Lefau being gone makes it more appealing for higher end portal options at LB to come here as well.

I liked the guy, but if we’re looking to maximize the roster, this move makes sense.

Not that shocked anymore with personnel decisions. These kids wanted to be treated like professionals, and now they are. Texas didn't think he was worth the capital investment anymore. Good luck at your next school.

We'll see who they get to replace him in the portal before I call it the right decision.

They cut bait with several "returning starters" in the secondary after 2023 and it paid off in a big way.

Returning production means very little if it was mostly bad production.

Three dudes means you gotta spend time and money finding depth pieces in the portal.

If I have to do anything, we’re screwed.

I get your point, I just think this is the new reality. I only follow Texas but I assume a lot of schools deal with this every year.

Even if you flip Spence to Will that's two dudes total who have taken real snaps on your team right now.

I was just thinking about that. Didn't Spence play 1 of the ILB roles at arky?

Pretty sure it's been mentioned by some 995r they plan to use Spence in similar fashion to how Trey Moore was this season. Sounds plausible but worth what you paid for it...

He has played very well at times and also some had some bad moments.  I remember more good plays than bad personally.  he was by no means was he a weakness during his time here.   None of the guys behind him could beat him out so I'm not going to pretend like Barnes is going to get reps and be better right off the bat.  I could also see a situation where Atkinson is more or less penciled in as a starter and perhaps the staff prefers Smith at the same position.  LB was a big strength this year with Hill, Lefau, Smith, Moore, Spence.  Now we're left with Smith and Spence and neither were full time starters to go with some talented young guys.  The position is definitely a question mark going into next year.

Gerry and CJ made it sound like he was kicked off the team

Pretty sure it had to do with his NIL ask versus what Texas thought he was worth.

Listening to them, as well.  One read on it is Sark is willing to lose someone graded as “satisfactory” perhaps over money.  If true, it’s an interesting show of self-discipline.

It could also be more of a “you’re not guaranteed a spot next year because we were looking for an A Hill replacement and got more interest than we expected”, bear in mind this is all conjecture.

Any chance we kick the tires on this kid or are we holding out for Baugh / something bigger?

I think he's on our radar. Probably the Lacy/Baugh backup plan.

I’ll miss locals at the bar actually knowing a Texas players name and being mildly invested when our game is on, that’s about it.

After the first few games, most fans will know the names of the standout players.
It’s not much different from being able to follow who’s on what team in the NFL outside of the QB

I was referring to Lefau because I’m in Hawaii and he’s always someones cousin or friends friend here

We need at least 2 offensive line starters, if we can find 3 then that is great. Just this year Ohio St brought in what, 3? They got 2 starters out of that.

at a minimum, the OL needs a stud anchor

He certainly looks the part on HS film.

Bear in mind he’s still growing, but he’s the TyAnthony Smith replacement, not a thumper in the middle.  Maybe they will move Smith inside now that he’s had three years of strength and weight gains.

Hill, by comparison, had an NFL body and measurables as a freshman.

They said it was Texas’ decision and that if it was up to Lefau he would be playing in the bowl game.   If it was just an NIL mismatch why wouldn’t Texas let him play?  That would be dumb.

Atkinson is the best LB we have recruited since DJ. He’s a better prospect than Hill was. He’s more instinctual and good with his coverage drops. True sideline to sideline guy.

Spence made one of the better open field tackles I've seen in awhile vs arky.

He got decleated by Ruben Owens.

Situation is fluid.

You might end up being right, but Hill was at the very least similarly ranked.    24/7 actually had Hill ranked slightly higher.  Hill is a bigger dude so i would suspect Atkinson is better in coverage.

Hill's superpower was getting after the qb.   The first spring game it was obvious that Hill was going to be a first rounder if he kept it all together.

I just didn’t think the implication was that this was disciplinary.

What do you mean, Smith had replaced him when Hill, Smith, and Lefau were all healthy.

I feel like lefau wouldn’t have transferred pre-NIL. But in a world where there’s always someone willing to pay a penny more if you’re a solid player. Really thought he was pencilled in next year and expected great things, thought he made plays but also did get beat by tight ends more than a few times. With how good Atkinson is supposed to be, hope he has an ant hill kind of freshman year.

One thing I noticed watching College Football this year was an absurd amount of gap busts and huge RB runs. You never really seen that on Texas defensive tape. Ant and Liona were rarely out of position. Missed tackle here or there? Yeah. I’d take that over a 50 yard touchdown run though. Those two were apart of some nasty Texas rush defenses.
