Yeah, they should definitely piss off one of the greatest players to pass through the UH program in a long time. That won't have any long-term ramnifications.

It doesn't even matter if they are prepared for the ramifications, you don't get your money back.  That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.  It's one of the more retarded facets of fan's opinions.

If the point of football is strictly, or primarily, to maximize your earnings potential, then he's doing the right thing by sitting out his semi-pro team's games at this point.

Most fans don't look at it that way. It will be worth watching what happens to fan interest if players continue to take a primarily economic view of the game.

We're already seeing what is happening to fan interest.  Stadium attendance is in decline.  It's not solely the players, the schools themselves are largely responsible for the over-commercialization of the sport.  Regardless, though, fan interest is declining, attendance is declining, and the schools are not creating new fans so the base is eroding.

The sport is definitely regressing.  In two decades it won't look much like it does now.  Might happen quicker.

Neither Major nor Oliver covered himself in glory. Coaches need to anticipate how they are going to handle selfishness including guys checking out early before the draft. They should be preaching subtly about the issue all year so that if/when the issue arises, the rest of the team sees it through the correct lens. They should have conversations with players at risk to leave after 3 all along their stay so that the expectations of both parties are compatible. If Ed knew exactly what would happen and why for circumstance X, he would much less likely have gotten into this situation. Major was right to enforce rules but would have been better served both to head the issue off starting when he takes over as HC and to keep his dirty laundry in the locker room or his office. Let a guy (who is leaving and may help you) save face while letting the team know unequivocally behind closed doors how things are going to be the future. Strategery is hard.

Ok but how do you know that didn't happen and Oliver isn't just being a bitch?

I'd have no problem with him taking the Bosa route and not returning to team. But to be a distraction is hurting the team, not helping it.

If he's worried about his earning potential, refusing an assistants request to take of the jacket and then going after your head coach is probably not something you should do.

He's cleared to play, if he doesn't want to play, that's on him.

Can't let the inmates run the asylum. Major is the head coach, and Oliver is a player on scholarship who isn't holding up his end of the bargain.

Major did this in the open so scouts could see, and they did. They may not care, but its out there, and one more point to debate when deciding whether to draft him or not.

Oliver gives up on his college team what's to say he doesn't do the same thing somewhere down the line with his pro team?

That would definitely not be the answer but Ed Oliver is going to have little impact on the Houston  program long term.

Major could have handled it better (not in public), but he was 100% in the right.  Oliver is a jackass who has quit on his team.  UH should send him a bill for his fall tuition, fees, etc.

oliver is a jackass, but i think UH has made much more money from oliver than he has "made" from UH.

hopefully more and more of these highly rated "draft injured" guys turn out to be high priced bust in the NFL and it pushes the NFL to create an alternative league (or maybe big balla brand will copy their successful basketball league in football)

I doubt that will happen because the NFL has plenty of high priced bust that they deal with every year even when they play a full season and bowl games, but one can wish......overall the sooner the NFL creates a league to get the athlete "students" out of college and not wasting time and space in college the better off the college game will be

also I have said in other threads that Major needs to GTFO of Houston ASAP their fans and their idiotic administration are not behind him at all and I think this incident reflects that somewhat....Major is just not popular there, they have basically already put his job on the line every season for fewer than 9 wins and they have to rally around a single player because other than that they have pretty much "meh" to sell and it shows in the empty stands

if Major was smart he would take a job at even at Texas State or UTSA if they open up much less ANYWHERE ELSE besides UH and he can let UH get back to sucking like they did for most of the last few decades in CUSA and before briles showed up

Well, so far Christian McCaffrey is doing well in the league. Fournette is a stud when he's healthy.

The sample size keeps increasing, so this should be easy to track.

are you misrepresenting what I'm saying intentionally, to try to be funny, or did you really not understand the point I was making there?

I understood what you're saying, but utee94 had already made the substantive reply -- anyone who's *NOW* going to be turned off college football because players are starting to make economic decisions about their careers has had their heads way up their asses.

P5 college football is a dirty-ass industry and has been that way for a long time, and it's getting worse.

Anyone willing to put up with Urban Meyer's shenanigans, Bobby Petrino quitting on his job but collecting $14M, Baylor, Penn State, North Carolina, $100+ tickets, etc etc etc, should be able to stomach a few players sitting out meaningless bowl games for their own good.

Horseshit. They are both adults. If Oliver can make million dollar decisions about his future he can carry himself with more poise than that.

Or... maybe he can't. For sure a red flag for teams looking at him.

That is the way you think it should be, not necessarily the way that it actually will be.

I don't think anyone likes the constant commercialization of the sport or the scumbag behavior of some of those that work in it, but the players sitting games out says "these games aren't important" in ways that coaches' salaries, conference realignment, ticket prices, Adzillatron, and win-at-all-costs cheating do not. Fans are willing to put up with an awful lot as long as they are invested in the games. If the fans begin to think that the games don't really matter, THAT is what will harm fan interest in the sport in my opinion.

You do realize quite a bit of that money goes back to the players in the form of scholarships, free access to world class training and nutritional facilities, free gear, that shiny new locker room Texas just built. Is the university making more off them than they are making off the University? Yeah, that is the way every business is run, but I laugh when people say these guys play for free. Really shows a difference where guys heads are at, guys like Jamarquis Durst get emotional and appreciates a scholarship and bust their ass for the team. Guys like Ed Oliver couldn't give a shit and quit on the team. World we live in. Just let these guys leave to the NFL after high school, problem solved, we'll see how that works out for them.

They should all be held accountable, shouldn't have to pick a side.

This is one of the dumbest things I have read. Major should leave UH, who is in the best G5 conference in one of the most fertile recruiting areas of the country for UTSA or Texas State in Conference USA. Give me a fucking break. UH has been the second best program in Texas behind TCU this decade. Why shouldn’t they have high standards and expect 10 wins with the results they have. Fertitta loves Major and that’s really all that matters.

It's called principle, that is where we differ. To each their own.

Also, if you're going to make this decision, just leave the team, don't jump around pre-game showing that you aren't hurt at all and hiding behind the facade that you're "injured". Pretty much a middle finger to your teammates who bust their ass just as hard as you do, except most won't get to play football once they graduate from Houston.

Lastly, if you're are afraid of getting hurt, football isn't for you. The NFL needs to sack up and just let these guys go straight out of high school. Colleges and players hands are tied at this point.

I can agree with that,  but as for your romanticized view on college football you can't have the outsized levels of money in the sport and expect it to coexist with this yesteryear notion of college football.  That shit is done.

So 10 win seasons should be the standard for a program who has had five 10+ win seasons since 1980?

2 of them this decade and a 9 win season in 2016. Nothing wrong with setting a standard of high expectations

3. He's also kind of a dick. I'm sure this played into Oliver's reaction. I think it's fine to let Ed know the heavy jackets are for keeping guys in the game warm, so they don't pull a muscle. My guess is that Major went about it in a very Major way. Fairly confident this was the basis for the altercation, not the jacket itself.

Of course he's a dick. He's a fucking football coach.

Things change. Standards rise as time goes on. Houston should absolutely expect 9 and 10 win seasons in the present day.

Same as Kansas State's expectations changing in the late 90s moving on. TCU, too.

High school players straight to the NFL would be a fucking disaster. Could you imagine some 18yr old QB coming to play in the NFL? Lmao. Jumping from slow high school defenses to the speed of the NFL. It would be pure comedy. Football is a different beast in that regards than basketball where high schoolers have had success.

And Major is on pace to win 9 possibly 10 this season. To expect 10 every season from Houston is a little absurd when they have done it 5 times in 38 years.

Also, 10 wins is kind of a moving goal post. 10-1 is outstanding. 10-4 is ok.

This is America, an 18 year old shouldn't be forced to go to college if he doesn't want to, and an NFL organization should have the right to draft the kid if they want to. This cat and mouse game between colleges and players now is just stupid, allow these guys who want to make their money to go make it, no point in forcing them to go to college.

It’s the NFL’s rule.
