Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

Per someone writing the checks we are upping the bid on Atkinson and several others. He’s not gonna end up here but others will have to pay. We are managing things on a high level and even in recruitments we aren’t likely to win we are a big fucking problem for everyone else out there. It’s a fantastic time to be a Texas fan. I’m enjoying it immensely. Once it officially became a game of money and intelligence we rose to the top in a hurry. Fun times.

I was surrounded by about 80 rabid LSU fans with 20 or so fans from other SEC schools. They hate us so much. At a round table during a golf tourney weather delay an old dog orthopedic surgeon LSU fan gave me the dig that it took being able to pay players openly for Texas to be good again. I just said, “Yea we are all real excited and loving this new era. It’s been really fun.” The scowl he gave was better than a birdie putt. Welcome to the fucking show you fucking dildo.

Opposing fans generally say that and think it's a dig. They don't like it when you just smile and talk about how nice it is now that college recruiting isn't a competition to see who's the least law abiding program.

$9.95ers are saying Clemson is making a strong late push with Quinn.  Could just be $9.95ing, who knows.

They're idiots if they don't at least test where the sell price is.

Wasn’t too excited about the KJ Edwards news, but if the reality is we’re prioritizing our funds more similar to an NFL salary cap, I’m all for it. I won’t say that our running game last year was perfect, but we were plenty effective at times with our running game with a 3 star in his second year and made the semis. No knock on Quintrevion, as he was a good evaluation and he looks like an NFL player. It makes sense to prioritize elite QB, oline, one or two play making WRs/TEs, pass rushers and run stoppers.

What is the number at edge this cycle? 2-3?

Feels like Carlton will be one but you have to squint and do some wishcasting to see an obvious 2nd or 3rd guy right now, especially if you consider Griffin a LB/edge hybrid.

Damn what a sick burn. He really got you. Hope you’re doing ok.

Should’ve asked him about their baseball team.

Thursday AM recruiting notes

Thursday morning recruiting notes with things moving by the hour, if not minutes.

Dre Quinn, EDGE (Buford, Ga./High) - Clemson is telling Quinn and circle that they see him as an impact player in year one. Texas told Quinn and circle they see him developing for a year, then becoming an impact player. That has made Clemson much more attractive to the circle. He will announce his decision today.

Vodney Cleveland, DL (Birmingham, Ala./Parker) - Texas remains the favorite as of Wednesday over Florida, North Carolina and Georgia with a Saturday decision closing in.

5-star Trenton Henderson, EDGE (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic) - Make no mistake, Texas has Henderson as high on the board as any in the 2026 cycle.

5-stars Tyler Atkinson, LB (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) and Xavier Griffin, LB (Gainesville, Ga./High) - OTF would be pretty surprised if they attend the same college. Atkinson visiting Texas helps Bama's fight against the Horns for Griffin.

Luke Wafle, EDGE (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School) - Texas has stayed in the fight, but as we reported yesterday we weren't believing making the OV was a lock. USC made a big run last weekend, but that quieted down. Ohio State is trying their best to shut this down prior to the Texas OV. One person in the family still wants him to visit Texas.

James Johnson, DL (Miami/Northwestern via North Fort Myers) - While many expect Miami here, one source told OTF Wednesday that Georgia and Texas are the top two headed into the Longhorns OV.

Kaydon Finley, WR (Aledo, Texas/High) - OTF believes Texas remains in a good spot over Notre dame headed into the OV this weekend.

Kendall Guervil, DL (Fort Myers, Fla./High) - OTF believes Texas remains in the best position headed into the OV this weekend.

Ezavier Crowell, RB (Jackson, Ala./High) - Those in Austin believe Texas is truly in the fight with Alabama ahead of the Bama OV and June 26 decision. Auburn and Georgia haven't backed off.

Damari Simeon, DL (Richland, N.J./St. Augustine) - Texas is doing well in this recruitment headed into Ohio State OV. Michigan still battling. Penn State would be a bit of surprise.

Samari Matthews, CB (Cornelius, N.C./Hough) - Texas remains confident ahead of South Carolina OV this weekend. Miami swinging. August decision remains scheduled.

Malakai Lee, OT (Honolulu, Hi./Kamehameha) - Confidence in this one remains in Austin ahead of Michigan OV this weekend. Georgia picked up a fourth OL commit Wednesday, a left tackle prospect. Lee announces his decision June 27.

Sucks to lose players to early playing time promises but it happens.  One price of stocking talent. Elite 11 Finals 2025: Ranking the quarterbacks after two days of competition

Wednesday's action saw the 20 finalists go through the Vicis Pro Day and the Panini Accuracy Challenge. We stack and rack the signal callers heading into the final day of competition with Houston commit Keisean Henderson leading the way.

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The 26th edition of the Elite 11 Finals continues to roar on as 20 soon-to-be senior high school quarterbacks completed the second day of action Wednesday night at scenic Mira Costa High.

Each of the 20 quarterbacks went through the Vicis Pro Day and the Panini Accuracy Challenge. The pro day script called for 20 throws to moving targets in an 8-minute window, while the accuracy challenge asked the quarterbacks to hit a variety of different stationary targets scattered to different levels.

Below is our culminate ranking of the quarterbacks after factoring in two days of competition.

ALPHA DOG: KEISEAN HENDERSON (HOUSTON COMMIT)

Keisean Henderson put together the best individual performance of the first two days on Day 1 and had some of the highest peaks of any prospect during Wednesday's pro day and accuracy challenge.

The five-star from The Bayou City is known for his dynamic athleticism, but has proven beyond doubt that he can throw with pace and touch across the entire spray chart. While Henderson had a few misfires on the night, his overall body of work from the two nights is in our eyes the strongest of the group.

With that being said, entering the final night of competition it is truly anyone's game as we believe close to a half dozen quarterbacks are in serious contention to earn MVP honors.

Pro Day Best Ball: Throw of the night. Show-stopping dime on the move to the front right pylon from nearly 45 yards out. Thrown with more pace than any other contestant, this high degree of difficulty pass squarely to the chin of the receiver.

NEXT TEN

2. Dia Bell (Texas commit): Over the two days there hasn't been a quarterback with a smoother and more consistent delivery than the Texas commit. The five-star is a metronomic passer who can dial up the RPMs when necessary and throw with touch to the second and third levels of the defense. Bell's pro day workout had some noticeable misses, but the flashes were bright, and he made high-degree-of-difficulty throws look easy in the accuracy challenge.

Pro Day Best Ball: One of the best individual throws from pro day workouts. Elite 11 staffer simulates a free rusher, Bell climbs the pocket before launching an off-balance dot to a receiver on a deep post.

3. Travis Burgess (North Carolina commit): Heading into the final day of 7-on-7 action there isn't a bigger stock-up candidate than Burgess. Currently slotted as the No. 27 quarterback in the country, Burgess has aced every test thrown his way and no setting proved that more than Wednesday's pro day. Burgess displayed mastery of the 20-throw script, finishing in a tie for second per the scores from both the Elite 11 staff and 247Sports. The tools lead the conversation with Burgess at 6-foot-5 with above-the-rim athleticism, but it's clear he has significantly raised his floor this offseason.

Pro Day Best Ball: Double verts redzone concept where he read a staffer simulating a safety and fired a bullet to the outside to the receiver's facemask.

4. Faizon Brandon (Tennessee commit): The No. 1 player in the 2026 cycle finished day one on a high note by winning the Stack Athlete Rail Shot Challenge, and put together another strong performance on Wednesday. Brandon is one of the strongest competitors in the field at attacking the second level of the defense, and he heated up during both his pro day and accuracy challenge when targeting the middle of the field. The expectations were high entering this week given Brandon's status as top dog in the 2026 cycle, and the North Carolina native enters Thursday with a chance to still take home MVP honors.

Pro Day Best Ball: Play-action with a free rusher, escaped out of the pocket to the right and delivered a strike on the chin to a receiver working a deep over route.

5. Landon Duckworth: The flashes of brilliance from the No. 6 quarterback in the country have been incredibly bright over the past two days. Duckworth's elastic throwing motion paired with his physical tools give him one of the highest developmental ceilings in the cycle. A six-throw sequence derailed his pro day score, but Duckworth responded well during the back half of his workout as he moved closer to the red zone. South Carolina is trending in the recruitment

Pro Day Best Ball: In-rhythm seven-step drop with a hitch before firing a high velocity dart on a fifteen-yard dig.

6. Bowe Bentley: The name of the game with the Top247 gunslinger from the Lone Star State is his ability to throw with pace and placement on the move. Bentley built off of a solid day one showing, finishing in a tie for first in the pro day per 247Sports and tied for third per the Elite 11 staff. The four-star down to Oklahoma and LSU also put together a solid showing in the accuracy challenge finishing in eighth.

Pro Day Best Ball: High degree of difficulty throw for right-handers. Reactionary escape outside of the pocket to the left where he had to square his shoulders on the move before hitting a right-to-left twelve-yard crosser in stride to the upfield shoulder.

7. Terry Walker III (Duke commit): If Burgess is the biggest stock-up candidate through two days, the other side of Tobacco Road might feature the competitor pushing him for that spot. Walker finished tied for 5th in the pro day per 247Sports and 7th per the Elite 11 staff. The future Blue Devil made some of the higher degree of difficulty passes to the third level on the pro day script look effortless.

Pro Day Best Ball: One of two prospects graded with a perfect throw for us on this attempt. Play-action fake with movement outside the pocket to the left, launched a frozen rope off-platform over forty air yards to the back left pylon directly on target.

8. Jett Thomalla (Alabama commit): Thomalla got off to a sluggish start Tuesday after he spent the weekend weighing a flip from Iowa State. However, the switch was flipped midway through the opening workout and Thomalla carried that momentum into Wednesday as he tied for first per 247Sports in the pro day and in a tie for third per the Elite 11 staff. The MaxPreps Nebraska Player of the Year looked in complete command attacking all three levels of the field and put together better-than-expected results when tasked with throwing on the move.

Pro Day Best Ball: Sprint out right, ball thrown with anticipation and layered pace to a receiver running a corner route who was able to turn upfield along the sideline after the catch.

9. Oscar Rios: After proving he could find success working in a structured setting in a mock pocket on Day 1, Rios looked extremely comfortable on the move Wednesday. An escape artist on Fridays, the Top247 signal-caller utilized his nimble footwork and natural off-platform playmaking to stay on time and complete challenging throws during the pro day script. Wednesday represented another solid outing for the four-star set to decide between UCLA and Arizona.

Pro Day Best Ball: Anticipatory red zone fade thrown to the receiver's eyes in between the pylons along the sideline.

10: Bryson Beaver: One of the hottest commodities on the quarterback market, the California native approached Wednesday's pro day with a true flamethrower mentality and came away with some of the more impressive individual moments on the night. There seems to be no shortage of confidence with Beaver, and with good reason considering the former Boise State commit made some of the tougher throws from the script look effortless. Beaver is set to visit Oregon this upcoming weekend.

Pro Day Best Ball: One of the best individual throws from pro day workouts. Escape outside the pocket to the right, leading into an on-the-move third-level dime to the front right pylon.

11. Matt Ponatoski: The Ohio native was on the bubble after Tuesday's workout and earned a spot in our eleven thanks to one of the top pro day scores on Wednesday, finishing first per the Elite 11 staff and fifth per 247Sports. The dual-sport standout owns one of the liveliest arms in attendance, which is backed up by a 97 MPH fastball, but has showcased notable speed-changing nuance over the past two days that has added much-needed depth to the evaluation. Kentucky is a school to watch.

Pro Day Best Ball: High degree of difficulty. Escape outside the pocket to the right, leading into an on-the-move third-level shot to the front right pylon. Thrown with plenty of zip right at the receiver's forehead.

MORE TAKEAWAYS

"He might not have made our ranking, but tip of the cap to Texas A&M commit Helaman Casuga. After making a deep run in the Stack Athelte Rail Shot Challenge on Tuesday, he scored in the upper half Wednesday in both the pro day and accuracy challenge. Casuga gets the ball out quickly and excels at peppering the first and second levels. He had his junior season cut short by injury, but did shine in an upset of nationally-ranked IMG Academy. The Aggies continue to stockpile talent at wide receiver and Casuga presents a unique option for Mike Elko & Co. as his game is built to attack the numbers and set the table for playmakers." – 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins

"There haven't been too many quarterbacks anywhere in the country who have made a bigger jump over the last year than Bryson Beaver. He had a big junior season and his momentum has really carried over to the off-season. He just missed the cut for us when we named our top 11 on Tuesday and he had some big throws during his pro day Wednesday. Beaver told us he put on 25 pounds over the last year and not only does he look noticeably bigger in his upper body, he's throwing with a lot more heat and zip on his passes. He always was advanced mechanically and in his ability to throw with anticipation and you can tell his confidence is sky high right now. His stock is rising fast among college recruiters and he's trending up in our eyes as well."  – 247Sports National Scouting Analyst Greg Biggins

"Clemson commit Tait Reynolds is a finalist we haven't discussed much since arriving in Los Angeles, but he too deserves a mention after an encouraging pro day and accuracy challenge. A true-dual threat with over 2,000 career rushing yards to his credit, Reynolds is making the case that he can also get it done with his arm. Reynolds was one of the few participants Wednesday that was able to rip through various targets and create noise that echoed across the field. He must keep progressing as a passer and decision-maker, but he absolutely has a chance to factor into plans for the Tigers once Cade Klubnik is done in Death Valley. " – Ivins

"For the second year in a row at this event, a North Carolina commit made a huge impression on me. Last year, it was Bryce Baker, who rode a strong showing into a spot in the Top247. This year, it's Travis Burgess and you can expect a similar ascension. There is so much to like about him from a frame and arm standpoint. He's a plus athlete with quick feet and easy arm action. His good throws during the pro day were probably better than anyone else and he's a complete sponge from a learning and coach-ability standpoint as well. His stock is rising fast and we love his long term upside." –Biggins

"Louisville quarterback commit Briggs Cherry won the Panini Accuracy Challenge with a score of 63, which isn't surprising as he's viewed behind the scenes as one of the better full-field passers in the class. Cherry likes to set up shop with a firm base and then fire with conviction. The heavy feet aren't ideal, but he's the type of signal caller that Jeff Brohm has gotten the most out of over the years." – Ivins

"Terry Walker III had two strong workouts and watching him in action, it's difficult to reconcile the in-person showing with the on-field production. A passing metric that has shown to be a strong indicator of future college success is completion percentage and Walker has a career completion percentage of just 47%. The guy we've seen for two days has made every throw in the route tree and made it look easy. He has what you call –  'easy velocity' – where he doesn't need much of a wind up at all to get the ball down the field. He's a smooth mover and strong mechanically. Really all the tools are there and Walker can have the senior year we expect him to have, look for him to rise up our quarterback board." – Biggins

I seriously doubt that they said “Hey Texas is offering you $200,000 but we will let you start immediately”. That’s total wish casting. Equal money via promises (who knows if they can actually fulfill those promises) plus the sales pitch is the name of the game.

So basically, all things being equal where would you rather play. Not us, what would it take for you to come here? $300K - Let me go talk to my manager. He says he can’t go higher than $250K, but we can throw in some nice dish towels. What do you say? You coming here?

This is TexAgs-level moral victory rationalizing. It's up there with "we didn't land the kid, but at least him going to [insert big program here] proves our coaches can evaluate" from the Strong days. And I guess it's going to be repeated ad nauseum once we lose Perry-Wright and Turntine the same way we lost Edwards.

And I don't know why we're even talking about Wafle. USC and Ohio State are offering him two-year, $2.5 million NIL deals and he's going to one of those schools. But I guess they had to get in a bidding war so it's actually fantastic for us, or something.

If he's not coming to Texas, it IS fantastic for us to have those two to get into a bidding war. Not sure why that is beyond your grasp.

Would you prefer we simply allowed our opponents to pay less money to get players and therefore have more powder to fuck with us somewhere that's actually important...which sure as shit isn't fucking Edge. I'm all for making aTm pay insane moneys for a RB too. Weirdly, we seemed to show up just fine with the money to pay a fuck ton of transfer and recruit DL last cycle. Do you think the fact the position and our roster situation might play into things just a bit?

Satya is right that it's aggie level logic to say we don't have a shot but at least we can make others spend more. It's not even about us spending the money that I'm talking about.

“We don’t have a shot” is not what’s happening, though. And isn’t the same as “we won’t sign him.”

and having a consistent recruiting foe spend more of their allocation on a player does have value for us.  For some recruitments, it’s absolutely worth the effort. And hey, maybe we land the player.

Who said we don't have a shot? You know there's a difference between Choosing Not To Match or Choosing Not To Promise Playing Time and "we have no shot, right?"

I'd more point out that Blackcat, and the donor in question, we're overwhelmingly positive about the situation and how we're handling things, and yet Satya found a way to be negative and fling his period blood all over the board, and you for some reason felt the need to lap it up like a thirsty kitten. This is a real great showing for you, I'm sure everyone is really surprised by this turn of events.

They can be positive because driving up the cost on a programs that don't care about cost and have even ramped up their spending from the settlement is a really stupid thing to be excited about.

All the tOSU picks for Luke Wafle yesterday have been changed to USC this morning.

Steve Wiltfong: Moving the prediction to USC for prized edge rusher Luke Wafle

Quote

Hun School (NJ) On300 edge rusher Luke Wafle is set to announce his college decision on Thursday at 2 pm. It can be viewed on the On3 Recruits YouTube Channel. This has been a back-and-forth bidding war between USC and Ohio State. I liked the Trojans coming out of the official visit over the weekend. I then picked the Buckeyes to win this recruitment by Wednesday morning. Now, the Trojans battled back early Wednesday evening.

Now I’m predicting USC wins this recruitment in the end. Both programs over the last 48 hours upped their NIL packages and as reported yesterday sources are indicating Wafle is tracking to be the next prospect to have a deal of at least a million dollars per year. We’re hearing now a two-year deal worth between 2.2 and 2.6 million dollars is the range.

A spring visit to Ohio State and then a summer official visit checked a lot of boxes for Wafle from a development and culture standpoint. Whatever the NIL promise was, USC trumped it this past weekend. That along with potentially playing for Eric Henderson and Shaun Nua also made for an exciting opportunity. Ohio State then trumped that NIL offer. Now USC is in control again for what has become a bidding war for one of America’s best.

Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will keep in touch throughout the day so we’ll see what happens. The On3 Industry tabs Wafle as the nation’s No. 10 edge and No. 52 prospect overall. On3 slots him at No. 4 edge and No. 14 nationally. USC currently has the nation’s No. 1 class and even canceled a visit of another prospect this weekend after Wafle was trending their way. Ohio State has the No. 4 class.

There might not be a prospect higher on the board this entire cycle for the Buckeyes than Wafle. Florida, Penn State and Texas round out the top five for Wafle.

They can be positive because driving up the cost on a programs that don't care about cost and have even ramped up their spending from the settlement is a really stupid thing to be excited about.

Your notion that these other places don’t care about cost is fantasy.

Looking at spending this year, doesn't seem like it. Sounds just like the basketball talk recently where Texas thought 5-6 million would be enough but other teams exploding the market.
