The bill is pretty far from where it started.

Not really. We're still looking at large tax breaks to the wealthy and major cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. And an insane increase in the ICE budget.

Didn't the senate make it worse in many respects?

Stop asking any question that amounts to "so what if the American people DON'T get totally assfucked?"  That's a hypothetical that will never happen.  "We get assfucked" is the always and only answer.

I guess I missed that it had already passed when I posted that. Welp, at least I have property and citizenship in Mexico.

"They?" He can run if he wants. Hopefully others get in there and send him home, not that I think anyone beats lazy eye.

It hasn’t passed the House yet. The Senate version differs and still needs to pass the House to go to TFG for signature.

I believe it gets passed in the House.

Unless things have changed dramatically behind the scenes, and maybe they have, I don't see Allred announcing something like this unless some of the big money power brokers in the party had green lit it in advance.

I know you think this all controlled by some cabal of the wealthy, but it's not.  Candidates make these decisions.  Does he have donors lined up?  Sure, and better yet, he has call lists. There are candidates who view taking on a established incumbent as a two-cycle commitment, although honestly I am not convinced if second-runs have any better success than virgins.

They're not all wealthy, but there is definitely a Democratic establishment in-group especially at the state and local levels in Texas. And that establishment in-group absolutely plays favorites and will bend the rules to help the candidates they prefer.

A competent party should have a data team that would've put together a table showing how this the Big Bullshit Bill would affect the constituencies of every county, congressional district, and state, blasting that info out to every local news station and newspaper across the country along with every state and local official of any capacity (regardless of party) and updating it with every change throughout the negotiations. They would also have provided key talking points to any state/local Democratic official and leader of any stripe, all the way down to the local precinct captain, with specific instructions on how to go on a furious attack against any and every Republican at every level of government.

Shit, if the Upshot's data team can aggregate this shit with updates on the fly, then a national party should be able to do it, too.

Sure.  But at the end of the day, their power is extremely limited.  They are basically a lobby, but ultimately the candidates decide to run or not.  The Party can help open some doors and make introductions, but Allred already has those.  What rules do you think they can bend that significantly impacts a candidate's campaign? Who goes on a slate card?  Who gets to speak at a meeting? I appreciate the blood-soaked feuds that go into that kind of shit that ultimately matters very little. One tweet from AOC drives more campaign cash than most state parties.

The intraparty squabbling is annoying as shit, full of flawed people who get off on the little modicum of power they've scratched out.  But you can get that same dynamic at any college student government. When you step back a couple of steps, it's more funny than sad.

Almost a third of Congressional Democrats is ten years past retirement age, and that's not even counting Schumer from this list.

Allred got the jump on things last go around because the only other candidate that actually stood a chance was Roland Gutierrez.  And due to all the special sessions, Roland couldn't do any campaigning and fell behind in fundraising.  Gutierrez was the favorite by far of the folks on the ground, the local organizers.  Allred was the opposite.  He did very little when it came to campaigning in public.  What he did do a lot of was coming into counties and being hosted by the local big money donors, regardless of party.     The DNC stood by and let Schumer, Jeffries, and others tap Allred as their choice and had already funneled a large chunk of change into his campaign through the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.  Like millions of dollars.  All that came in before Roland even announced.  Big money old established donors, particularly in Dallas, jumped onto that bandwagon and never got off.

The problem we had in 24 and apparently will have in 26 is that DC is picking our candidates for us, at least at the senate level.  They silently endorse their choice with dumping money into their coffers.  Then turn around and lecture us on the state level how we should not put our thumbs on the scales by endorsing or denouncing any candidates.  It's bullshit, but that is what we face.  I somewhat understand it, but at the same time how do you ever build a bench, much less put together a good slate that actually has a chance at winning anything.  If Allred wins the primary again, then once again we are faced with trying to whip up enthusiasm to go to the polls for the rest of the races, while the top spot is held by a full on dud.

Of course this would be a moot point if voters actually cared enough to educate themselves on candidates.  But in their defense, I applaud them for even going to the polls after the endless barrage of fundraising texts and calls they get daily.

I don’t think the Dems have money so they aren’t dumping money anywhere. Swalwell was on PSA and they were discussing how big money dem donors are hesitant right now.

I think that if we are still around in 25 years we will finally see a 3rd party, but it will be the young Democrats splitting off to form their own party. The national Democrats are a rudderless ship content to go quietly into the night. More AOC's and Jasmine Crockett firebrands need to emerge and less of the Schumer and Jeffries type of politicians who are abject cowards shirking their responsibility to stand up to the fascists destroying America.

Take a page from Mamdani’s playbook. Stand in your beliefs.

There was an article in The NY Times recently about the campaign strategy that that Trump and Bernie employed successfully that I can’t stop trying to use in though experiments.

Basically, the author proposed that they ran against the party, not just in rhetoric but that the party’s moderating influence tempers a message that’s more attention getting when it’s extreme.

You can’t just be for smart immigration enforcement on the right, Trump is for zero immigration, build a wall to keep everyone out, make it impossible for unfriendly nations to even send tourists here, etc.  if you’re Bernie, it’s Medicare for all.  If you think the NYC Mayoral race is indicative of anything, it’s embracing things like rent freezes and free day care.

In the author’s opinion, it’s not just running to the natural extreme in your own party, either (in other words, it doesn’t mean the most partisan candidates win); as these candidates might (or should) have heterodox views (Trump is a better example of this, when he touts things like a tax break on tips that would be anathema to a Paul Ryan type).

Anyway, I was thinking of version of this on immigration in which a Democratic candidate runs a pro-immigration platform.  The Democratic Party is terrified on seen as being soft on enforcement, weak on defense, and overly concerned with alienating coalition groups,  but it’s almost impossible to find moderate positions on those issues that don’t sound wildly uninspiring (basically, you end up with Colin Alred).

Imagine a candidate who says “Immigrants aren’t the problem, in fact we need more of them.   I propose we tear down the wall and make anyone coming to the US a temporary resident if they can get here.”  Another version of this might be “I can’t support Israel’s wars in Gaza and Iran purely on the basis that I don’t support violence for any reason.”

If this author is correct, I would at least think there will be primary candidates in 2026 that will explore better whether this works.

Well of course there will be meddling. We are dealing with an openly fascist regime that is trying to squash anything and anyone who is against them. The younger Democrats are ready to take this stuff on, but the old guard that is all about decorum and making sure it's business as usual is standing in their way. The DNC is like a football team still running the option while everyone else is running the spread. It doesn't matter that option football is a dinosaur offense to them. They do what they've always done because it's what they know. Bernie is the only elder statesman that wants to push things forward. I really believe that the alienation of the younger Democrats will lead to a split in the party at some point because what is happening now is not sustainable when one party is openly doing evil things to a significant portion of our population with little pushback at the national level.

If there was a president that ran and gave nothing but sports opinions and went on knowledgeable rants about all sports and pop culture stuff they would win. The DNC still lives in a world where they think people outside of the people who are already voting for them give a shit about policy.

MAGA has legitimately no platform. Its just whatever hate and violence shit they come up with to distract people while they ransack everything. Sure a bunch of us have our eyes open, but the people everyone should be really trying to get involved or make a change for are the ones who love in an alternate reality where none of this impacts them or they want to ignore it etc.

This.

Here's the TLDR version: stop trying to appeal to smart, informed people.  They are too small a voting bloc to make a difference.  You MUST win the absolute mouth-breathing idiot vote.  That is the biggest voting bloc there is, and right now, they are under the spell of Trumpism.

Promise them free shit.  Promise you'll hurt their enemies.  Send them free tit pics by text.  Whatever it takes.  Oh, and run a charismatic candidate that is willing to say all of those magic words at a middle-school vocab level, and/or use some Hollywood catch phrases.  I'm dead serious, the most serious threats to Trump and Trumpism are people like The Rock, and McConaughey, and folks like that.

I don't agree with everything you wrote but you're spot on with a more successful tactic. Appeal to people's emotions and then give them 1 or 2 simple talking points. The GOP has become very disciplined on their messaging. They hammer it home so even a casual viewer of news is aware of it.

Let's say Dems want to raise taxes on billionaires. The tactic should be to repeat over and over that billionaires cheat on their taxes and the IRS is understaffed to enforce laws enacted by both sides. Say Bezos spent more on his wedding than he's ever paid in taxes for his entire life. Is Bezos going to produce his tax returns to refute that statement?

All it would take is someone calling this theoretical candidate a "socialist" and no one would give a shit about their sports or pop culture takes. You're right that no one cares about policy, but still, everything has become political.  We are in a culture and morality war that is rooted in a binary political choice. It sucks.

I think we are past the point of this theory working.

IMO things will just have to get so bad in this country that it's undeniable that Trumpism was a massive failure. To the point that people have no choice but to vote for the opposition party. You can't win the mouth breather vote until they feel a lot more pain. If we get to that point, better to have a candidate and administration that can legitimately govern instead of just re-arranging the deck chairs.

The last part is why I feel we are more rooted in fascist Italy than Nazi Germany. We just have an actual military and industrial base that Italy never had.

Truly believe we have to stop trying to appease Trump voters and "centrists". As I've said way too many times, that game is rigged.

90 million Americans didn't vote in the 2024 election. Focus on them, instead of trying to change the minds of a much smaller group of perceived gettable votes.. That is how you win IMO.
