Looks good and the book mentioned the clown coming around every 30 years or whatever it was so a prequal series makes some sense.  Although the movie moved up the timeline so this would be a closer match to the book anyway.

Lots of crazy It shit happened.

Wow. That was a lot of fucked up shit.

Spoiler

I bet those child actors and their agents were disappointed they didn't make it out of the 1st season.

Didn't love it, but it's a pilot so I'll definitely give it a few more episodes, especially because of

Spoiler

The bait-and-switch at the end. I was kind of rolling my eyes at how they kept hitting the exact same notes as the book and movies, but then I realized why.

I'm not super interested in the military storyline, but ok. Let's see what happens. I'm much more interested in the Hanlon family story and I hope they go into what happens at the nightclub. I'll spoiler this next thing just in case, but it's something interesting I noticed in IMDB.

Spoiler

Dick Halloran is listed as a character - I think he was driving the Jeep when Hanlon and his friend first show up, but I don't think he has any lines in the first episode.

Spoiler

Are they all dead or did they get taken down to the sewers? I mean I know one is missing most of an arm…

I’ve been watching a lot of horror this month and that was right up there with what I’ve seen.

Spoiler

The Vulture review mentioned that the showrunners weren't allowed to release the main cast list, so I think they're actually gone. They'll probably pop up in the sewer or through someone's bathroom drain at some point, as one does.

I thought it was kinda mid. Hoping it turns out better than a mediocre IT remix which is what I was worried the bad version of this show could turn out to be.

The opening scene was YOLO shock gross out horror which is cool I guess, but it left me very confused. Didn't feel like part of the IT/King universe to me.

Good news is the show has a chance to reset after that extended epilogue. And fortunately no more child acting from Phil (the tall kid). Don't know how much more I could have stomached.

Watched ep 2. Pretty good but I can see this going of rails like some of the latter “American Horror Story” episodes did if they don’t settle in a little bit.

Curious how they are going to tie it all together.

Based on the trailer and credits, yes.

Just noticed ep. 2 is up.

Yeah they are 0-2 so far. Maybe Skarsgard costs too much.

Digging this and all the King easter eggs and call backs to other shit is pretty cool.  Who knew we'd see Dick Hallorann in something other than The Shining?

I am not a devoted King book fan but the calumet baking powder was an obvious nod to The Shining.  Are IT and the darkness that controlled the Overlook Hotel related in some way? I know that King has a universe and it's all related but is there confirmable relation?  Both forces seem to be able to alter reality to their advantage; Pennywise to create fear in his victims and Overlook to drive them mad and murderous.

The Calumet thing is not from the book, that's Kubrick.  So that's not "canon."

I believe King has multiple universes, other than our own, that leak into ours, sometimes benignly, sometimes malevolently, sometimes a bit of both.  The Overlook was some kind of portal into an evil universe.  Probably same with Derry and the sewers.  The same evil universe?  Not sure.

I must confess I've never seen any of the IT variations, or read the books. Watch or start elsewhere? Leaning towards watching anyways

you’ll wanna read the book first.  it’s basically a short story though so you can knock that out quick.  then I’d do the tv miniseries, then the movies, then the current show.

went to Amazon to look this up, and it reminded me that I bought this book in 2017. a reminder of how my reading has gone to shit over the years

Lol it's his second-longest book at around 1200 pages. And it's only second to the uncut version of The Stand, not the original version.

IIRC, Dick is mentioned briefly in the book when they discuss the Black Spot (the nightclub that burns down).

I'm still not a huge fan of this show but I'll give it another episode or so.

Spoiler

The military storyline is getting dumber and dumber. Are they actually leading up to the military thinking they can trap IT and harness it? And also, they think Hanlon is immune to fear, and they decide to test for that by seeing if he can beat up three guys they send in to attack him? And why the fuck would Masters confess to it if he didn't do it? The whole thing is so weird.

Not an expert/superfan, but I don't think the "Kingverse" goes very deep with the interconnectedness beyond characters or events being referenced or showing up. So we know the stories take place in a shared universe. King tends to take the "less history, more mystery" approach with origins, backstories, etc. I don't think whatever afflicts the Overlook is ever clearly explained. There's a cool scene in 11/22/63 that crosses over with IT for example.

There is some info about Pennywise's origin story in IT when the characters do the Native American ritual thing and see visions. There's a version of this scene in the films as well. Not explicitly connected to The Shining afaik. Will spoiler just in case.

IIRC he is an alien of sorts from an alternate universe or something. He traveled to Earth on a meteor millions of years ago and landed in Derry. There are also lots of references to a great/giant turtle in the book which is some benevolent godlike alien presence. The antithesis of IT.
