Oh My God Maybe this is pandemic is going to be my reward for being a Democrat in Alabama all these years. Spent my day at work at the hospital in emergency meetings about the state’s response and it’s a shitshow. I can’t say much about the details but the state health department is divided between political hacks following Trump’s lead and the people with actual medical degrees who don’t care about contradicting the dumbass politicians in this state afraid to contradict Trump. So on my way home, I stopped at a Dollar General to get some Diet Cokes (shut up, they sell the six pack of bottles there cheap) and got in a line of about 15 people. Of those 15, there were 9-10 people with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, etc. These were all either black folks, Hispanic folks, or women. The other 5 or so in line were white dudes. All having a loud conversation with one of the cashiers making fun of everyone else for freaking out and getting a duped by the “librul media” etc- all the Trumpian talking points. Everyone with 50 rolls of TP just stayed silent. The 30 something incel white dude cashier with 80s metal hair and giant gauges in his ears was loudly proclaiming with all the confidence of a Ivy League educated physician that “The coronavirus is 12 years old, it’s been listed on the back of Lysol cans for years and Americans have a less than one percent chance of getting it because our genes are better.” I swear to god, it took all I had not to absolutely lose it and scream in his face. I walked out with a black woman in her 50s and I muttered under my breath “Morons. They’ll be the first ones bitching about the healthcare system when their dumbasses catch it.” She looked over at me and said “I ain’t gonna lose no sleep over six dead honkies. Have a blessed day!” To quote Imogene from season two of “Designing Women”, “As far as I’m concerned this disease has got one thing going for it, it’s killing all the right people.”36 points

no offense but you are quite clearly missing the point about all of this. the common flu doesn't kill 5k a month. most of the deaths happen between October and Feb (but can run through April/May in some years) - so last year this was much closer to 10k / month during flu seasons focusing on the current numbers is the wrong way to do it. from Sept 2018 to May 2019 there were more than 1.145 million flu tests conducted. currently in the United States we have tested about 8500 people. the R0 for coronavirus is higher, meaning it infects more people. the CFR for coronavirus is unknown - the flu is generally around 0.1% - last year it was estimated that 42.9 million people got the flu in some way or shape, so the CFR was 0.14% (about 61,200 died) if those numbers hold at all with a (conservative) CFR of 0.2% for coronavirus this would be 85,800 deaths on 42.9 million infections. the issue is we know the flu is seasonal. a vaccination exists. protocols for dealing with flu patients exist, along with best practices for it. we do not know if coronavirus is seasonal (it may not be), there is no vaccination (helping to limit the total deaths), there is no best practice for handling those who are sick (also helping to limit the total deaths), it is much more intense and the patients that are hospitalized have a higher acuity (requiring both a smaller nurse:patient ratio and longer stays - meaning that fewer beds are opening up) this shit isn't the flu and a comparison across the board is terrible. Google isn't sending home it's 100k employees for the flu. they aren't cancelling SXSW or E3 for the flu. South Korea isn't testing 10k / day for the flu. china isn't putting ~75m on lockdown for the flu. italy and israel aren't cratering their tourism industries for the flu. they aren't making the VP a task force leader for the flu. people don't isolate for 14 days for the flu. the market doesn't crash because of the flu. this is not the flu in any way/shape or form. the reactions to it aren't the same, the preparedness isn't the same, the requirements or burden on the healthcare system isn't the same and the "worst case" is significantly worse than the flu. we know what the flu is - both socially and medically. this isn't it. stop comparing this to the flu.20 points

What the hell just happened at the end of the hearing? They left? Also - And listen up, you fucking snowflakes. I'm not "Cloak Rooming" this thread. We have government for shit like this. A competent and highly coordinated Federal response will literally make a life or death difference for 100's of thousands of people. Sorry if that hurts your fee fee.18 points

Essential? Essential to fucking dying, maybe. I realize whom I am addressing here, but this is a fucking Futureman level troll post or you're one of the dumbest motherfuckers this side of RollLeft. You know, to many people, music is their religion. It helps depressed people grasp onto things in an unhappy life. Other people are obsessed with sporting events. You know, for their sake we should actually not cancel the rodeo, or sporting events, or any other important gatherings because they matter so much to many. Fuck it, young people are less at risk, they should be able to live their lives and go to shows, fuck everyone else they could infect, right? Do you think it's suspended because they're fucking petri dishes for things like a fucking virus? Shaking hands, sharing a communal wine cup. It's a cruise ship for the faithful. God can still hear you pray from home, dumbfuck.12 points

I was here before the Lombardy lockdown, and was watching CNN when they declared the nationwide lockdown and my phone exploded. It's not different than you would expect. Italy is an economic and social disaster. All of the locals I've talked to hate the economy. There is no economic opportunity, so my area feels like a small Texas town where all the young people left. Rush hour is a little lighter than before, but I was at a grocery store yesterday and it was a pretty normal looking crowd. There is a piece of paper that you're supposed to have with you when you're out. You list your reason for being out, there are several like going to work or going home. But as best I can tell, checkpoints are only on the autostradas. They shut down the football games and other events natiowide last week I think. Rome is probably pretty empty, as is I expect Firenze, and the Milan Duomo shots that the BBC has been doing are pretty stark. Tourism is probably their biggest industry. Italy is dominated by small and family businesses. So the complete shutdown is going to kill these folks. I talked to the guy at my hotel and he said his wife just got 15 days off unpaid from work. She has some sort of sales job and there were no customers. I've never really wished I spoke italian, but I would kill for a translation of italian news right now. Gotta be amazing to watch. I guess what's really striking is the reactions of people I've talked to. Some of them are freaking out. They're very polite, but they don't realize how little impact the disease has on the young and healthy. I am at very, very little risk, for example. For anyone who still thinks that police or military will ride to the rescue, that is certainly not the case here. People are largely left to their own devices. I really haven't seen police at all out in public. I mean, I see them sitting in their cars doing nothing, as usual I suppose. Banks are open, restaurants are open, hotels are open, trains and airports are open. I googled, tourism is 10% of the Italian economy. The original idea of just ring fencing the virus was stupid. But the social distancing thing is likely to be fairly successful. So let's say it works and Italy calms down. How long can you last with the majority of your population sitting at home, probably out of work? If they really try and ban being in public, won't crime start to increase at some point? When do people run out of money and start to get hungry? Few people do like I did, and store up supplies. You'll eventually get to social mayhem, and the quarantine has to end. But there will still be a reservoir of virus (third world countries), so you're back to a panic again. The goal is herd immunity. You WANT the healthy people to get it, and become immune. You want the risky people to isolate. Alternatively, you can vaccinate the public, but that vaccine doesn't exist yet. After a month or two you may be able to ramp up purel and surgical mask production. If everyone wears a mask, that measure alone is effective at stopping the spread. Allegedly. So I think everything shuts down for a while, the kids get out of school in a couple months etc. Maybe we have some solutions by then. And I expect the worst health outcomes might be avoided. And that leaves the financial outcomes. America will bounce back, because we were already growing. Europe, Italy especially, is in long term decline. This will accelerate that economic decline, and the social and political changes that come along with it. It's another leg down economically, they're already down around 10% from 2008. Just turning up the temperature on the pressure cooker. And that's the good outcome. But really, who the fuck knows.12 points

college professor for 8 years here. I'll chime in for a bit First off, taking online classes doesn't equal cheaper tuition. With that said, this is not a good thing for colleges and universities for many reasons. I'll try to outline a few below: - Online success rates are terrible. It's bad because students don't know how to take online classes. There are also students who take face-to-face classes specifically because they aren't successful with online, they can't do online, or their learning style doesn't match with online learning. - You can't just make a face-to-face class an online class halfway into the semester. That's just not how it works, especially if you didn't prep back in December for a spring semester online class. Also of note--yes, there are professors who never teach online because they themselves are BAD at it. I'm already getting emails from colleagues about what sites to use for online learning besides our LMS, and our college hasn't even announced anything--yet. - Shutting down a college/university means there will be percentages of students who have no places to sleep, no food to eat, and no ability to do the work for the class the administrators just made the professor put online because they have either poor internet, no internet access (besides the university), or no device other than their phone. And with their phone, they rely on WiFi. So yeah, it's been an interesting week on Academic Twitter as people all over the country are giving ideas and suggestions because throwing an entire university into online learning for a few weeks/months isn't as easy as 6-7 figure admniistrators believe it is.11 points

this shit is not the flu. stop comparing it to the flu, it's a terrible comparison. at minimum when comparing the two coronavirus has a higher R0 and a higher CFR (no matter where it ends up, it's likely to be higher than flu) add in that there is no vaccination, well defined hospital protocol in place, that coronavirus requires more PPE and that the coronavirus requires additional healthcare resources (vents, rooms, etc) STOP COMPARING CORONAVIRUS TO THE FLU.10 points

From earlier this evening... My father in law lost his cell phone on the golf course this afternoon. It was raining so we didn’t have much hope it would still be working but he shares the location with his wife so i gave it the old college try and went out there to look for it (he’s older and we weren’t confident he would have any success). I asked my wife to start calling it when I was close to the gps location in the unlikely event it still worked. Luckily, it did. Was able to find it from the ringer noise and answered the phone when I picked it up. Me (on my FIL’s phone): Hey My wife: Hey. Any luck?10 points

Trump thinks life is his own personal Truman show. Someone else is pulling the levers behind the scenes and shit will always work out alright as long as he plays the part of the Developer, the Billionaire, the President. He doesn’t have to actually DO anything. That’s what other people are for. He just has to show up, play make-believe, and take all the credit. It’s terrifying and perversely hilarious that the greatest nation in human history, at the apex of its power, elected such a clownish fraud as our leader.9 points

Again, people who have no clue spreading misinformation. The kids carry the fucking virus, they just don't by and large (though not 100%) develop the illness, especially severe cases. But morons will hear her and others like her say that shit and think HEY SHE'S A NURSE and that she knows shit from dick. Yes, this random nurse knows more than 95+% of all epidemiologists, virologists, the WHO, the CDC, Dr. Fauci, all the national and local governments who are making decisions. Not directed at you Parliament, just annoyed how many unnecessary deaths the stupid and uninformed will cause.9 points

Trump and his team are scared shitless. Trump is an impeached president because he tried to kneecap Biden. The right and trump have been defending Bernie. Joe Biden is a terrible candidate for Trump and those around trump know it. Biden + recession + pandemic mismanagement + 2019 Ukraine + 2016 Russian collusion + whatever other bombs drop (Saudi transcripts, Deutsche bank, tax returns, irs whistleblower) could all lead to flipping the Senate. That is terribly important. Removing roadblock Mitch has to happen before any meaningful legislation will pass.9 points
