Somehow Kelly came off as more likeable than Elko. And got dang Elko is tubbiest lard this side of the Mississippi.

Also there was a scene of board of regents members on the sideline with Elko at practice. No wonder they never win shit.

^^i just finished it last night as well. Elko needs to stay away from profile camera angles, that belly is massive. And what was that 4XL cartoon looking pullover for the Texas game? The AD should say something.

Back to sumlin, if I recall, for his time at Arizona he was the highest paid coach in America because aggy didn’t have the clause every other team has where your buyout goes away when you get hired by another school?

I’m not sure that’s true, because if i remember correctly, Sumlins entire buyout was due in one lump sum 60 days after termination. I think that was 35 million.

The only easy for Elko to stay away from TV angles is to avoid being on TV.  There aren't good angles for someone that round

At least Herman had the brains to mix in some cocaine every so often to offset his alcoholism and he’d slim down.

The Netflix episode on aggy was perfect.  One commentator called them Texas 8&4 and perennial underachievers, another said they love all these traditions but to everyone else they're just strange.  And then they have a short segment on the yell leaders.  I can just see the rest of the country watching this and thinking WTF.

I had forgotten how thoroughly we whipped their ass.  2 huge red zone turnovers, one of which was a pick 6 for their only score.  Really should have been a methodical 31-0 beat down.

The best part is the bulk of the game coverage on the show was pro-aggie and showed the 2 turn overs. Yet, aggie, and my dear boy Graham specifically, went on a rant about the BOMC now stemming to BONC. I'm sure Texas will be responsible for some upcoming liberal "woke" pro-Austin aka Longhorn productions on Apple and Amazon in the very near future.

What starts here changes the world.

It is what it is. Imma poop there and get my beaver nuggets; my $7 contribution once or twice a year isn’t going to do much.

Don’t stop at Love’s either I guess, you’re just bankrolling OU.

I forgot to add the interview with York where he said he was a top 1000 player out of high school, but Texas didn't want him while aggy did.  York actually seemed like a decent kid, but it screamed little brother.  Top 1000?

Phil Steele was on with Plank on XM 84 earlier today. College Sports Saturday is the show and I generally enjoy both Steele's segments on various shows and Plank as a talking head except when he's talking about OU.

They were discussing ATM and Steele can't help himself. He's high on ATM largely because Elko is calling plays on defense, Marcel Reed and "they're returning so many starts across their OLine". You can tell that Steele gets taken in by the coaches who will actually talk to him and not just send an assistant for the phone call. Elko knows how to handle these guys and he's sold Steele on his team.

I come back to, is anyone actually watching the games? Steele's job is to know these teams inside and out. Does he watch any film? I'm hoping not in this case, because if he is and he thinks that returning Reed and that OL with Klein as the OC is a big plus for them, he doesn't know what in the fuck he is talking about with regard to gameplay.

In all of the ATM discussion I've heard and read from elsewhere since last season, I have not experienced one moment in listening/reading in which anyone has discussed either the net negative talent flow with the portal for ATM or their futility on the road.

No one has pointed out that they appear to have a systemic problem with playing on the road. This goes back as far as the eye can wander on a season by season basis. They had a .500 road record last season by beating juggernauts pre-Lagway Florida and 0-8-in-the-conference Mississippi State. They had their pants pulled down in public with South Carolina shouting "Yo! Check us out!" behind them as the CFB nation stared in amusement. They shit the bed against Auburn. They went 0-4 in 2023, 0-4 in 2022, and (2-2 if you count Colorado, as the game was in Denver and ATM won 10-7 against that piss poor team) 1-2 in 2021. They went 4-1 in 2020, getting blown out by Bama and beating 4 teams with a combined record that season of 15-26.

I don't even know the last time they had a winning record during a non-corona season on the road because I got tired of looking. I'm sure they had one in 2012 simply due to the overall record being 11-2. They haven't had one from 2015 forward and that's while playing a usually terrible SCar on the road every other season. 9 of the last 10 seasons has produced .500 or worse, usually worse, and the 1 winning season was a national anomaly.

This year they play @Notre Dame, @ Texas, @ Arkansas, @ Missouri, and @ LSU . Now, maybe they pull a few of those out, say Arkansas and Missouri (I am taking Missouri, but work with me here). If they win all home games as well, that's 9-3 and staring down the barrel of a good bowl game, that they will inevitably choke. 9-4 ceiling. I don't see how you look at that program for this season and tell anyone with a straight face that they're going 3-2 or better on the road. The assumption that they'll also go undefeated at home is doing a lot of work as well.

Preseason hype for A&M is always a living example of base rate neglect.

Ignore everything you know and all rational thought because this year is different because of one marginal change!

Here's an article from Tarp today. As I read his stuff frequently, I find myself starting to wonder if the guy isn't some sort of extremely subtle, masterful performance artist. Is this article satire? Is he quietly mocking Reed? Klein? His readers? Or is he just really this much of a redass that he's posting hopium regarding Reed's potential development as a downfield thrower? It's fantastic either way.

Highlights:

-Reed absolutely sucked throwing past 15 yards last season.

-His sucking was due, in Tarp's view, to his scrambling and not setting his feet.

-Tarp thinks Reed needs to take a heaving dump on his core asset - his mobility - in order to throw better downfield. If they don't do that, they're not going to win as many as they'd like.

-Tarp goes on to ignore the potential issue that they may only have one downfield threat on the WR corps in Craver, who weighs 165 pounds soaking wet and had injury issues last year at Miss State.

-Despite recent evidence to the contrary, plus last season and the spring, Tarp is confident that Reed will turn a corner throwing deep this season.

A quick look at Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed and the long ball

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed is firmly established as the Aggies' signal caller of the present due to a combination of traits…he's athletic, smart, and dedicated. He is more experienced which has given him a better command of the offense and passing scheme and his legs should enable him to make the type of off schedule plays that can swing games A&M's way. The program even went out and got more toys at receiver in the off season that should make him even more effective.

However, if Reed and the offense are going to have the type of year that everyone believes that they will, then he is going to have to get better throws beyond the first down marker. It's not that he doesn't want to pull the trigger on such throws…he's simply got to have the footwork, delivery, protection, and threats to improve significantly in that area.

Pro Football Focus' numbers reveal just how far Reed has to go as his completion rate beyond 20 yards, yards per attempt, average depth of target, his percentage of big time throws, and his NFL passer rating were all in the bottom third of the Southeastern Conference quarterbacks. This came in spite of the fact that his average time to throw was in the top five in the league (his mobility came in handy in terms of buying him to make them) and he had zero drops from his receivers on these plays.

Reed has a high scramble rate (over 16% per ESPN) which is to be expected from a player with his youth and athleticism. Thus, his ability to get the ball down the field more accurately begins with him moving around less after the snap so that he has a better chance of setting his feet to deliver the ball.

Reed lacks a powerful frame that can propel the ball like many drop back quarterbacks who have his height but can outweigh him by as much as 50 pounds or so. For example, both Florida's DJ Lagway and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers both had around a 50% completion rate, averaged 15 to 20 yards per attempt, and a big time throw rate of over 28%. Their ability to produce highlight worthy plays was a big reason behind their teams' late season 2024 runs. For Reed, that means a premium on making his delivery more efficient to maximize his power and accuracy since his margin for error is probably less.

Reed can get the ball out quickly and change arm angles to make the most out of the shorter throws in the offense. He can also move the chains via those throws or his legs to extend drives. Even so, the Aggies ranked near the lower end of the SEC in pass plays over 20 yards in 2024. If you're going to shorten drives with chunk plays (which means less chance of having them derailed via mistakes), then Reed's ability to make the most of his downfield throws is the missing element in A&M's offense that can perhaps turn it into an elite weapon.

Well @closetojumping perhaps Tarp has found LDS and is of the position that Reed will find his long game in a magic hat.

As for Steele and over rating, he's not alone in the media and it just boggles my mind. This year aggie along with PSU and the other love fest media frequently for no good reason Miami are all the WTFs. At least PSU has a track record, granted its choking all big games where talent is equal or greater, but the same can't be said for Miami and certainly not aggie.

He said very similar things about OU. Their OL is very good, their WR is better than average, blah, blah Venables will coach a good defense. Mateer is a perfect fit, OU can go from 6-7 to the playoffs.

Steele is losing is fucking mind because he's not doing very good analysis anymore.

it's always posted in both football and 995

i think it's in a recent aggy fact thursday

anyway, it was thursday 28 aug 14, over #9 cock on the road

3999 days ago

tomorrow is the 4000-day anniversary of the last aggy true road win over a ranked opponent

before that, google thinks their only other true road win over a ranked opponent was @ pitt in 2002

in a quarter century, they've done it twice
