Here it is August 18th and we’ve avoided a major storm in the Gulf with nothing in the modeling to suggest anything developing this week.

If we could get through the next two weeks without a named storm, that would have to be a record of some sorts.

As if on cue.........

Man.  Remember that one so well.  Was supposed to be the first day of school for us.  Went outside in the eye with my old man while he patched a couple of spots on the roof that had taken some hits.  Fortunately/unfortunately, our old cedar shingle roof was so waterlogged that the shingles were heavy, so they mostly didn't get blown off.  No power for three days.  Otherwise, we came out ok.

brother?

From a Meteorologist out of New Orleans….

“2025 is setting the good kind of records. Zero storms between August 28th - September 15th is beyond rare, the only known year that occurred was 1939 way before satellites. So technically this hasn’t happened in recorded history.”

So this means that we’re getting wiped out by a December hurricane?

Melissa about to wreck Jamaica, parts of Cuba and poor Haiti.

Melissa may reach Category 5, poses great danger to Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti

Melissa is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane over the Caribbean and could end up being one of the strongest of the season with lives and property in peril from Jamaica to Cuba and Haiti.

Haiti has really had a hard go at it.

Yeah, buddy called me from there yesterday. It is going to be bad. North Coast of the DR is also going to flood.

But damn, Jamaica? Cat 4-5? And moving so slow could park.

Shit, dude. These days, we’re more likely to hit em with air strikes than air lifts. This hemisphere is fucked, as we’ve decided to be its chief predator.

At least Jamaica still is a member of the Commonwealth.

There has been rather strong language used when communicating Melissa’s impact to Jamaica, and rightfully so.

The National Hurricane Center warned on Saturday, “Melissa is still expected to make landfall in Jamaica as an upper-end Category 4 hurricane, which could be the strongest direct landfall for the island since tropical cyclone record keeping has been made in the Atlantic Basin.”

While Melissa could make landfall as a high-end Category 4 storm or even a Category 5, the practical difference between the two is minimal.
