Gambling is like any vice. Make it illegal and it just goes underground to be managed by criminal elements. I don't like it either, I seriously do not understand the mentality of doing something in which you are all but guaranteed to lose money, but its a thing and might as well be legal. I also support legalized marijuana even though I hate that half the people at the grocery store reek of weed.

I'm not anti-gambling but it's not a good idea that we all have casinos and sports books in our phones and the TV channels spend as much time on lines and odds as they do other sports stories.

I don't have much to add other than I do have a too much of a vice of enjoying blowing a few hundred at a casino every couple of months, but betting on sports through my phone is so unrewarding. I never wager much so I can get the extra odds boosts which usually cap at a $5 or $10 bet and even when I win it does very little for me. I know the answer is it's simple addiction, but it bottles my mind that guys bet thousands of dollars on sports parlays that are absolutely agonizing to watch.

I think we have an overwhelming amount of evidence now that far fewer people will go to find a bookie if sports betting is illegal as opposed to sitting on their ass and betting all day quite easily through their phone.

I don’t have a problem with it being legal, but the fact that sports networks and leagues have so embraced it is disconcerting to me. Maybe I’m naive, but seems like there should be some sort of regulation there. Probably for another thread though.

I hear that if you actually are a good bettor and win these gambling apps will limit your bets or actually ban you. Is that true? Because then it really is just a heads I win, tails you lose proposition.

I am way too emotionally invested in sports to ever consider betting on it.

Yes. There is no law that prevents them from banning you or limiting your bets to small amounts if they identify that you're better than average gambler.

It's like how casinos can prevent you from playing blackjack if they identify that you're good at counting cards in blackjack. They can't have you arrested because you didn't break a law but they alter betting amounts, ban you from blackjack or even trespass you from the casino itself. They do accept that people win and can even win large amounts but they don't want someone who looks to naturally have an edge over them.

This. Raise the age limit, stop plastering the ads on TV and streaming every 5 minutes, etc.

Also, I find the fact that an extremely influential sports media company also has a vested interest in a gambling site to be a huge red flag.

It feels worse somehow. I think that at least in an individual casino you can just go to the guys across the street.

But fair enough. You are probably going to lose, but in the unlikely event you do win they will make sure you don't win for long.

This is what I’m talking about. There shouldn’t even be segments, let alone entire shows, about gambling odds and ways to place bets. In some sense, I guess it’s the same as beer commercials, but this just feels so much more sinister and pervasive.

From your perspective, I can see how its no different than "Me Undies," although I doubt Jomboy's partnership with whatever the hell that is, has resulted in an explosion in death threats towards professional athletes

It is more sinister. Because beer commercials don't result in thousands of death threats towards players spouses and children.

Brother?

Black jack or craps for me. Outside of taking $100 off an obnoxious, drunk loudmouth sooner during the Colt years I haven't placed a dime on any sporting event in 30+ years. I'll make the occasional gentleman's bet of a beer or beverage with a few close friends, but that's as much about the camaraderie & an excuse to "settle up" by getting together & catching up, something that happens far too infrequently. It never really matters who won the bet as the competition for the check is the real action.

I'm also part of the crowd that doesn't understand the appeal of sports gambling. I've placed bets at sports books and even won a few large parlays, but I've never experienced the appeal of sports gambling. I can play craps for hours, and sports? nah.

And now that you add to the obvious fact that players, coaches, and refs are aware of lines, and there are cases where they act on the lines, it's practically a fixed game now. Now the fix may be on your side. You can get lucky.

I don't agree much with Texas politicians, but I'm aligned with Dan Patrick that we don't need gambling here.

I'm of the opinion of live and let live. Wanna smoke crack? Cool, it's gonna cost a ton and we're gonna tax the shit out of it so we can pay for your inevitable rehab or funeral. same with gambling. but sports betting is a combo of both. you're making and distributing the drug - even advertising it on tv. there needs to be a much better disconnect between the folks playing the game and those betting on it. otherwise, do what you want, as long as you are only harming yourself (which isn't realistic, I know)

That's a good one.

If you don't drink and you don't like to gamble, when you chance into a casino (work events, restaurants, concerts/comedy) it's wild how disgusting the experience is. Sad sack people and loud, wild noises with the smell of a 2015 Kia from Avis that has been chainsmoked in for years but whose wet-dry vac did it's best to clean. It's actually very sad and it's the most depressing when you see people who objectively should NOT be gambling their prescription or car note or rent money doing so.

Anyways, free beer though.

I work with some of the casinos around here and have had morning meetings at the properties. The place is filled with old people just pressing buttons at 8:00 am and smoking like a freight train. I was in Shreveport a long time ago when I was broke and they still gave free drinks in the Casino as long as you were playing the slots. We just pressed the penny button every minute or so and got wasted. Fun times. They don't do that at Indian casinos in Oklahoma and I doubt anywhere else anymore

Yeah, my wife have become mildly "Vegas people" the past few years, driven entirely by going to see concerts and have nice meals and chill in a nice hotel together.

We tried gambling our first couple of trips. We can't even understand the "slot machines" that are out there. Seriously, no more "3 pairs of cherries, you win $10." Instead, it's a complicated screen, where a monkey runs in from one side, two presidential portraits come up, and a gunboat fires 3 salvos, maybe at the monkey. I end up just looking at the card reader to tell whether I won or lost. I might as well just hand money to a guy and ask him "did I win?", which he answers with "no" and keeps my money.

I like blackjack, but not enough to go to a $50 minimum table.

I DID have fun on one occasion. Was during CFB season, wife made a spa appointment. I went downstairs, sat at a bar, and played video poker. I could watch a couple of games, have some fun (was up $80 at one point), and got free beers handed to me. She came downstairs, sat next to me, and I said "I either leave with $100, or $0" (I'd started with $10). I left with $0, but didn't mind - it cost me $10 to sit and watch football and drink beer for a coupla hours. Not bad.

In any case....neither of us gets any charge/thrill out of it. Even when I win a nice hand of blackjack, it's cool, but there's no high I'm driven to chase. I understand that will real gamblers....that's not the case. It's all about chasing the high.

I'd rather just spend the money on a nice french dinner and then enjoy some sexy time with my wife. Costs WAY less, with a guaranteed payout.

Not gonna touch the MAGA stuff (although I’ve had similar thoughts with a number of my “favorites”), but this occurring during the middle of Portal Kombat really emphasized how shortsighted some of these transferring kids are being.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Jordan has made more money due to his connection with the Longhorn fanbase than he ever did in the NFL. The last 48 hours has shown ann entire fanbase and city rally around someone who hasn’t worn a jersey in fifteen years.

I know some folks scoff at those of us who are lamenting the current state of the sport, but the real emotional connections that we all have with our alma mater genuinely do open up opportunities for players that are usually reserved only for HOFers in professional leagues. I think many of the players who view CFB as simply an opportunity to maximize earnings during their four years on campus are going to look back with regret at their indifference to the “soft” side of college athletics and the part that makes this sport feel like more than simply a minor league system.

Blackjack is rarely blackjack now. They've changed a small rules to create a large advantage for the House. Yes, they had an advantage before but its much, much worse today. From my understanding, you can only get older (better) rules when you start playing $100 blackjack in Vegas. While I enjoy reading and watching tales of the blackjack card counters take down casinos, they've ruined blackjack for the rest of us.

It should be criminal to call these new tables blackjack.

Crazy looking back on it, but my parents in the 70s/early 80s had no problem with me playing blackjack all day on Atari. Maybe that wasn't a good idea in hindsight.
