Southold Kitchen they closed after like 6 months of actually being open but are doing pop ups right now. i'm assuming they will be doing more pop up style stuff, they spent a fortune on the building

Their space is fantastic and you cannot beat that view.  Haven't been out there in about a year but really really need to go back.  The food at their restaurant was really very good.

yeah, i think it was fairly shocking to close it.

their issue is that they are 25 min from FBG and like 20 from Johnson City. that assumes you don't get caught behind someone going slow on a back road.

they spent a ton on the land, a ton on the restaurant based on how awesome it looks and a ton to set up the winery from scratch.

yup. with 1 days notice.

dont know what to say about this poor lady.  ive been to three of her places there and they were all top notch, maybe the best restaurants in town for what they were.  she might be the best pastry chef in the state.  but damn if there isnt something odd and suspicious about her not being able to keep a restaurant open.

this is all like fifth hand at this point, but my understanding is she is a great chef but not a great businessperson which is why the other ones closed.

emma + ollie was supposed to get around it by having her be an employee vs an owner. still not 100% sure what happened, but they closed on (very) short notice and rumor is there was a disagreement with the landlord. so no clue if this was her fault or not.

emma + ollie should have worked out very well and been open for years to come. i enjoyed their food, rec'd them a ton and will do the same wherever she opens next.

Just spent the weekend there with the wife.  Had a great time.

Sad that 87 Icebox is no more.

Enjoyed some wine from several places (William Chris, Becker, Baron's Creek, the Tannat from Wedding Oak).

Stayed in some newly built "cabins" on the Wedding Oak/Los Pinos property.  Liked the location as it is about 5 minutes East of town, right across from Altstadt, and about 8 minutes from Luckenbach.  Highly recommend for peace/quiet if it's just you and the wife, and they have larger ones with 2 master's suites as well.  lonestarcabins.com

Spent part of saturday afternoon down in Luckenbach.  Perfect day for it.

Can't wait til next trip.

I spent the weekend here as well for a 40th bday celebration. I will not be going back, mainly bc I am not much of a wine guy. Velvet Lounge (karaoke bar) was the highlight for me, and our entire group for that matter.

Alamo Springs Cafe and the bat viewing is a pretty nice 1-2 punch if you can swing it. Those onion rings are the best ones I’ve had in a long time.

@NoName or anyone else with an opinion-any suggestions on a favorite lodging recommendation?  We live in Austin so lodging needs to have some special appeal to justify $300/night (looks like the base price for most downtown adjacent airbnb’s on a Saturday), otherwise we’d likely just head home after a day trip, particularly since there’s really not much nightlife there.

this weekend specifically or just in general?

1 night only?

stonewall motor lodge gets great pub here, but it's in Stonewall: https://www.stonewallmotorlodge.com/

look up the Emigrants Inn downtown. Its on AirBNB but know they have historically dropped the prices the closer they get to a date without it being booked. It's like maybe 8-10 rooms in a "hotel" but they are all individual Air BNBs and is fine. its across the st from the Nimitz on the corner basically of Washington & Main

feel free to PM me, happy to share more info in general. if you are coming in the future, i know some folks. can't promise any deals but can promise they are responsive and do good work/will take care of you...

During our last visit to Fredericksburg, we met a guy wearing UT gear (as was I) and in the ensuing conversation, he recommended Pasta Bella.  Said he’s been all over the planet and this restaurant has the best Italian food he’s ever had.  He wasn’t just a woofing.  I had the chicken parmigiana and my wife had the shrimp scampi.  The food was outstanding.

I posted above, but check out www.lonestarcabins.com (especially if for 1 night).  We stayed there in April and were very pleased.  Newly built, stone cabins.  Clean, roomy, comfortable, and reasonably priced.   About a 6 minute drive into downtown (basically across the highway from Aldstadt)

What’s the best option for a dinner spot these days?  We’re staying at Barons Creek but figure we’ll need to come downtown for food.

I’m a little lost without Eater recs or a good Surly thread.

depends on what you are in the mood for

  • "northern italian style steakhouse" - newest/hottest spot in FBG is Alla Campagna on Main. wife's favorite app in town is their roasted garlic & ricotta meatballs. highly rec the bucatini and wild boar paparadelle. had almost all of their pizzas, but the margherita is the one we go back to. i would skip the steak, it's good but not $80 good. sides are ok - charred broccolini is excellent. their tiramisu is the best dessert in Fredericksburg. if you want something to go, they have a side entrance off of Milam for to go orders - recent one from wife and I was to order the bucatini, add a couple of the ricotta meatballs + pizza and split it. highly recommend a reservation, they use Tock. probably want to sit inside based on weather.
  • live music, bar food and strong margaritas? Hondos - queso, grilled chicken sandwich, burgers, brisket mac & cheese are all great.warning: it's a self serve restaurant which bothers some folks but who cares. waiting list only, no reservations - you want to sit outside though.
  • if you want good food and a little less fancy, with outdoor seating and a more new orleans style flair? Granite House. all of their apps are solid to very good. best chicken fried steak in Fredericksburg, get the fried egg on top. they have a seafood pasta special every night that's very good. i like their shrimp and grits. waiting list only, no reservations - you want to sit outside though.
  • if you want good food and a little more upscale? Hill & Vine - carnita nachos, tri tip, redfish are all good. croissant bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts in FBG. i think they are waiting list only now, no reservations
  • If you want fancy and the items on the menu look appealing to you, but seems more expensive than it should be? Vaudeville -Mediterranean plate, chicken pesto pizza, charred octopus. reservations recommended, i think they use RESY.
  • If you want fancy and the items on the menu look appealing to you? Ottos is pretty well regarded as the "best" restaurant in FBG but their menu just never has pulled me in. had good experiences, but just not a menu that's for me. highly recommend a reservation, they use Tock
  • actual Mediterranean food? Cafe Dimona (new spot in town, where Emma & Ollie used to be - know some back of house folks, just started dinner service recently)

no matter where you go you should finish at OroBianco Creamery (just opened in FBG, they have locations in Stonewall and Blanco): try all that you want to, but the cutrus crema is incredible, wife loves the mint stracciatella, and they have more seasonal flavors that are not on their website. also an affogato with their house made gelatos is a life changing experience https://www.orobiancomilk.com/products/

here is where you shouldn't go and why

  • Sage: super fancy but not really filling or that good and obscenely expensive for what it is
  • Martini's: do you want a couple of hundred dollar seafood tower in Fredericksburg? what about fresh oysters? also this is the loudest place in town, and you support owners who are generally pretty shitty. avoid at literally all costs.
  • Jack's Chop House: owned by the same folks as Martini's, also very expensive for FBG so we have avoided it. it's evidently gotten better since it opened but i'll never know.
  • Burger Burger: so many better burger spots in FBG - Pecan Grove, Tubbys, Hondos,
  • Mamacita's Restaurant: go to Campo Azul if you want cheap Mexican food, it's significantly better in every single way
  • Altdorf: know a local who called it a freezer to table restaurant and that's basically what it is in my experience. lots of Chef Mike cooking things up in the back. very mediocre.

couple of bonus spots for you

  • Caliche: best coffee in town and nothing else is close. can take your lady friend there for an excellent avocado toast - i usually get the green chile grits bowl if they have it on menu. next door to Alla Campagna.
  • Pritzers Sweet Shop: if you are walking around downtown this is a little tiny bakery that has excellent baked good. crossiants are great, large salted pretzel - go to are their cookies: cowboy, snickerdoodle or cinnamon toast marshmallow
  • Piccolina: italian ice spot downtown (main & lincoln) that's fantastic - use local produce as much as possible. try all their flavors, but the lemon is the best seller for a reason. https://www.instagram.com/piccolina.fbg/?hl=en
  • Pontotac Winegarten - like 2 doors down from Hondos and on the same block as Hondos, Alla Campagna and Caliche. cool spot off of Main that you can sit, enjoy some wine or their house made sangria. order the picnic packet which is some homemade pimento cheese, bread, olives, nuts, chocolate chip cookie, berries and sausage if you want to sit for a minute.
  • Woerner Warehouse: solid lunch spot, good sandwiches and salads - make sure you order the Key Lime Pie
  • Tubby's Ice House: behind the Nimitz off of Austin St. excellent burgers and very kid friendly if you need that. easy spot to sit outside and enjoy the weather if it's nice.
  • Prometheus Pizza: new york style pizza that's currently a BYOB food truck, with a B&M opening in the very near future off of San Antonio St. Breakfast of Champions (white sauce, mozz, potato, Force of Nature wild boar chorizo, fines herbes, black pepper, cured egg yolk) is a go to order. they also have great pepperoni that actually gives you pep cups.
  • Hilda's: get the breakfast taco only. they have a drive through. don't go for mexican food.
  • Pecan Grove: best burger for my money in FBG. it's north of town a bit and service is slow but you are drinking a beer in an...old pecan grove...and enjoying live music. much more of a locals spot than a tourist spot.
  • Eaker BBQ (off West Main): Top 50 BBQ joint with a Korean flair - can't recommend them enough but you are looking for dinner, which they don't have anymore sadly. their saturday special is typically a pork belly burnt end made one of a few different ways (hot honey glazed, gochujang glazed, raspberry chipolte glazed, jalapeno, mango habanero, etc) - great BBQ and even better people that own it. https://www.instagram.com/eakerbarbecue/
  • Der Lindenbaum - i don't eat German food but if you do, the only place to go

happy to answer any specific questions/recs here or via PM!

That’s crazy. We actually had lunch there last weekend. With both Porkys and Alamo Springs closed, that only leaves Pecan Grove for a great burger.

The new best burger in town is the smashburger at The Standard, by far. It's incredible.

Also RIP Tubbys. I need to update my full rec list.

Quick updates:

Prometheus Pizzas Trattoria is open and is fabulous. If you want great food this is the spot.

Casa Chloe just opened up in the last two weeks. Have either had almost everything on the menu or been at the table when someone ordered it. It's incredible. Do yourself a favor: Sit outside if the weather is even halfway decent. Favorites are the tortilla soup, smoked chicken nachos (brisket is ok, but their smoked chicken is incredible), tacos (shrimp) and flan. The churro looks fantastic but we never go away from the flan. Great cocktail menu. Bow did a great job with  it. He's the owner, old guy who sits at the end of the bar in a cowboy hat - go say hi. They are going through the usual restaurant  opening in Fred issues with staff but fully believe it's going to work out - don't be in a gigantic hurry. Also they don't allow kids under 10. Have a ton of tequilla and mezcal options.

Eaker is now open Friday and Saturday evenings.

If you are out on 290, Leroy's Tex Mex BBQ is mexi-que. Really good across the board, and they have v solid but expensive breakfast tacos in the morning. Their queso is awesome, looks small but they go through the line fast. Great seating area outside. Attached to Jensche Farms next to Trade Days.

Sure Shot is an easy in/out place for coffee. Small menu, across the street from Whataburger. Check their insta for hours, sometimes they move on Saturday morning  to soccer fields. Still prefer Caliche straight up but it's faster and easier for locals on Saturday morning.

Taqueria Machetes is downtown next to the Nimitz. Hildas is easier for breakfast tacos but Machetes is better and it isn't really close. They also have a salsa bar that's awesome.

Take your lady to Six Twists. Champagne bar across the street from Bubble Bus and next door to OroBianco. Champagne bar basically that does some awesome tastings. Very unique spot. If you don't like bubbly, go like four doors down to Ferris & Fletch. Extremely kid friendly if you go to the back yard, and they have great wines made by even better people.

Leroy's are good. A bit too thin sometimes which can cause an issue with tacos obviously

On the other side, Hildas can be too thick but that's their style for chips too - closer to Totopos

Next round of updates:

Los Tios is a new Mexican food place where August Es used to be. Chain from Houston but it's easily the best Mexican food in town. Ordering online / ahead works perfectly too. Best fajitas in town, by a million miles.

Revive Organics used to be called something else but it's a locally owned smoothie / juice / coffee / whatever else place that's just across the street from HEB. Not my jam but the wife loves it as does every lady I know in town. Awesome owners, great service.

Kaffee Haus was downtown and moved over off Austin St across from Marktplatz. Not anywhere as good as Caliche but miles ahead of almost every other option in town outside of Sureshot. Way better than The Pharmacy (long lines, sub par coffee and baked goods that look incredible and taste mediocre), Java Ranch (the most mediocre of mediocre despite like a decade of being open), Rock Haus, etc.

Holy smokes... when Los Tios is the "best Mexican food in town", that tells me the Mexican food in Fredericksburg must suuuuuck.

There's a reason people call it "Gross Tios"

Super nice hotel. Awesome bar in the hotel, heard hit and miss on the restaurant.

In the middle of downtown, great location. They have another bar attached to it on main called The Saloon. Not a fan of their attached coffee shop (The Pharmacy.)

Vaudeville is next door, really solid restaurant. Like a block down is Taqueria Machetes which is great.

If you have any questions or want specific recs please post here or shoot me a PM.

Gigantic construction company issues. I believe they still aren't open at full capacity. The interest had to eat them alive for two years.

Alamo Springs Cafe reopened in late February.  Supposedly a lot of the same people are still there.

Guys that bought it from original owners just kind of quit paying so original owners are involved with helping new owners get it up and going is my understanding. Brought back some old staff and old recipes.

Great weekend in Fredericksburg.  Lonestar Cabins was great even though we didn't use the kitchen.  It was nice on the back porch in the mornings looking at some Barron Creek grapes and wildlife. Had an armadillo come and visit this morning too.  Ate at Altstadt and Auslander for German fare, but NoName can be trusted with his recommendations...Woerner Cafe, Alla Campagna, and Prometheus were all excellent. A lonestar red in Luckenbach capped it all off nicely.

  • Prometheus Pizzas Trattoria is fabulous. If you want great food this is the spot, they have a pretty set/standard menu (salads, pizza, apps), then a set entrée list (Steak Frites, roman chicken, fish of some kind) then nightly specials. Love their pizzas (started off as a NY-style ish food truck thats still open.) Awesome neighborhood spot, with a serious wine program. Great desserts, favorite is the Tiramisu – if this makes sense it’s way more coffee forward than cream forward, which I love. They are wine/beer only and walk in only.
  • Casa Chloe - Think higher-end Mexican food. They have a ton of rules around kids staying in seats and a bunch of other ones, its not particularly quiet inside but the food is worth it. Just check the rules ahead of time. Recommend getting a reservation ahead of time
  • Eaker BBQ (off West Main): former Top 50 BBQ joint with a Korean flair on the sides- can't recommend them enough. Texas Trinity is awesome. House made sausage that’s on point. their saturday special is typically a pork belly burnt end made one of a few different ways (hot honey glazed, gochujang glazed, raspberry chipolte glazed, jalapeno, mango habanero, etc) - great BBQ and even better people that own it. https://www.instagram.com/eakerbarbecue/
  • Vaudeville - recommend the Mediterranean plate, chicken pesto pizza, charred octopus, lump crab curry (Fri night only), and braised beef over polenta is awesome. We order basically the same stuff every time – med plate app, chicken pesto pizza and split an entree. Their pot de crème is excellent, as is coconut rice pudding. Cool downstairs setting off Main, great date spot. Cookies are also great, but at $5+ per they are comically expensive and never worth it. Just order there, and then go drive over to Austin St Creamery. reservations recommended, i think they use RESY.
  • Los Tios is a new Mexican food place where August Es used to be. Chain from Houston but it's easily the best Mexican food in town. Best fajitas in town, by a million miles. I know that it gets a bad rap from Houston people, but it really is awesome here in Fred. Not sure what’s different. Been a line a lot of the time there, but usually goes pretty quickly. Best “order ahead” / to go process of anywhere in town.
  • Hondos - we usually order some combo of queso, grilled chicken sandwich, burgers, brisket mac & cheese are all great. strong margs, recommend the spicy one. They have live music basically every night and they finally added fans outside during COVID. warning: it's a self serve restaurant which bothers some folks but who cares. waiting list only, no reservations - you want to sit outside though.
  • Ottos is pretty well regarded as the "best" restaurant in FBG but their menu just never has pulled me in. had good experiences, but just not a menu that's for me. highly recommend a reservation, they use Tock
  • Want actual Mediterranean food? Cafe Dimona
  • Alla Campagna on Main. Northern Italian steakhouse. wife's favorite app in town is their roasted garlic & ricotta meatballs. highly rec the bucatini and wild boar paparadelle. had almost all of their pizzas, but the margherita is the one we go back to. i would skip the steak, it's good but not $80 good. sides are ok - charred broccolini is excellent. their tiramisu is great, more creamy than coffee-forward.
  • highly recommend a reservation, they use Tock. probably want to sit inside based on weather.
  • if you want something to go, they have a side entrance off of Milam for to go orders - recent one from wife and I was to order the bucatini, add a couple of the ricotta meatballs + pizza and split it
  • Woerner Warehouse: solid lunch spot, good sandwiches and salads - make sure you order the Key Lime Pie!
  • Pecan Grove is the best burger for my money in FBG. it's north of town a bit and service is slow but you are drinking a beer in an...old pecan grove...and enjoying live music. much more of a locals spot than a tourist spot. wine/beer only.
  • If you are out on 290, Leroy's Tex Mex BBQ is mexi-que. Really good across the board, and they have v solid but expensive breakfast tacos in the morning. Their queso is awesome, looks small but they go through the line fast. Great seating area outside. Attached to Jensche Farms next to Trade Days.
  • Emi’s on Main – behind the Nimitz, where Tubby’s Ice House used to be. Super friendly fast casual Mexican food spot. Beer/wine only I believe. Really the most kid friendly food spot in town, you can order online for pickup too. Highly recommend if you have kids.
  • Taqueria Machetes is downtown next to the Nimitz. Hildas is easier for breakfast tacos but Machetes is better and it isn't really close. They also have a salsa bar that's awesome.
  • Airport Diner – located at the airport, going for a diner look/feel. Food is just ok, but it’s never been bad and it’s the best spot in town for a view – you literally look out on the landing strip for the FBG Airport. 40’s style diner, gets SUPER busy at times but you can walk around the landing strip and look at the planes while you wait for a seat or for food to come out. Lots of rocking chairs next door in the shade at the Hanger Hotel

Coffee:

  • Caliche is the best coffee in town and nothing else is close. can take your lady friend there for an excellent avocado toast - i usually get the green chile grits bowl if they have it on menu. next door to Alla Campagna. they roast their own beans and know their coffee shit.
  • Sure Shot is an easy in/out place for coffee. Small menu, across the street from Whataburger. Still prefer Caliche straight up but it's faster and easier for locals on Saturday morning, lots of locals end up going here
  • Revive Organics used to be called something else but it's a locally owned smoothie / juice / coffee / whatever else place that's just across the street from HEB. Not my jam but the wife loves it as does literally every single lady I know in town. Awesome owners, great service. I think you can order online/ahead also.

Dessert:

  • Austin Street Creamery – off of Austin Street, near Austin St and Crockett. The best ice cream in town by a wide margin. Hours are 3-8 or 3-9, it’s a walk up ice cream window attached to a boutique hotel / airBNB place (Whitetail Court) – tried almost all of their non chocolate offerings and every single one is awesome. Steve has spent a ton of hours  on their recipes, they make them all in house/from scratch and you can absolutely tell.
  • Pritzers Sweet Shop: if you are walking around downtown this is a little tiny bakery that has excellent baked good. croissants are great, large salted pretzel - go to are their cookies: cowboy, snickerdoodle or cinnamon toast marshmallow
  • Piccolina: italian ice spot downtown (main & lincoln) that's fantastic - use local produce as much as possible. try all their flavors, but the lemon is the best seller for a reason.

Beer/Wine/Bars:

  • Witcher Craft Brewing Company – brewery out on 290, like 10 min out of Fredericksburg. Genuinely, the most kid friendly spot in the area. Best soft pretzel I’ve ever had. Bunch of different beer options, wife enjoys their seltzer as well. Chips and salsa is great, pimento cheese is great, sausages are awesome. They are adding some BBQ options currently. Have a big area inside to sit and watch games, or enjoy the AC if it’s hot outside. Back yard area is set up perfectly for younger / older kids to play https://witcherbrewingco.com/
  • Ferris & Fletch. Extremely kid friendly if you go to the back yard, and they have great wines made by even better people. Can’t go wrong with their product, highly recommend it. Next door is the new lobster roll place (they have been a food truck for probably a year looking for a B&M in town)
  • Take your lady to Six Twists. Champagne bar across the street from Bubble Bus. Champagne bar basically that does some awesome tastings. Very unique spot.
  • The Restaurant at Albert Hotel. Extremely meh reviews for locals on the food, maybe its better now but I’ll never know. Great bar though, go with your lady friend, enjoy an app or just people watch at the bar there. Again, the restaurant is mediocre. Not a fan of their coffee shop on Main (The Pharmacy) – long lines, pastries look awesome but flavor doesn’t match the look. Coffee is mediocre. Go to Caliche or Sure Shot instead.
  • Other Winery recs:
  • Signor is a beautiful vineyard off of 290, they just opened a spot in town off of Crockett St like half a block off of Main, haven’t been there yet
  • Lost Draw is the first place when you are leaving Johnson City heading to Fredericksburg, they used to be in town but moved out a few years ago, awesome area and kid friendly
  • William Chris is probably the best wine in the area, again can be kid friendly and a bunch of different places to sit across their property. Located in Hye

Honestly, we used to suggest to go to 290 spots, which you can but with Ponotoac, Signor, Ferris & Fletch all in town and a bunch of people having tasting rooms off of Main you can still taste a bunch without being out on 290

One line reviews for some other popular places

Spoiler
  • Texas Sunrise is great for brunch but gets busy
  • Martinis is here, serves seafood towers for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and is the loudest place i've ever been.
  • Campo Azul is good for standard mexican food, nowhere else is worth going to imo, avoid mamacitas like your life depends on it
  • Panda is the locals spot for chinese food
  • Belly up brew pub has some good beers and good food. should probably add them to the list above, but like Witcher better
  • Sunday Supply and Kaffee Haus are fine coffee places. I don't give any money to Rockhouse for lots of reasons, Java Ranch has been here a million years but is so far behind Caliche, Sure Shot, Sunday Supply and Kaffee Haus it isn't funny. spend your dollars somewhere better
  • Hill and Vine has great food in a cool location but have turned off a ton of locals and I personally won't be back due to service issues (a lot of them)
  • Hildas has the easiest breakfast tacos in town. If your wife is under the weather after a long day out Friday, go to Sure Shot and get a coffee, then go pick up breakfast tacos from Hildas
  • Older locals like Backwoods BBQ. Don't have high expectations for any of their smoked meats, although their Steak night is always solid.
  • BurgerBurger is the very definition of fine. You can go get a way way way better burger, better ambiance, better drinks and better apps at Hondos.

as always, happy to make recs or answer any specific questions people may have. Needed to update the list due to places closing/new reviews.

Thanks @NoName, heading there in a few weeks with some friends. I have heard Uber is not reliable. Do you have any recs on a ride share or driving service? The place we are staying is about ten minutes outside of town.

I can ask around, Uber or Lyft are usually pretty reliable these days, and being like 10 min out of town should be fine with Uber I bet.

I've seen these guys around town: https://uridezllc.com/ and Black Sheep: https://www.theblacksheeptours.com/
