They’re too concerned with appearing biased toward the left.  Huge pussies they are.

In fairness, it's a defining strategy of fascism: control the message by accusing everyone of being unfair and claiming a mountain of grievances. That puts outlets that act in good faith on the back heel, as no impartial coverage would EVER satisfy their propaganda requirements.

It's why they're attacking Wikipedia for fucks sake

"Why do you insist on telling such obvious lies?" should have been the theme of the rest of that interview. "Do you think the American people are really that stupid?"

Going to take a step back from my comment about Venezuela. I did not see the Iwo Amphibian group was also going off the coast. Yeah, we are going to take Maracaibo. Or threaten.
The deployment of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit gives the US the capability to attack targets on land — a much different specialty than that possessed by the nimble Coast Guard cutters and high-speed boats that normally intercept South American cocaine.

Or taco.

There will be a threat with no follow through. We will spend a shit ton of money to have the whole ARG go down there, and then come back, just for show.

The only result will be that tfg and the US by extension has just a little less credibility.

Looks like college football is a hotbed for MAGA fascists and medievalists.

No surprise in Trump's America .... and one of the reasons I lost nearly all my interest in UT football.

When star QBs are openly MAGA-fascist (and doing Trump dances in games) and the celebs on the sideline, like Clemens, are openly fascist, along with Hot Wheels, then I am out!! I don't give a shit if one is named Manning. Fuck'em.

I know that view is heretical here at Surly, but I just do not care about football or hardly any sports in general (used to be big tennis fan) .... when MAGA nation is dragging secular-scientific civilization backward by centuries into medievalism. Just sayin'

Same. I realized yesterday as I watched OSU’s defense humiliate Arch and Sark that I just don’t give a shit anymore. College football is morphing into some weird fascist bread and circus cultural celebration.

And the massive amount universities and alumni spend to support the football teams (rather than academics) is perfectly symbolic of how fucked up American culture has become. We are not a serious country.

Weird that he went all out for Pete Rose in the Hall, and now Roger Clemens, but not Barry Bonds. That's really curious and I can't for the life of me think of one reason why.

Spot on. Let me add the other turn offs ...

-- flyovers by military jet fighters and bombers.

-- giant US flags in a lot of games

-- overall militarization of football sets stage for militarization of cities

-- far too much patriotism and nationalism ...

-- idiotic herd and tribal behavior in wearing the school colors. (I have two degrees from UT and have worn just 2-3 pieces of longhorn gear. Baseball caps for jogging and tennis, the last one was over 20 years ago).

-- obscene prices for drinks and snacks

-- screens with loud and annoying ads everywhere

-- extra loud PA announcers.

-- the list goes on...

-- Bevo Blvd is true bread and circuses.

-- Add on the obvious fascism and Idiocracy and I am out.

This has troubled me for quite some time.  It's worse at the college level because it seems to pit academics directly against athletics, but may be more exaggerated at the pro sports level because shit's so expensive.

That must be a relic of papa whiskey tango fans that now trend Trump.

I am curious if it's a shitty LLM that's been fine tuned on trump rhetoric. Lord knows there's enough posts out there to build a dataset

I fucking hate our media so much. "You've been so hard on Trump! You call him names, like President Bone Spurs, only because he never served! Would he ever call someone else names??"

I have had the cost and spending issue on my mind for a long time now.  PBS specials back in the day on the original intent of the NCAA basically being to deny workman's comp to college athletes was part of the awakening.  Then other things about how (at the time) college players weren't being paid while their coaches raked in millions.  Was it Colbert or Stewart or maybe John Oliver who did a bit on the Final Four.  Probably Oliver.  Anyway it was enlightening as well at the time.   I guess some of that is evening up with things now(?)  But just on a basic level the millions for athletics while students go into great debt bothers me immensely.  That and when I cut cable years ago led to me barely paying attention.  I liked too many posters on surly to ever totally quit it, but the sports boards are my least visited boards.  Tuned in yesterday though.

The NFL has its own issues and all of that militarization and nationalism seems to be present in it and in MLB.  Good lord the 'god bless america' thing in MLB.  Ugh.  And its all toys for billionaires who are the problem in this world.  Have not watched an NBA game in forever so can't speak to it.  But you're right, seeing it at the college level is something else.

All of that said we are of course desperate for entertainment and things to discuss for fun.  There is a built in camaraderie among sports fans.  Perhaps even more so among alumni.  The social aspect I sometimes absolutely miss.   And the feats that these athletes perform at times are truly astounding to watch. There  is also that dangerous cozy blanket of nostalgia always at play.   For a few hours you try not to worry about the end of the world.  And mute the damn commercials.

I don’t follow WWE specifically (and really never have). But I am a fan of local indie wrestling. My sense is the fanbase has evolved since kayfabe died.

It used to be that wrestling shows were chock full of yokels who thought it was real. There were a few smart fans who were in on the gag (so-called “smarks” in wrestling lingo) and there to enjoy the show with tongue firmly in cheek. But they weren’t the majority.

These days, the crowd is all smarks. Everyone knows it’s fake. The secret is out. So the fans who are looking for real combat now go to shit like UFC, which skews right.

In my experience, modern wrestling crowds are pretty diverse and open-minded. The promotion in Austin hosts drag shows every so often and openly supports the LGBTQ community. (Okay, it’s Austin. But still…) People don’t go to wrestling for fights; they go to watch performance art.

Did kayfabe die or just transfer to right-wing politics?
