Interesting to look back at A&M last year and how it is sort of a similar ride that we are on:

-Started SEC play 15-6 and 39-6 overall, became #1 the same exact week that we became #1 this year

-Lost 2 series in a row in May, on the road at LSU and to an awful Ole Miss team

-Won their final series of the year at home against Arkansas

-2 and BBQ in the SEC tournament

-#3 national seed

Yeah. If we win our last series, we are conference champs.

If either UT wins the last series of the season, we are conference champs.

My wild ass prediction is Grayson Saunier is going to start the third game this week. Keeps Grubbs in the bullpen and allows Flores to go back to the bullpen, where he has looked more comfortable.

I like that move.

I know as much about pitching management as my dogs do, but I'd think Harrison 1 and Riojas 3.  No idea on 2.  We have to find a "Friday" starter.

I really doubt they are bumping Harrison up 2 full days this late in the season.

This is the last week of a real rotation anyway then you do whatever you want to set your pitching up for a regional depending on matchups.

Flores has not been good in conference play, right handed Kade Bing, better stuff, higher ceiling, and worse command. He’s allowing 2 base runners an inning in conference play.

14.1 IP - 10 H - 9 BBs - 8 HBPs

Wish they would have skipped Ruger’s start this past weekend. Based on Schloss’ comments with Zach in his OB interview, Saunier or Howard is probably getting a start this weekend which I like, wish it would have happened this past weekend.

I don’t think they will but I don’t see the downside to starting Saunier/Howard on Thursday and keeping Ruger and Harrison on normal rest

Can’t move Harrison, especially at this point in the season and on a short week.

If we have the SEC championship on the line on Saturday and start Howard, I don’t even know what to say. Start Grubbs. It’s not that hard.

Riojas threw 35 pitches against Florida. He'll start the first game against OU if healthy. BTW is there any truth to the team illness rumor?

yes

How about we start Howard in the quarterfinals and then if we happen to win, use a good starter in the semifinals and final. And if we don’t win, oh well rest up.

I’m not talking about the SEC tournament. I’m talking about this Saturday against OU.

We did start Grubbs already against Arkansas and he got rocked 2nd time through the order, his stuff plays better out of the bullpen. He doesn’t have anything to take the hitters eyes up, he lives at the bottom, once Arkansas figured that out they started teeing off on his slider

Oh, ok. I guess that Arkansas game is more indicative than the 12 starts he made last year.

What are your thoughts on Riojas last 2 starts? Or Jason Flores?

Opponents hit .270 against him last year. He was more a quality inning eater than an elite pitcher that could mow down an elite lineup. Big reason why they rolled with Lebarron against A&M in the regional. The slider has gotten much better which is why he has taken a massive step forward, relies less on batted ball luck because the slider is a legit put away pitch. Last year he was pretty much Tristan Stevens.

Ruger looks fatigued, fastball is down to 92. Evidently Max and Schloss don’t think it is a concern. Don’t have any inside info to operate on.

See post above on Jason

This weekend is the last opportunity you’ll have outside of the conference tournament to take a look at some guys (Saunier/Howard) that have shown promise the 2nd half of the season There is no guarantee we will play more than one game in Hoover.

Cody’s last 11.2 innings he hasn’t allowed a run and struck out 13

The only thing that gives me pause about Saunier is he is still giving up a lot of free passes (7 in his last 8.2 innings across 3 appearances).

There really isn’t great options or answers. Ruger’s last two outings have been ass but he has been our guy all year so at some level you have to just trust he will get back on the horse. He has a track record. I am just really against jerking around established guys (Harrison, Volantis, Grubbs, Burns) into different roles this late in the year.

I think the bottom line is this is the last week you need a true rotation so pressing the panic button won’t do much. Luke Harrison could be pitching the opening regional game against a dangerous 4 seed or we could be throwing Kade Bing against the SWAC champion.

Beat ou, win the sec, fuck the conference tourney. I would also like to say fuck the ephis pitch, work location and get outs. The Savaanna nannas can wait.

Man I saw Steve Labay ephis the shit out of Mississippi State at the hottest fucking regional game at DF I have ever been to.

It was one of the greatest pitched games in the clutch (we had to win and beat them again that night) I have ever seen.

AAS on Belyeu.  "Hope Springs Eternal"

Quote

Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle said he would "like" to get injured star Max Belyeu some at-bats in a three-game series against Oklahoma that begins on Thursday night.

"He had a really good day (Tuesday)," Schlossnagle said on Wednesday morning. "I think he's still working through some things, but he's super close, and I think the rate of progression he's had in the last week has been way faster than in the previous weeks. So we're going to get up there tonight and hit and we'll have a little hitting session (Thursday) in the morning and then, of course, BP before the game. So I think if it keeps progressing, I'd like to get him in there."

Schlossnagle said last week that it would be a matter of pain tolerance for Belyeu, who is hitting .358 with a 1.107 OPS and six home runs through 24 games this year.

"We need him, whether he's at the highest percentage or not," Schlossnagle said. "Once he gets to a certain threshold, we need to get him at-bats. I don't want his first at-bats to be in the regional or maybe even the SEC Tournament."

Belyeu could play some right field against the Sooners, too, according to Schlossnagle.

Medical professionals had expected Belyeu's injured thumb on his right glove hand to make it difficult for him to squeeze the glove, but it hasn't turned out that way.

"He's been moving around the outfield for a while," Schlossnagle said.

I'd start Saunier Thursday and tell him he's going 5 unless his arm falls off. Figure out where we are from there. If its a close game, use your trusted bullpen guys. If it's a blowout either way, start looking at the seldom used guys and try to find a couple that could give you an inning or two in a regional. Keep Harrison and Ruger in their more comfortable Game 2/3 roles with a couple extra rest days for Ruger.

I imagine they still have us winning the SEC regular season title, and its hard for the seeding committee not to give the SEC champ the top overall seed when it is so stacked

Mmhm

The top 3 seeds last year were Tenn, Kentucky and aggy.  Tenn and Kentucky had the best records in the SEC - they had divisions last year.  Tenn won the SECT, so they got #1 and Kentucky #2

I think this year, it may depend on if we win the SEC outright.  If we share the title, and the team we share it with wins the SECT, they probably get it and Texas is #2

Just my guess

Didn't Saunier get a start after a great relief appearance and after many walks and HBP he was gone in the first .....maybe second inning?   I seem to rememeber him sucking for a start.

His only start was at TxSt:

It's possible you're thinking of Rerick. Against UTSA, he didn't record an out before being yanked.

There could be some strategy involved in just throwing a wildcard against Witherspoon tomorrow in a game you know you are facing an uphill battle in, then lining up Ruger and Luke against their #2 and #3 arms.

Kiley McDaniel released his updated top 150 draft prospects today. Of interest to Texas

13. Fien (guy has an obvious choice of walkup song)

17. Cunningham

48. Max

92. Spencer

134. Xavier Mitchell

149. Brett Crossland

Im a little surprised at no Galvan. Gotta think it'd be worth it to us financially to bring him back next season, but if he wants to be an MLB player he probably needs to go into the minors

Which is interesting, as Fien and Cunningham are the only players at their respective positions (SS & 3B) in our 2025 recruiting class. Otherwise, it's largely an absolute cornucopia of pitching talent, which will be well received by us all.

2B: Mendoza will be back.

3B: ARod and Borba will be back. One will play 3B, while the other battles for the DH spot.

1B: I'm curious what happens here. Chamberlin? Portal?

SS: does Flores come back since he's had huge drop off offensively? Seems 100% likely we go to the portal here, if not.

C: any chance Galvan comes back? Can Chamberlin be an every day catcher? Service won't be, and we certainly won't be starting true freshman, Courville. Seems likely we go to the portal here too.

I still would guess A Rod is our SS next year. Spend the bucks on arms and high OBP guys with power to play 1B/DH and catcher.

Its a flyball league. The typical RF/G for a SS has dropped from high 4s to mid 3s in the last decade. Tennesee won the title last year with bigass Dean Curley playing short

Blake Munroe

After two straight series losses against Arkansas and Florida, the Longhorns look to rebound this weekend (starting tonight) against a tough Oklahoma squad.

Let's just get right to the question that is on everyone's mind... Will OF Max Belyeu play this weekend?

I spoke with a couple of sources just a few minutes ago and was told that nothing is certain as of Thursday morning.  The good news is that Belyeu is listed as "probable" on the SEC injury report. He took in batting practice yesterday and will this morning as well.

It's doubtful you'll see him roaming the outfield, but I do believe you'll see Belyeu at the plate in Norman.

"I think he'll hit at some point this weekend," one source told OTF.

---

The starting pitchers for the weekend will be:

Thursday - Kade Bing

Friday - Ruger Riojas

Saturday - Luke Harrison

Excited to see how the Longhorns adapt to SEC play under Schlossnagle's leadership. The return of key players like Max Belyeu and Jalin Flores should bolster our offense, but pitching depth remains a concern. Hoping the new coaching staff can develop our bullpen effectively. Looking forward to a competitive season and a strong showing in Omaha!
