I wanted Samples, but apparently he didn't want us. Hopefully, Jones will fill that role adequately.

Maybe you and your wife can reach out to Jones and see if he’ll “adequately fill that role”. Sorry Samples turned you down but not all dudes are into that sort of thing.

OSU’s obsession with doing damage control when coaches leave is hilarious. I don’t follow recruiting very closely, but I guess it’s all about “winning” the optics and trying to gain any and every edge possible since we compete for recruits (especially Texans)?

Day appears to be engaging in the same douchebag tactics Urban practiced. I heard a story a while back that when Herman hired Beck, allegedly Urban asked Herman to hold off on announcing so Urban could search for a replacement. Herman agreed, and then Urban turned around and announced OSU was “moving on” or whatever so it would look like he fired Beck.

i'm poking fun at his demand for EVIDENCE regarding coaching search shenanigans.

So he does have evidence then. You basically admit that it's stupid to think a position coach would be offered before the coordinator was hired, and yet you're asking for evidence that Samples wasn't offered last week.

Jesus fuck you're a beating lately.

i'm not asking for anything. i couldn't give a fuck about whatever point he's making. i just thought it was funny he was asking for evidence about shit that is completely opaque.

you're wound pretty tight these days. maybe get laid or something.

Good chance Chris Ash will bring in his former college teammate from Drake Charlie Partridge.
He is the current DL coach/AHC at Pitt.

Wow what an incredible coincidence! Two of the best defensive coaches in the country happened to be roommates! That’s like Tommy Lee Jones rooming with Al Gore!

247 blurb from when Richt was filling out his staff at Miami:

Charlie Partridge

Age: 44

History: 2003-07 Pittsburgh, 2008-12 Wisconsin, 2013 Arkansas, 2014-16 FAU, 2017 Pittsburgh

Best Players Recruited/Developed: Partridge did a great job of recruiting South Florida as an assistant at Wisconsin and Arkansas, landing players like Alex Collins and James White. While at Wisconsin, Partridge coached and developed star lineman J.J. Watt.

Salary: Unknown

Why It Makes Sense: Partridge is respected as one of the top defensive line coaches in the country and he has proven to be an effective recruiter in South Florida.

Why it Doesn’t Make Sense: Partridge and Richt haven’t worked together.

*Looks like Partridge was a good enough recruiter in Florida that it got him the head coaching job at FAU.

Also failed head coaches.

He is someone Ash trusts on his staff.

FAU had to pay 200K what was left on the 1 mil they owned him for 2 years.
Logic says that he is only making 400K at Pitt

According to this article - Partridge has also coached Special Teams (successfully)

PITTSBURGH DEFENSIVE LINE COACH CHARLIE PARTRIDGE

Partridge has the assistant head coach title at Pittsburgh and has stability there, but coaching connections mean quite a bit and it would make sense for Arizona to at least give it a try.

Partridge returned to Pittsburgh after serving the prior three seasons (2014-16) as head coach at Florida Atlantic University. Inheriting a program in need of a complete rebuild, on and off the field, he responded to the challenge by signing three of the finest recruiting classes in FAU history. His 2015 class was hailed as the best in Conference USA.

He spent the 2013 season at Arkansas, where he served as assistant head coach and oversaw the defensive line. Under his watch, defensive ends Trey Flowers and Chris Smith were All-SEC performers. Partridge also contributed to the Razorbacks’ special teams that featured All-SEC kicker Zach Hocker and punter Sam Irwin-Hill, who ranked 15th nationally with a 44.3-yard average.

Partridge was instrumental in one of the best five-year runs in Wisconsin history from 2008-12. Initially serving as defensive line and specialist coach, he was elevated to associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator for his final two seasons. The Badgers won three consecutive Big Ten titles from 2010-12, earning Rose Bowl berths each season. The 2010-11 squads each won 11 games and ranked in the nation’s Top 10 at season’s end.

Partridge oversaw a physical, game-changing defensive front at Wisconsin. His most accomplished pupil was defensive end J.J. Watt, who was a 2010 All-American and winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy as the national defensive player of the year. A first-round draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2011, Watt is now one of the NFL’s elite defensive players.

During Partridge’s initial Pitt tenure with Rhoads as his defensive coordinator, he worked with the defensive line for four seasons and the linebackers in his final campaign. He also served as the Panthers’ special teams coordinator in 2006-07.

In 2007, Pitt ranked fifth in the nation in total defense, yielding just 297.7 yards per game. Under the guidance of Partridge and Rhoads in 2007, first-year starting middle linebacker Scott McKillop led the nation in tackles (12.6 per game), earning All-America status and unanimous first-team All-Big East honors. Another Partridge protégé, defensive end Joe Clermond, led the Big East in tackles for loss (16.5) in 2006.

Pitt’s special teams were highly productive under Partridge’s guidance. In 2006, the Panthers led the Big East in net punting (37.5 avg.) and kickoff returns (24.1 avg.). During the 2007 campaign, Pitt topped the conference in field goal percentage (81.8%, 18-22) and PAT kicking (100%, 28-28), while ranking second in kickoff returns (22.9 avg.)

Prior to Pitt, Partridge served four seasons (1998-2001) at Iowa State in administrative and coaching roles, as he was with Rhoads on staff for a few years. Partridge was a defensive graduate assistant in 1998-99, working with the outside linebackers. Following the 1999 season he earned a full-time appointment as the program’s director of football operations.

What? Jones is a better hire in that role. There's no evidence we even offered Samples a WR coaching position at any time.

Yep, why would Texas want a coach that has spent multiple years in college at the position working in 2 different schemes, that was also a coordinator on the HS level, over a guy that, checks notes, has been an on field coach for all of one year at any level. Samples may be a great coach one day, Jones by all accounts already is.

Man, I can't wait for January 2nd and the off-season thread getting started. Yurcich is the first coordinator hire I have really liked since Harsin. First post on that off season thread should be a prediction all the kool-aid we will be hearing and drinking from the 9.95 folks. Hell it already started today on Midday from Trey and BK hour 3.  Stashing this image on this thread just in case Partridge is hired.

This is more like the lists Jerry hands out during his GM meetings. Instead of 35 years make it 25 years when he introduces the list. I doubt his kisses asses respond the way these guys did to the list. Instead, they praise Jerry for being an in tune smart owner.

We had some of the shittiest pass rush in the nation this year. I am ok with this Partridge guy if he can teach guys like Graham and Bimage basic skills like the swim move.

Or ANY move.  It currently seems like they are coached to close the distance between them and the OL as quickly as possible and stay there.

For the DL I’m fairly certain they’re taught to stack and shed. Charles O with those 8 foot long arms was great at it.  The current crop of DL are works in progress

As for our rushing LB’s - we’d rather drop them into coverage so we can blitz a safety from 20 yards deep.

so this is what it looks like when you do an actual coaching search instead of bringing ALL your butt buddies in to get paid.  It is beyond ridiculous how stupid our entire athletic department was for 10 fucking years.  They hired coaches who had no idea how to put together a staff.  the 6 and 4 coaching decision was beyond moronic as well.

I'm not sold on Ash but at least he has been a DC and HC at the P5 level.  Yurcich seems good and will probably have some fresh ideas.

This is why you need a strong AD because generally football coaches, especially ones that haven't been HC's for a while, are pretty poor at looking outside their comfort zone

trying to get former HC's that maybe weren't that successful, to be coordinators and position coaches, is not necessarily a bad thing.  Its probably the advice Mack gave Tom.

Yeah, me too. Narduzzi seems like he knows what good looks like.

It's the comfort hire angle. If Ash wants his guy and Herman allows it, some are interpreting that as a lazy comfort hire.
Nevermind that 1.) This Partridge guy appears to be significantly more accomplished than Mehringer and Warehime combined and 2.) The same people whining about it are probably also whining about Oscar Giles on staff.

Coordinators are gonna go get a few of their guys. Graham Harrell was supposedly talking to position coaches. Any other DC would have brought a couple of assistants. That's not necessarialy a bad thing when said guys have had demonstrated success at the P5 level, which appears to be the case. It's a far cry from going and getting Drew Mehringer and Casey Horny and bringing along Derek Warehime when better and/or less rapey options are readily available. Critical thinking isn't a surly specialty though.
