Two barriers of shitty little wire fencing plus a sentinel posted. It was on the porch all along, but used as a sort of "booster" to prop up and position the husks.

I'm a little bit nervous about whether either of them will survive. The Smiley Face is hanging together by a thread.

The rest of the gang is now safely ensconced in the back garage until next season.

Haven't been religiously monitoring last year's crop, but the dog took a greater interest in the area during her morning Murder Patrol so I figured I'd check in.

Terrible picture (this is the best I could get...) but things are looking fairly creepy. Whether they end up looking scary or just decrepit remains to be seen, but either way, we'll find out soon.

Could never do that in my hood. The javelinas would devour it the first night.

We have raccoons, skunks, opossum, foxes, and deer (though they rarely venture too far out of the nearby forest). Some of the things I've curated over the years get eaten, while others do not.

I know that certain types squash-ish things have a very bitter taste and are low-grade poisonous, so I suspect that the survivors tend to get nibbled at and then all nibblers quickly learn that eating them was a mistake. I think I posted about this upthread, but we had a "volunteer" (i.e., unplanted and unplanned) squash of some kind in our yard one summer. I contemplated eating it, but learned beforehand that in humans, common symptoms from eating volunteer squash include total hair loss as well as months-long bouts of diarrhea.

I did not eat it.

Extraction Day.

As you can see, last year's two survivors got a little abstract ("before" picture is the first picture in the first post at the top of this page).

No apparent evidence of the potato I put inside the largest one, but that doesn't mean the voodoo didn't take a different form...

Pretty sparse selection at the gourd source this year. We went at about 1pm last Sunday, and I suspect that perhaps things were a bit picked over by that point.

The first of three this year. Pretty straightforward.

This next one had some soft spots already developing, so the design was a little out of my hands.

This one is my favorite of the bunch, by a lot. It's just so silly looking. It reminds me a little bit of Kif from Futurama. I hope this one lasts forever.

Aren't you afraid that if you put that stuff in your doorway somebody might show up and want candy?

Sumbitch squirrels already causing problems.

Already ate the "pupil" out of one eye on the Green Goober. Caught one squirrel in the act when I went outside.

Used a few of the (allegedly) rodent-proofing peppermint sachets that I had left over from bombing the garages last winter. We'll see what happens...

Texted Mrs. Doom to report the indignity, and she had already discovered the initial damage and made some vinegar and water mixture and sprayed it down, but that was before I interrupted a crime in progress myself, so it's clear that particular folk remedy is futile.

You need to kill a squirrel and stuff its corpse half into the Green Goober’s eye. Tree-dwelling rodentia operate per the Code Of Squirrelurabi. Your message will be received loud and clear.

We have a retired greyhound (pictured here and there upthread) who really loves to murder. We usually make a bit of ruckus when opening the back door to let her out (and her tags are purposefully loud) just to give any animals dumb enough to press their luck a heads up and an opportunity to escape, but I might change things up...
