2023 Republican Government Shutdown: Same Shit, Same Story

The timing has me wondering about the play here.  The GOP has until January 3 to get something done in an environment where they control both houses of Congress.  After January 3, any resolution has to get through a Dem-controlled House.

Seems to me that either this gets done by the 3rd.....or we have a standoff that could go for the long haul.  At that point, I think the House passes legit CRs, and puts them on the Senate's desk to deal with.  Let the Senate side with Trump and take the fall for not passing something that the vast majority of Americans will agree with.  Let them get all the way on board the sinking SS Trump.

When it comes to this, the GOP doesn't really have control of the Senate as it takes 60 votes.  Trump tried to get McConnell to fight that but McConnell didnt want to touch the 60 vote threshold.

Schumer has zero incentive to give Trump his 5B or 1.5B or whatever for the Wall.  Trump is going to have to offer something in return.  Publicly I don't believe anything has been offered.

He has nothing to offer.

This is the problem with Trump's zero-sum thinking (he does this in business, and we've seen it in action with respect to our allies).  It has no play once the other side says "nahh, get fucked."  You either win, or you lose, 100%.  Once the "you win" option is off the table, then you best lube up, cuz you're about to get fucked.

Good.  Fuck him.  Let him take every opportunity to lose, and make him make the most of it.

Trump doesn’t understand that politics is the art of compromise.

For Trump, politics is warfare, always has been.

Good.  Then the only play is to fight back until his unconditional surrender.  If he won't compromise, then his fate needs to be sealed on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

The house democrats should pass the exact same CR the Senate voted 100-0 for, make them eat their own shit.

I’m guessing that because it’s a new Congress, the Senate would have to pass this again, right?  Or would the House passing it send it straight to Trump’s desk?

If it’s the former, McConnell will be in a fascinating position.  Normally he’d say “we won’t vote on anything the President doesn’t support”, but given their relationship at the moment, he may just being it up for a vote.

What's funny about this whole thing is that only MASSIVE fucking stupidity made it happen.  It's the mentality that yeah I know I burned the shit out of my hand on that red hot burner, but just because i got burned last time, maybe this red hot burner won't burn me.... OUCH!

Actually that's probably not the case at all, as that presumption would assume that Trump was thinking and analyzing his situation.

Instead I simply think that Trump feels the need to ALWAYS fight. As he believes the next new fight will help move the news cycle past his lact act of stupidity.  Unfortunately this time around the only thing Trump is gonna get is a lump of coal, and a much lesser ability to distract until he takes care of this mess. The irony is that Trump lies so much and his followers are such mindless gnomes, that all he need do is sign whatever the Dems send to him and declare victory. His supporters will cheer at his success!

So...... I'm guessing the Dems will just wait until the new Congress is sworn in and retract that Ryan CR proposal and send a clean CR bill to the Senate, who had voted for it a few weeks earlier.... 100-0.

Yep. Let McConnell deal with it.

Nancy Pelosi is the best.

My bride follows on the Twitters a number of federal agencies. Here's the US Office of Personnel Management's ideas and suggestions for getting through this  shutdown:

There's a word doc at the link.  It has some wonderful information, such as bartering with your landlord in lieu of rent.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the plot of some pornographic movies?

Quote

Sample Letter to Landlord

Dear (Name of Company or individual with whom you have spoken)

This is to confirm our conversation of (date) in which we discussed a temporary reduction in my monthly rent.

As we discussed, I am a Federal employee who has recently been furloughed due to a lack of funding of my agency.  Because of this, my income has been severely cut and I am unable to pay the entire cost of my rent, along with my other expenses.

As we had agreed in our conversation, I will be able to make regular payments in the amount of $_______.  I realize that I will be responsible to pay the remainder of the payments and, when I return to work, I will contact you immediately to work out a plan to take care of the reduced payments.  I will keep in touch with you to keep you informed about my income status and I would like to discuss with you the possibility of trading my services to perform maintenance (e.g. painting, carpentry work) in exchange for partial rent payments.

I appreciate your willingness to work with me and your understanding during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

How is this not a HUGE fucking deal?!

The president, whose party controls the entirety of the government, has forced a shutdown of said government over a false flag, which coincidentally has also halted an investigation into his storied and ongoing corruption.

Are we in fucking Panama?! Throw this corrupt traitor and all his enablers into the deepest, darkest hole from which they cannot emerge and piss on them until they drown in a flood of poisonous pain.

SIAP posted but obviously this guy has never worked in corporate America and doesn't understand the definition of the words he's using.    I worked alongside a disaster contingency group at a Fortune 50 company, and very few employees were labeled as essential during an emergency.     The essential employee label wasn't sought after because you were required to leave your home/family during an emergency and focus on temporarily transitioning business functions to other global offices.

America isn't prosperous enough. We need some trade wars and shutdowns to really shine.

The Mulaney "Horse Loose in the Hospital" bit is so dead on.

"But sometimes I ask people. I go, 'hey, how come you opened the door for the horse?' And they go, 'WELL THE HOSPITAL WAS INEFFICIENT!'"

Has anyone ever not heard of non-essential employees in the private sector?

Has he never heard of a skeleton crew?

Presently involved in litigation against the US (so, opposing side is represented by the DOJ).  They are on a "skeleton crew," to put it lightly.  You ain't gettin' nuthin' done unless someone is about to die, like, TODAY....and then, maybe.

Wouldn't shock me to see Trump, having realized that this shuts down all prosecution activity against him, keeps the shutdown going for that, new reason.  He can't keep it up forever....but he might think he can.

I think it's only civil cases that are affected by the shutdown (other than federal prosecutors are currently working without pay).  I think the special counsel is still fully operational.   Although trump may think the investigation can't continue during the shutdown.

I guess I get the overflowing garbage (I'm not entirely sure why you couldn't generally take it with you) but the leaving bags of garbage along the roads?

And fuck whoever is doing the off-roading with a broken log. That's really just bullshit.
