^^i just finished it last night as well. Elko needs to stay away from profile camera angles, that belly is massive. And what was that 4XL cartoon looking pullover for the Texas game? The AD should say something.

Back to sumlin, if I recall, for his time at Arizona he was the highest paid coach in America because aggy didn’t have the clause every other team has where your buyout goes away when you get hired by another school?

I’m not sure that’s true, because if i remember correctly, Sumlins entire buyout was due in one lump sum 60 days after termination. I think that was 35 million.

The only easy for Elko to stay away from TV angles is to avoid being on TV.  There aren't good angles for someone that round

The Netflix episode on aggy was perfect.  One commentator called them Texas 8&4 and perennial underachievers, another said they love all these traditions but to everyone else they're just strange.  And then they have a short segment on the yell leaders.  I can just see the rest of the country watching this and thinking WTF.

I had forgotten how thoroughly we whipped their ass.  2 huge red zone turnovers, one of which was a pick 6 for their only score.  Really should have been a methodical 31-0 beat down.

The best part is the bulk of the game coverage on the show was pro-aggie and showed the 2 turn overs. Yet, aggie, and my dear boy Graham specifically, went on a rant about the BOMC now stemming to BONC. I'm sure Texas will be responsible for some upcoming liberal "woke" pro-Austin aka Longhorn productions on Apple and Amazon in the very near future.

Phil Steele was on with Plank on XM 84 earlier today. College Sports Saturday is the show and I generally enjoy both Steele's segments on various shows and Plank as a talking head except when he's talking about OU.

They were discussing ATM and Steele can't help himself. He's high on ATM largely because Elko is calling plays on defense, Marcel Reed and "they're returning so many starts across their OLine". You can tell that Steele gets taken in by the coaches who will actually talk to him and not just send an assistant for the phone call. Elko knows how to handle these guys and he's sold Steele on his team.

I come back to, is anyone actually watching the games? Steele's job is to know these teams inside and out. Does he watch any film? I'm hoping not in this case, because if he is and he thinks that returning Reed and that OL with Klein as the OC is a big plus for them, he doesn't know what in the fuck he is talking about with regard to gameplay.

In all of the ATM discussion I've heard and read from elsewhere since last season, I have not experienced one moment in listening/reading in which anyone has discussed either the net negative talent flow with the portal for ATM or their futility on the road.

No one has pointed out that they appear to have a systemic problem with playing on the road. This goes back as far as the eye can wander on a season by season basis. They had a .500 road record last season by beating juggernauts pre-Lagway Florida and 0-8-in-the-conference Mississippi State. They had their pants pulled down in public with South Carolina shouting "Yo! Check us out!" behind them as the CFB nation stared in amusement. They shit the bed against Auburn. They went 0-4 in 2023, 0-4 in 2022, and (2-2 if you count Colorado, as the game was in Denver and ATM won 10-7 against that piss poor team) 1-2 in 2021. They went 4-1 in 2020, getting blown out by Bama and beating 4 teams with a combined record that season of 15-26.

I don't even know the last time they had a winning record during a non-corona season on the road because I got tired of looking. I'm sure they had one in 2012 simply due to the overall record being 11-2. They haven't had one from 2015 forward and that's while playing a usually terrible SCar on the road every other season. 9 of the last 10 seasons has produced .500 or worse, usually worse, and the 1 winning season was a national anomaly.

This year they play @Notre Dame, @ Texas, @ Arkansas, @ Missouri, and @ LSU . Now, maybe they pull a few of those out, say Arkansas and Missouri (I am taking Missouri, but work with me here). If they win all home games as well, that's 9-3 and staring down the barrel of a good bowl game, that they will inevitably choke. 9-4 ceiling. I don't see how you look at that program for this season and tell anyone with a straight face that they're going 3-2 or better on the road. The assumption that they'll also go undefeated at home is doing a lot of work as well.

Preseason hype for A&M is always a living example of base rate neglect.

Ignore everything you know and all rational thought because this year is different because of one marginal change!

Here's an article from Tarp today. As I read his stuff frequently, I find myself starting to wonder if the guy isn't some sort of extremely subtle, masterful performance artist. Is this article satire? Is he quietly mocking Reed? Klein? His readers? Or is he just really this much of a redass that he's posting hopium regarding Reed's potential development as a downfield thrower? It's fantastic either way.

Highlights:

-Reed absolutely sucked throwing past 15 yards last season.

-His sucking was due, in Tarp's view, to his scrambling and not setting his feet.

-Tarp thinks Reed needs to take a heaving dump on his core asset - his mobility - in order to throw better downfield. If they don't do that, they're not going to win as many as they'd like.

-Tarp goes on to ignore the potential issue that they may only have one downfield threat on the WR corps in Craver, who weighs 165 pounds soaking wet and had injury issues last year at Miss State.

-Despite recent evidence to the contrary, plus last season and the spring, Tarp is confident that Reed will turn a corner throwing deep this season.

A quick look at Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed and the long ball

Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed is firmly established as the Aggies' signal caller of the present due to a combination of traits…he's athletic, smart, and dedicated. He is more experienced which has given him a better command of the offense and passing scheme and his legs should enable him to make the type of off schedule plays that can swing games A&M's way. The program even went out and got more toys at receiver in the off season that should make him even more effective.

However, if Reed and the offense are going to have the type of year that everyone believes that they will, then he is going to have to get better throws beyond the first down marker. It's not that he doesn't want to pull the trigger on such throws…he's simply got to have the footwork, delivery, protection, and threats to improve significantly in that area.

Pro Football Focus' numbers reveal just how far Reed has to go as his completion rate beyond 20 yards, yards per attempt, average depth of target, his percentage of big time throws, and his NFL passer rating were all in the bottom third of the Southeastern Conference quarterbacks. This came in spite of the fact that his average time to throw was in the top five in the league (his mobility came in handy in terms of buying him to make them) and he had zero drops from his receivers on these plays.

Reed has a high scramble rate (over 16% per ESPN) which is to be expected from a player with his youth and athleticism. Thus, his ability to get the ball down the field more accurately begins with him moving around less after the snap so that he has a better chance of setting his feet to deliver the ball.

Reed lacks a powerful frame that can propel the ball like many drop back quarterbacks who have his height but can outweigh him by as much as 50 pounds or so. For example, both Florida's DJ Lagway and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers both had around a 50% completion rate, averaged 15 to 20 yards per attempt, and a big time throw rate of over 28%. Their ability to produce highlight worthy plays was a big reason behind their teams' late season 2024 runs. For Reed, that means a premium on making his delivery more efficient to maximize his power and accuracy since his margin for error is probably less.

Reed can get the ball out quickly and change arm angles to make the most out of the shorter throws in the offense. He can also move the chains via those throws or his legs to extend drives. Even so, the Aggies ranked near the lower end of the SEC in pass plays over 20 yards in 2024. If you're going to shorten drives with chunk plays (which means less chance of having them derailed via mistakes), then Reed's ability to make the most of his downfield throws is the missing element in A&M's offense that can perhaps turn it into an elite weapon.

Well @closetojumping perhaps Tarp has found LDS and is of the position that Reed will find his long game in a magic hat.

As for Steele and over rating, he's not alone in the media and it just boggles my mind. This year aggie along with PSU and the other love fest media frequently for no good reason Miami are all the WTFs. At least PSU has a track record, granted its choking all big games where talent is equal or greater, but the same can't be said for Miami and certainly not aggie.

He said very similar things about OU. Their OL is very good, their WR is better than average, blah, blah Venables will coach a good defense. Mateer is a perfect fit, OU can go from 6-7 to the playoffs.

You ever follow something/read something long enough to where you become concerned that they might actually be correct and you've been wrong this whole time? Well, credit to Tarp, he's made me question myself on some level. Either he's just completely fucking delusional about the skill talent for ATM's offense or I am. "Either I'm off my nut, or he is ..."

Spoilered below is an article about what to expect from ATM's offense based one everything he's seen and heard since camp opened.

Highlights:

-Marcel Reed is going to be the closest thing to a triple option QB since John Blake was running shit at OU.

-They're loaded at WR, which will enable them to go downfield a ton. Ignore the article from this weekend about Reed being an incompetent downfield passer, or that in this same article Tarp talks inadvertently about shortening the field and focusing laterally, because those WRs are going to stretch this motherfucker!

-Starting WRs appear to be Concepcion, Craver, and Ashton Bethel-Roman. Bussey will be mostly a screen and jet sweep guy. There are some freshman WRs, not the 5 star, the other ones, who will also be in the two deep. Concepcion continues to be talked about as a deep threat. I am starting to think that none of these people have ever watched the guy play. He averaged less than 9 yard a catch last year and less than 12 as a freshman. Who is this guy a deep threat to, relatively speaking? The aggie secondary?

-The OL is discussed as a force, with Fatheree being back to his old self from 3 seasons ago. Moving the starting LT to Center, should it happen, is of no mind to be paid.

-EJ Smith is now moving really well. He's a fourth stringer who has never done shit at Stanford or ATM, but look out.

-He mentions the TEs because he apparently has to do so.

Remember that for the most part ones face ones, twos face twos, and so on. Backups who do well probably aren’t going up against the starters, but they are making their mark against their peers.

Players also get held out for different reasons (such as the coaching staff needs to see someone else or to preserve them) so if someone is missing there is probably nothing injury related behind it.

This is an offense that has enough talent to stress most defenses and perhaps get them into track meets to an extent (from a scoring standpoint). They’re going to push people around up front with their size and the backs run hard regardless of their size. Not only that, but the receiving corps is also more athletic and better equipped to make things happen after the catch.

Quarterback Marcel Reed’s strengths play to him being distributor out of RPOs with quick throws (slants, etc.) and ball handling out of jet sweeps and misdirection. He is going to get the ball to the right people and resemble more of a triple option quarterback from back in the day. A&M probably needs him to be more of that than anything else because they have the weapons around him that most past quarterbacks have lacked.

Freshman Brady Hart has been impressive at spinning the ball.

The backs are deep and while the freshmen have caught people’s attention it’s going to take injury issues for them to play with the game on the line. EJ Smith is moving better than in the past and can take advantage of what’s happening up front…and he may still be the fourth best option on this team.

They’ll preserve Le’Veon Moss as much as possible and they still like Rueben Owens a lot.

KC Conception is considered to be a difference maker because of his yards after catch ability. Mario Craver and Ashton Bethel-Roman probably round out the top three. The guys behind them can play but are probably more situational players that can be used to run certain routes or plays. Bethel-Roman can be a deep threat.

Kelshaun Johnson is joining TK Norman as another freshman who has caught people’s attention. Johnson is more of an after the catch guy while Norman is a before the catch receiver.

Theo Melin Ohrstrom will probably see the field most often at H back. Transfer Amari Niblack offers matchup problems as something akin to a big wideout but perhaps more as a situation player.

The offensive line is buoyed by the fact that former starting tackle Reuben Fatheree looks more like the player who started for two seasons. He allows them to do things like consider playing starting left tackle Trey Zuhn at center (although Mark Nabou is a starting caliber center). It’s probably the best unit in the program.

    Thanks.

Okay, here's the defensive version of the offensive write-up already posted. I can now confirm that Tarp is either one of the greatest gaslighters in sports writing history, or he's so far in the tank about this ATM team because he's a lifelong redass aggie that he's hopeless. I assume it is the latter. The article is unintentionally hilarious.

Highlights:

-He claims that the Edge spots are now more talented and deeper than last year. Understand, last year saw Shemar Stewart and Nick Scourton starting there for them. In the words of the Virgin Mary, "come again?" He goes on to claim that it is so deep, a true freshman might not get any snaps! Dayon Hayes, a mediocrity at prior stops, is apparently killing it for The Elk.

-He admits that the offense is ahead of the defense thus far, largely due to the offense being awesome. It's almost never a good thing to have an offense ahead of a defense early in camp. This isn't a Lane Kiffin or Sarkisian offensive complexity they're dealing with on the campus in BCS, either.

-While the defense is absolutely and admittedly going to be smaller than last year, The Elk is suddenly really valuing speed and agility over size, even with the front 3/4. There are two ironies to this guy taking that position. The first is that these dimwits have been tweeking out about the SEC being a "Line of Scrimmage League" for over a decade. It's been hammered to us from the media while Texas was entering the SEC with clowns all over attempting to knock Texas "not ready for our LOS league here, fellas." Right. The second irony is that he claims they're upgrading defensive speed while also admitting that Taurean York and their entire secondary are returning. Sweet Christ. It's delicious.

-Julian Humphrey, who was projected by all to take over for Dezz Ricks opposite Will Lee, is now running behind Ricks at CB. Ricks was a savior that folks pointed to last winter and then he continued to suck when he got to campus. They go out and pick up Humphrey and do the same shit with him, and get credit for it! Now Ricks is "someone to look out for at Corner" again. I think I follow him here. What he means is that Ricks is going to be hollering "look out!" to the Safeties throughout each game.

-HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

Remember that for the most part ones face ones, twos face twos, and so on. Backups who do well probably aren’t going up against the starters, but they are making their mark against their peers.

Normally, the defense is ahead of the offense but that’s probably not the case this year. They’ve had their moments but the increase of athleticism at the wideout spots and the veteran offensive line and backfield makes the offense more versatile and explosive.

The defensive tackle spot remains everyone’s biggest question mark. The best bets to be with the ones at this point are Albert Regis and DJ Hicks. The freshmen like Landon Rink continue to do well versus their peers on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

The ends have a lot of guys that can flash. However, it is not a big group and it’s been facing a big, physical offensive line. I want to remind you that when there are winners in scrimmages and practices, the losers are your teammates. Somebody has to come out second best. The Aggies have ability here and they’re considered to be faster and deeper than last year. A talented guy like freshman Marco Jones is going to find playing time hard to come by with someone like Dayon Hayes who has three years of experience on him.

Overall, the losses on the surface of Nic Scourton, Shemar Stewart, and Shemar Turner to the National Football League are problematic. A&M isn’t quite as big, especially on the outside, and they may not be as active on the interior in terms of making plays in the backfield. However, this is a program that believes in speed and the ability to run to the football at all positions, not just the skill guys on offense or the back seven on defense. You’re also probably going to see someone rolled up the box more often from the back end of the defense regardless of whether it’s by design or the coverage (reading a block from a tight end or wideout sending someone downhill in quarters coverage). This also means more man coverage on the back end as well from the corners.

The backers are probably closer to being a foursome now as a rotation with second year player Jordan Lockhart as a backup Mike. A&M was reportedly looking for a transfer at the position back in the spring but the fact that they didn’t get one has become less of a concern. Daymion Sanford continues to be a quality guy in coverage.

The secondary will probably be better simply because Tyreek Chappell is back to play the nickel. As of today, Dezz Ricks is probably someone to look out for at the corner opposite Will Lee. The safeties will probably continue to comprise the same rotation that they did last season with Dalton Brooke, Marcus Ratcliffe, and Bryce Anderson.

The key to A&M’s season will be their ability to stop inside run and get up field in the pass rush. If they can do this well enough, then they’re probably a ten win team. Struggle to do either or both and too many games that should be winnable on the surface become 50/50 contests subject to that week’s matchup.

This would be a really depressing read if I were an A&M fan

Well, credit to Tarp, he's made me question myself on some level. Either he's just completely fucking delusional about the skill talent for ATM's offense or I am. "Either I'm off my nut, or he is ..."

CTJ may need to stop reading aggy...

Hang around aggy stuff too much... yah gonna get aggy fleas

Everyone who smelled the initial Jimbo contract should’ve been fired, and everyone who was within a 5 mile radius of the approval of the extension should’ve been strapped to a Space X rocket and jettisoned to mars. But it’s TAMU so they doubled down with the Elko contract.

The problem is that they allow their emotions to make their decisions for them. They begin the rollercoaster hill climb before looking to see if there are even tracks on the other side of the hill.

They would be wise to hire outside attorneys to review their processes, but if they did that, they wouldn’t be Aggies.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Whoop.

They'd be smart to put together a totally neutral hiring committee and contract committee, because as it stands, they let TexAgs and Looch make the decisions for them.

Running an offense that resembles the triple option with a skinny qb is a great idea.  Collin Klein is an offensive wunderkind.  Or Reed is going to get obliterated running the football and we get to find out who the next great atm qb is by the middle of the season.

O'Neill is the probably the guy who is most suited to run that offense, just on size - 6'5, 220.

Klein was 6'5, 226 in his playing days.  Howard was a similar 6'5, 240 when he was running that Klein offense at KSU.

So this 6'1, barely 180 pound QB is going to be a master of the "pound the QB into the opposing defense line over and over all game?" Even 6'3, 230 pound David Ash got turned into a vegetable running a similar offense to the Klein offense.

    Thanks.

Not a single mention of Bussey?? 😂

They need a qb built like Ellinger or Tebow for what Klein wants to do.  The problem is that being a human battering ram is not appealing to most qb recruits.

Looch would just invite the weakest committee member to meet him out in the TexAgs parking lot.
