I don't think you are understanding the fact the coming together of the centrists was a strategy. If you look at the super tuesday thread - I applauded the Biden team and the strategist. I think bernie's team was caught flat footed. They are a bit too trusting. There were ways to avoid/deflect/parry that strategy. Bernie's team did not anticipate it. That was a mistake. Can't happen again. And sanders needs to be on the offense, since biden is the frontrunner.

No reluctance at all. I'm an upper middle class white male moderate (mostly, I hold fairly off the chart views about wealth inequality and authority). I'll vote for Biden twice then pay an MS-13 member to vote for him again in November. What I'm doing is expressing discomfort with a strategy decision that will very possibly come back to bite the collective "us" come election day. I've stated multiple times that I don't care about the actual chess move. I'm saying I care about how it will be perceived. And we have Bernie guys (and not just bt) saying "yeah, I'm not cool with it". The job now (if we assume Biden is our nominee) is for the collective "us" to heal and persuade the Bernie folks that everything is in good faith. Not a great start.

That said, it would still be inexcusable for anyone to vote Trump or stay home. I will never be convinced that that's an acceptable course of action. I don't think anyone who has kids (that they care about) that have to survive this society that the Baby boomer cockroaches consumed and shat out could ever justify not voting against Trump. So we remain on the same team, amigo.

The problem is that you are working under the assumption that Bernie Sanders is a viable candidate for President.  He's not capable of beating Trump.  He is literally every Republican talking point rolled up in to one nice package.  He will scare people away from voting Democrat and would hurt candidates down the ballot across the country.  He can't understand why everyone else doesn't think Fidel Castro is a swell guy for Christ's sake.

I mean, that's all fine and good and something I spent a lot of time gnashing teeth over. Is Biden good for the Hillary coalition plus the 70k (or whatever it was) extra votes needed in MI/WI/PA? Would Bernie's nontypical voters show up like he hopes?

But nothing you said really changes anything I said in the post you're addressing, as far as I can tell.

Very true. The same can be said for Biden minus the Castro part

We elected a guy named Hussein on 2008 and then a gameshow host.

You don't know shit about electability.

Bernie didn't get knocked out. Bernie is still standing.

And Joe couldn't even do it on his own power. They were put up against the ropes by a democratic socialist hated by every lever of power.

The veneer of "oh it was for electability reasons" is a joke. First off, electability is a myth and they know it. Secondly, if Joe can't even beat Bernie straight up, why such rock solid confidence in his ability to beat Trump?

Because everybody hates Trump. He is dangerously ignorant and corrupt. Diverse people unite against a common enemy that they hate better than finding common ground to rally around for.  At this point, so many dems will vote for a yellow dog over Trump and maybe a few never Trumper republicans too. Bernie is a lesser evil by thousands of magnitude than Trump in many people's minds and so is Joe. The vote blue no matter who shit is real, imo.

Whatever verb you want to use—you don’t think that’s inconsistent?

Is Obama supporting Bernie? Or is he the mastermind of an anti-Bernie conspiracy?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Obama can think Bernie is honest and powerful and consistent or whatever else the ad says AND work behind the scenes to get his VP ahead of Bernie. The idea that he is either a worshipful endorser or a hated enemy is childish.

It's a complicated relationship. I would imagine Joe's relationship with Obama also isn't as simple as the popular sales job.

What does it even matter, though?

I think when it comes down to it, this is the part I'm not sure I believe. It sure seems like the powers that be in the DNC don't agree. I think that's what's so disturbing to me. All us plebes are out here bickering about how we all must vote against Trump no matter what, and the Dem establishment is like "lol deal with it". It's pretty off putting. But, this will probably be the last I say about it, because I don't want to contribute in any way to Trump's inevitable re-election.

Hence all Trump's tweets about Bernie getting screwed. Those are aimed at sowing discord amongst the Dems and they are at least a little bit effective.

He knows he won't be winning the black vote but he is actively campaigning to blunt its numbers by playing up Biden's proud ownership of the crime bill, draconian drug sentencing, and cozying up to segregationists. He is also telling blacks that the Democrats are giving their jobs to immigrants.

Again, this will not flip the black vote en masse to the GOP but it will drive it down. Repelling people is Donald's forte -- his failed casinos ought to tell you that.

Trump's got six months to poison the airwaves this way and to expect blacks to turn out for Biden in numbers much higher than they did for Hillary is foolish. Some of that will be offset by what I predict to be greater Latino turnout so it might not be much of an issue for Biden, at least in the popular vote. Sadly the Latino vote doesn't amount to much in the battleground states of the Midwest. And I don't think the old white union guys are coming out in force for Biden either, despite the perceptions we have down here of Uncle Lunchpail Joe. They are culturally conservative and mainstream Democratic policies fucked them hard. What does Biden give them Trump doesn't? A return to the same policies that led them to Trump in the first place?

I like the Dems chances in PA, but it's no gimme. Michigan is a toss-up. Wisconsin and Ohio stay red.

Arizona I think will go blue.  Maybe Biden carries Virginia but I don't see anywhere else in the solid south flipping. Oh, maybe Florida. Who the fuck knows what Florida will do?

The more I think about it the more I see Florida and Pennsylvania being the two key battlegrounds.

Also, all of this prognostication comes with a coronavirus caveat and a Dow Jones advisory. Maybe this will be our first election day under martial law!

Biden voted for NAFTA. Biden voted for the Iraq War. Biden tried over and over to cut SS and Medicare.

Those Obama clips show how much of a political liability that stuff is because he kicked the asses of Biden and Clinton and won Rust Belt whites with that message.

I don’t agree with your first part. I can vote for Biden easily, I can’t say the same about Bernie. I probably would have cast the vote (or will still do it), but’s not as easy a vote as Biden will be. A number of Bernie’s policies are more polar opposite from my viewpoint than some of Trump’s, but Trump sucks as a human being and caretaker of what came before him which takes him to another level. Bernie and Trump are polar extremes and I don’t want to operate in extremes.

People are underestimating the effect of former Republicans voting in the democratic primary for the first (or second) time.  I’m in that group.  It is going to skew the results to the less radical candidates.

But you are not a neverbernie bro. I suspect not.

The neverbernie bros were here in 2016 and influenced the selection of the nominee. We lost thanks in part to their influence and its effects.

People like Michael Bloomberg, David Frum, Morning Joe/Nicole Wallace/Steve Schmidt (the republican who picked Sara Palin for McCain) - or any person who is neverbernie - are worsening the rift between the FDR/JFK/LBJ/Progressives and Center Left Democratic Part. Those two worked well together for many years. The FDR/Truman/Kennedy/LBJ progressive won a lot of elections against the Neverbernie Republicans. That is not all Republicans who switched over. Some had been fed up for a long time, because the hawkish side of the republican party earned a lot of money from Corporate Socialism in the Republican Party. Hell, even some of those Republicans who switch over recognized if you are going to have socialism - why are we "bankrupting" the country for corporate socialism and war-making when there is so much dislocation and despair within this nation. That was present before Trump. And it is hell for many Americans. The old American Dream is dead.

That hell purgatory existed before Trump - and caused Trump. That is why the "return to normalcy" mantra of the neverbernie bros needs to stop. It is destructive and helps Trump. We as a party have to project hope.

Like the hope Obama promised in 2008 - another election set in midst of destructive financial crisis that the poor, the working classes, and the marginalized have never recovered from to this day. Hope won (Obama) over over more of the same. You remember what the neverbernie bros were saying in 2008?  What the neverbernie bros are saying today about Sanders today.

I think we have good Republicans here who left the Republican Party because Trump was merely the final straw. "Return to normalcy" is hallmark of the  neverbernie bros, not all Republicans who have switched over. That continued strategy of the neverbernie bros will lose a large swath of New Deal Democrats and Obama Democrats. Normalcy wasn't that great in 2016.

I don't think we have any neverbernie bros here. I think most republican switchover would actually vote for bernie. I will vote for Biden if he is the ultimate nominee. I appreciate the Centrists who came around to the fact that Bloomberg was a danger to our economy. For those who didn't, - listen to centrists who saw Bloomberg as a bad omen. Bloomberg would have imploded the party into an ash heap. The Third Way advisors need to take a step back and start building narratives for either a bernie or biden general election. Biden needs to come back over to the FDR Democrats with open arms or will lose this election. They need to provide an optimistic message and hope.  A return to normalcy is not a winning message for FDR/Centrist reconciliation. The people will decide this. And the winner needs a path to reconciliation.

The nevertrumpers are small  in number, but loud. They are trumpian. They couldn't beat Trump in their own primary (why didn't any of the nevertrumpers primary Trump this year?). They helped cause the loss in 2016. They should NOT be influencing policy. They believed Trump would never be the nominee. And they had no strategy to beat him. They shouldn't be coaching this primary season. And the neverbernie bros need a talking to by centrists.

All the rich fucks are scared of Bernie. He is the president who would hurt them and benefit the common man. He seems like he would put together a competent team of people and get shit done.

It's honestly not that hard to figure out...also, how is there not more outrage over the obvious third world voter suppression tactics deployed by the garbage in charge of our state?

Hillary did better with black voters in 2016 vs Sanders than Biden is in 2020.

I know the people who supported mayonnaise voting base candidates for a year are having a great time pretending they were born a poor black child after their REI gift card candidate lost and they had to default to Joe, but this is what happened in 2016. White ladies in the suburbs tweeted "Black voters won't be havin' no Bernie #periodt" as Hillary racked up older black voters by massive margins.

Then the under 45 black vote didn't actually show up for Superpredator Clinton.

Are exit polls showing that Crime Bill Biden is doing better than Hilldawg with them?

Nope.

Look at the 2016 and 2020 Texas exit polls.

Clinton dominated harder with black voters.
Clinton dominated Latino voters.
Clinton was way closer with young voters overall.

The 45+ vote went up 6%, so that seems to be the group that's showing up more now. That's probably white conservatives and it's a risky proposition to count on them in November.

That’s a vast oversimplification. If it was that simple he would already be the nominee as the rich fucks are vastly outnumbered. Some of his policies are just plain stupid, some make sense. I think his stupid ones are off the charts stupid, which is why I’m uncomfortable supporting him. I also don’t think he will accomplish much of anything because of how tied to his principles he is and how unwilling he is to negotiate. It just ends in a stalemate with the US 4 years further down the road and not a lot of progress.

The Debate is the next big thing.

Should Warren and Tulsi qualify if they have no path to a majority?

If the Democrats are smart then Warren and Gabbard won't be there. Biden and Sanders obviously need to focus on each other and the optics of the two old white men completely ignoring the two women on stage for the entire debate would be awful.

Just wait until papa Obama comes out with a calming word to tell his people to come early, be loud, and vote blue.

And for another Austin reference intermixed with politics:

Obama is taking Biden to Cheers Shot Bar on 6th St. on his 81st birthday and asking for the Blue Wave. He is going to make Biden close his eyes and yell "Give me the wave, Give me the wave". And the blue wave is coming.

Obama created a right to healthcare in a way that was not previously possible. Obama took on massive govt funding programs in the face of historic recession and restored a shit economy. Not an attack on you, but it’s not like Obama just sat on his ass for 8 years without major accomplishments. I don’t really understand the narrative that a return to Obama policies is inconsistent with advancing liberal or progressive goals.

It wasn't an unwritten rule. It was a pledge Clyburn made to secure SC as one of the first primaries when they were competing with Miss, AL and Mich. That was a big get for Clyburn. The objection to SC was the weight of Clyburn's endorsement, so he pledged not to make one.

Clinton threatened him in 2008. Bernie was smart to not walk into that trap. C'mon. Try to be reasonable here.

This is exactly why Warren is going to endorse Biden.  Sanders refuses to engage in the fundamentals of politics.  It's why he has never accomplished anything in the Senate.  It's why he is not going to win the nomination (again).  And it's why, if he were somehow elected president, his would be a failed presidency.

The notion that you can't do business with someone who doesn't agree with you on all policy issues is astounding.  And it reflects the fact that Sanders' inability to expand his base of support isn't a bug, it's a feature.

It's a whole lot easier to criticize the system and talk about how change is needed than actually changing things. But we are in a place in US history where talking shit = getting elected.

AOC appears to have realized it was the wrong approach. She reached out yesterday with a tone of coalition building.

Bernie’s campaign might have realized it was the wrong approach. They are pushing out adds tying Obama to Bernie.

Is it too late to pivot? Would his online supporters even listen?

Is is even possible to pivot in a meaningful way for a guy who’s entire career has been about applying a litmus test and alienating others?

Bernie is a populist - just like trump. Are people saying they don’t want another populist?

I think Ezra Klein is correct. Bernie is just running the wrong campaign.

I think Ezra Klein is correct. Bernie is just running the wrong campaign.

He puts out an ad with Obama, and then holds a press conference griping about "the corporatist establishment."

Nobody's fooled by that stupid ad, anymore than anybody was fooled by Bloomberg's no-less-stupid ad that implied that he had Obama's support.  Bernie's supporters aren't even buying it, judging by the "pointing out" of the conspiracy theory that Obama stage-managed the Beto/Pete/Amy endorsefest Monday night.

AOC is a good politician.  She wants to get shit done.  That's why she talked about compromise on M4A.  What did Bernie do?  Just a few days later, he threw her under the bus and declared that his plan "was the compromise" (from what, exactly, is unclear).  He then went out and said that he wouldn't pick a running mate who didn't 100% agree with his M4A plan.

So seriously--on the most consequential decision that a presidential candidate makes, he doesn't want to use that to expand his base of support?  Of course he doesn't.  Because that's not who Bernie is.

Just another reason why our two-party system is a joke. A Bernie supporter shares almost zero ideological positions as a Biden supporter. But sure, lets put them in the same party and hope they can agree on stuff.

Well, Bernie isn’t a Democrat until he runs for president so they aren’t really in the same party.
