Nothing will matter unless we fix our atrocious OL. How do some of you watch the game and think if we put somone else at the QB position, we will play better?

Rod Babers would put a new QB in there.

What makes you think that about Caldwell? Two passes where Sark called basic one read quick action pass plays?

I'm not saying it's impossible for Caldwell to do well, but for people to act like we have some legitimate proof that he processes plays better than Arch is absurd. It's literally two plays.

I said it in another thread but I'm optimistic that if Sark knows what Caldwell does well and can put together a game plan with a small playbook he can hold up 1 week.  There isn't really any film on him.  But yeah, I don't have much faith at all he could hold up long term at all.  There isn't anything in his past that says this guy is ready to dice up complex coverage schemes and hit his 3rd read.  I fully expect to see ultra conservative play calls on 3rd and long (and for this board to be screaming about it not understanding it's intentional).  Someone posted a twitter video with all his passes/runs and think I recall one of his only throws into coverage in mop up duty would have been picked against a P4 secondary.

The fact that Caldwell has more experience and can process faster than Arch will give us the upper hand this weekend imo.  Is it really a surprise that the offense took off under Arch when he stopped thinking and started being decisive against Miss St?

This is where I'm at as well.

If Arch can't go, then I hope Caldwell's experience and ability to hit the short passes in rhythm gives us enough on offense to make up for the bad OL and RB play. Add to that the lack of film on Caldwell to limit Vandy's ability to prep.

But your comment about the game plan and small playbook is the crux of the thing. Will having Caldwell at QB be enough to get Sark off his bullshit and force him to call the plays we can actually run? For him to accept that these are college players with limitations and let them play within themselves? I really hope so.

We just need Caldwell to hit underneath routes, curls, and maybe a few slants. I doubt we will see much play action deep throws. If he’s consistent on the short to medium throws, then I think Texas can move the ball against Vanderbilt. Is establishing a run game too much to ask for this week?

And no turnovers. You can handle a turnover here and there from an explosive high ceiling QB, not from a game manager

Which is why I think, as long as the game is close, when we're in 3rd and 8+ you see screens, draws, etc. rather than trusting him to throw intermediate routes into coverage.

I will cop to being a little hyperbolic in an instant reaction, and ST is way better this year. I had a hard time going and finding ST stats and wasn’t about to spend time going through game logs and compiling.

The last few games have been great mostly because of Niblett punt returns. Niblett was not a consensus All American 4 weeks ago. This season overall we still commit too many penalties and take too many kicks out of the end zone and have made a lot of boneheaded plays. There is no shortage of people underwhelmed with Banks on this site. If that’s all good enough for 3rd in someefficiencybasedonwhateverindex or be best in the country then I guess everyone else’s ST suck too.

I’m not bitching about or trying to discredit the absolute fucking lifeline that Niblett has been, but ST has often been a major liability the past few years. Hopefully they keep it up, but Niblett’s not gonna get many returnable punts from here on out.

I realize you acknowledged some hyperbole, and I absolutely agree that special teams with Banks has often been detrimental, but wanted to show that Nibblets' punt returns are a special teams effort. I posted this in the Miss. St. game thread showing all the blocks which made his TD return possible.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Critical Blocks made on Nibblet's return for TD by #'s 0, 11, 23, 26 and 51.

#0 - Deandre Moore

#11 - Kade Phillips or Michael Terry?

#23 - Jorden Johnson-Rubell

#26 - Ty'Anthony Smith

#51 -  Marshall Landwehr - This block arguably prevented Miss St #56, the last viable defender, from making the tackle in addition to the direct block he made against defender #88 (I think) which  probably takes Nibblet out of bounds. Video at end linked to punt return.

Just not how Sark works. The Sark offense is typically a grab bag of plays that are intended to open up a shot play once or twice a quarter. Probably a big reason the OL does nothing well.

While your overall point about limited evidence is correct, the Florida throw was not a one-read quick action pass play. It was his second or third read in a standard drop back on 2nd and 22. He got the ball at 35 seconds left and the ball was out at 32 seconds left. This came directly after Arch on first and 10 got the ball with 55 seconds left and took a sack at 51 seconds left.

If they want a spy, just bring Derek Williams or Jelni Mcdonald into the box. You don't need a fucking Edge tk be your spy. Shit, even Littleton. They should be using Simmons to flush Pavia out of hos comfort zone towards to Hill/Lefau, or and if Pavia wants to run up the middle that's where you have Williams/Mcdonald. PK is driving me nuts this year. I love the guy, but experimenting should be done with. That's what SHSU, SJSU, and UTEP were for, not Ohio State and conference play.

I don't think you understand what the NFL is looking for. They aren't killing their draft stocks at all. They are demonstrating other skill sets that the NFL will value and showing they can be complete every down players. While I personally think we are a little too conservative at times on defenses, especially in teams that should be overmatched by our line, Simmons learning to drop into coverage isn't a bad thing for his NFL future.

I think I also saw you (or maybe it was someone else) complaining that Hill's stats are way down this year. I think people forget we played 16 games last year. He had 113 total tackles (59 solo) or 7 tackles per game (3.6 solo). This year he is averaging... 7.5 tackles per game (3.8 solo). He has lower sack numbers (but those tend to come in bunches), but has already matched his interception total (1) and nearly matched his FF total (4 last year, 3 this year) in 8 fewer games. Simmons is averaging .8 sacks per game vs .56 last year.  His total tackles per game is about the same as last year (3).

I should also add, I missed that #24 (Warren Roberson I believe) gets a brief block on the same defender as #26 (Ty'Anthony Smith), who picks up that defender after he disengages from Roberson. Both blocks prevented the  defender from getting to Nibblet, and nice to see Roberson didn't hold or block in the back, which hitherto, he's been notorious for.

Landwehr blocked like a stud.

Don't be an ass. Your argument was that we had no plays demonstrating that. You were wrong. Limited evidence is still some evidence. I think the reality is that the more experienced QB is going to be better at that part of the game. Arch has other attributes that he has demonstrated recently that will be very tough to match.

No, that was me who mentioned the stats, but I also said that Simmons could get to 10+ sacks by the end of the year, and I mentioned that his tackles were lower because he's being dropped Into coverage. As for Hill, yeah I forgot about the 16 games, so that's on me and I'll own it. I went back and I just looked at solo tackles rather than total tackles, and he's got the same amount. I got ahead of myself on that one. As for the sacks, that doesn't bother me much since we have some generational DE's  (for whatever reason, ESPN list Lance Jackson as a LB. Lol wut?). Anyway, Lefau is waaaaay higher in tackles at the same time this year, which tells me he's taken a massive next step, and he has a sack, which surprisingly he only had 2 last year, so I expect him to have at least 3 by seaaons ends.

You're also correct that him dropping into coverage can help his stock, and I was being selfish just wanting him to line up and go kill the QB, but what I have noticed is he's also being held a lot and it's not being called, and is really pissing me off. Am I going crazy or have to noticed the same?

This will probably look stupid in hindsight, but I'm starting to develop a gut feeling Texas is going to kick Vandy's teeth in. Something that looks like the aggy game last year. Doesn't get beyond a 10-17 point margin because of clunky offense but doesn't feel that close.

Well, sure, but the fact that he's come in and made quick decisions where you see Arch hold the ball just 1 tick too long.  Granted, he started to play with urgency at the end of Miss St.

I just think we need Caldwell to drive the bus and stay ahead of the chains in order to win this game.  I think if our LBs will cover the TE's then we can really win this going away.  Easier said than done.

Lol, I think we have different definitions for game manager because that feels very game manager to me.  You're correct that we have no idea how this plays out, but we are playing at home and just need him to show up for one game.  The fact that Vandy doesn't really have a lot of tape on Caldwell AND the fact that he took a deuce on Miss St.'s face on the road during OT to win the game is pretty impressive to me.

Would like to see if Mosley continues to step up after a couple of games back from injury. That game winning catch was one of the very few extra-effort catches our WR’s have made this year. Wingo would have watched it sail past him.

To each their own, but I really like him. He brings a lot of analysis backed by stats and Akina impressions are pretty hilarious. Since like week 3 Rod B had been tracking how successful we were out of trips and bunch and saying we should run more passing concepts out of it, and sure enough as I’m watching a disproportionate amount explosive plays come out of that.

Now he’s on “crisis mode” and has stated, with stats, going back to 1st half UGA SEC Champ, Texas has been more successful running out of the spread with 10 or 11 personnel with more straight drop backs.

Similarly less Wingo. He needs to stare at the field from the bench for a bit and get his head into the game, feel some pressure.

Moore Mosely and Niblett need to be on the field with Livingstone and Endires

The Wingo that had 184 yards receiving last game?

He's been infuriating for much of this year, but there is no other receiver on this team that can take a simple swing pass on the perimeter for 62 yards like he did last week. Our offense isn't good enough to take that off the field.

Seems to me re: Wingo/WRs that our top 4 do really have different skill sets.

Wingo does look to be the biggest game breaker with the ball in his hands

Moore with the surest hands. I’d like to see more Moore as his ability as a possession receiver/route runner is likely the best or tied for best on the team.

Mosley V is probably our most versatile as he seems to have good to great hands, good route runner, and has some wiggle in the short game.

Livingstone is close to our best at getting open in the intermediate and deep and he’s def got wheels.

A case could be made for out of 12 personnel not having Wingo out there all the time. It depends on what we’re trying to run.

It's fine so long as you admit your opinion is terrible. Wingo is the big play threat in this offense. Getting rid of our explosiveness, the only real trait we can rely on right now, is stupid. We should look to utilize him differently maybe. Take him off the field? Fuck no.

Ugh, fuck.. fine. I guess tag me in then.

  • Diego Pavia on his best day is heaving it 150 yards per game. That is only slightly farther than Brandon Baker heaves us backwards every game with penalties.
  • Diego Pavia is known as a field general and a leader. I guess you really do pick up some things in your early 30's. If he had a star for every year of eligibility he would be an 8 star general - Supreme leader of the galactic fleet and second only to gimpy the nacho vendor for longest tenured retard at Vanderbilt.
  • Diego Pavia bears a striking resemblance to that time I pressed my bulldogs face against my ex-girlfriend's windshield to see how much snot and drool I could get on there.
  • Diego Pavia once beat Joe Namath in a pushup contest when both were in their prime.
  • Diego Pavia is going to shit out his own helmet on Saturday after about the 14th TFL. It will be slightly less entertaining than watching him become the trainee of the month at Duncan Donuts in January.
  • Diego Pavia is both the before and after uncle Rico at the same time.
  • Diego Pavia regularly throws for more yards in warmups than in games.
  • Diego Pavia once fought a trashcan and lost.
  • Diego Pavia threw for... checks notes... 1,485 yards during his high school career. South Austin's mom has a body count bigger than that.
  • Diego Pavia has never ended a season above 60% completions, even at New Mexico Military Junior College.
  • Diego Pavia is making over $2 Million in NIL this season, that equates to almost $760 per passing yard for his career season average.
  • But VERTIGOOOO... HE IS A RUNNIN Quarterback!  Diego Pavia runs like the statues outside the coop.
  • Diego Pavia has only once rushed for more than 800 yards in his decades long college career.
  • Diego Pavia idolizes Johnny Manziel. Chances that Pavia exits Vanderbilt with any of his NIL money are zero point zero. But it's not all bad, at least him and Johnny can sit together when they try do autograph sessions at the local 7eleven.
  • Diego Pavia is the first college quarterback to get a Propecia NIL deal.
  • Diego Pavia is so stupid he failed the doctor's exam on hims.com
  • I hear they came out with a new grading system for Diego Pavia at Vanderbilt, it is called the Pavia Curve.
