The Gun Owner’s thread

Alright guys, I’m tired of being a cretin and need some suppressor help.  Found and purchased a Ruger ranch 300BO for the kiddo. Need a can for it.  I’ve been reading and reading but hard to find anything that isn’t a sales pitch.  Determined I’d like something lighter if possible, and found a titanium Q. Also found a surefire that looks intriguing.   This is going on a bolt gun that will never be shot more than a few rounds at a time while getting her trained up, then maybe a box a season after that.  Most important to me is noise reduction, quality, and probably weight.  Budget less important but not going to spend $3500 on the KA I looked at, my god. Is there anything that hits those marks for $1500-ish?

What the fuck is wrong with you?

I’ve got my own toys, and they mostly involve breaking clays. This one is for the kiddos.  They may shoot 10 boxes thru, my point was it won’t need to hold up to any rapid fire exercises.

Looking at the Banish 30 too. This looks simple.  I’m trying to dig more into their product because the help they provide with the process/paperwork is very appealing.

Yeah for tone and quiet you can also look at the Dead Air Nomad 30 or Nomad L or LT. the LT is the lighter model.

The nomad line comes direct thread and is pretty impressive.

I have the Sandman line which is dead airs “tank” line, little less suppression than the nomads but they are nearly indestructible

If you are going to get a can for 300blk you need to get one that is suitable for an AR for killing pigs at least. Plan for the stuff your kids will want to shoot in the future, not the stuff you'll want them to shoot.

The ARs collect dust over here. My brother built each of my girls one when they were born, but the oldest (only one big enough to shoot them) doesn’t like the percussive blast and it makes her close her eyes. I don’t know or care to know enough about them to jack with the gas block etc. I guess I could get her uncle to fix her up, but I’m fine with her learning on bolt actions.  It’s all she’s going to inherit anyways.

My point was more to say, I don’t need something that will be full auto. My understanding is I’ll end up with one for each rifle anyways.  Just want to know what brands in the 1-1500 range are quality, and which ones are the most effective at sound reduction.

Yeah, even when I eventually put one on my AR it will be mainly for hunting, so no need for a super heavy duty one. But it is probably a good idea to have one that will quick detach from flash suppressors to easily switch between rifles. Probably something that can handle .308 or .30-06 as well.

Right now looks like it’s between the dead air Nomad and the Q trash panda. Both are within a few hundred bucks of each other. My brother is real big into this type of stuff and he raves about the Sandman.  Sorry for all the questions, this is all foreign to me.  The nomad is apparently good up to a 300 Norma, but none of my big boys have threaded barrels.  Right now I’m focusing on the BO I bought the kiddo so she can take a step up and maybe take a hog or a doe next year. She’s a helluva shot with the target .22 she’s been on for the last few years.

Truthfully, most of them seem to be within a couple of decibels of each other. You won’t really notice it by the ear.

For the time being, I think I’m flush on rifles and handguns.

Looking at getting some (maybe 1-3 for me and the boys) 12ga O/U. Will be mostly used for shooting skeet with the possibility of future dove/quail/pheasant hunting. Really don’t know much about different wood grains/quality but would like for this to be an heirloom piece so nice wood and a receiver with some nice scroll work would be nice. But, I’ll end up engraving something on it too when I give it to the boys. Price range is 2-4k. Was intrigued by the Benelli 828U. Any pros/cons? Any alternatives you guys would recommend?

I think my dad's is a 336 C model, I'd guess that it was acquired around '75.   no idea what the "C" means.

Look back a few months in this thread for a discussion for $3k O/Us. IMO can’t go wrong with a Beretta or Browning

As for cans . I have the Texas Silencer Co. Titanium Outlander. 5/8x24 and includes an adapter to size down to the 1/2x28. Were around $900 (not including stamp or trust) from Solincer Shop. $2k out the door for both cans. Really light and work great for me. But lots of good ones out there. I went thru Silencer Shop via electronic kiosk. If you have questions run by 1 of their stores and theyll hook u up.
I recently picked up a Benelli 828U Nickel 12ga, Ruger Ranch Predator in 300 B0 & am waiting on a Benelli Lupo in .243

I have traded off a handful of handguns that I had no use for or were plain unreliable, but in turn acquired a new Ruger Super Blackhawk, a new Colt Government .380, and a Colt SAA NIB that had sat in my brother’s safe unfired by him since he bought it new in 1980.

I have gifted about 20 nice handguns & rifles to my kids, grandkids, & brother over the years. Some new, some used.

Only sold two handguns over the past 55 years to acquaintances - a POS Rohm .22 revolver to a fellow college buddy, and a Llama .380. I do not regret getting rid of those.

Exactly, my dad always said never sell a gun, just trade it for something you like or will use more.  He also ended up selling most of the guns from his and my grandfather’s collections

Looking at getting a Henry.22 for my son’s birthday and first gun, any recommendations?

Get the Golden Boy.  It's my son's favorite gun and my daughter is getting involved and she loves it as well.  Solid gun that will last generations.  I often take it with me for walks, etc as well.

Great, great option.  Friend has one, it's more accurate than either of us.  I'd also take a look as Dan Wesson as well.  I have the SIG 1911, and I love it.  You'll never find a better trigger than a 1911!

I have a GI surplus 1911 .45 ACP with a .22 LR Cenier conversion kit. It's my favorite handgun with either setup. Being an old parkerized beater I don't have to baby it any. It's very accurate, not like an accurized .45, of course, but plenty good for anything I'm apt to use it for.

I’m trying to make a decision right now and considering a Dan Wesson as one of the options. I have a RIA and a Colt Government 1911. I feel like I have a gap in the collection without having a higher end 1911 like a Dan Wesson. A Valor looks great but not the easiest to find. But when you look for a listing of a Valor, you realize they look really good but So does the Pointman and the Specialist. Tempting.

Once I climbed to that price point ($1500-2000) I start looking at CZ 75 TSO which may be too close to my CZ shadow 2 to justify the addition. and I’m within arms reach of a Wilson Combat EDC X9L. Though not a 1911, it is close enough for me to want it.

Now my head is spinning. Thanks a lot.

I’ll probably just end up buying another Glock.

Find a Valor. Then, when you do, you'll have to have a V-Bob.

I have (and have had) a lot of pistols. If I had to make a shot to save my life, easy choice, I'd pick up my Valor.

If you're actually going after the upland birds, go with 20 gauge...no reason to carry the extra pound and a half all day in the field, and the right load in a 20 will stone a pheasant that's far downwind. They also swing better than a 12 at the towers. I rarely use my 12 gauges, because the 20's are very capable guns. Now that I live in Washington and drive past fields of geese and ditches full of ducks, the 12's will see some action. All of my smooth bores are Berettas, some  bought new 45 years ago...they are fine pieces, and I have never had any problems with them. You can go way upscale with them and get the pretty engraving, but i'm more of a 'slither under the barbwire with the breech cracked' kind of guy.

When I was younger and more stupidly macho, I refused to think that a 20 was as capable as as 12. ("BUT IT'S NOT AS BIG! I NEED MOAR! MACHO!")

But the reasoning here is correct. A 12 gauge gun is going to be heavier to carry in the field and for the distances one would normally shoot "skeet" and upland birds, there is no real difference in the pattern with smaller birdshot. There isn't enough time for the pattern to open up for the extra 1/4oz of payload to make any difference.

For reasons I don't need to go into here, many registered skeet shooters shoot 20 gauge in the 12 gauge event and it doesn't hurt them.

On Texas gun trader right now there is a guy in Fort Hood selling one of each. Both appear to be in good shape. I inquired about the Valor and he told me he was the second owner. I suspect he’s the second owner of both.

100%

Switched my "bird gun" to my dad's older Browning B80 20g.  It's light and easy to maneuver and has killed more dove/quail than old man winter.

Also, don't miss the forest for the trees.  If you really like the Springfield, it's a GREAT option.  All these high end 1911 options outshoot 99% of their owners (raises hand)

My LEO friend with the Springfield likes it, but never carries it on duty.  It's too heavy, has a limited mag capacity, and he doesn't want to beat the hell out of it on a daily basis.  So last I talked with him, he carried a polymer framed 9mm M&P loaded with 147gr Speer Gold Dot rounds.

I am not the one looking at the Springfield that was moose. And I agree, Springfield is a great gun. If I didn’t buy a Colt when I did, I would have bought the a Springfield government style.

I did make up to Gun Warehouse. They have a Valor that I really want. I have to wait to lose a gunbroker bid on another pistol and I’ll be back for it. Either way I’ll be back with pictures of something today or in two weeks.

I'm a 1911 fan and carry one frequently.  You will not go wrong with SA Operator.  Well built gun for its price range.  A step up is Dan Wesson.  The Valor is my favorite, though I sometimes carry an ECO that shoots very tiny groups.  Next up is Baer, Brown, GI, Nighthawk, Wilson class of semi-customs.

My daily carry is a Novak Custom LW Commander.  Actually had a pair made, one 9mm and one .45 ACP.  No grip safety, Ambi thumb safety, Kart barrel, NM bushing, Greider trigger set at 3 lbs.  They shoot incredibly well and are easy to carry.  120 grain Lehigh Defenders in .45 and 65 grain Lehigh Defenders in 9mm.  So much lighter than lead and can really tell the difference in weight.  The .45 zips along at 1400 fps and the little 9 runs 1700 fps out of my gun.  Whitetail deer sure act like it hurts when they get hit with one.  Then they fall over.

So... flesh that out more. What does a bigger payload (i.e. a bigger shell) necessarily accomplish that couldn't be done in some other way, either through shot size or pattern density (i.e. choke)?

While I agree with where you’re going, I gear up solidly for WW. Tough fuckers.
