It happens several times a year.

Here's a famous one from way back:
Lester Holmes, Guard for the Philadelphia Eagles with his arm in a plaster cast during the National Football Conference East game against the...

Here's some more:

Kevin Mawae's career epitomized by that time he turned southpaw - ABC7 New York

The Jordan Shipley erasure will not stand. Unless and until Jaggerson has a back breaking play to beat OU in the Cotton Bowl

Tony Hills had some interesting insight into this yesterday on OTF. Basically it's Goosby's left hand which him being on the left side of the line isn't as critical because of other techniques you can use on outside rush and your punch hand is better for inside rush(right arm). He said the bullrush is where their may be issues for Goosby and it all depends on how they tape or brace his fingers/hand.

I didn’t think you were crazy until I read the same thing below the quote as I did above it. Now I’m sure of it

I think an Erasure cover band with Jordan Shipley would be impressive, more so if it featured Parker Livingston on lead vocals.

I'm sorry, but Jaggy McJaggerson is not going to be a priority this weekend. Run inside, run outside, jet sweeps, hit Wingo, Moore and Endries, win by 11 and leave town. They're going to play 21 and 12 personnel as much or more than 11. Who are you taking off of the field in order to keep McJaggerson out there? A better blocking TE? One of the talented RBs? "Don't throw it to that guy!"

What’s the penalty for your big cast getting stuck in someone’s jersey?

In all seriousness, from the updates it sounds like Moore and Wingo are the focus at WR. To me that suggests that the staff would rather have an extra RB or TE on the field than a third WR (presumably White Chocolate).

But that doesn't mean he won't see the field. Imagine that we're up by less than a score late in the 3rd quarter. Out trots Jaggy and lines up in the X. The DB looks at this goofy ass white kid and thinks "well this is a run play." The ball is snapped, Jaggy does his goofy arm-flailing shit, and the DB takes his eyes off Livingstone for second. Next thing he knows, Parker motherfucking Livingstone is 10 yards behind him, on track to catch an absolute dot from Manning in the end zone.

You don't start a chess match by moving your queen in front. You start with the pawns. You save your best pieces for checkmate.

If Parker Livingstone is one of our "best pieces", light the cigarettes now, boys, because we are well and truly fucked.

Apparently, the way that they are going to tape or brace his fingers/hand involves a cast.

I'll go you one better: What if, in this scenario, Jordan Shipley and Parker Livingston were roommates?  That'd be something to talk about.

Thursday - Columbus O-H-I-O

Good morning from Columbus, Ohio!

**

As I wrote yesterday afternoon, offensive guard Connor Stroh has had a terrific fall camp. He may have even pushed ahead of Neto Umeozulu at left guard as starter.

Stroh only moved to left guard three weeks ago. He had been apprenticing behind DJ Campbell on the right side with Nate Kibble backing up Neto on the left.

But the coaches flip-flopped Kibble and Stroh, and Stroh has apparently taken full advantage of the opportunity on the left side.

At first, it was thought the move was made because of the injury to Andre Cojoe at right tackle. Texas wanted to develop depth at left tackle and tried Neto there some while moving Nick Brooks to right tackle to give Brandon Baker ample competition. That slight opening gave Stroh a chance to shine as a starter and make the left guard position a very real competition.

Flash forward to game week and it appears Stroh could be the starter against the Buckeyes, or will at the very least be in the rotation.

**

I mentioned yesterday that transfer quarterback Matthew Caldwell is getting the reps with the 2s.

KJ Lacey is now getting reps with the 3s. The true freshman continues to be a real bright spot, especially in 11v11 work.

**

When I visit another college town, I always try to go out early, see the stadium, drive thru campus and then have breakfast at a local institution. I also try to get a little keepsake just in case it’s a Longhorn victory to remember.

I did all of those things this morning.

Here are some pics!

They're still running a 4-2-5 since Patricia is the only change on the defensive staff. Patricia will probably bring certain blitz packages from his background. What will change most will be the defensive playcalling and in-game adjustments. It's easy money to bet that Patricia will be a significant downgrade from Knowles in that respect.

It's almost like Ryan Day wants to prove that he's the key to OSU's success, and that he can run the table without Knowles and Chip Kelly.  Why else go back to calling plays from the sideline and bringing in an NFL guy to run someone else's defense.  This either works or it doesn't, but to me it looks like a risky short-term strategy.  Day is trying ride the momentum he's had in recruiting rather than take a step back and replace both coordinators with more permanent options.  It worked for Nick Saban more often than not, but I don't know that I've ever seen it work for anyone else.

I feel like the OL debate has been fully debated. We will have some aggravating false starts and holding calls but whoever can be the least “shook” will have a big advantage. Something I haven’t heard talked about much is our WR’s v. their dbs. I remember hearing that Sanchez was having a great camp and I would love if Wingo beat him on a deep ball. I know surly hopes Parker has a big game. Outside of him, who are people thinking could have a breakout game against their secondary? I’m hoping Lockett makes a play or two but thinking he will play more of a role later in the year. I know Endries has put up stats but hasn’t for us..yet. Yes, they have Downs and a solid LB group so they have a few ways to limit him but I think he has a great chance to have an early impact on the game, opening up the outside routes. My vote goes to him with Lockett 2nd but curious who people think will go from potential to production this game.

Yesterday I was trying to figure out if I'd missed something about Stroh - whether there was genuine reasons for optimism or if Stroh had just moved up by dint of better players being injured. Based on everything I had seen, I assumed the latter.

This update is welcome news though. It sounds like we hadn't heard much about Stroh because he had not gotten his shot. With Cojoe down, the coaches gave him some run and Stroh capitalized. If he's improved his feet then he may be a huge asset on the OL.

just got a last minute invite so headed up there tomorrow heading back right after the game.  We have never been to Columbus.

i'm sure it's been discussed but I don't have time to comb through the thread --

i'm sure all of the restaurants will be slammed but it'll only be two of us for dinner tomorrow night and we don't mind sitting at the bar / waiting for a table.

Questions -- (1) what are the best steakhouses in Columbus (I see Jeff Ruby's and Butcher & Rose that both look ok); (2) what about other good places to eat; (3) are any of the steakhouses / good places to eat in an area that would be fun to walk around?; (4) is there a fun place to walk around and pop in for a drink/beer where our old asses won't get assaulted?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sadly, with Mike Leach's passing the lead lyrical writing genius will prevent it from ever getting a huge hit.

In good news, they could dedicate one song to specific Surly posters and a former Longhorn QB.

The odds of Stroh being legitimately good seem pretty slim. Dude just rolled out of bed one day in year 3 and started kicking maximum ass? Uh huh. Clearly, injuries along the OL have forced Flood into some uncomfortable maneuvering.

Theres absolutely no chance any DB is overlooking a WR at Texas because hes white. Its the most desirable position in the country with what Sark has done with X and Golden.

I would take Arch off to do some direct snaps to Livingstone.

Just going to state the obvious on Stroh. He could not see his toes when he came to the 40. Believe he has lost 25- 30 pounds since he arrived and is still a very large human being. This is just a guy that transformed his body and is probably moving better as a result. He is probably looking better than his HS film, but hard to know where that puts him today.
