I cannot stress this enough for anyone who lives in Austin (although this really applies to pretty much everywhere at this point) BE SAFE. What this means is don't get on your motorcycles. Don't go out on your ATV. Don't get on your jetskis. Don't ride the little mini scooters. Don't get super wasted. Don't do dangerous drugs. Basically don't engage in reckless, dangerous, and stupid behavior. The level 1 trauma center for central Texas has no trauma beds for you right now, because we admitted a man who fell like 60ft (on purpose) at 4:00am this morning and he took up the last one because, in a real bummer for him, he survived the fall. Of course, one or two beds might open up, but maybe we should save those for someone who has a stroke or something, mmkay? Watch Ted Lasso, fuck your partner, smoke some pot, stay indoors. I was off of work for five days. I worked last night. The night before I had a girls' night with some friends who are also ICU nurses in Austin, and they warned me that things had really taken a turn since I left last on Saturday morning. And they were right. There is palpable despair in our ICUs, and especially in our MICU, which is our COVID ICU. Don't get me wrong, watching people die always sucks, and it was really shitty watching so many already-sick and elderly patients die with COVID last summer/winter, but the patients that we get up there now are younger, healthier, but they crash just the same. ALL INTUBATED PATIENTS IN OUR COVID ICU ARE UNVACCINATED And Delta makes it harder for us to get you off the vent. The things we learned over last year don't seem to work quite as well. So then you get the trach, the PEG, and if you don't die before then, your body basically just kind of starts to rot. I can go into much more detail if you're into that sort of thing. Just DM me. So get vaccinated. It will almost certainly keep that terrible stuff from happening, unless you are just a really unlucky son of a bitch. And it will really help your community's healthcare workers out. You are lucky we haven't all walked away from the job at this point. Shit is fucked. (I was directly exposed to COVID because of the aforementioned jumper patient. We didn't get his test results back until after admitting him to the ICU, and his vent circuit broke right in front of my face. So I've got that going for me)28 points

I persuaded a friend of mine to get the jab. She's 50. When I found out she hadn't been vaccinated, I asked her why. She responded "I already had Covid." "You did? You never told me that. When did you get it?" "I got it around Thanksgiving 2019. I was sick for days." "2019 or 2020?" "2019." "Were you in China or something?" "No. It was going around here before it became official." "Did you lose your sense of smell?" "No." "Did you lose your sense of taste?" "No." "Why do you think you had Covid?" "Because I was sick." This is what we're dealing with people.18 points

Who gives a fuck about what social media does? Medical treatments aren't developed on Facebook. They are developed in lab and clinical settlings, by professionals. You could silence all talk of chemotherapy cancer treatment on FB, it wouldn't make a lick of difference to the fact that 1) medical professionals are developing them, and 2) they are disseminating the proper treatment protocols for them and using them. And there's NO blocking of that. And by they way, the REASON that social media is blocking SOME of the invermectin talk is exactly what I pointed out: it is being touted as an alternative to a PROVEN method of reducing COVID cases/harm (vaccines). "Don't get vaccinated, invermectin cures COVID!" is a terrible, damaging, dangerous, and FALSE message. Shit, even if it HELPS with COVID recovery (like Tamiflu helps with the flu), it is not a replacement for prevention. Again, there's no blocking of discussion of actual, valid therapeutics. There's no blocking of studies on various potential therapeutics. Post a valid study of invermectin in a clinical setting, and I'll bet you dollars to donuts no major social media outlet will block that post.15 points

Only pushback is on therapeutics that don't appear to work after being subjected to study, and the aggy sending people in search of a cure to tractor supply for apple flavored horse dewormer. I was very hopeful when the early HCQ signals came out because the early results were compelling, although the studies had limitations that warranted further and more rigorous research. Shit man we were riding early pandemic and any hope for an easy parachute ride out sounded pretty fucking good. When well designed studies were completed...no matter what angle they took...pre-exposure prophy, post-exposure prophy, early treatment, late treatment....it failed to separate almost every time. The early signals needed to be followed up on, sadly ended up being a dead end. I wish that was not the case, but that's how the data shook out. Again, I was very hopeful that HCQ was going to be the silver bullet. Same with ivermectin at this point. I would love for it to work. I have yet to see compelling data. Here is the pre-release of results from the TOGETHER trial. If Ivermectin has an effect, its effect size is very small. I am not pushing back on therapeutics. One that I think has largely flown under the radar is fluvoxamine. Early results are positive, further studies are ongoing. Nobody is pushing back on therapeutics, and sure as shit not for some imaginary reasons about undermining vaccines EUAs. Finding an effective therapeutic would have ABSOLUTELY ZERO IMPACT on the vaccine EUAs. I am not sure where that nonsense came into the discussion.13 points

I converted one unvaxxed person in the 20-29 bracket today to a moderna vaccine appointment, so I feel like I accomplished something. Hope it wasnt too little too late.13 points

I wish I had words that could make it any better, or take away any of the trauma and pain you are going through. It kills me that y'all have to bear so much pain, when all you ever wanted to do was help people. Anyone who has been in a hospital, or had a relative in one, knows y'all are the glue that holds that place together and the only human thing about the hospital experience for many patients. You don't deserve this and must feel incredibly betrayed by society. It's shameful that y'all are being subjected to so much unnecessary abuse and trauma. The only thing I can tell you is, you're not alone. PTSD feels like you are, but you aren't. Never forget that, no matter how low you get. You matter to us. We are proud of you. We are grateful. Fuck the haters, you're a rock star.12 points

Chocolate chip cookies are safe as well. They’ve been around for a long time. There is as much level one evidence that chocolate chip cookies prevent and treat Covid 19 as there is for ivermectin. I think I’ll stick with the cookies11 points

Bob Slydell: Joseph Biden. Dom Portwood: Who's he? Bob Porter: You know, squirrely looking guy, mumbles a lot. Dom Portwood: Oh, yeah. Bob Slydell: Yeah, we can't actually find a record of him being the president. Bob Porter: I looked into it more deeply and I found that apparently what happened is that a pillow salesman said the other guy won and no one ever told him, but through some kind of glitch in the payroll department, he still gets a paycheck. Bob Slydell: So we just went ahead and fixed the glitch. Bill Lumbergh: Great. Dom Portwood: So um, Biden has been let go? Bob Slydell: Well just a second there, professor. We uh, we fixed the *glitch*. So he won't be receiving a paycheck anymore, so it will just work itself out naturally. Bob Porter: We always like to avoid confrontation, whenever possible. Problem solved from your end.10 points

Yeah, we're kind of fucked with these attitudes. Statesman: Brent Thompson of Buda has been struggling to breathe for more than a week. While his condition has started to improve, he remains at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Central Austin on a ventilator. Just days after Thompson tested positive for COVID-19 on July 27, he was hospitalized on Aug. 4 with low oxygen levels and diagnosed with COVID-pneumonia. Thompson on Thursday told the American-Statesman that since he was first hospitalized last week, he has been to four different hospitals because of understaffing. He said he has two doctors attending to him, and he gets a new nurse every 12 to 13 hours. Thompson, who is not vaccinated, said that he does not plan to get vaccinated after he is released from the hospital. He and his wife believe they contracted the virus while at an outdoor concert in late July. “I still won't take a shot just because, in the long run, yeah, it sucks to go through this, but I'm making it and I ain’t dead,” he said. “I’m not scared to go through pain of this instead of the fear of getting the shot. I’d rather fight it out and let God figure it out for me.”10 points

I’m not sure what pediatric hospital you’re referring to as having a bunch of individualized negative pressure rooms, but I work at one of the best pediatric hospitals in the world and the overwhelming majority of our PICU beds are an open concept floor plan. We have a whopping 5 negative pressure rooms9 points

This was posted by a friend of mine who is an ER doc in Austin "On a more serious note, to anyone who still cares, though from what I'm seeing, most people don't anymore, including my own friends and family.... I'm tired. Why? Bc almost every. Single. Case. Of covid I see now, is preventable. And it's exhausting fighting this fight with twice, nay, thrice, the cases and half the staff. Our hospital has been full for 2 months now. Everyday. And not just with covid. If you're in a car accident? There's no room for you. Having a heart attack? Hang out in the waiting room for 12 hours. We just cannot give people the care they need or deserve (covid or otherwise). Here's a list of the 100 % HEALTHY people I've admitted with covid recently and their reasons for not getting the vaccine. For the record, every single one expressed regret. (There were as many unhealthy admits) 40s yo going to the ICU: the vaccine was scary 50s yo EMT: didn't think covid was real 70s yo: don't want to 30s yo: dunno 50s yo: didn't ask before I intubated them 30s yo: haven't gotten around to it yet 50s yo: friend had a fever after, didn't want that 20s yo: didn't want to have sore arm and fever 40s yo: wasn't sure 50s yo: didn't get around to it 30s yo: never had the flu, didn't think I needed it Here's a list of the fully vaccinated folks I've admitted: 50s yo who's vaccine didn't work bc of immune system. Unvaccinated family member gave them covid. They died. Stay safe everyone, and please for the love of humanity, or your life, or family member, neighbor, whomever, get the shot. Signed, Your exhausted Healthcare worker"9 points
