As any BMW enthusiast will tell you though, BMW numbers are not Mazda/Toy/Hon/US numbers. The N54 only claims 300 hp, but tuner dynos show it making more HP stock than the Mazda 3.3's 340 hp. And the BMW claims 382 hp for the B58 (2 generations from the N54) but some people have gotten over 400 stock. That's generally the case comparing US/JAP/KOR to Euro cars, but BMW under rates even more than the other Euro's.

A B58 actually making 400 hp at 3.0L compared to a Mazda 3.3L actually making 271 is a huge difference. If you want to win a drag against a BMW, you better have 100+ more claimed HP. But I sure do wish they would put that 3.3 in the Miata, or even the 2.5 Turbo.

Yeah was gonna say this.  And Mazda hypes their engine tech so much, you'd think going against trend with that displacement and configuration it would be more of a fire breather.

And I was really focused more on the lo-po variant than the hi-po.  You can allegedly use regular in the lo-po.  Not sure I'd chance it.

Also saw some things like timing chain at rear of block and some other curious choices that can make it a maintenance hassle.
