Texas Basketball Recruiting Notes: A Clean Shave

Travis Branham thinks Toppin most likely to end up at Texas currently

Quote

What we are hearing: A four-star prospect coming out of high school in Dallas, JT Toppin put college basketball on notice with a dynamite freshman season at New Mexico. The bouncy 6-foot-8 forward averaged 12.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per outing while shooting over 62% from the field.

After emerging as one of the top rim-running four men in the country, Toppin's entrance into the transfer portal came as a surprise to nobody. From the start, it was thought that he would end up back in his home state with a program like Texas and Texas Tech

However, Toppin also entered the NBA Draft and is fully committed to seeing that process through. Currently, Toppin is at the combine in Chicago where he's playing in front of and meeting with NBA teams to get feedback on what his draft status would be.

Ultimately, we expect that Toppin will be urged to make a return to school to beef up his all-around game and improve is stock for next year. Should that happen, we are currently seeing Rodney Terry and the Longhorns as the team to beat.

Yikes we’re thin up front and gonna add some bench warmer portal transfer. Who is left in the portal that will actually make a difference?

Dan Hurley?

The new Jay Wright.  Who was the new Billy Donovan.

You may be right - I was just thinking of someone other than our current coach.

I don’t believe there is anyone of major substance for the upcoming season. Texas will be playing a ton of small ball.

The only power 4 caliber PF/C options still in the portal are Trevon Brazile and Coleman Hawkins, both 6'10 PFs. Coleman is a scorer and Brazile hasn't been fully healthy in awhile.

Hawkins is likely to Arkansas, but idk anything about Coleman's portal recruitment.

Too bad we didn't get in on Ven-Allen Lubin who committed to UNC today

Other posters are right. We are not serious about basketball

I read that Hawkins has been lighting it up at the combine and is likely to stay in the draft.  He said it would take first round money to stay in school, and he added that he was tired of school.

I am extremely confused here.  The first sentence makes it seem like Coleman Hawkins is one dude.  The 3rd sentence turns him into 2 people?

Gerry said yesterday that the most likely outcome is poaching a grad transfer by getting them into the portal but options will probably be slim if we're being realistic

Someone should remind Gerry that the rules were changed. Grad transfers had to be in the portal by the closing of the Spring window just like everyone else starting this year.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/40022677/all-college-basketball-transfers-portal-1

Unless there is some loophole I am unaware of our options are limited to those players already in the portal and the pickings are slim to say the least.

The solution is obviously to find a great player on a mid-major that has not transferred yet and poach his coach to be an assistant and then the portal opens for players on that team.

Hadn’t been in this thread for awhile. I was focused on the depressing baseball coaching situation. Nice to come back here and see that for the second year in a row roster management is suboptimal. Sigh.

I wanted Toppin but I’ll settle for a couple of large bodies who are active on the boards and can keep opponents honest in the paint. If we don’t get at least one 6’9” ish guy who can do some lunchpail work we are going to get roughed up in close games where timely rebounding, altering an interior shot, and/or a couple putback buckets will be the deciding factor

We don’t really need a big who leads the team in scoring (though it could make us a solid second weekend tourney candidate) but we damn well need one who is not 180 lbs and in love with the 3 point line

I have no idea if any of these guys are options, but here are the remaining in the portal who are power forwards or centers and top-500 according to 24-7.  That's it.  That is the whole list.

Power Forwards:

  • Coleman Hawkins, Illinois - 6'10, 230 - #24 - 12.7 PTS, 6.7 TRB
  • Trevon Brazile, Arkansas - 6'10, 220 - #41 - 8.6 PTS, 5.9 TRB
  • DJ Burns, Youngstown St - 6'7, 220 - #154 - 13.1 PTS, 11.0 TRB - 2nd team Horizon, All Defense
  • Matt Bewley, Chicago St - 6'9, 225 - #189 - Currently ineligible
  • Mowot Mag, Rutgers - 6'7, 215 - #207 - 9.1 PTS, 3.8 TRB
  • Ryan Bewley, Chicago St - 6'9, 210 - #240 - Currently ineligible

Centers:

  • Baba Miller, Florida St - 6'11, 204 - #131 - 7.9 PTS, 4.9 TRB
  • Ugonna Onyenso, Kentucku - 7'0, 233 - #180 - 3.6 PTS, 4.8 TRB
  • Max Allen, Marist - 6'9, 255 - #338 - 11.4 PTS, 3.8 TRB - 2nd Team MAAC
  • Duncan Powell, Sac St - 6'8, 220 - #411 - 12.1 PTS, 7.0 TRB - Went to Desoto High School
  • Emmanuel Okorafor, Louisville - 6'9, 220 - #444 - 2.4 PTS, 2.2 TRB
  • Enoch Boakye, Fresno St - 6'11, 250 - #471 - 7.5 PTS, 7.7 TRB

Pretty slim pickings.  At this point some of the dudes above aren't much better than Onyema.  What a shit show.

I would try to get DJ Burns since he is a grown assed man at this point and could be plug and play at Power Forward. Then maybe Duncan Powell since he has some state of Texas connections.  But man, this isn't good.

You know that’s not the DJ burns that lit it up during the tourney, right?

Hawkins isn’t my first choice. He’s not an inside presence on either end of the court..:might as well be 6’5” as he likes to hog the ball and shoot long threes.

I’d be happy at this point with he Sac St and Youngstown guys as they look to be physical

Lincoln is just like Westwood. It’s going to be like “coming home”.

It has to be $$, because what the hell?

Well, Fred Hoiberg is a much better coach than RT.  And who knows how much we even pursued him.

Fred Hoiberg has made one sweet 16 in his career. He’s been at Nebraska for 5 years, this year was his first making the tourney, and he got stomped in the first round by a mediocre aggy team.

We don't have to pretend Berke was in that much of demand, but Hoiberg does still have the credibility of being an NBA HC and Nebraska was a fine team last year. I'm sure he'll get much more playing time there than he did at UCLA. Apparently the other finalist was BYU which should tell you he wasn't exactly swimming in top 25 teams to transfer to.

I saw the headline on espn about Hurley being offered by the Lakers but figured it was bs. However, it appears to be real and a bunch of players in CN may be about to have a free transfer opportunity.
