2024-2025 Houston Rockets thread - Prepare for Liftoff 🚀 [Now Featuring Kevin Durant]

So the Sun’s GM is Ishbia’s fraternity brother from Michigan State. Their fanbase is terrified they’ll take Jase Richardson at 10.

I think they should trade back and try and get more picks. They really need young bodies to start over. 2-3 picks between 19-30 would really accelerate their rebuild.

Zach Lowe was full in spin mode today. Basically said the Heat and Raptors don’t view themselves as win now contenders and they blinked on a KD trade. I’d argue any playoff or play in teams are contenders in the East next season.

So I was joking about taking credit for the Durant to Rockets trade but I did talk to Ishbia about it and asked him if his picks back and salary cap matching would be something they would do.
He said “fuck those picks I don’t want them back we are going to be good and they are going to suck”.
Obviously he got this years pick back but that was already a known quantity. That’s his thought process- not saying he’s right.

Lot of teams have been doing this and betting on themselves, Minny with Gobert, Cleveland with Mitchell, Atlanta with Murray, Brooklyn with Durant, Phoenix with Durant, Magic with Bane, Knicks with Bridges. It's just not often we see the teams try to dig themselves out of the hole like this.

I figured this was the Suns mindset, but I just don't see how they trade Beal for anyone even remotely helpful this season or next to get better. 53m and 57m remaining on it is just nuts. You might be able to trade him for Lillard, since he's injured. Other options may be Lavine, Paul George, Jamal Murray, or some other terrible bundle of bad contracts.  They would probably have to send out #10 and all those 2nds to make a team bite on that offer, but I just don't see it happening.  In any case, it's great for the Rockets future picks to help backfill some of the talent that may graduate out of their system and become too expensive to keep.  Hope it works out and keeps the train rolling.

With this KD trade not becoming “official” until league year starts 7/6, how does the pick at 10 work mechanically? Does Phx tell us who they want and we pick them? Sure this happens quite a bit with trades at this point of the calendar, but was curious

The new market efficiency might be betting on continued Suns futility.  Their future draft picks are going to become the most valuable in the NBA.

Also, I listed to my first Bill Simmons podcast since Grantland days and I think Kevin Durant would have been far more valuable (to the Suns) 24 hours after the trade and once the finals were over due to the wide open East.

I think what scared Riley the most was how Butler acted while trying to get out. Maybe he fears giving up assets for Durant and then the team sucking and Durant wanting out.

The Locked On Rockets guy thinks they might buy back into the second round to target a rotational player rather than paying the vet minimum.

Sounds like Holiday and Landale are gone unless their player options can be packaged in a trade. Tate would have to come back at the vet minimum.

He thinks the only reason to pick up FVV’s club option is to go big trade hunting in season.

Finding rotational guys in the 2nd round is a crapshoot especially if they are wanting the guy to play anytime soon.

Most 2nd round picks never contribute in the NBA.

Yep

If I had 5 second round picks I’d be fishing for a randomly good European player though.

LOL. Fuck E. Acho. Embarrassment to the University.

Acho in the formula is 0 ÷ 2 = 0, or if you count practice squad only teams, it's 0 ÷ 3 = 0. Yikes

Durant always ends up burning Acho’s ass on the internet, but the dumbfuck keeps coming back for more.

Agree with the first, but not sure if dumbfuck is truly the best name for him.

The great thing about being in the media be it print, tv, radio, or social is that you can be wrong over and over and over and over again as long as people are watching, talking, replying and following.

A very simple formula that made Rush Limbaugh a multimillionaire and look at the careers it has provided for Skip, Cowherd, and Stephen A.

KD is the perfect person for Acho to throw shit at because he knows KD will respond, KD has a ton of followers who will gladly pile on to defend KD, and will be happy to link what he said all to prove just how stupid Acho is when in fact they are just widening the exposure a bit more at a time.

The world of media isn't designed to periodically purge itself of those who only stir shit up and don't really contribute,  heck,  the only difference between Acho and a good number of posters on the internet is he is getting paid for saying and posting such things and the rest are helping him getting paid.

Plus I never knew he had five fingers AND a thumb on his right hand.

That one makes sense, that guy looks like a damn alien anyhow so it makes perfect sense and explains why he has such control over the ball.

Great deal for Fred and the team! I hope KD signs a similar extension. 2 years 50-60m with a player option would be excellent for him.

That MLE is juicy, lots of guys would be good gets. Ty Jerome, Malik Beasley, DFS, Gary Trent Jr, Kennard, etc. lots of good shooters out there to be gotten.  Or maybe Harden opts out and comes home to Houston and finally win a ring.

Perfect contract for Fred. A year and about $40 million less than what many of us were expecting.

I won’t call not trading Jock a whiff, but I would have liked to trade him. I liked his offensive game, but he was a turnstile on defense. It would be really funny if the Lakers picked up another non rim protector big.

With the Durant trade and FVV extension, Rafael has proven that he is an elite, top 5 in the NBA GM. Rafael’s track record with trades and contracts was not stellar before this. He has improved markedly over the years and has crushed it when it matters the most with these deals. If we win a championship with this core, Rafael will be on the same level as Luhnow the GOAT 🐐 in the pantheon of Houston sports greats, probably even higher since he won’t have the taint of scandal.

I want us to pry Quentin Grimes from the Sixers with that money by making on offer since he is a RFA. I wished we had drafted him straight from UH.
