“Miserable dickhead” is the easiest position to hold in a sports discussion.

If you are wrong and the team wins, you can say that you are “happy to be wrong.”   If they lose, you get to double down on misery and dickheadedness.

This position requires no conviction, no risk, and no heart.  It sucks the joy and love out of sports fandom.

But I get it.

Some people are just emotionally damaged and can’t allow themselves to invest a little hope into an outcome they don’t control.

Some people are just contrarians and derive some sense of self worth from standing apart from the main fanbase.

And some are just plain cowards.

Fuck all that
sports are one of the few places in life where you get to experience solidarity with a group of like-minded individuals about something that ultimately does not matter.

Save your fear, negativity, and cowardice for the things that DO matter and reclaim a little childlike joy by going all in for a sports team you love.

This is one of the few areas in life that doesn’t have to be miserable unless you choose to make it miserable.  So choose differently.

Also EVERYTHING fucking sucks right now.  So god forbid we find a little optimism and hope-ism in a football game, but the naysasyers and nabobs have to quickly try to ruin everyone else's hope so they can say they were right.  Internet cred, serious business

Y’all are building yourselves up to get let down. I think we lose this one by 14. Too many things have to go our way and we just haven’t looked like a team that can play a complete game
 particularly on the road.

Motherfucker you think this is our first time? It's expectations you fear? As a LONGHORN?

Oh gee I never thought that maybe we're just not that good and maybe there's a chance we won't win the national championship this year. Maybe if I just rearrange my expectations.

It will be hard to post from Sanford Stadium, but I'll be looking for you here after the game.

Doomers are the worst. Optimists come out ahead over time.

Friday - Bobby

Mostly recruiting info, but a little at the end for those going to Atlanta/Athens today.

If you went to bed early on Thursday night, you missed some recruiting fireworks.

Coming out of staff recruiting meetings held on Thursday, the Longhorns decided to offer three new high school recruits:

TE Charlie Jilek of Portage, Mich. (previously committed to Minnesota)

RB Jett Walker of Georgetown (committed to Minnesota)

OL Kaden Scherer (committed to Stanford)

Jilek committed to Texas last night. He, along with Walker and Scherer, are slated to visit the Longhorns on the weekend of the Arkansas game.

While the offers may look sudden, they actually are not. The Texas personnel staff has been evaluating players across the country for months.

Texas also recently offered Josiah Vilmael, a corner from Fort Bend Travis, who will also visit the Longhorns next Saturday.

As Texas closes out this class, it’s clear that the Horns are relying on their own evaluations over that of the recruiting industry star-ranking system.

It’s also evident that this recruiting class could easily push into the mid-to-high 20s in total.

**

Are these new offers a sign of possible heavy attrition this off-season from the existing roster?

Possibly. But not necessarily. These offers fill existing needs within the recruiting class.

The Texas recruiting class did not have a tight end commitment until Jilek pledged last night.

The RB unit has been hit by attrition during the season. Jerrick Gibson has elected to transfer and Ricky Stewart is no longer with the team.

And the OL was long on the lookout for an additional 1 or 2 signees.

**

Take a look at Jilek’s video. There’s a lot to like.

He’s an all-state performer in football and an all-conference player in basketball. At 6-5, 230 pounds, he’s a sneaky good prospect.

I’m in Athens this morning. Headed to the campus and the football stadium this morning to walk around.

As a reminder, I’ll be at Botica in Buckhead this afternoon with the Atlanta Texas Exes who are hosting a happy hour for all Longhorns coming to the game.

Please come out and join us if you’re available.

Hook’Em!

I don't think he has been for most of/all of the actual season. Still haven't seen or heard why.

That's a shame. I saw he was one of the few freshmen to not have played so far. I thought he had a lot of potential.

I think you’re giving him too much credit, and must not be familiar with his posting history.

It’s a pretty ironic contrarian stance for him to take since he has had his bleeding vagina on display shitting all over the team and spewing doom and gloom for weeks on this board.

@Bozo_Casanova's post may be in jest, but like @Darth Tron i had a dream about this game last night too.  we broke off a couple of long runs.  CJ Baxter had a 60 yard rush deep into GA territory that we ended up fucking up and coming away with 0 points.  BUT, we were up 17-0 in the second half when I woke up.

The only way Baxter is cranking off a 60 yard run is if half of GA's defense spontaneously stroke out at the snap of the ball. Even then I don't think it's very likely.

Is this because of uga or is it a logistical/health issue? If the former, that's some bs.

This game has been written off as a loss by everyone nationally, and even by a lot of our own. Are the odds stacked against us? Sure. Have we played well on the road? Nope. But here's the thing-- the first matchup last season was played the week following ou, and being ranked number 1 for the first time in what seemed like forever. The next match-up could've been won with just an added competent kicker. All of you thinking we're just flat out about to get our asses kicked tomorrow need to nut the fuck up. Yes, we very well may lose, but we do have a shot at a W.

We still don't have a competent kicker.

I just hope  Kade Phillips and not Gilbeaux is who starts opposite of Manny tomorrow at the other corner

You want to start two true freshmen in the secondary?  Taaffe and McDonald will be back.  I think Guilbeau will be fine.

I’ve been thinking the same. He may change the formation a little, but he’s gonna show the same set up and try to throw deep. It will be picked off because Georgia will have 3 guys back there. It won’t fool anyone but the announcers and a couple of UGA fans.

Naw, he's doing the fake pass to Wingo to the right side perimeter and throw back to the RB or TE on the left side for a screen.

He hasn't been fine all season. I think you go with the freshman, let him take his lumps. We'll be better for it going forward.

Texas (7-2, 4-1)

The good news for the Longhorns? They're very much in the SEC Championship Game and playoff discussion despite two losses up to this point. The reason being two of their final three games are against top-5 opponents.

  • If the Longhorns beat Georgia, Arkansas and Texas A&M, they're in the SEC Championship Game if Oklahoma wins out and Ole Miss loses one of its two remaining games to Florida or Mississippi State. That would leave Texas, Alabama and Texas A&M as the three 7-1 teams with the Longhorns and Crimson Tide getting the nod.

  • If the Longhorns beat Georgia, Arkansas and Texas A&M, they're in the SEC Championship Game if Oklahoma wins out and Auburn beats Alabama. That would leave Texas A&M and Texas as the only two 7-1 teams in league play.

  • If the Longhorns beat Georgia, Arkansas and Texas A&M, they're in the SEC Championship Game if Oklahoma beats Missouri and LSU and Ole Miss loses one of its two remaining games.

  • If the Longhorns lose to Georgia, they're out of the SEC Championship Game mix.

  • If the Longhorns lose to Georgia, then beat Arkansas and Texas A&M, they're likely in the playoff at 9-3 overall as the last at-large selection given the late-season boost with the win over the Aggies.

  • If the Longhorns beat Georgia and Arkansas and lose to Texas A&M, there's going to be a logjam of teams in the at-large conversation.

There has only been one kick he “choked”, but we still ended up winning that game (MSST). He also literally won us a game with his kick (Kentucky).
After the Bert years, I’m not complaining.

lol some people on this board are so far the other way that if you don't predict that we win every game by 50 it makes you a 'miserable dickhead'

I've been pretty critical of Guilbeau, but watching some of the all-22 I'm now starting to see that the problem is bigger than him. Derek Williams cannot QB the secondary like Taaffe and he seems to have lost some of his situational awareness. Manny is awesome, but he also seems to thrive on an island. Littleton is a true freshman and is doing great with that context in mind, but he can't lead the DBs. I think Guilbeau is the veteran DB most likely to be tapped as leader when Taaffe and McDonald are out, and he is not fit for that job. He both tries to do too much and also doesn't do enough. Filsaime is kind of in the same boat when he's in.

But Guilbeau is not as big of a liability as he seems. With Taaffe back to run the secondary, I think we see improved play across the board. If he still sucks, then I think you have to pivot to someone like Phillips and hope for the best.
