One last bit on this. First, important to note that the only people who make ridiculous claims about the invincibility of their hardware and tech are the Russians. No serious analyst or practitioner would sit and tell you that Patriots are some sort of magic Iron Dome that can never fail. But when it comes time to see the stuff in action, the vatnik soup horde shrugs off all the blatant failures of Russian super tech to zero in on the one time a Western comes up short—-which everyone would tell you we knew would happen. Second, in US or Allied hands, the Patriot is part of a layered air defense that Ukraine can’t hope to deploy. As one example, no NATO foe is going to be allowed to leisurely fly MiG-31s up to the border to fire away and scoot. Our F-35s and F-22s will have a vote on that. Rough analogy, but we are kind of expecting the defensive backfield to save a touchdown while the DL and LBs watch from the bench. And— THEY’RE FUCKING DOING IT. Russia launched one of its most complex attacks with its best stuff to try and take out a Patriot system and the system is still on the battlefield. That— is a fucking win. Period.24 points

Why the fuck can't I take a call in a bedroom. It's a phone call. One of the only downsides to the Work from Home experience is that now nearly every single communication is on camera, whereas before the pandemic 95% of interactions occurred on a telephone or conference call. We don't need to be on camera for all this shit. I can take a phone call from my bedroom same as from my home office desk. Also your diatribe on professionalism is fucking hilarious given your appearance. Like I'm gonna take professionalism advice from someone who looks like "Jesus just got back from a tijuana meth and cheeseburger bender"22 points

Two points on that. 1) This is just a different version of the MAGAt response of "you calling me racist just makes me more racist." It is used to avoid ANY AND ALL accountability or work on the underlying issue (racism or, in this case, the fact that we are the most firearm-violent western country by far). 2) Maybe, just MAYBE, grasp the fact that the "fuck it, I'm done, just take them all away" response is natural human exasperation (and one I've been warning about as a gun owner who would like to keep his guns for years). Think of it this way: American gun owners are a toddler in the house with a new toy drum. They are banging on the drum when we're sleeping. Then, when we're on a work call. Then, when we're trying to have an adult conversation. We tell the toddler "look, you need to have consideration for others when you play your drum. You can play it in your room, with the door closed, or you can play it out on the porch. And you can't get up and play it after bed-time." Instead of saying "that seems fair," and following these rules....the American gun crowd is acting like a petulant defiant toddler. Every request to accept a reasonable restriction (keep the drum playing to your room) results in the toddler proudly marching into our home office while we're on a Zoom call, banging away at the drum as loudly as he can. And the exasperated, responsible adults in the room have had e-fucking-nough. They're turning to the toddler and saying "goddammit if you can't be responsible with that drum I'm going to take it away!" The toddler is being a dick. The toddler would be smart to accept some reasonable limitations that make him a cooperative and decent member of our collective household. Instead, ADULT AMERICAN GUN OWNERS are acting like toddlers. And yes, we're heading to a place where the result is going to be the same: the decent, but exasperated, adults in the room are going to take your drum/gun away. And that's it. That's it right there. Keep them out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them at all. No, no law is perfect. Yes, some people will find a way around it. But we also KNOW that things like age limits can be effective (the Uvalde shooter TRIED to acquire an AR before he was of-age; the law stopped it. Then, he reached the legal age, and got his guns). Seat belt laws and car safety standards haven't prevented ALL car crash deaths. But Jesus Christ, compare the rate of fatalities per million miles traveled: 1969: 5.04 deaths; 2019: 1.19. The knee-jerk response of a majority of the "pro-gun" crowd of "enforce the laws we already have! And if you ask for anything more, you're really just trying to take away my toy drum!" is going to end up being one of the most counter-productive approaches in American history. Because the steadfast, obstinate, "fuck you people" refusal to accept ANY new limitations on firearms transfer and ownership will eventually result in the very thing they claim to fear: the rest of the house is gonna take that drum away, smash it, and toss it in the trash. And the toddler will cry, outraged.....but he'll get zero sympathy because everyone else in the house is sick of his shit.17 points

Give the Russians some credit, they've worked long and hard to purchase the allegiance of the "de-escalation" faction. They have gotten their talking points spread across the political spectrum. As poorly as the Russians have fought on the ground, they've done a hell of a job influencing Western countries populace. I sometimes wonder if the US was celebrating winning the cold war in the 3rd quarter. Remember when the "commies" wanted to take over Korea? Vietnam? What was the US reaction? Now a european democracy is getting eaten and the old Soviets are getting the band back together and we are dithering on our fainting couch. We have a chance to have 1 of our 2 enemies/global competitors wreck themselves on our OLD/OBSOLETE military stock and somehow/someway a not insignificant portion of our leaders are against the idea?! Our Grandfathers are rolling in their graves right now. Yes we have paid handsomely for the weapons, BUT: Most of the equipment is old/outdated and we were paying to have it stored/exercised Patriots are not outdated (as far as I know) but is anyone really against protect civilians from indiscriminate bombing? The defense industry should be drooling at the contracts to replace the old stuff (how are they not howling for this?) It was all sunk cost anyways contracted/built/used/replaced... it's not like saved cash. An old plane costs a TON to keep airworthy, tanks and trucks the same to a lesser degree. The US is never going to use these assets unless we are in a long grinding war with a rival super power... wouldn't it be great if there was one fewer of them around? I'm even more pissy because I was down in Miami/Aventura yesterday and the fucking Russians are all over the place. Just living the good life, not a care in the world. Hopefully they are earlier dissidents who got their money out and fled (booked a flight) to the west, but that seems a bit naïve. In other news, it's now illegal for Chinese nationals to buy property in Florida, but the Russians are still welcomed with open arms. And we are still not sure about arms to Ukraine. FURK17 points

I work for a top 50 law firm in the U.S., don't turn my camera on for any meeting and work in my game room or on the couch. I give not one fuck that imma spent thousands on his set up for his precious Fortune 500 company job. Again, this thread has become the "this is how I do it, so this is how everyone else needs to do it" with a sprinkle of the self-employed bitching about WFH/remote work and middle managers swishing their Karen hair around about it.13 points

Fuck that shit. I can do every bit of my work remotely with fewer distractions. The only IT/Networking people that go into our offices right now are: 1. Lonely dorks that wander around and gossip/annoy other people because they have no lives outside of work. 2. Pathetic married guys who use the office to escape their wife/kids.13 points

Show your work. That is a typical gun nut BS talking point since I can remember. You invent it to fight the implementation of gun safety laws. “You say you are for drunk driving laws, but it is just a slippery slope to your true intent - keeping me from drinking beer in my garage…..look at this Facebook post from some Baptist wanting all drinking banned as proof!!”12 points

So because more people didn't die, we shouldn't discuss how a 12 year old had access to an AR (regardless if he was just in the car with the 20 year old carrying it around) and blew away a sonic employee who was stopping someone from pissing all over restaurant property? You're right, there's nothing worth discussing here, we should delete the thread. At the end of the day, the 20 year old probably acquired the gun legally. And he thought it was fine to tote it around in the car with a 12 year old. In such a fucked up society with fucked up people, well, maybe we should make it more difficult for people to get ARs. Maybe just make them expensive as fuck. But yeah, we shouldn't discuss it because it wasn't a mass shooting. The whole 12 year old with an AR aspect doesn't make it worth analyzing at all.10 points

While it is only a rough comparison, Bakhmut does somewhat compare to a battle with which we are all familiar: the Alamo. There was no good reason for Travis to disobey orders and stay in the Alamo, just as it seems that there was no real strategic need for Ukraine to stay in Bakhmut. Santa Anna could have left a small force to keep the Texians fixed in the Alamo, and Russia could have done the same with Bakhmut. Taking the Alamo did not give Santa Anna any strategic gain other than the boast that he had taken it and slain all of the defenders, just as taking Bakhmut gives Russia no strategic gain other than taking it in a brutal fashion as an example of why to not resist Russia. Santa Anna used his best troops to take the Alamo, taking high casualties and weakening his army materially, just as is happening to Russia's best troops in Bakhmut. Finally, just as "Remember The Alamo!" became a battle cry and inspiration for the Texians at San Jacinto, Bakhmut is now an example of Ukrainian resistance and determination in the face of superior numbers.10 points
