On the fence would be a best-case scenario.

We were offered that & ashes yesterday for the cat but we declined, got plenty of pics and videos to reminisce.

Sorry for your loss.

My daughter and I went to the Houston Pets Alive puppypalooza last weekend.  They brought puppy’s from shelters all around the metro area together for adoption.  It was cuteness overload.  I’m surprised I managed to leave without at least one. It was a good pick me up that I really needed.

My collection of these boxes has gotten too large.

We have four of these and will have two more within the next 6 years more than likely.  Grateful for the pictures, videos, and good times shared with each of them.  May your memories and happiness shared with your beautiful girl give you peace and serenity as the days go by.

There used to be a guy in Austin who rode his motorcycle downtown with a completely unrestrained dog or two on the seat behind him, wearing goggles.  Those dogs had incredible balance.

I remember a guy that used to go to Zilker with his dog that did that. He was probably 50+ year old with dyed black hair and rode like an older Kawasaki or Honda.

Bailey waiting patiently for foods and/or walks, or walks and/or foods.  Becoming rather chow-oriented in her old age.  You can see the lipomas pretty clear in this one.

Yes I know I need to dust.

God damn, I had to put our yellow lab down yesterday. I idolized my father but somehow I think I shed a few more tears for the dog? I think it’s because I know how deeply it affected my kids. Thanks Dad, I have a much greater appreciation for all the shit you had to do that I never gave a second thought about. RIP Kodi, you were such a sweet guy.

I've cried harder from losing pets than some family members. It's probably a common thing that not everyone wants to admit.

Same.

When my baby girl Amber of 16 years passed I felt something break inside me. I get choked up just typing this.

It will happen again, which is why i cherish every moment.

Well after losing ginger last year we just adopted this guy from APA recently. His name became Ozzy - lab / something mix. . He’s supposed to be around 6 months but I think he may be a little older. Who knows. He’s getting neutered this week.

Biggest issue is getting him and the cat acclimated so I like to get him in some training after his surgery. Either both private or in group class or both. Cat issue is the main thing right now. Do you all have recommendations for SW Austin area.

This handsome fellow went to The Canine Center just past the y out 290.

It was during COVID so it was drop-off in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon. I still have no idea what all they taught him, but he definitely knows all the basics of being a good boy like sit, stay, heel, too far, etc.

That’s his brand new puppy fur!! He was maybe 7 months old.

he knows shake, beg, stomp your feet and boof to get a bone or couch time, sad eyes to guilt us when we leave him home, guard the exit so he can go, knock on the car window so you’ll let it down, and so many more. Smart fella, always learning.

My proudest accomplishment with him is come and touch to my whistle, but he’s thinking it’s a bit optional in his wise middle age.

he’s all growed up now at 6 years old.

Had "the talk" with a mobile vet today.  It may be time for Gumbo, our 13.5 year old catahoula mix.  She's such a sweet dog but her quality of life has gone way downhill.  I want to do the deed at home with my wife and kids in attendance.  Anybody know the options for dealing with the body?  The vet will cremate but I'm not a very sentimental guy.

I feel bad for Gumbo but I also feel like I took responsiblity for her and I owe her some dignity.

If you need something, do the paw print in clay then have her cremated. Unless you want the ashes in an urn or box.

I don't need the ashes.  A pawprint is an awesome idea, she has the best paws in the world.

Since we are on the slightly macabre subject, everyone should be aware that animal cremations are not individually done, unless you specify and pay for such. Otherwise, several are done at the same time so any ashes you ask for would be…commingled with others.

it’s not something that vets freely offer up usually.

Every dog that has ever been my companion is buried under some trees in a pasture at our ranch.  It has always been my hope, and my final instructions make it clear, for my ashes to be put in a tree pod in that same pasture.  My mom is 95 and fading pretty fast, and it has become pretty clear that the ranch won't survive for very long after she passes.  This makes me unbelievably sad.

I knew  vet care pricing was  getting a little nuts but this report is pretty eye opening as to why vet care costs have skyrocketed in the last few years.

In aug of '23 my Sadie started walking at a slighlty diagonal angle to me.. instead of coming directly at me, she was walking a few degrees off to her left.  Vet recommended taking her to Pet Specialist of Austin on 39th & Guad.    I went there, let them do some basic tests and they gave me the devastating news that she most likely had a brain tumor, and probably 3-5 months to live.

They said they couldnt be sure without doing a MRI.  and all that assurance would give me is final confirmation that she was going to be gone in a few months.  But i would "know" for sure when it came time to say goodbye.

I asked how much it would cost and their quote absolutely shocked me.

It shocked me because I had had an MRI myself  less than 3 months earlier where I was offered the choice of using insurance and dealing with the copays and all the insurance craziness, or I could just pay $1900 Out of Pocket and have it done (used Insurance).

So I assumed the cost would be somewhere around $1900 for a dog MRI....

No isnt even remotely the right word to describe the quote I got....   $5,300.   more than FIVE FUCKING THOUSAND DOLLARS to confirm that my girl was going to die in 5 months anyway.

I sat there stunned and told them my cost on my MRI just months earlier  and I got told that its because they have to take extra precautions and that the dog has to be sedated and thats why it cost was almost 3X as much...

(oh yeah and at 14, the death rate of sedating a dog is much higher)

I was like BULLSHIT... yeah sedation costs like $200, the doc to watch the dog might be another $400, and an overnight stay being monitored is probably another $200.    $2800 max, and you all are quoting basically DOUBLE that ammount?

I immediately knew they were trying to guilt pet parents into spending more than they needed to.  left, spent the next 4 months loving her and saying goodbye in Dec

Local vets getting acquired by large conglomerates can't be helping that either.  I used Lake Austin Blvd Animal Hospital for 16 or 17 years and loved the relationship, for the most part.  They were acquired by Livewell a year or two ago, and their service just went to shit.  Tried to live through their growing pains, but the overall incompetency finally broke me a couple months ago.  Requested all records and moved on.

we have pet insurance and I won't have a dog without it. yeah it's pricey but idgaf I'm not interested in the $5000 vet bill that I'm guilt tripped into. cost of the insurance keeps going up but at this point it's like $800-1000 per year and I'm sure it will go up more. if all goes well we will never recoup it but I'm not ok with being stressed and sad and worried and then having to decide between a bullshit price for a service and doing for my puppy what I'd do for my kids. not happening.
