I was quoting Police Academy the other day ("not on broccoli, not on cauliflower)- was thinking about showing it to my 13 yo and 9yo. I can't remember much about it. Is it fairly clean?

also reminds me of one of my favorite Simpsons quotes:

Homer Simpson: STEALING! How could you? Why do you think I took you to see all those "Police Academy" movies, FOR FUN? I DIDN'T HEAR ANYONE LAUGHING, DID YOU?

Hooks drives over white jerk cadet’s feet. “Watch what you’re doing you dumb n****r!”

captain harris: “oh shit”

hightower flips cruiser over

or something like that.

Plus the leather bar scene.

Yeah, there were quite a few PG movies that actually showed boob.

Even Goonies had a lot more mildly bad language than I remembered, I was recently watching it with my 8yo son and 10yo daughter and I had to keep telling them in asides, "Don't say that!"

Hell, I think Woman in Red showed bush and it was PG or PG-13

I think the actual quote from Harris to Hooks was: "you dumb, fat ji**aboo"- not that it's any better

I tried showing the original Karate Kid to my 11 yo a couple of years ago and it didn't go over well. She did love Goonies, back to the future and Gremlins though
Sounds like you and I are doing the same thing. Friday nights have become classic movie night. My 12 year-old loved Karate Kid... "It's almost as good as Ferris Bueller."

I have lots of favorite movies, but I think the two that I truly enjoy watching most are both in this genre. Back to the Future and Christmas Vacation. What is the right age to let a kid watch Back to the Future for the first time and have any kind of understanding as to what is going on? I let him watch Christmas Vacation with me and he didn't understand 3/4 of it but that was cool with me. In B2daFuture the entire thing wouldn't make any sense without some context and understanding.

Never a bad time to watch Back to the Future.

In general I think 80s movies hold up better than 80s music. A few not mentioned:

The Shining

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Pee Wee's Big Adventure

The problem with movies today is analagous to the problem with music in the 80's, imo. Too much reliance on technology. The overuse of CGI in movies today is the same as the overuse of synthetic instruments in 80's music.

It's why some people think Inception was a great movie because it had dazzling visuals. Never mind the thin story. In the 80's movies we got a lot of great, original stories. Sure, we still had synth-heavy soundtracks by one of the Jarre brothers or Jan Hammer, but they were solid stories. Not endless remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels like we get now. And the CGI has to be more elaborate and over the top than in the last movie every time.

There was good music in the 80's but mostly it was superficial and shallow. Because of MTV it was as important to look good as it was to sound good or play well. Synth-heavy 80's music died when a bunch of bands from Seattle playing real guitars and real drums got popular. We need the same thing to happen in cinema.

Of course pop music is dominated by AutoTune these days so maybe it's all ultimately a lost cause.

just a heads up...the lost boys is now available on netflix.

it's not my favorite, but there are a ton of 80s "actors" and pop culture references in that flick. i feel a bit bad about it, but laughing at the coreys (especially haim), is one of the best aspects of tlb.

thou shall not fall...

There's a whole bunch of stranger things nonsense going on in this thread.  Seriously take off the nostalgia glasses for a moment and try to think of these movies critically. The same people complaining about formulaic movies today are the ones praising the 80's for originality, literally the decade where the blockbuster formula was established. What you liked at age 12 is not a valid measure of greatness.  The fake processed plastic decade produced plenty of pop culture but little in the way of lasting art.

on the old board, i started a thread several years ago listing 100 comedies from the 80's, saying i didn't think any decade could come close to matching it.  here is the list:

what is it about the 1980's? maybe it was just when i grew up, but there are just so many great, classic comedies through the decade. this is my own list, in chronological order. and it was fucking hard to get this list down to 100 (i even cheated a little by grouping sequels in with the originals). and i left out movies like goonies, back to the future, stand by me, working girl, heathers, lucas, that are great, but might not technically be comedies.

i can only imagine no other decade has this type of list:

blues brothers
caddyshack
airplane
seems like old times
midnight madness
stripes
history of the world part I
the cannonball run 1 and 2
arthur
tootsie

Michael Knight's favorite movie is The English Patient.
That movie sucked and wrong decade, the best 2 movies from the 80's are Raging Bull and Do the Right Thing. That's not to say I don't enjoy watching Die Hard and Raiders of the Lost Ark and think they are great movies, but Porky's and police academy give me a fucking break. I'm sure in 20 years someone on surly will be waxing nostalgic about the merits of American Pie and Eurotrip.

You answered your question in the 2nd sentence, it's because of when you grew up.
