When did they change to the black and white ball?  Is it like the black and white cookie in Seinfeld and meant to bring Clark and Reese fans together in harmony?

im only gonna post this if everyone here promises to remember that angel reese is just as important to the wnba as cc:

I came into work today and the first highlights I see were from this game. I mean sweet Baby Jesus those shots were just ridiculous.

By the way this was Clark's 9th 30/5/5 game of her career. It took her 45 games to do this. The WNBA all-time leader is Taurasi. In 565 games SHE HAD TEN. Someone please tell me again why anyone should listen to anything these former players say when their records are being obliterated by a player they thought was not going to transition into being a star immediately?

“she’s got the wrong skill set for the physicality of this league; she’s just not built for the physicality of this league.”

portnoy might be right, this might be the worst take ever. aside from the fact that the league just isn’t very physical, CC has the absolute perfect skill set to deal with “the physicality” of this league because she can just run right past and dribble right around all of these more “physical” (see: slow and unathletic) players, and if she doesn’t feel like doing that she can just pull up from 27 feet and drain it at will. she’s such a great athlete compared to the majority of the league, they cannot stay in front of her, and she’s too quick to have her shot blocked, or usually even really contested.

the idea that she wasn’t going to step into that league and dominate was always stupid, but geno took it way beyond anything reasonable and just embarrassed himself. “physicality of the league”. yeah, maybe when ymir’s resident thugs like liz cambadge, chennedy carter, or angel reese attack caitlin clark because she’s better than them.

Not sure what Clark did to get a tech here (Suns players got 3 but the one that cheap-shotted Clark to the ground got to stay in the game).

Look - I love me some CC but that's some clickbait bullshit. Yes, Clark got a T. The Sun got 2 Ts and a flagrant 1.

Screenshot_20250617_193954_ESPN.thumb.jpg.456d0785d4ea392be857a1db9cc87bb0.jpg

Also - something I couldn't help but just wonder - who is the most popular female athlete of all time and when does CC eclipse her? Is it Serena? That's the only non-Olympian I can think of who was a megastar like this. I don't think any of our soccer players were huge household stars like this.

Shit - it may already be CC.

I think it was Mia Hamm until Serena overtook her.

Yeah maybe. I just feel like Olympians get really popular then no one cares about them for 4 years.

unreal how cunty this pro league is. they are looking for any excuse to attack the best player because she is better than them.

the last chick with teh body check should be suspended for a few games but doubt that happens

Whole buncha people did not like Serena on account of how she treated people and the way she made everything about her. Sharapova was more well liked than she was despite being less successful. Mia Hamm's a good one. Some of those vball girls were v popular- strugg, moceanu, Shannon Miller.

Very good point,  unless you go out of your way to attract attention, most athletes in Olympic sports fly under the radar for three years, even if they are dominating their sports and winning world titles.

The perfect example is Sydney McLaughlin - Levrone.  Hands done the most dominant US women's athlete going and she is an afterthought if you asked most of America to name the top female athlete.

Consider she is the FIRST ATHLETE (male or female) to set 4 world records in the same event (did it over 13 months) and wins by some insane margins.

She is the most dominant US hurdler since Edwin Moses and if she wins a third gold medal in LA she will join a group that includes the likes of Faith Kipyegon (1500M),  some guy named Ryan Crouser,  another guy named Carl Lewis (long jump, and Usain Bolt (100m and 200m).

To have the opportunity to join that company is so rare and yet does ESPN ever mention what she has done in the new track league? Nope, but then again I don't recall Crouser being mentioned and I would highly suspect he won't be nominated for an ESPY (bullshit award I know) despite dealing with the blood clot issue to beat the second best shot putter of all time for a third straight time in the Olympics.

Simone Biles is a megastar and cultural phenom. Plenty of little girls dressing up like her for Halloween.

Serena, Caitlin, Simone are the contenders. I agree that Kournikova was a cultural fixture but not because of her game. Livvy Dunne is kind of an equivalent.

I honestly think this is an act. The dude has 12 NCs and 3 gold medals. I bet he makes more than a top WNBA coach at UCONN. He’s a giant a-hole but you can’t accuse him of not knowing women’s basketball.

He has to go recruit a bunch of players who are jealous of CC and is playing to his audience by being a hater.

The WNBA has to be the dumbest league alive to let this shit keep happening.

If I was Clark I would take Saudi money, Ice Cube money (whatever his goofy league is) and say fuck off to the WNBA that at this point seems to be indifferent to this hyper aggressive treatment

I think it would have to be a tennis star.

A female, American golf-star could reach a similar level these days but we haven't had anyone worth a shit in forever.

Like I'm pretty young but iirc Sortensam was a pretty big deal?

Oh I know about Babe. She came to mind. It was just so damn long ago I'm not sure how to quantify how big of a celebrity she was. I mean - you think people don't care about women's sports NOW.

yeah but that was kinda in her favor. she was such a novelty, and news was so not-overly-saturated that she was able to be a huge deal who was basically unanimously celebrated by fans of sport.

Ronda Rousey had incredible cultural influence for about a year including some deeply stupid speculation about her potential to fight men.  Before CC she was one of the few woman athletes capable of getting general men sports fans interested and talking about her or tuning in just to watch her.

CC, if the league can keep her healthy, has the biggest potential.

Sorenstam was definitely a big deal but was still a foreigner   Nancy Lopez was a star for about a decade back when there were 3 channels and no internet.

if the question is biggest megastar for American female athlete/non Olympian it is Serena followed closely by Evert, then maybe Hamm, King, Babe.

If you bring in non Americans, you have other contenders like Graf, Sorenstam, etc.

I like Portnoy. He's an unapologetic asshole that sticks to his guns and displays integrity. He probably has some shitty beliefs but who doesn't. He also seems very on board with women's sports.

I can immediately deduce a lot about someone that goes out of their way to shit on Portnoy or complain about what he does. It's a lazy fucking stance to take. I think he's fine.

Game flow.  The refs, who were horrible, had already given Clark a break when she very easily could have gotten a tech in the first half (see below):

This rivalry (I use the term loosely because it's so one sided) between Jacy Sheldon and Clark goes back to Big Ten basketball and Sheldon has guarded Clark for years.  She's very physical with her and guards her 94 feet for the most part.  Clark's team tend to dominate but she makes it very difficult for Clark and the game was chippy.  The refs did a very poor job in controlling the game and Mabrey probably deserved to get tossed by knocking her down, but again, they had granted Clark a small indiscretion so that's why they just T'd up a bunch of Sun players.

Gotta love the hottest girl on the team taking Clark's back and hard fouling Sheldon on a transition basket..... Indy need some of that protective mindset.

And I'm still not seeing why Clark got a tech (yes I know the Sun were assessed multiple techs, but the question remains - what did Clark do to merit a tech?)

A better angle of the cheap shot:

So I know Clark likes to talk, but she is like Larry Bird in that respect. He talked start to finish, but he backed it up. I watched the game today and Sheldon was physical from the jump. Clark told her to play basketball in the 1st half. Sheldon, being a scrub that plays for a garbage team that couldn't win the women's SEC right now, just kept hacking. Then Clark really let her have it after she bombed another three in her eye in the 4th. The Sun coach looked disinterested in doing anything to stop this. He looked more like he should have a job as a bellhop than a basketball coach. These players are just so dumb. Clark was clowning your entire backcourt all day long and made it look simple. Deal with it and enjoy being out of the league next year.

She might already be the biggest deal of all time.

Clips like that just prove my point.

This bitch is the fucking shit. My best friend from high school and I were getting together and watching her games LAST season.

And we weren't like some weird theater kids - we're both big fuckers that played sports and smoked a bunch of dope and were sort of cool I guess. We could both very easily act like we're too cool to follow someone like Caitlin Clark but we both follow her like a couple of fucking school girls.

She's that. Fucking. Cool.

She comes back from injury and instantly starts tearing teams up and dragging her team up the standings.

Like I said - I think she's already the biggest female sports star of all time.

It’s one unforced error after another. I cannot really fathom the stupidity of a league seeing its golden goose get roughed up repeatedly while doing nothing about it. Just the dumbest people possible in charge. I almost half expect for Silver to step in and run the league himself instead of watching the brain trust continue doing what they’re doing.

I’m going to take what is apparently an unpopular side on this in that this league needs more of this physical, cunty play and good old-fashioned jealousy. Gets eyeballs, which they sorely need. I’d like to see her teammates get more feisty in protecting her, but overall I see this as a positive direction for the league. Shit, most successful leagues are fucking soap operas. Why should the WNBA be any different?
