need to battle to earn one of his last open slots.

Brennon Scott, Bishop Dunne

Brennon Scott told Horns247 that the best relationship he has in recruiting is with Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. That should count for a lot, and I’m told word behind the scenes is that the Longhorns have the lead for now. LSU, Kansas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma will also get a look, but Texas is in a good position right now.

CORNERBACK

Kelee Ringo, Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro

Things were looking very good for Kelee Ringo and Texas in the spring, but Georgia took a huge leap in his recruitment after hosting him several times over the last few months. Oregon is the West Coast threat for the Washington native, but Georgia appears to have the lead now. Ringo is planning to visit in June, and he said that Texas will receive an official visit during the season. The Longhorns have time to turn the tide, but they will have to hold off a red-hot Georgia recruiting effort.

Kitan Crawford, John Tyler

The Longhorns might have made the best early evaluation of the cycle when they offered Kitan Crawford. The four-star East Texan blew up this spring and earned an invitation to the Under Armour All-American Game. Texas held a heavy lead going into the spring, and it looked like Crawford would shut things down soon. Late offers from Oklahoma and Texas A&M caused the cornerback to ponder additional visits and extend his timeline. A decision should come during the summer, and Texas will host him officially in June as well.

Jahari Rogers, Arlington

Jahari Rogers was pegged to Oklahoma early, but Texas and Florida emerged as front-runners for the dynamic four-star athlete. Rogers already used his official visit to Florida, and the Gators did a great job with the family. I’m told that there is still a lot of confidence that Rogers lands at Texas, and the Longhorns have the chance to solidify that with a June official visit.

Joshua Eaton, Aldine MacArthur

Texas seemed close to landing a commitment from Joshua Eaton back in February, but his rise in status caused him to slow down the process. Eaton now plans to take things all the way to February, and Texas is high on his list. It will be interesting to watch Eaton’s timeline as the recruiting cycle wears on. As more schools fill up at cornerback, he may feel the need to jump into an earlier decision.

SAFETY

Chris Thompson, Duncanville

Texas has been a constant in this recruitment since the time it offered, and it appears the Longhorns can outlast all of the other contenders for the four-star safety. Chris Thompson officially visited Austin in May, and he has official visits set up for Notre Dame, Ohio State and Auburn in June. Thompson seems to be tiring of the process, and it feels like a decision could come quickly after his visits are completed. Barring one of his remaining visits blowing him away; I think Thompson lands in the Texas class come mid-summer.

Bryson Washington, C.E. King

Bryson Washington whittled things down to Texas and Oklahoma quickly in the spring, and the Sooners held the advantage coming out of their spring game. Texas was able to hold off Washington, and it looks like he will make it to Austin prior to his July 4 decision date. If he had to decide tomorrow, I would place my money on the Sooners. If Texas can take care of business on the official visit, there’s confidence that Washington lands in Austin.

Lathan Ransom, Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic

Lathan Ransom scheduled two visits to Austin for the summer, and the Longhorns seem to have new life in this recruitment. LSU and Oklahoma hosted Ransom early, and the momentum lies in Baton Rouge for now. Ransom has some family ties to Austin, and Texas can take advantage of two opportunities to blow him away during the summer.

Xavion Alford, Shadow Creek

Xavion Alford’s recruitment has been up and down, but sources tell us that Texas and LSU figure to be the contenders for the four-star safety. Texas safeties coach Craig Naivar has been all over Alford this spring, and it’s likely the Longhorns will receive an official visit in the fall. Alford wants to make a December announcement, and Texas should be one of the finalists.

From: Justin

JAHARI ROGERS

One of the top corner targets for 2020 has seen his stock rise over the last six months. And Texas’ tradition of DBU means something to the four-star athlete from Arlington High.

“That’s a must,” said Rogers. “I want to go to a school that has tradition that produces DBs to go to the league.”

When Jason Washington and Craig Naivar stopped by his school for the spring scrimmage last Thursday, he wanted to show them what he’s about.

“A dog mentality, not just another good athlete,” Rogers said. “I’m going to bring a dog mindset that people can actually chill with, have a good time, and also work when we have to work. And get extra work in because I’m trying to be the best.”

Rogers and Texas seem like a great match. Despite his 32 offers, family ties to OU, and an enjoyable OV to Florida, the Longhorns have put themselves in prime pouncing position.

He’ll take his official visit to Austin on the June 21st weekend, along with fellow top corner target Kitan Crawford from John Tyler.

As for a major, he’s got his eyes on a degree that will help him after football.

“I want to major in Business,” said Rogers. “Most likely in marketing. UT is a great school for that.”

DBU, dog mentality, and McCombs. After our conversation, I feel even more confident in UT’s chances here.

PERRION WINFREY

Texas loves grabbing a few junior college prospects each cycle. They’re great to fill in spots along the depth chart, and often bring a mentality of gratitude and appreciation having to live the JUCO life.

At 6-foot-4, 305, Winfrey is a guy that could fit in Austin. The four-star defensive tackle offer from Roselle, IL dropped his Top 8 schools over the weekend. We went over one-word associations. He gave two on UT.

“Texas = family. Toughness.”
“Alabama = discipline.”
“Oklahoma = rings.”
“LSU = Death Valley.”
“Nebraska = family.”
“Oregon = swagger.”
“Florida State = culture.”
“Penn State = dog.”

“I’ll bring a dominating player to any program,” said Winfrey. “Something the whole NCAA has never seen before. I need it all and I need it now.”

Big words for a big dude. He also knows what he needs to succeed at the next level.

“I want a place that feels like home and a place where I can come in and dominate right away,” Winfrey said.

He’s also scheduling a visit to Austin this summer.

“I’m trying to see Texas soon,” Winfrey said. “That’s one trip I have to make. Probably in June or July.”

I’d like to see him trip to UT before I make any predictions on his future destination, but the staff has his attention and vice versa.

Don't think this has much to do with recruiting, but I appreciate that we continue to add to the support staff.

Didn't we try to convince him to transfer here in 2017 to back up Buechele?  And he ended up at, like, Duke or something?

Grad transferred to UNC, and was coached by one Larry Fedora.

Herman recruited Harris out of high school when Tom was at Ohio State.

And yes, I think we kicked the tires on him grad transferring to Texas in 2017.

Mike Roach said he’s expecting a top 5 soon that doesn’t include Texas or A&M.

Who could that Top 5 even be without either Texas school?

LSU, Alabama are obvious. But who are the other 3? Georgia? Oklahoma? What a weird ass recruitment

Evans has been trolling recruiting reporters and fans for over a year now. I wouldn’t worry about his top 5 or anything else he says in an interview.

Regardless, it would definitely be nice to lock up Bijan. He won RB MVP at a Rivals camp in LA not too long ago and beat out Kendal Milton in the process. He looks pretty natural as a receiver.

according to this article, Bijan plans to take at least one of his OVs in the fall and decide after the season, but I think it’s definitely possible that either us or tOSU could push him off his current timeline.

TFB on Evans

Spoke with brother of 2020 5-star running back, Zach Evans who told me that Zach is set to release a top list, likely this evening. It sounds like the list will be a top five.

I asked his brother if Texas is in the top five. I’ll be candid. His answer surprised me. He said he didn’t know.

Here are some notes to chew on…

***Zach Evans has been to Texas on numerous occasions. His brother is a big Texas fan.

***Evans has emphasized in the past that who a school lands on the offensive line would be a big factor for him. Texas has killed it on that front landing three of the top offensive linemen in Texas. And they are well positioned with Lindberg.

***His teammate Dameion George has told me that he and Zach will play together. George told me that three schools standing out are Alabama, Texas and LSU. George told me this in the early part of the month. He and Zach were set to visit Texas for the JMBLYA festival weekend. Weather, however, changed those plans and they were forced to return home.

***Another point that has added to my sense that Texas was likely to end up with Evans has been the fact that, as I understood it, he originally planned on waiting till near signing day. That tends to push a lot of schools out just because they aren’t able to wait that long. However, something that George noted to me last time I stopped by the school was the fact that he and Evans might commit together and it could be this summer.

***The flip side of this is that Zach has mentioned in the past that he wants to play with 5-star California running back, Kendall Milton.

***Not only did Texas not make the cut for Milton’s top four (and wouldn’t have made the top five) but my sources indicate that when Milton called to let Texas know the news, things did not go well. This makes me wonder if that experience might have been passed on to Evans and whether that could have have led to the uncertainty on the part of Evans’ brother.

***Lastly, Evans brother told me they plan on visiting Ole Miss this week. That was a bit of a curveball as you wouldn’t expect a player to have a visit set up only to leave them out of their top five a couple days before. If Ole Miss is indeed in the top five and you assume Alabama and LSU are as well. That only leaves two spots for schools like TAMU, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia and others.
