  1. Possibly off topic (at least this new course of dialogue), but I have some friends and former students who work as legal advocates for persons who've escaped human trafficking (Seattle has quite a bit, being a major port city to Asia). That persons are exploited sexually is tragically factual, the majority of persons trafficked are enslaved in roles that are more "labor" based- Domestic labor, agricultural work, sweatshop production. One of my colleagues often says that the focus on sexual exploitation is important, but it also provides a convenient distraction to the fact that all of us benefit from (in her language "are complicit in") the larger amount of human suffering due to our participation in an economy that emphasizes low consumer costs and high corporate profits over human dignity and thriving. It's a perfect connection to the modern GOP- Focus on sex, use "save the children" as a rallying cry (without meaningful actions), and ignore the things that might implicate and undercut their corporate donors. 2. I haven’t seen the clip myself, so someone should fact check this, but I heard that Ian Boyd asked Ewers, at Big 12 Media Day yesterday, if he felt like Worthy quit on the team during games last season. If he did that, credit to him for asking a non-softball question, I guess. It’s just another example of guys that cover UT sports not actually giving one fuck about casting UT in a positive light, though. I’ve always assumed the IT poster base was better than the other $9.95er bases, but apparently posters there clamor for Ian Boyd content. It is a dark, dark commentary that Surly is the Internet oasis for decently intelligent longhorn fans.

  3. I was in 6th grade when that came out, and in home room sat across from Brigit Allison, who had grown woman tits. I serenaded her with my adaptation of the lyrics to the hit song to the movie: “Every which way but loose/I want my wiener in your caboose” She was not impressed and told her older brother (an 8th grader), who beat me like a rented mule after school. Totally worth it….

  6. As for the impact of the Presidential Records Act on this prosecution, any argument that it mandates dismissal of the Indictment or forms a defense to the charges here borders on frivolous. The PRA is not a criminal statute, and in no way purports to address the retention of national security information. The Defendants are, of course, free to make whatever arguments they like for dismissal of the Indictment, and the Government will respond promptly. But they should not be permitted to gesture at a baseless legal argument, call it “novel,” and then claim that the Court will require an indefinite continuance in order to resolve it. Moreover, even if the Court were to conclude that these legal issues were novel, the Ac trequires more: the issues must be novel such that “it is unreasonable to expect adequate preparation for pretrial proceedings or for the trial itself within the time limits established by this section.” 18 U.S.C. § 3161(h)(7)(B)(ii). Defendants make no showing whatsoever on this score. No extensive review of discovery or classified information would be required to prepare briefs on these subjects. As with any pretrial dispositive motion, all that is necessary is the Indictment—which the Defendants have had for over a month. And in fact, Trump (including his current counsel) has already briefed in this Court a variation of this argument. See, e.g., No. 22-CV-81294-CANNON, ECF No. 171 (filed Nov. 8, 2022). The legal issues Defendants raise do not justify deviation from a speedy trial date, much less open-ended deferral of considering one. 💥💣🔥 That last is basically "what that guy just said is bullshit [and remember what happened the last time you bought his bullshit?]."

  23. Not a dog, but I don't know where else to put this. And it's not a cat, so it's going here... Long-time family member, Coco the Bearded Dragon is no more. We got Coco in summer 2006 for our 7-yo daughter; the book we got with her said that beardies could be expected to live 8-10 years, but that there were "unconfirmed reports of beardies living over 12 years." We figured that was perfect with daughter scheduled to go to college in 10 years; but yeah, daughter finished her Master's degree a year ago with Coco still plugging along. Daughter named her after Coco Crisp, who was her favorite baseball player at the time; Coco Crisp retired seven years ago. 20-yo family friend Caroline was at our house last month and mentioned that she had known Coco basically as long as she has memories. We all laughed at that, and then Caroline delivered the most perfect epitaph for Coco imaginable: "Y'all have had a lot of dogs, but there has always been Coco." And that's what Coco was to us -- not something with a big personality that we had a deep attachment to, like a dog, but just a daily part of our lives for 16+ years. A pretty indestructible part. In Wimberley, we had her tank tucked into a bookshelf where she had a view of nothing but the living room and the back of the bookcase. Daughter's friend Laurel brought over a picture of a bearded dragon and taped it to her tank "so that Coco had a friend to look at" and I still think about Laurel every time I see it. We only fed her iceberg lettuce first (which we later found out was about the least nutritious think we could have). We moved to San Marcos in 2019, and Coco got a new spot with windows all around. It took her a couple of months before she quit being terrified of seeing all the birds flying around. Greg Abbott tried to kill her in Feb '21 when the power went out and it was 30 degrees inside our house. I still remember waking up that morning -- wife asked if I'd go check on Coco and I said, "There's no way she's still alive," but she was. She had physically deteriorated pretty badly over the past couple of months, and hadn't really eaten all week, so with us going to Colorado tomorrow, we didn't feel like we could leave her with a house sitter, so I started calling vets to ask about euthanizing a reptile. FYI, they apparently do it basically the same way as cats/dogs. I took her to the vet this morning and I was pretty unemotional about it until I went to put her in the ground and saw how the amazing people at Wimberley Valley Vet Clinic had prepared her. So, thank you Coco for being a part of our lives for way longer than we had a right. We really will miss you.

  25. You keep saying "released to the streets." You know that even the most zealous prosecutions end up with defendants back on the streets at some point. Years ago, the Santa Monica City attorney made it their mission to eradicate homelessness and the accompanying blight. The SM CAs vigorously prosecuted the homeless under an illegal camping statute. A lot of them ended up taking the cases all the way to trial because they City Attorney's office wasn't interested in any offers that didn't include jail time. So, dozens of trials and hundreds of jurors later, the issue didn't change. Why? Because even throwing the book at them results in them being "released to the streets" at a later date. It's just a slower revolving door. The problem - as it always has been - is we are trying to use the criminal justice system to address: wealth inequality, mental health treatment, substance abuse treatment, and a severe housing crisis. So weird that it's not working to fix the issue. Oh well, better pump more money into law enforcement. Absent making being homeless a felony with years of prison time, prosecuting the homeless doesn't solve the issue. Should our laws regarding involuntary commitment change? Perhaps. Should we pump millions into MH care and treatment to identify and treat those prior to them ending up on the streets, half-clothed, screaming at the clouds? Probably. Should we have discussions about whether it's healthy to have housing be a primary vehicle for investment? I think so. The point being, it's going to take a lot more than just sending the brute squad out to clear the forest. None of that is to say that a city doesn't have an interest in prosecuting crimes committed while someone is homeless, but that also doesn't fix the issue. So there's a dirty, unclothed man yelling at people on a sidewalk. Obviously that's alarming and scary. If I'm a business owner, that's going to piss me off. If I live down the street from him, that's going to piss me off too. But what should the police do? Arrest him for disturbing the peace? Arrest him for vagrancy? Either way - even under the most draconian system - that guy's going to be back out within 30 days, likely after spending that time in a dirty, dangerous, cage without any MH resources. Who gets to deal with the consequences when he gets out? Why, you and I. One final note, do you know what the 3 largest mental health facilities in the US are? I.e. what facilities have the most number of diagnosed mentally ill patients? LA County jail, Cook County Jail, and Rikers Island.

  35. 95% of the time when I write a song, it’s on this old, crappy Takamine acoustic that’s starting to fall apart. The body has some cracks, there isn’t a lot of finish left on the back of the body or neck and two tuners are bent. I’ve re-glued the pickguard a couple times already and it’s about to need it again. The frets are lifting off the board and often as not when I pull it off the wall, the high E string has somehow managed to work itself underneath the 5th fret in some manner I’m not privy too. It would be worth maybe $200 if it was in good condition. As it is, it’s probably isn’t worth anything to anyone except me. 20-some years ago, when it became clear I had met the love of my life, would be starting a family and needed to get serious about a real career, I sold all my gear in a stupidly symbolic gesture of mature responsibility. My then fiancé told me not to. I didn’t listen, and I immediately regretted it. A few months later, my then wife surprised me with this. I didn’t have the heart to tell her it wasn’t much of a guitar. Certainly not in the same league as the Gibsons and Fenders I had sold. But for 20-some years, this was my one guitar, and it kept the musical flame flickering within me. It went with us on camping trips, it helped put the kids to bed, and it consoled me on several occasions when I was ready to throw in the towel. Its my favorite guitar, and I can play it like no other.

  37. Great post, and right on the money. All the old Texas fans - which includes the guys making the decisions for UT today - remember the last 8-10 years of the SWC. It was the early years of cable TV, and conferences were figuring out that Notre Dame didn't have to be the only school getting big $$$ for TV rights. The kind of money that conferences were getting in the late 80's is small potatoes compared to today's massive deals, but at the time, it was still an eyebrow-raising step up in the college football ante. Texas fans found themselves in a league with a 1-state footprint and a bunch of schools with small followings and very little bargaining power. It sent us into a death spiral. Recruits were leaving the state in droves, in favor of OU, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and the SEC schools. Recruits wanted to play in the venerable stadiums filled with 90K fans, not in Ownby or Robertson. I mean, if Texas didn't care about winning anything on a national level, that was a perfectly sustainable business model. But if Texas aspired to be a perennial top-10 team, it's definitely not. It wasn't then, and it isn't now. I would have been perfectly happy in the original iteration of the Big 12, but as the mid-sized public schools (Mizzou, Aggies, Colorado) peeled away and Nebraska collapsed (and blamed Texas for all their woes), our league literally started re-creating the SWC. It's not sustainable. We've seen how that ends for us - watching our home-state talent shun Austin, and watching schools with a lot less valuable brands getting bigger $$$$ because they're in better leagues. And Mitch is right - the school most responsible for a decade of Texas' on-the-field bed shitting is Texas. In the time where this conference realignment continued, we had Mack mailing it in for YEARS before handing off the reins to a couple of clowns. Finally, as for former Kansas State AD Tim Wieser and the rest of the Big 12 officials taking these laughably bitchy shots at us like spurned 14-year old girls: Texas is going to be just fine. No, "we might as well lose to Alabama" was not the logic in Austin. It was more like "we are not going to be able to compete with Alabama as long as we are yoked to 10 shitty also-ran schools in shitty nowhere towns like Manhattan Kansas that are run by shitty also-ran chucklekfucks like Tim Wieser (his psychology degree from Emporia State not withstanding)." And also "we aren't going to be able to compete with Alabama and their SEC money in this modern-day recreation of the gasping, wheezing SWC. Clearly it hurts his feelings that his school hasn't beaten us since three presidential administrations ago, so he's just pretending like they're on the other end of this winning streak. He's going to be really disappointed to see a re-energized Texas program. The jury is out on whether Sark is going to be able to harness that energy the same way Mack did in his first decade, and whether Sark can likewise turn those advantages into a perennial 10-win program. But there's no doubt that Austin is going to be buzzing with excitement and recruiting momentum over the next few seasons.
