This right here. We are the problem, just like the earth isn't the problem humans are the problem.

I'm kinda done with this thread for now, because I haven't learned anything like I stated before from interacting in this thread. If anything I have learned things about certain posters I'd rather have not known.

Bro, this thread is awesome.  Just people talking shit and dunking on each other from past proclamations about 2 weeks and lockdowns do (not) work.  Also, comparing and contrasting Governors and their states success or lack thereof.  It is a fabulous thread.

Yeah sure would be cool if there was some sort of program that provided money during times that people can’t work for one reason or another, especially a natural disaster or plague or something of that magnitude. Possibly paid for by taxing people while they are working.  What would you call something like that?

Why kidding?  That is correct. And it’s also not a terrible thing.  Public schools are socialist. Social security... it’s in the name.  Having a program to help people maintain what they’ve achieved isn’t evil.

you mean the thing I was promised that they now make me wait longer for while they reduce it at the same time.  awesome plan.  FDR was an idoit.

Just one source, but one that has been relatively solid. The implication being that there is at least some expectation/concern that the newly discovered variants are not very prevalent in the US yet and that we could be looking at one more surge in the spring. Mathematically it seems a little tough to believe given the rising numbers of vaccinated individuals, combined with the fact that with 25 million plus confirmed cases, we’re probably looking at 50 million, conservatively, who have actually had it. It seems like a March surge, should it occur, should be smaller just because it’s getting to the point where there’s just significantly fewer people susceptible to infection. But it could push back timelines for really reopening.

I could see this maybe working with rapid testing. Anything else will turn into complete cluster.

Well we've been doing so well otherwise lol... It shouldn't be as hard as it still is to go get a COVID test, I'm hoping that there's some assistance and/or DPA utilization to pump out testing and rapid testing materials

They'd also accept proof of vaccine I would assume and hope. I'll be pissed if I've been vaccinated and I still have to go get my brain swabbed.

I like how even if you wait for studies saying it’s ok, there’s still questions. When really they could’ve just asked the half of the country that has had their kids in school all fall if it worked out.

And the money excuse is total nonsense. Our school district had so much extra money left that the kids have been offered free lunches all year.

It’s not hard at all. My son woke up Monday morning with a cough and sore throat. We called his doctor and by 3 pm we were in the drive through line getting tested. By the time we were home we had gotten the call with the negative results.

That's great to hear that your doctor had availability and even materials on hand for a rapid test. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost and what type of test was it?

In the SA area they’re no cost to patients at multiple urgent care facilities.

I probably agree with Warren fans on more than a couple things, but if I bother to discuss in CR, everything will be derailed by litigating off topic nonsense from the past. Plus I’ll likely have people cussing me out. Not worth my time.

It’s easy to agree with what is simply the truth at this point. You can safely open schools for in person instruction at fairly low cost. There’s no need to wait for any massive new infusion of funds. Anyone saying otherwise, including the new administration, is trafficking in and disseminating, dare I say, disinformation and is doing so for political purposes. They don’t care about the consequences to others either.

As far as I know there was no charge, or at least we haven’t been charged yet. I’m not sure what test it was either as my wife took him through the line. They swabbed his nose if that helps?

In San Antonio you can walk into an urgent care and get a rapid test. I was in and out in 30-45 mins. I was just smart and waited to go in first thing in the morning. You might check to see if that is available in your area.

When we got tested prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas, we used Curative.  There are about a dozen locations around Austin, and over 10,000 locations around the US.  It's a PCR mouth swab and we got results within a couple of days.

There was no cost to us (or at least we have not received an invoice, but they're pretty upfront about the "no cost" aspect).

My wife and I used to use Curative since it was so easy and accessible, but haven't used them since the FDA notice on them about false negatives

EDIT: and thanks for the other info on the current state of testing, we've been practicing social distancing and using facemasks etc, but we're unfortunately getting dragged to a huge fucking wedding this weekend because my wife's cousin is a selfish asshole and would never forgive us if we didn't attend. We're basically planning on getting sick, and I haven't kept up on Houston area testing

Yeah, I could see that.  It seemed like a lot of folks (meaning me) were using them as preventative actions.  No one in our family had symptoms, but still used it.

From what I remember when I took my son to do the brain probe, you really needed to have had symptoms for a couple of days for the results to be accurate.

Have you tried just calling up the cousin and explaining that you’ll be such a miserable prick at the wedding that they’ll wish you had never come? Might get your wife off the hook.

But, I suspect deep down your wife is over the ‘Rona and wants to go have fun for once. Why don’t you just be a nice husband and let her? You probably won’t get Corona. They’ll hand out masks for everyone there.

Just make sure to bring your second mask to put over it per newest Fauci recs.

I posted a bit about it previously in the earlier thread but we had a case in our kids Pre-K.   Kids tested positive on a Weds after being in school Mon/Tues (dad became symptomatic Tues and got positive result Weds).  So entire class had a 2 week quarantine.  No other kids (or parents of kids) ever got symptoms so it appears we all got lucky this round.  But kids that tested positive weren't back today (they haven't been symptomatic for 10 days) and we heard school is making them quarantine a full 24 days (i.e., 10 more days than the rest of the class).  Is that a CDC recommendation or policy at any other school?  Seems like overkill based on everything I've read.

I posted about this exact scenario over the summer.  My wife attended.  I did not.  On the theory that if she got sick at least we would hopefully stagger it while parenting.  I didn't really give 2 shits what her family thinks (and frankly my wife didn't either).  This was in the peak of the summer surge (which in hindsight was nothing compared to the latest surge).  Luckily nobody got sick that we know of.  Although there were something like 40% no shows that were bought and paid for that pissed the happy couple off.  I personally got a big kick out of that.

I got out of two because one of them did a tiny ceremony in the mountains and the other couple YOLO'd it and drove to Vegas. They got extra nice gifts for saving me six hours of my life.

Yeah, I have a bad feeling that Autumn of this year and Spring of 2022 are gonna be stacked with pent-up wedding invitations.  So instead of being able to get back out there and do fun stuff with my kids, see live music, sporting events, have visits with the kids and their grandma, etc.  My weekends from Sep-May are gonna be occupied watching some friend on his second marriage or some distant relative marry some fat, ugly whore.  And it'll cost me everything I managed to save during pandemic.

Covid-19 is changing so much, maybe it'll change the ways we do weddings.  For instance, nobody cares about your fucking wedding except some older relatives.  My wife has had friends drop her as "friends" because we didn't make it to their weddings which has only served to make our lives easier.  Maybe more of that will happen this year and next.

My wife is pissed about the wedding and is worried about the cousin getting their grandparents killed. The cousin got engaged in August '20 and planned the wedding to be at their country club for this weekend because it'll be getting renovated soon after and "they don't want to miss getting married at their country club!!". It was originally 300 people, and now its "only" 200 people and a good chunk of the wedding party has bowed out.

And putting 200 people in an enclosed room and having a big fucking reception where people aren't wearing masks because they're eating and drinking will almost certainly lead to cases.

Yeah it'll be interesting since most of the wedding party has already had COVID from the summer (they're not quite antimask, but they're the kind of folks who still think the election was stolen) and they've sent out emails about how they'll give you a green/yellow/red wristband if you want to hug or don't want to take any risks. Just doesn't make any fucking sense when this is the worst that COVID has ever been in the US.

I don't get the green/yellow/red wristband system.  Is the red one like "don't come near me, there's a pandemic afoot you dumbfuck" but if you see a hot chick from the bride's side of the family with a green one, it's like "Hey, zero cases reported anally...let's party."  Is yellow like, "I'm taking this very seriously...but then again I paid good money to be at this stupid fucking thing...so open bar and let's see where the night takes us."

We're almost out of the woods with this in six months.  Why can't people get the fuck over themselves and just wait a bit longer?  Spoiler alert, if people are saying shit like, 'Hey, maybe we should wait a bit longer for vaccines so aunt and uncle so-and-so can make it comfortably to the big day!'........that's code for you're fiance is a cunt and nobody really wants to go to your shitty wedding.

Weird how you suggest the election was stolen types are more likely to get Covid.  Considering a comparison the stats of per capita hospitalizations and deaths between red and blue states.  How do you reconcile that?  At some point there needs to be a score keeping done on per capita deaths in various states and their unemployment rates due to their ineffective mitigation and shutdown requirements.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills when I see our media slam Desantis and praise Cuomo.  I don't see how that makes any damn sense.

Yep.  I got to the weddings I want to attend.  And they usually are a lot of fun.  I think with the vaccine we will be close to being able to live life normally in a safe manner sooner rather than later. Life is going to go on.

Yeah, I mean after all this I'd love to go eat and get drunk with a bunch of my friends for free, even if it involves sitting through a little ceremony. We've also told our friend that went to Vegas to get married that he still owes us a bachelor party some time after Covid.

Yeah dude, we're not.  My daughter is still remote learning, we sure as shit ain't breaking protocol to attend some shitfest for some second cousin or friend we barely keep up with.  Two of the cheapest thrills in life---RSVP'ing "NO" to something and knowing you just bought yourself hours, even days, or freedom.  And dropping stuff off at Saint Vincent de Paul.  At least a couple boxes per quarter of old stuff.  I fucking hate shopping, but I love giving shit away.  It's like a drug.  So good.  Anyway, yeah---not going to any weddings unless it's one of my wife's two sisters.  Even then, I think I can personally get out of one.

I am going to wait to vaccinate even though I have some connections at a Houston hospital where I could get one pretty much whenever.  I have already had Covid as has my wife.  I am waiting until June or July to get it and all the older and high risk people will have had their chance.  I am thrilled with American innovation of getting the vaccines with high efficacy rolled out so quickly.  There are hiccups with distribution but overall it is pretty damn impressive (and this is not political, I credit our pharma industry and think overall the various state governments are doing an admirable job allocating vaccines).  From the beginning the only thing that was going to defeat Covid was these vaccines. I am thrilled we have the vaccines with their proven efficacy.
