  1. Taking our 16 year old son his first Tex-ou game, so I’m pumped. LFG!! Kid got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in July so a bit of a tricky situation, but he’s excited as well.

  3. I had the day every dog owner fears yesterday. I rescued Captain guy 7 years ago (well, he rescued me). We had an inseparable bond - he was literally never more than a few feet away from me 24/7. A few months ago I got diagnosed with cancer (see the I caught the cancer thread) and am weeks away from finishing treatment and beating this shit - he has helped me and my family navigate through the toughest few months of my life. Captain's health started failing during the middle of all this and I had to make the gut-wrenching (yet unquestionably correct) decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge yesterday. He almost saw me through it but couldn't quite make it, and he passed peacefully yesterday morning. RIP buddy, I'll never forget you,.

  7. Guys…I’m pretty shook. I was just going through some pics, and I realized…a family member of mine is mixed up in all this antifa business. For fuck’s sake, he’s even seen wearing antifa gear: Goddamn? What are we gonna do? This is a real stain on our family. My own grandfather....in antifa....the fucking shame.

  8. Imma's right. The majority of posters on this thread have a serious case of bitchass. Texas has played some lousy football so far this year. At times they've also looked pretty good. The reality is that, in almost all facets of life but certainly in football with unpredictable young men, things are never as good nor as bad as they appear. The OU game is a gift for the Texas football team (and its bitchass fanbase) after the dreadful showing in Florida last weekend. It's an opportunity to get right, to find their mojo on the biggest of stages, and to reset the table for the rest of the season. In an era of a 12-team playoff everything is still there to play for. We waited all offseason for a new football season. Now it's here, and it's the divine hour of our greatest rivalry. If you can't get pumped about that, fuck right off.

  13. The Guardian: US anti-fascism expert blocked from flying to Spain at airport A Rutgers University professor who taught a course on anti-fascism was blocked from leaving the US for Spain on Wednesday night, according to media reports, hours after Donald Trump hosted a White House roundtable highlighting the impact of antifa – or β€œanti-fascist” – far-left activists. Mark Bray, an historian who published the 2017 book Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, and has taught courses on anti-fascism at the New Jersey university, was attempting to board a plane at Newark airport bound for Europe when he was informed at the boarding gate that the reservations for him and his family had been cancelled. The professor, nicknamed β€œDr Antifa” by a group of students, had said he was moving to Europe after receiving death threats. Turning Point USA activists have claimed he is a β€œfinancier” for the leftwing movement. A petition calling for his removal from the university had been launched in the weeks following the assassination of the Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and Bray’s home address was revealed on social media. One threat included a vow to kill him in front of his students, according to the Washington Post. The threats led to Bray’s decision to relocate to Spain with his wife and two children and to continue to teach his students remotely. β€œSince my family and I do not feel safe in our home at the moment, we are moving for the year to Europe,” Bray said in an email to students on Sunday. β€œTruly I am so bummed about not being able to spend time with you all in the classroom.”

  14. Of course she’s disappointed now that it’s her kids getting crushed by the Republican bulldozer. But back in November when it was all theoretical and she was promised small tax breaks at the low, low cost of pain and misery to other people, she didn’t hesitate to pull the GOP lever.

  19. Uh, the other thing being when Binney enters the match Spears sits on the bench. That's even bigger to me than replacing Swindle, and I love both Swindle and Kahahawai. I think there's something to be said for getting an investment from the whole team. We don't like that kind of stuff as fans. We want to see the most productive players out there. If a player isn't being productive, we want to see them replaced. Damn the consequences for team chemistry. It's not really something that enters our calculations. I look at Kahahawai, and I question her career choices depending on how important volleyball is to her. She was the highest ranked player to come out of Hawaii, a state where volleyball has the same kind of reverence that football has in high schools in Texas. A true 6 rotation OH. She played for multiple U19 and U21 national teams. She could have transferred at any point, but bided her time on the bench. Now it's her senior year - her last year - and Spears has come in to be a force of nature. There is no universe where Kahahawai will be a better volleyball player than Cari Spears. I feel like Elliott has been trying to find a way to keep Kahahawai invested in this team. Also, we're one slip up away from Binney being the starter. Swindle already took a match off with a boot on the sidelines. Wisconsin just lost their starting setter to a dislocated shoulder. Penn State has completely imploded with the drama around their setter who helped lead them to a national championship last year and now is no longer on the team. Elliott has created a system where he can get Binney and Kahahawai on the court in a way that has buy in from the whole team, especially Swindle and Spears. It's late in matches when Swindle rotates to the front row, and he does his double sub. It doesn't feel like a punishment to Swindle or Spears for sub par play. It creates an investment for Binney and Kahahawai, so they feel like they're making substantial contributions to the success of the team. And frankly, it's been effective at times. I will note that Texas closed out the first set in dramatic fashion, going down 22-20 and then scoring the next 5 points, with Swindle on the serving line, so your point is well taken. Also, Swindle got a critical early solo block in the 5th set with the following stare down that really set a tone. At some point I just have to trust the coaches. There have been times I've had some doubts. I wasn't a fan of bringing Wenaas in. I wasn't a big fan of bringing in Carlsen last year, even though I feel like she's an outstanding setter (better pure setter than Swindle). I don't really like our lack of blocking as a team this year and the way we've seemed to deemphasize it. But Elliott has earned the right to make whatever mistakes he's going to make. He also has a tendency to let players play through struggles, even to an extent that can be frustrating to us fans, but earns him a tremendous amount of investment from the players he's working with. That's something we aren't going to see from the outside.

Zelensky is playing the game now with trump, lmao https://www.politico.eu/article/tomahawk-missiles-ukraine-nobel-peace-prize-trump-says-zelenskyy/ Kyiv will nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he sends Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine and helps broker a ceasefire with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday. β€œDuring our most recent meeting, I didn’t hear a β€˜no.’ What I did hear was that work will continue at the technical level and that this possibility will be considered,” Zelenskyy told journalists in Kyiv about a meeting he held with the U.S. president on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York at the end of September. β€œThe plan for ending the war won’t be easy, but it is certainly the way forward. And if Trump gives the world β€” above all, the Ukrainian people β€” the chance for such a ceasefire, then yes, he should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Zelenskyy said. β€œWe will nominate him on behalf of Ukraine.”

  32. Do you or have you lived there? I'm not romanticizing it; I have residency and live there several months a year most years. And, yes, I feel the failings of unfettered capitalism are a large part of the problem; I'm much more a proponent of controlled capitalism that at least pays lip service to the greater good (see Norway for how this is done with their natural resources). Possibly this is due to where I was born and raised, which is much more that way than most other parts of this country; part of that is knowing that even a state like mine has the #2 economy (GDP per capita) in the nation while a more "free capitalist" state like Texas is 16th. I've done well enough for myself in a not terribly lucrative profession; I'm not opposed to making money but I am opposed to hoarding it at a cost to society. It seems to me that like most Reagan Republicans - of which I was never one - you don't seem to have actually lived there either. (One reason I read this board is to get opinions different than mine, so I appreciate your viewpoints!) I will say that in nearly every European country the public health care system is a base that's available to all; many/most also choose supplemental private care. In Portugal, which has decent government healthcare, the top end private cover is about 1/10th the cost it is here. (oh, and whatever NVidia did or didn't do compared to Europe is wholly irrelevant to my quality of life both there and here. In my own profession - architecture and building science - Europe is decades ahead of the USA in product and materials development.)

  38. when my daughter was little, she liked to play "Free Street." I would pretend to shop, and when I asked how much whatever I was buying cost, she would say somethingl along the lines of 'Daddy, everything is free on Free Street." And I would have to pretend to be amazed by such a thing. Then everytime we played, Free Street would get even crazier, and if I bought one car for free, I would get a second car for free also. Then it would escalate all the way up to I get a million dollars back in change. IIRC, she was about four years old at the time.
