Was cruising around the El Campo vicinity tonight and was wondering if any of you could explain something about sod farming that I’ve always wondered about? When you buy grass sod it comes with about an inch to an inch and a half of soil attached to the bottom of the sod. When you drive past a sod farm after harvest you see where these strips have been cut out. My question is, how is this top soil replaced? By theory after 6 or 8 cuttings the field would be around a foot lower than the surrounding area, yet it’s not. I’ve never seen giant earth moving equipment replenishing the dirt so new grass can be sewn, but the fields remain level. So where does the new top soil come from?

there are deep cuts and shallow cuts.  in the latter, they basically don't shave topsoil off.  it's all organic matter.  quick growth of the grass starting with left-behind root structure/runners, lots of fertilizer, lime means constant regrowth so there is plenty of new organic material to decompose and make new soil to replace what little is lost.  constant cover means that wind doesn't get to erode it either.

for stuff with deep cuts, they have the exact problem you are saying.  you can't keep regrowing there.  it's for projects when you need to bring in the soil because you are planting on something that sucks.  but you're strip mining the farm.
