There have been a lot of negatives on this board about CDC during the last year. I wanted Urban as badly as the next guy but I don't lay our inability to attract him at CDC's feet. If you just ignore the rhetoric and look at the results since the first of the year, he's doing a pretty damn good job. No, he's not perfect but the AD at Texas is a damn complicated job and he's handling it.15 points

Shaka is gone without much fuss. Sark got me ready to run through a wall. And Horns are pounding the Sooners into the dirt on the diamond. Ain't life grand.14 points

I was giving an exam last semester via zoom and students were sending me private zoom message if they had a question. Them: "Prof, does question #2 refer to year 1 or year 2." Me: "I don't know - let me look and get back to you." One student (hottie, probably one of your daughters) asked me: "Can I get up to go to the bathroom?" I told her: Sure. Another student asked an exam question. I replied: "Let me look." Except I didn't realize zoom automatically defaults the message back to the last recipient unless I click on the new recipient's name. So the convo to the hottie looked like this to her: " Can I go to the bathroom?" Me: "Yes. Let me look." Oops.14 points

i actually agree with everything you said after this, but this part isn't true. i really wish that i could expound more, but i can't do so without outing/doxxing the former players who've told me some stories about Shaka. the bottom line is this (and i've alluded to this before)- i know for a fact that Shaka, who does represent the university well and who puts up a pretty great public image, has a nasty habit of playing mind games with/freezing out guys who aren't "his guys". whether it's a player he inherited, or a player who for whatever reason found himself at odds with Shaka, coach Smart has treated some of his players in some seriously immature and at times downright fucked up ways. like, you'd be upset and angry and like, "ok, fuck Shaka Smart" if you knew what i know. again, this is such lame shit for me to be posting; i know that. i wish i could get more specific, but i can't. here is something i can say though- during the entire six years that Shaka was here, how many of his starters were ever demoted or benched, and how many of his bench players ever *earned* a larger role? we all know that these things rarely happened during Shaka's time as HC here, and that is emblematic of what i'm talking about. if you're one of Shaka's guys, what can you do to get benched? to lose minutes? to have your role reduced? unfortunately, the only answer (which is "cross Shaka Smart") has nothing to do with on-court performance. his guys are his guys, and the other guys don't matter. Jordan Barnett and James Banks? Shaka had no use for them; G Tech and Mizzou were very happy to take them off his hands. Prince Ibeh? gets no PT until Cam breaks his foot. Turns out to be the Big XII DPOY. Royce Hamm and Brock Cunningham? these dudes couldn't even get meaningful run in November/December games, and then all they did was save Shaka's job when injuries forced him to play them during the stretch run of Big XII play. Demarcus Holland and Kendal Yancy? Holland went from the team captain, senior leader, first-in/last-out, Big XII all-defense team member to being demoted and actually sat out of games that he was healthy for. Yancy rode the pine on our 11 win team until Shaka said "fuck it" and played him and it turned out that he was one of our more steady, calm, and consistent players. Greg Brown gets upset with something and, as sometimes happens with teenagers, needs to be calmed down. the result? he plays a total of 6 minutes vs ACU in a game where they outrebound us on the offensive glass 18-5. Matt Coleman could have taken three consecutive shots from half court and not been punished at all, but GB III needs to be taught some lesson for being upset with Shaka, in the most important game of Shaka's career no less. meanwhile, Ramey and Jones will pull up from 23 feet with 25 seconds left on the shot clock with Texas down by 7 with 2:30 left and it doesn't move Shaka's needle. Matt Coleman can *disappear* for an entire half or more, and there will be no discernible amount of coaching, benching, teaching, nothing from Shaka. Matt will just play his standard 35 minutes and he'll either figure it out at some point or he won't. Ramey can aimlessly drive, leave his feet, take a bad shot/turn the ball over three times in five possessions, and Shaka doesn't notice. meanwhile Royce Hamm breathes wrong and he's out of the mix. again, i seriously wish that i could tell specific stories without doxxing people who trusted me with said stories, but i can't. all i can do is point to the above anecdotes and hope that y'all can connect the dots here with regards to Shaka being this "great man". if you're his guy, he's your mentor and role model. if you aren't, then the guy can be a total charlatan who fucks with your head and tries to gaslight you into submission. there are certainly worse guys out there- he's no Gregg Marshall- but he's not the guy he portrays himself to be, and i won't be rooting particularly hard for him moving forward.14 points

This is how fucked up all of this is: this is pretty much the only CR thread with no GRHorn or Donkey or Don Johnson or Johnny Sack, etc. playing the both sides card or trolling or telling everyone that they're overreacting and common sense voting reforms were needed. There's no defending any of this...doing so means you either you believe Trump's big voter fraud lie, and you're an absolute moron, or you're a racist and don't want so many people--particularly minorities--to vote. Or both. Even our Republican friends know to stay the fuck away.13 points

Yeah you might be. He didn’t drag it out, he didn’t force us to fire him and collect a fat check. No bad headlines about Texas firing him or any of that BS. You’re coming at this from the wrong angle. We parted ways in the best way possible for both us and him.11 points

I have another one, not involving me, but very curbish. Prof friend at another college moves into a new neighborhood. Apparently, the developer or neighborhood group put up these yellow bows on every tree, some sort of neighborhood pride thing. Friend tolerates it it for a week, but thinks it looks very schmaltzy so he tells the wife he's going to take it down. Wife tells him they are just proud of their neighborhood and it's quaint. One day, she's doing so yard work, and he's had enough, so he heads out with some scissors. Wife is talking to a guy walking his new puppy. As my friend is cutting down the bow, he overhears the guy talking about his son, Parker, with cerebral palsy. The guy asks if they have heard about the neighborhood fun run to raise money for Parker/cerebral palsy. In fact, that's what all these bows are for - he and his wife put them up. He hears this last part just after he cut the bow down, scissors in one hand, bow in the other. He makes awkward eye contact with the guy with just sort of a goofy bewildered expression on his face. My friend said at that moment he could hear the curb theme music cue up.10 points

Maybe it’s just my soft bigotry of low expectations for Texas Basketball, but I’m coming around to rolling the dice on Royal Ivey. Bring the player alumni base together, and possibly get in in the ground floor on the next real big thing. If he busts, then meh, it’s just basketball, we’ll try again with the next one. High reward and the risk just isn’t there personally for me. I don’t feel that this hire is as high stakes as it was after we fired Herman.9 points

Beleaguered tax payer who thinks every dollar who leaves his pocket is theft. Victim. Person who realizes actions for the common good can happen through government and realizes such things have a cost. Citizen Reading these posts gives me a clearer vision of what has changed about fiscal conservatives. I think the GOP (not Trumpist) by sloganeering about the failures of goverment and the waste of government (very real concerns) and then pushing their rhetoric to state the total failure of government (hyperbole used to enflame their dwindling masses) ended up abandoning citizenship almost altogether. Now it's rote dogma. It's rote dogma that has been focused, by the opinion leaders of the right, on programs for the poor or any nickel not somehow benefitting the constituency they most care about: the super elilte wealthy who fill their trough very generously. The left can surely be moved to overuse government and spend too much. The value of the right was their consideration of expanding government power and short/long term costs in balance with judging benefit to the country and its people. They destroyed the fulcrum. They now claim that any spending is bad while ensuring the constituency they most care about contributes less through tax and makes more through subsidy to their various holdings. The great unwashed who vote GOP (again, not Trumpist) are convinced that they benerfit as well from things like estate tax "reform" and safeguards against the horrors of universal healthcare (We already have the best doctors in the world produced by the system we have! No, of course I don't have access to them because they're too expensive! Wut?). I thank you both for your posts. Placed alongside each other, they proved thought provoking. I don't mean to pigeon hole either of you, particularly Lechuza whom I've not read before.9 points

I don't know if it is a generational thing or just a normal characteristic of most fanbases, but it has been well established that at least half of the Surly populace would make better ADs than CDC, all while coaching the football and men's basketball teams to multiple National Championships, curing COVID, solving the border crisis, and opening the best barbecue/Tex-Mex/burger joint in the world. It's science.9 points

yea you simply cannot ignore the shit storm he took over all the waste and fuckery left over from Deloss all the fuckery on the women's side to deal with all the turds of steve patterson stinking up the place the fact that Texas could not even find an AD after they found a way to flush patterson so they just had to get a temp guy (that did a hell of a job considering what he was handed and knowing he was not there for the long term) the fuckery going on with university presidents and the BOR the president that was suppose to calm the storm taking off to Emory not long after Del was hired the fact that all the bullshit above made Texas a very toxic place to work and coaches that were worth a fuck wanted none of it.....not to mention good coaches like the women's tennis coach were basically run off because they were pissed off about being dicked over on facilities the Bev Kearney shit still lingering around the resignation of Ashton out of the blue (or was it you have to wonder now) facilities that should have been top notch, but instead were simply the best that a lot of expensive turn polish could slap up to half ass back to just below the top 20% of facilities in whatever sport the challenges of a new arena and all the shit that comes with that being UT in Austin and Austin wanting to get shit for free and only being proactive about stupid ass shit football stajium expansion the interview for hiring an AD to Texas when Del was hired was basically.....we have a fuck load of cash, not much to show for it lately in terms of hardware, facilities, saved up cash, we have massively inflated overhead filled with dead wood that shit stirs things, a fuck load of expenses coming up, some coaches that might have to be fired including the major sports, lots of instability at all levels of the university administration, pissed off fans, facilities that need a ton of work, alumni and donors that write big checks and then do dumb ass shit in the press and come around shit stirring, and lots of big name coaches have taken a pass on taking a job here lately.....when can you start!8 points

It’s my first week at my current job and I’m still meeting people. My friend is talking to one of the forklift drivers and it’s noisy but as I’m walking up to them I ‘hear’ the driver say, “My wife (loud crash in warehouse) going on 10 years tomorrow.”. Thinking he is talking about their upcoming 10 year anniversary I say, “Oh, congratulations!”. My friends face goes blank & his jaw drops. The driver gives me a cockeyed look and says, “Congratulations?”. My friend is staring at me with his eyes wide open and I’m starting to get confused. I said, “Yeah, you said you & your wife are going on ten years tomorrow.”. His face expressionless he says, “No, she’s been gone 10 years tomorrow.”. there is an awkward silence which my friend breaks by saying, “Awwwkward.”. Even though it was an innocent mistake I still just wanted to crawl away.7 points

I don't really understand. Shaka was basketball Charlie Strong, but instead of losing to Kansas he lost to ACU which is arguably worse. Then he quit instead of getting fired to salvage whatever remains of his career. All this feel good bullshit is just that. Bullshit. I get it he was a nice guy, but maybe I'm jaded from talking to Derka too much.7 points

Woke up this morning in Dana Point, California. I have been here with my wife and daughter in law preparing to do a memorial service for my son who died in January. It has been a bittersweet visit to such a beautiful place, but thankfully, the zoom meetings in Ft Worth have been a lifeline to my answer as well as the many phone calls to those who truly care about me. I am grateful that I am sober today and will have the opportunity to speak to a large gathering of my friends about my son. I went to a surf shop yesterday to rent a wetsuit for the paddle out and scattering of his ashes. Three young locals working in the store were most helpful and when I told them why I needed the suit, they all embraced this Texas stranger and wished me comfort. I went to pay for the suit, and the kid behind the counter said no charge sir-go in peace. Such an unconditional random act of kindness was so touching to me that when I left the shop, I sat on a bench and cried while thanking God for my life today and my son's life without pain and suffering today. I'm constantly reminded by this program that we know only a little and that God will constantly reveal Himself-yesterday was just another example of that for which I will have a memory to treasure and share with the new guy who walks into the room for the first time without any idea of how to live life without alcohol. It's a beautiful day in California today thanks to the new pair of glasses I was given by the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.7 points

The great thing about HEB, and something you don't realize until you don't have one, is how Texas centric their products are. Their products are tailored to Texas' tastes, and meal plans. Yankee stores (Albertsons and Kroger) are rather bland and generic. There is a vast difference in their spice isle at HEB, packaged cheeses that are available, meat cuts, tortilla selection, and others. HEB has a strong South Texas and Mexican influence, along with Louisiana, fresh juices, and guacamole, a great seafood selection. They even own their own shrimping fleet on the Texas gulf coast. To me, they are the flagship company of what it means to be Texan. My first bill when HEB opened up in Granbury was over $1000, mainly restocking my depleted spice cabinet, and restocking on wine, and Texas beers. DFW is in for a real treat. CHIEF7 points

None of this off-the-court shit really matters IMO. He either wants the Texas job or not. If he does, there are remedies for all of the above concerns. It comes down to where he wants to coach men’s college basketball.6 points
