I want Sarkisian to work out and win titles at Texas and I think he can, which isn’t how I saw the hire on 1/2/21. That said, I feel like him failing ahead of 2028 is a reasonable hedge to my outlook, based on what I’ve seen this year. If you’re taking bets from anyone, I’ll take the counter to your position for $500.

Shoot....I didn't think of the old hedge play....bet for something you don't want to happen to garner a consolation prize in the event of disaster.  But I put it out there so sure  🤝

Sarkisian as a CEO has been close to elite. That cannot be said for his performance, ever, as an OC while also the HC. Sorry. You cannot find data and cite it to support a counter to the notion that the OC role is not a strength for Sarkisian while also head coaching.

As to the rest, a lot of you guys are chiming in about how this will be handled before the season outcome is even known. If Texas somehow goes 9-3, no one here has a fucking clue what will or won’t be done in public or private. 5-7 to 7-5, sure. Above that, we have no idea.

According to offensive FEI the highest ranked offense he has had as HC/playcaller is 14 with his first year at USC. On average his offenses are ranked around 29 offensive FEI.

His average offensive FEI at Texas including this year so far is 27.2

Good, but not great or elite.

There's no question that Sark has totally blown it with this offense while being elite as a CEO.

But I think the minute he gives up his OC duties, it's the beginning of the end. It's his total identity as an actual football coach. Replace staff, make whatever recruiting evaluation changes that are necessary, reconsider offensive philosophy, etc.

But you might as well just fire him if you want to take away his offensive responsibilities. IMO his heart won't be in it to run this team strictly as a CEO.

I would honestly settle for a new QB coach with a proven track record outside of "he recruited Arch Manning"

Sure, but OL is the main issue. Nothing is gonna flourish without getting that fixed.

Just look at how crazy the carousel is this year. This new NIL/portal landscape has turned everything on its head. The question I think the $$$ guys are going to ask is can Sark win the SEC with the current structure of the program? Something has to give because the offense is completely broken. So what is going to give? I dont think Sark will give up playcalling duties. Thats the whole tamale for him.

One thing is for sure, this is an extremely dangerous game for Sark. The UK game was on Sark. We won, no harm, no foul. If we lose to Miss St because Sark trots out another head scratcher of a game plan, his seat will officially be warm. We have a solid Vanderbilt coming to Austin, at Georgia, and two rivalry games left after that. If the wheels really come off, then Sark will go into next season with his back against the wall. I dont think its out of the question hes gone after or even during next season if he doesnt fix the offense.

Look at the aggy/AR game.  AR line would break down, and their QB would flush the pocket over and over.  Keeping Arch in the pocket behind this shittastic line is criminal in it's own right.   He also plays better when improvising.  He doesn't need to gain 10+yds every carry.  But 4-5 at a clip moves the chains and keeps the defense honest.

I keep thinking about what happens if the Oklahoma 2nd half team shows the rest of the year and the rest of the schedule looks so damn favorable. There's still too much upside left in the year to be bailed on this season.

As soon as the upside goes away I start to wonder how it impacts AD revenue going into next year. Once you lose the hardcore the casuals aren't far behind. Season ticket renewal in the event of a 2nd half implosion (lose out) would be insane.

They would just be transferring play calling duties to someone else. Sark would still provide significant input on offensive personnel decisions, recruiting, game planning, etc. He wouldn’t be that detached from the offense.

I don't agree with this at all. You could've said the same about Ryan Day 2-3 years ago and now he's the CEO and hiring OCs to call plays and that led him to break through the wall and he's got a great shot at winning back to back national titles while replacing like 70% of his offensive personnel from last year.

The same goes for Sark. He can hire an OC to still run his offensive system, but have that OC take a lot more of the burden of play calling and lower level tasks. Sark is a really good CEO and recruiter.  Being the OC is not his only value proposition as HC.  In fact, his offense has been the biggest impediment to UT winning a national title for three years in a row now.   He's much more valuable as a CEO and recruiter than an OC while being HC.

Is Sark even a good playcaller? Like, what exactly would we be missing if he hired an OC. This shit is unwatchable, and it wasn’t great last year with 11 future NFL guys on the field.

What we’re getting with Sark is the exact opposite of what most of us expected. CEO: Awesome. Defense: Awesome. Badass elite offenses: Crickets.

If I remember correctly Sark got more involved with the defense after the terrible first year they had. I imagine now that everything straightened out he’s not involved that much anymore. It does make you think if he was to hire an OC that runs an offense similar to his own, how valuable his expertise would be at identifying deficiencies from a CEO perspective.

Just checking in to see if we've got it all figured out - sounds like we do. Why won't the staff just listen to us?!? I'm still struggling with how far we've fallen on O - just so disheartening. Guess we got spoiled the last couple of years (even though O sucked at times) and I for one took it for granted, I guess. But who knows - keeping the faith that somehow everything starts clicking? Or it doesn't and I have to smoke even more weed to get through these games. Question - where are all of these "analysts" that were hired? What exactly are they doing? And does Sark even listen to them? None of us know, but kinda curious.

There were rumors that Day got much more involved in play calling after Michigan last year. You saw Day on the sidelines with the play sheets in his hands vs Texas and throughout the playoffs. I do not think hiring an OC will go the way people think. Sark will take back control at the hint of any issues. I think the biggest issue is Sark the HC/CEO is good. He has managed recruiting, boosters, and the defense expertly. Sark the HC has had the hard conversations with PK. He brought in Gary Patterson to help. He brought in Nansen, when he wanted to get more aggressive. PK listened and evolved his defense. In a perfect world HC Sark would have those same conversations with OC Sark. That is not happening because HC Sark cannot separate and look objectively at his dual roles as HC and OC. His identity is based on being a great play designer and play caller, I do not see him giving that up outside of disastrous results. I hope I am wrong.

Ryan Day was on the verge of getting fired last year after the Michigan loss. He stepped in, they had a great playoff run, and look like they have things figured out now. But that one example can't do all the heavy lifting. There are different variables and it's impossible to replicate.

OC duties were snatched from Jimbo and he was fired not long after.

If Sark wants to give up play calling, great. If it's forced on him at all, we're probably doomed.

I thought part of UK Dline plan was to keep Arch inside the pocket with the Ends/edges as the Dtackles collapsed it.  And it proved to be the correct strategy as Arch couldn't hit plays.  They knew Arch played better when escaping to throw.

It worked so well because Sark kept him in the pocket, trying to facilitate long-developing pass plays.  Then on designed runs, they seemed to be delayed draws up the middle and into the teeth of the Dline.

Week of Prep in Ahead of Mississippi State (Thursday): CJ Vogel

Week of Prep in Ahead of Mississippi State (Thursday)

The Week of Practice Ahead of Mississippi State Game

The Longhorns board for Starkville Friday afternoon for what is hoping to be a bounce back performance against Mississippi State.

Defensively, after seeing 89 snaps on the field in Lexington, the staff ensured a lighter workload at the beginning of the week. Texas practiced Monday, and did so without helmets. Basically a longer walk-through to try and save some energy on the legs while installing the game plan for the week.

Texas got back to work as the week progressed, but there is an obvious intent to play a more complementary style to protect the energy and snap count of the defense.

Look for Derek Williams Jr. to return to the starting lineup and for Xavier Filsaime to have roles at both safety and behind Graceson Littleton at STAR.

**

The return of CJ Baxter to the lineup is expected. He is listed as PROBABLE on the injury report and his addition is much needed.

While I don't expect Baxter to give Texas 100 yards of offense on the ground, he can definitely improve the pass protection aspect of the running back room and that should be welcomed.

**

I don't have any information on Aaron Butler's injury or reason for his absence from the lineup. Butler has not seen the field since Sam Houston State.

We will see what the offensive line brings this weekend. Communication has been emphasized each and every day. On Monday, we also heard Sarkisian mentioned the importance of Connor Robertson and Nick Brooks getting one more week of working together in practice.

I am unsure if that will truly pay dividends when the bullets start flying in Starkville, but hey, it is better than nothing.

**

On Michael Taaffe.

I mentioned originally after the surgery was announced that the injury was a reaggravation of a previous injury. It in fact was not. This is a separate, new injury that had no prior standing to anything Taaffe had experienced in the past.

Still, the targeted return date is Georgia – 23 days away.

Florida and OU used mostly stunts to attack the LG/C with 2 and 3 high looks behind.  Kentucky used more 2nd level/3rd level pressures to get to Arch. Teams will go back and forth between the 2 approaches. No matter the approach, defenses are going to hunt the Left A gap. Offense will need to stick to run the ball and rely on the quick game, like the OU game. The longest run vs Kentucky was an 8-yard run by Clark. He misread the play and if he hit the proper hole, he would have been 1 on 1 with the Safety for probable 40-50 yard TD. This OL and Qb cannot handle a defense that is teeing off on them, because Texas is 1 dimensional. Anyone thinking they can is delusional.

Is there no one on the staff or team who calls out Sark on his shitty OC'ing? Surely someone (hopefully multiple someones) after the Kentucky game has said "What the fuck was that?" BUT, for his tenure, we continue to suck inside the 10 so I guess that's a NO.

He can look amazing at times but then there are entire games where he's like a fucking idiot calling plays regardless of what is happening on the field.

2 years of looking like a mental midget at red zone with all that talent and experience was a big ass red flag.  Offensive gurus don't suck like that.

There are plenty of examples of guys who were valued for their work as OCs or DCs who eventually gave up the playcalling role as an HC. Saban, Drinkwitz and Mack Brown are easy examples to recall either due to proximity or recency. There are many examples of guys who refused to drop being a playcaller and it cost them their jobs. Will Muschamp and Billy Napier are easy examples for this board.

Now, name the guys who called plays and won national titles, real quick. Spurrier is one. Who else? Sir Edward Beauregard Orgeron, Esq., certainly didn't. Meyer? Nope. Smart? Nope. Swinney? Nope. Carroll? Stoops? Nope. I guess Jimbo Fisher, somewhat hilariously, is another.

Point is, you can find one about every dozen years or so who did it. The rest of the guys dating back to the early 90's were all very involved with their sides of the ball, but they recognized what needed to happen in order for them to truly win. There is a boneyard full of HC tenures in which the guy couldn't let go of his shiny object and cost himself, his program, his players, and the program's fans a shot at greatness. It's just selfishness. We've already pointed out that the results for Sarkisian are visibly short of elite and the trend is decidedly negative, and the sample size is not small. His case for continuing down this path is paper thin.

I don't disagree with any of this.

I think Sark made a devastating miscalculation offensively this offseason. After two semifinal appearances, tons of NFL draft picks, and # 1 recruiting class, it feels like Sark probably thought he had this program on cruise control. That he could replace 4 OL in-house and his offense would blossom with Arch at the helm. That the RB room was deep. That the NFL draft success confirmed their belief in their excellent evaluation & development process.

That was obviously a huge whiff. All the little red flags have blown up. I'm sure he understands that at this point, and we can only put on band-aids to fix things right now. What's done is done, this season is most likely a throw away. It fucking sucks. I hate it.

Since he has shown to been an excellent CEO & program leader, let's hope he makes the proper adjustments this offseason on his terms. That's all I'm saying. Whether that's staff changes, heavy portal pick-ups, change in personal responsibilities on game day, etc. If it's forced on him by CDC or other outside forces, I just can't imagine a happy ending.

Are we not seeing disastrous results right now? This fucking offense struggled to move the ball against piece of shit teams like Kentucky, UTEP, and Florida. This unit is single-handily holding this team back from winning a National Championship. Same as it did last year and in 2023.

I think it is too early for that kind of realization. I think an ugly year record would force Sark to rethink things. If they somehow win ugly this year, I am not sure Sark looks in the mirror. That is just my guess, but Sark could surprise either way.

The nattering nabobs have been grumbling about Sark for several years now.  But that could be dismissed as nitpicking and the usual stupid fanbase shit.

I'd have to think that regardless of W/L record, this year's fall from grace and grotesque offensive ineptitude would a) put CDC on Sark's ass and/or b) force some changes.

This MSU commentator/reporter thinks Texas wins 31-13, which kind of surprised me. Says that the MSU DL is their weak link defensively so Texas OL issues won't be exposed as much.

Personally, I don't feel great about this game at all. Think we will need an effort similar to OU game to win. Anything less and we're in trouble IMO.
