One common theme I see in all the Chechen videos is that there is never an enemy soliders firing back.  It all looks like them making a video of themselves shooting guns, rockets and grenades and pretending to be in combat...but really just near some abandoned building.

Wonder where we are going to get the Mi-17's.

We were sending dozens of them to Iraq and Afghanistan, and training Iraqi and Afghan pilots on them at Fort Rucker.  They are still in production, including a few places outside of Russia, so it's possible that either we had captured/bought a bunch of old ones, or had purchased newer ones.

Yep, was just curious. We could get some from allies and hook them up with Blackhawks/Apaches. Take that Putin!

Wait.  They're Russians, so I think I know what they mean by this.  Yes, the American flag is touching the ground at the start.  That's not kosher.  But as they move it flies up.  So....    they're flying the American flag on the back of their tank?

Can we consider this a false flag operation and add it to their list of violations?

I'm glad they're spending all of their time on pointless and confusing videos instead of, you know, learning how to fight.

The photos make this story.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has released a video in which a Ukrainian soldier disassembles a Russian military surveillance drone. The teardown revealed a remarkably rudimentary design that features a low-end Canon DSLR camera at its core.

The 2-minute video was published by ArmyInform, the information agency of Ukraine’s defense ministry. It shows a soldier sitting next to what it says is a Russian Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that had crashed in Ukraine.

The soldier notes how surprisingly low-tech the military drone is — observers quickly pointed out that certain aspects of it are more reminiscent of a hobbyist RC airplane project than a high-tech piece of military spying technology.

A Consumer Camera, Bottle Cap, and Duct Tape

Spoiler

What the soldier found is that the primary camera responsible for image capture is a Canon EOS Rebel T6i (AKA 750D), a DSLR camera launched in 2015 with a retail price of $750 but which is currently worth about $300 to $400 on the used market.

The camera is mounted to a board with a hook-and-loop fastener strip (commonly referred to as Velcro).

The mode dial of the camera has been frozen with glue, preventing the camera shooting mode from accidentally being switched mid-flight.

On the top of the drone, the fuel tank’s cap suggests that it may have been made from some kind of plastic water bottle. Various parts of the drone are also fixed together with some kind of duct tape.

A Pricey Piece of ‘Primitive’ Technology

The Ukrainian news agency UNIAN reported in 2017 after the downing of a drone that the Orlan-10 (Орлан-10 in Russian) costs between $87,000 and $120,000 per unit.

SlavicBrotherhood2018-13-800x533.jpg A soldier inspects a Orlan-10 on a launch catapult during training exercises. Photo by Mil.ru and licensed under CC BY 4.0.

“The Orlan-10 is developed by Russian-based Special Technological Center Ltd.” UNIAN wrote. “The hull and the engine are made in Russia, its electronic components come from Taiwan.

“Russia often uses this model in Donbas for reconnaissance and adjustment of artillery fire.”

It now seems some electronic components in the drone also come from Japan, as well. Canon Europe already announced in March that it had suspended new shipments of products into Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine, but it seems unlikely that the move will have any impact on whether Russia continues to use Canon cameras in its future drones.

If anybody wants to see the video of the tank firing on the soldiers

Moments before it happened

https://twitter.com/EliasMezaCota/status/1514018055248035841

You see the tank down the road at the end

https://twitter.com/EliasMezaCota/status/1514008495342899202

And then the tank actually firing upon them.

https://twitter.com/Russia_Ukrania/status/1514006825569562628

It's really odd because if it were a Russian tank, you'd think they'd be concerned as fuck to be rolling up on some Ukrainians, any of whom could have a Javelin at the ready, but then again, they may not have realized they were Ukrainians until they were too close (hard to see clearly out of a buttoned-up tank, and the BMP probably still had Russian markings).

If that's an actual Orlan-10, and they are using an old-ass camera when it's claimed the units cost over $80,000, what do you want to bet that somewhere in the supply chain some Russian is selling them that 7 year-old camera that's normally worth $300, for probably $10,000 or more?

The atrocities of WWII are what we are trying to avoid.  Read about the treatment from German soldiers.  Or the sobering "Rape of Nanking".  Tens upon tens of millions of civilian deaths.

The memorial in Nanjing is absolutely sobering. It's built on a mass burial pit which you can view in several places.

Nobody needs to turn Moscow into glass, at least not yet. I would start with something more tactical, like a couple of squadrons of A-10's, with support coverage, that should be able to effectively take care of armored columns that would no longer exist.

Though the big risk is Putin retaliates with tactical nukes.

As fucked up and shitty as Russia’s military is, I am not so sure their nuke isn’t 2 bottles of Clorox and a bottle rocket.

I'm not sure how much longer you can just sit on the sidelines and effectively allow this barbarism to continue. But I suppose that is the plan.

Putin: I have to do something to stop NATO expansion, and I have to do something to make sure Western Europe doesn't threaten Russia.

Putin: Goes and does something that adds Finland and Sweden to NATO, and increases chances that Western Europe comes into conflict with Russia.

Yep, Putin is aggy as fuck.

When does the "mud season" end over there?  Is there enough time left to finish painting a couple thousand M1's in Cold War style camo, or are we going to just roll with olive drab and/or khaki?

I’m in Temple some for work and I’ve seen 4 trainloads of tracked vehicles presumably heading out from Hood and another Surly poster saw a loading operation in port of Houston on potentially a fifth I believe. I’m not there everyday so I could have not seen several more. I’ve seen a load of freshly painted OD M1s (below), a load of OD painted self propelled howitzers, a mixed load of desert tan and OD rolling stock, and today a load of camo BFVs.

Nope, if they were bound overseas they would usually be heading to the port in Beaumont.  That one looks to be travelling between Fort Hood and the north, or vice-versa.

There has always been lots of military trains crossing the US, its just getting noticed more since the war started.  The one that got attention a few days ago in Temple was actually loads from Beaumont headed to a camp in Minnesota.  I've been told Ft Hood trains are very common to and from bases in California, Colorado, and Georgia.  Many moves to Fort Polk also go through Texas.  I'm sure there are probably others.

I have no idea what is or isn't shipping overseas now, just that rail moves have always been common.  I wouldn't read anything into it unless it was loads near Beaumont headed to the port.

Keep in mind it took half a year to do the logistics for Desert Storm not 45 days. There is a hell of a lot of USA shit flooding NATO/Europe/Ukraine even faster than during the greatest logistics feat in all of the military history of the world for Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

It's probably starting to dry in some areas. It's about like us. Gets dry in late spring and summer.
