  1. Our grandfathers were called to go to fucking war. You are being asked to sit on your fucking couch and digest a constant stream of netflix while we figure out a vax of antibody to bridge this shit in near term. Suck it up.

  2. sitting on the back porch tending my smoker filled with 12 chicken quarters, a 6 lbs. Boston butt, 12 links of Zummo sausages (SE Texas...holla!) and big Coho filet going on when i pull the chickens. the wife is finishing up cleaning the rest of the house we didn’t finish yesterday. she has surgery Thursday, but we’re done shopping and prepping and my smoking means i get to feed and tend to her like a good man ought to. we’ve stayed at home, followed the rules, and are enjoying the time together and don’t miss the chaos of commerce and consumerism one iota. we’ve had the TV off all day and Spotify filling in the gaps. we’ve even danced together a little, truth be told. there’s a lot to be said for slowing down. my old theology professor at Duke used to emphasize how important it was to take time for the trivial...be intentional about enjoying the little things in life: the smell of post oak wafting over meat, the sight of bluebonnets just now showing up, really seeing and connecting with your loved ones. all of this cannot be stolen by that jackass and his minions in the seat of power. they can collectively fuck themselves. today, i’m happy. today has meaning. today is a good day. i hope you all enjoy the same.

  3. This may have already been posted, but sharing here in case it hasn't been. It's good. It's posted publicly on FB by an emergency physician in Dallas (Cara Norvell, you can look her up and she has posted subsequent things):

  5. I went golfing today and got day drunk. I’m working on my second drunk of the day in the spa before I go to bed. I’ve read that anything 70% of alcohol kills the virus so I’m trying to get my BAC up to that level so I’m safe.

  6. Gen X being the only grown-ups in the room has been the case for a while now. About a year ago, I had enough of my parents insisting they would only vote against Trump in 2020 if the Democrats run a candidate that checks all the Republican boxes. I ended up yelling at them that I feel like I now have two sets of children: my actual children and my spoiled, crybaby parents. No doubt I’m not the only one who feels that way.

  7. I do not believe in everything below. I will elaborate later (cross posting from markets thread). Conclusions of Goldman Sachs Investee call where 1,500 companies dialed in. The key economic takeaways were: 50% of Americans will contract the virus (150m people) as it's very communicable. This is on a par with the common cold (Rhinovirus) of which there are about 200 strains and which the majority of Americans will get 2-4 per year. 70% of Germany will contract it (58M people). This is the next most relevant industrial economy to be effected. Peak-virus is expected over the next eight weeks, declining thereafter. The virus appears to be concentrated in a band between 30-50 degrees north latitude, meaning that like the common cold and flu, it prefers cold weather. The coming summer in the northern hemisphere should help. This is to say that the virus is likely seasonal. Of those impacted 80% will be early-stage, 15% mid-stage and 5% critical-stage. Early-stage symptoms are like the common cold and mid-stage symptoms are like the flu; these are stay at home for two weeks and rest. 5% will be critical and highly weighted towards the elderly. Mortality rate on average of up to 2%, heavily weight towards the elderly and immunocompromised; meaning up to 3m people (150m*.02). In the US about 3m/yr die mostly due to old age and disease, those two being highly correlated (as a percent very few from accidents). There will be significant overlap, so this does not mean 3m new deaths from the virus, it means elderly people dying sooner due to respiratory issues. This may however stress the healthcare system. There is a debate as to how to address the virus pre-vaccine. The US is tending towards quarantine. The UK is tending towards allowing it to spread so that the population can develop a natural immunity. Quarantine is likely to be ineffective and result in significant economic damage but will slow the rate of transmission giving the healthcare system more time to deal with the case load. China’s economy has been largely impacted which has affected raw materials and the global supply chain. It may take up to six months for it to recover. Global GDP growth rate will be the lowest in 30 years at around 2%. S&P 500 will see a negative growth rate of -15% to -20% for 2020 overall. There will be economic damage from the virus itself, but the real damage is driven mostly by market psychology. Viruses have been with us forever. Stock markets should fully recover in the 2nd half of the year. In the past week there has been a conflating of the impact of the virus with the developing oil price war between KSA and Russia. While reduced energy prices are generally good for industrial economies, the US is now a large energy exporter, so there has been a negative impact on the valuation of the domestic energy sector. This will continue for some time as the Russians are attempting to economically squeeze the American shale producers and the Saudi’s are caught in the middle and do not want to further cede market share to Russia or the US. Technically the market generally has been looking for a reason to reset after the longest bull market in history. There is NO systemic risk. No one is even talking about that. Governments are intervening in the markets to stabilize them, and the private banking sector is very well capitalized. It feels more like ‪9/11‬ than it does like 2008.

  9. This. If enough of us formally ignore him and other trolls, you’ll stop seeing his posts directly and no one will quote him. Voila! It’s like Zavala disappeared. Think of it as social distancing from the stupidity virus.

  10. Assisted with a group sending suggestions to the governor to implement as part of the state of emergency (certain statute suspensions and the like). Some serious shit. I suspect we’re going to see a lot more stuff coming. Also, was talking to my daughter, who’s doing....ok....but is very bored, and is starting to get a little freaked because some of her friends are heading home. In our conversation, I shared with her that I think the recovery from this is going to take 3-5 years. It’s going to have to be a global effort, and the interesting thing is, she’ll graduate from college in the middle of it. There’s a chance that she’ll end up working in a field that is part of that effort. We are living through a pivotal point in history. Going through this is shit. But we’ll see each other on the other side, and we’ll have work to do when we get there.

  12. May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options.May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go.May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.As fear grips our country, let us choose love.During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.Amen.

  16. Seriously, Gen Xers are having to manage parents who think they’re bulletproof and kids who just young and dumb and think they’re immune. We’ve been consistently ignored our entire lives but our early diet of an apocalypse around every corner and our natural misanthropy has prepared us for this. And as always -

  19. Ten years ago I woulda loved this...stay home for two weeks drinking, playing movies and video games, and avoiding people would be heaven. Now, we are trying to find ways to avoid killing the kids...particularly the 3yo daughter...the 6yo boy is pretty self sufficient and easy going but my 3yo is already on her third meltdown today. The thought of 14+ more days like this has my blood pressure rising.

  20. Looking for bright spots like all of us. Spending time with my kids, one of whom is in college, has and will continue to be great. I worked too much when they were younger and it’s nice to be able to spend some serious quality time with them.

  21. Picking up my plywood right now to board up my windows and doors. Thanks to this thread, I have been ahead of this as much as I possibly can be. As a bar owner, this is very difficult. I have taken drastic ass measures these last few weeks to try to keep my patrons safe. See list below . I am certain I will not be open in the end of this week. And have been prepared for it, as much as possible, mostly because of this thread started buying extra bleach/sanitizer/hand wipes/every extra of Everest cleaning product back in February. Not hurting just enough stock to accommodate my bar. I have been lysoling and bleaching the fuck out of my bar for the last three weeks.I’m talking every surface anything anybody touches, pool cues, mouse for the sweepstakes games, doorknobs, any handles, backs if seats, every goddamn thing I could think of that people touch. (I realized yesterday I had forgotten the goddamn pens ) Switch to plastic instead of glassware prevent spreading. Several other things. Bars and restaurants are usually pretty strict on their hygiene anyway. I upped cleaning mine because of the virus and hopes are not being Ground Zero in Jarrell That being said, nobody here gives a fuck. truly, I’ve been told by every fucking customer that comes in here that I am over reacting, and being ridiculous. It’s just a fucking cold they say. The denial is ridiculous! I embrace the quarantine now. As I was dreading it two weeks prior, I want it to happen sooner than later It will kill me financially. I think I have a program in place to recover. Either way it’s going to happen Also, people stole my sanitizer from my restrooms. Two huge bottles gone

  28. It's pretty simple. We need a National Health Security entity like Homeland or Defense, funded to the tune of 10-15% of the federal budget, with hundreds of thousands of beds and ventialtors, billions of healthcare hardware, sitting unused but ready to go at former military bases with maintained runways spread around the country. In 2019 the defense budget was $686B. We need to take $100B of that and build/maintain the permanent infrastructure to wage war on health threats to NATIONAL SECURITY.
