  1. Everyone's answer to the question of "Am I in favor of the death penalty?" should be the same as the answer to the question of "Would I feel really good about being tried by a Williamson County jury for a capital crime I did not commit?"

  2. Trump needs to be put on trial. His family needs to be put on trial. All the dirty laundry of his administration needs to be aired out. Bill Barr needs to be put on trial. Those who caged kids and set up that policy need to be put on trial. It will be a hard slog. People will resist and blame politics / partisanship. But what is the alternative? If he is not at least tried then it’s just open season for the next guy who is smarter. I keep thinking back to 2008/2009 and the financial crisis. No one was brought to justice/ tried for that shit. We got Occupy Wall-street and the tea party as a result. People were angry. No one got their pounds of flesh and that anger was corrupted and it ultimately resulted IN Trump being elected. So if we don’t deal with Trump, then his cancer will metastasize more throughout his supporters. It will grow and grow while being fed by foreign actors via the internet. It will grow and shape a generation of marginalized whites in the Midwest and the south. The west’s militias will feed off of what Trump represents. Trump 2.0 will be worse. Tea Party 2.0 will be worse. Trumpism and right wing populist authoritarianism on January 21 will be at its weakest point in the last 4 years. it must be strangled to death with an onslaught of actionable and prosecutable offenses. The fever will grow worse and worse as his supporters will resist, but ultimately the fever must be broken if we are to survive as a country. If we don’t, then we’re in for a world of hurt.

  9. Letting another Republican off the hook for crimes, especially one that has actively damaged the country, demonstrated zero remorse, and is going out kicking and screaming as he tries to undermine/rig our election process, is a terrible move. No one wants to be associated with a loser and it is necessary to bring it all to light. If this is handled correctly, in 10 years there will be 50 million "Gary Johnson voters." Trump and his gang need to face charges and do time for the crimes they committed. Doing anything less than prosecuting them will only demonstrate there is no law and order and that the Constitution is just a wall decoration and the oath taken by men, women, and children across this land are just empty words.

  10. Yup. Engraining the principle that presidents don't go to jail is providing a roadmap for authoritarians.

  13. Damn, when you put it that way, it really delivers the message in a different and more compelling way than the last 100 posts in which you've expressed the same sentiment. Maybe if you rephrase the same thing on every new page of this thread it'll convert some of the others.

  16. The fun and whole point of this thread is centered entirely on speculating about the (albeit very unlikely, some would say zero) possibility that Urban finds his way to UT. The thread would literally would not exist if everyone was, like you, informed and not ignorant and therefore believed there is without a doubt literally zero chance of it happening and not even entertaining to discuss. Maybe go start a "Urban is not coming here, you morons" thread and spend time in there listening to either crickets or your own curated echo chamber of intellectuals while lubing up your turd cutter. And since we're idiots but not hypocrites, you'll be totally justified giving grief to anyone that wanders in your thread to scream -- "It COULD happen and you're all dumbasses for only talking about how/why it's not going to" -- you know, because those people would kind of be defeating the purpose / running contrary to the purpose of your super fun thread. TL; DR: You've made your position known countless times. It's noted, no one cares and reiterating it every time you have a bowel movement with Tapa in hand contributes nothing to the discussion or purpose of the thread. And you don't know shit about what is going to actually happen here, none of us do. It's all speculation and the odds being in favor of your prediction don't change that.

  17. The media should be way past respectful engagement. Americans are dying, the President is trying to undermine a democratic election, sow doubt in democratic institutions, burn the government down on the way out. The media should be WAY harsher, but the left would rather say respectfully "please stop" as the right sets their house on fire.

  21. Seems to me that the Dem's "let the process work itself out" approach is nearing the end of its utility. What if they took a page from the Trump playbook? Start accusing Trump of various crimes, start a "lock him up" campaign on social media, and start blasting out information about sedition and treason for all involved. Threaten Emily Murphy with federal crimes. File criminal action against Trump's lawyers, including Giuliani, for frivolous lawsuits and contempt of court. Start an information campaign that Trump is only in it to avoid prosecution and to drum up cash for his own TV deal. Link the Republican super-spreader events are linked to 1257 confirmed deaths (I just made that number up, but who cares). Blast out photos of trump as tired and sad. Go on the offensive.

  22. Good post, and don't disagree. I think she followed the law here, and don't fault her decision for that. She is obligated to follow the law. I'm just flagging the strong possibility that her "I'm a judge, and I follow and apply the law regardless of my personal religious beliefs" bit may flip to "I am obligated to follow my faith, and how dare you question my choice -- which is sacred and inviolable and even criticizing me is anti-religion" when an abortion case comes up. My problem is the American (and, you know, islamofascist, if you're looking for an analog) tendency to use "faith" as a shield and a sword to do what what they want, and claim immunity from criticism or sanction because "how dare you tread on my religious beliefs!" I actually have incredible respect for the RCC position on both abortion and the death penalty. They are morally consistent: they believe that 1) a human life is involved in both events, and 2) only God has the power to give or take human life. There are members and leaders in the church, with whom I may disagree politically, who I nonetheless respect morally on this matter because of the courage of their logical and moral consistency. These also happen to be the same people who do not couch abortion in terms of "bad choices" by women, etc. -- instead, they are there to offer support, love, and a path to adoption (I've seen it in action multiple times, from the perspective of the pregnant woman and the adopting family -- remember, I went to Catholic school for 12 years). Nothing but respect. I just see too many Americans, almost entirely "conservatives," who now use "faith" as a shield to do what they want, and claim not just immunity from criticism, but immunity from an equal application of the law itself. Fuck that.

  28. Unsurprisingly BT is 100 percent wrong on this. Hopefully Trump drops dead on my birthday next year making it a worldwide holiday but if he doesn’t, he needs to be criminally prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Where that leads is unknown but it has to happen. What he has done and what he is doing and will do in the future must not be tolerated. He is among the biggest pieces of shit in world history, has committed multiple felonies and he needs to be made an example of so this shit doesn’t happen again. And Fuck his rube dipshit supporters. Fuck their feelings. They can all fuck around and find out. This bullshit needs to end now.
