I mean, Stalin wasn’t exactly an egalitarian tree hugging hippie either.

The concept of right/left disappears when authoritarian/fascism comes into play because they can coexist on either side of the political spectrum.  Moves towards fascism can’t be described as entirely conservative because they’re often radical and revolutionary.  They can’t be entirely described as liberal either because the concentration of wealth and power that comes with fascism is anything but liberal.

Authoritarianism/totalitarianism/Fascism is its own independent ideology that exploits the divisions of the political spectrum.  It’s divide and conquer 24/7.

Gaddis argues that Stalin was so sure of Marxist Theory that he was positive it was just a matter of time until the proletariat revolted in the rest of the capitalist countries. He was so blinded by ideology that he thought there was no way the NATO countries could stay in a state of peace with each other. He was a true believer.

It's like the left coming out and saying Stalin was actually a far right winger. It just makes 0 sense.

Which is exactly what they would do if the people who argue that Democrats should adopt the same dirty tactics as the Republicans got their way.

His actions tell a different story tho.  He was obsessed with maintaining and improving his own power.  He tried to make himself a god among his people with the propaganda.  He murdered rivals and even tried to rewrite history.

While he may have espoused a true belief in the egalitarian worldview of Marxism, he was a corrupt piece of shit gangster that undermined the very system of government he purported to align with.

It’s no wonder Putin is trying to revive Stalin’s public image as a benign hero of the Soviet Union.

There are some nice parallels to Trumpism and Climate Change in this young lady’s speech.

The older generations selling out the younger generations for profit.  The embrace of disinformation to ignore real problems.

Last week, Gilmour auctioned off his guitars, including the black Fender Stratocaster that helped create Dark Side of the Moon and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. He said goodbye to the 12-string Martin behind Wish You Were Here. In all, he raised $21.5 million—that’s right, $21.5 million.

He gave the proceeds from the most valuable auction of musical instruments in history to a nonprofit that fights climate change.

Hey, one of the purchasers of David Gilmore's guitars was identified:

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is the type of billionaire who will quote long passages from Pink Floyd’s The Wall to you when you answer the phone. And even if you don’t pick up, he’ll still leave a voicemail parroting the monumental double-album’s whole “collect call to Mrs. Floyd from Mr. Floyd” routine. He’s a superfan who once stormed the front of the crowd at Chicago’s Soldier Field to get closer to the band in 1977, when they played their Animals and Wish You Were Here albums in full. And he’s the same music fan who, a decade later, cheered on David Gilmour when the singer/guitarist rolled by him in a golf cart backstage at a 1987 Indianapolis Floyd gig.

Quote

Now, he’s taken his fandom to its greatest height: Last week, he spent a record-breaking $3,975,000 at an auction on Gilmour’s famed “Black Strat,” the Floyd frontman’s instrument of choice on the band’s iconic Seventies classics. He also dropped $175,000 on the Pink Floyd–branded flight case that housed the guitar for decades and $1,095,000 for the 1969 Martin D-35 Gilmour used to record “Wish You Were Here.” When the sale was over, he bought nearly 25 percent of the nearly $21.5 million total the auction raised for Gilmour’s charity of choice, ClientEarth, which fights climate change.

Quote

“I just fucking love Pink Floyd, man, I cannot deny it,” Irsay tells Rolling Stone. “I think [Roger] Waters’ lyrics and Gilmour’s playing and their whole story and prominence is just so profound that I cannot say enough about my excitement for this. … David Gilmour stands by himself.”

Spoiler

Irsay established himself long ago as a connoisseur of cultural and rock & roll artifacts. He owns guitars that once belonged to Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Prince and others, as well as Jack Kerouac’s original “scroll” manuscript for On the Road and an original printing of the book Alcoholics Anonymous. He fondly remembers getting into bidding wars with the late Microsoft cofounder and fellow guitar aficionado Paul Allen, and he still radiates excitement when he talks about purchasing a pillar of rock’s fabric like the Black Strat.

Still, when he was bidding, he never expected to set the record for the most expensive guitar sold at auction, surpassing the heavily autographed “Reach Out to Asia” guitar, which went for $2.7 million in 2005. “I didn’t think it was gonna break all the records and go where it went,” he says. “It’s a good thing, of course, that the market is trending upward, but I was just taken by surprise.

Interest in the auction was high; it lasted eight hours and people from 66 countries registered to bid. Irsay did his bidding through a proxy, Larry Hall, and even though he wasn’t in the room, he was surprised by the level of interest in the event, which included 127 guitars and amps. He chalks the record numbers up to a heavy interest in Pink Floyd worldwide, a booming economy and the fact it was all for charity. “I knew after the ‘Wish You Were Here’ acoustic went for [$900,000] that it would be a record-breaking auction,” he says, citing the guitar’s “hammer price.” (The higher number above reflects additional fees that come with bidding.) “It was really off-kilter. I was like, wow. Why on Earth and how on Earth? But Floyd internationally is a powerful thing.”

He almost walked away from the Black Strat when bidding escalated quickly in the hundreds of thousands. He compares the bidding war to Ali and Frazier’s famous fight. “I was trying to slow down this opponent, and he just kept coming,” he says. His final bid was for a hammer price of $3.3 million, but he says if it went higher, he might have abandoned it. “If someone had gone to $3.4 [million], maybe I would have had one last effort at $3.5, but I don’t know,” he says. “Bidding is an intuitive thing. There are so many things that go into that zen mode, and, as they say in Caddyshack, you have to become the ball.”

He knew that once he had bid on the case, which went on the block just before the guitar, that he had to go through with getting the guitar. “If I don’t get the guitar, I’ll look like a jackass,” he says, laughing. “But I love Strats, and this is the Strat. This is the one that was the signature guitar for those incredible Floyd leads.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Gilmour said parting ways with the Black Strat didn’t bother him so much. “You know something? For me, I can let go of it,” he said. “It’s going to bring a lot of people to have a look at this sale, and it’s going to do that job. It’s a lovely guitar. … It’s on so much stuff, but Fender have made replica ones that they sell, and I have two or three of those that are absolutely perfect. One of those might be my future guitar of choice or even, horror of horror, maybe I’ll even change the color.”

Now that the real Black Strat belongs to Irsay, the Colts owner is looking forward to playing it. But he says he remembers when he got Elvis Presley’s guitar he was “playing it a shitload” and started thinking, “You shouldn’t play the King’s guitars so much.” Nevertheless, with the Black Strat, “I’m definitely going to be getting some notes out of it, man.” He recently tracked a version of Tom Petty’s “Something Big” with some of his rock-star friends, and he’s looking forward to playing the instrument with his Super Bowl Band.

“We’re gonna have to do something to get the Black Strat to scream a little more before it’s all said and done, but it really holds a special place in the collection,” he says. “It truly is part of rock & roll history, the likes of which will never be seen again.” In addition to playing it, he hopes to display it in a museum he’s planning to show off some of his rock & roll artifacts.

His want to preserve things like the Black Strat also ties into the auction itself, since his money will be going to ClientEarth. Irsay says it’s “tremendous” that Gilmour would attach himself to that charity. “It is so soothing that someone from rock & roll would want to participate right in the center aspect of helping planet Earth,” he says. “God knows we need it. It’s a very serious topic, so I think it’s a wonderful thing. And very seldom do you see the likes of literally $20 million raised for something like it. That is significant capital towards a cause.”

But of course, for Irsay, it’s win-win. He hasn’t yet spoken with Gilmour about the sale, but he’s simply happy he was able to help the planet and own an instrument he once saw live onstage in 1977. “It was the big fish that didn’t get away,” he says. “We all remember the big fish that did, but this barely didn’t. This is something, man. This was worth the price of admission.”

The dire warnings have caught my attention and concern. The idiotic attempts to dismiss the alarm such as the ice melting silliness above or just the "everything will be fine" line indicate the dearth of the building blocks for a credible contra-argument.

I believe we're in trouble. We're in trouble, and we continue to rush blindly towards the day of reckoning.

I've got an older Infiniti that I love to drive. I'd been thinking of saving for the next year or so to buy a later model. Now I look at ads for big pick-up trucks and SUVs, and I wonder if people will be throwing away their money on a doomed technology. The wildly esteemed market is working against us.

It's not in the interests of the short-sighted, narrow-minded auto industry and petroleum industry to adjust.

Obama funded alternative energy start-ups. Opposition employed ignorance, lies, and the one example of a fraud to torpedo efforts in that direction. The opposition required funding and had only profits in mind. Again, the market works against the common good.

I'm thinking that I'll save my money and research electric cars or hybrids. By the time I'm ready to buy, I hope there are some choices that are as fun as a gas engine. If not, I'll have to forego a basic pleasure in life, but I can't stand the idea that cataclysm may be coming and I will not have anything about it.

The only way the market may help is when/if the cataclysm's approach becomes undeniable, there will be opportunities for growth in alternative energy. History will not be kind to the powers that delayed development of methods and technologies to have us more prepared for what is likely coming.

The Resistance

Dice is the founder of a San Diegan Christian activist group called "The Resistance", described as "known for its hardline stance on morality". In 2008, in response to Starbucks' reintroduction of its original logo (featuring a topless siren), Dice led his group and its 3000 members in boycotting the coffee chain: "The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute […] It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks." Starbucks had more than 6000 locations in 2008.[8]

As the founder of The Resistance, Dice told KFSN-TV of his group's intention to disrupt theater showings of 2009's Angels & Demons because the film "is a fraud, aimed at covering up the existence of a secret society called the Illuminati." Dice contended that the Illuminati were instrumental in the September 11 attacks and the financial crisis of 2007–2008.[9]

Dice has called Super Bowl halftime shows of the 2010s "elaborate Illuminati rituals hidden in plain sight". The Super Bowl XLVI and XLVII halftime shows allegedly featured "secret Illuminati hand signs", while musician Katy Perry—star of the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show—"promotes bisexuality and appears to be some kind of Satanic Witch".[12] Dice published a YouTube video decrying the Super Bowl 50 halftime show's "gay Pride propaganda" that featured the rainbow-colored message "believe in love" and a platform with four ramps which Dice described as a "crucifix blasphemously placed in the centre."[13]

Once again conflating celebrities with the Illuminati and Satanism, Dice called musicians Jay-Z and Beyoncé "Illuminati puppets. I call them Satanic skanks." Dice described celebrities' connection to the Illuminati as the pursuit of power via message of materialism.[14]

Dice promoted the Jade Helm 15 conspiracy theories, claiming that the 2015 military exercises were preparation for a declaration of martial law in the United States.[15]

Indeed, lies are an integral part of the argument.

Go drive a Tesla, or any electric really.  The bolded is not an issue.  Instant torque blows gas engines away.

Why is 2013 the most recent data point?  Also, the observed points do show an upward trend, so why not take some measures to help minimize or reverse the rise?

Back in 2013 and the preceding years the deniers were arguing "The Pause." Global temperatures weren't accelerating the way the models predicted (as if it should be perfectly linear). Then 2014 set a new global temperature record. Then 2015 broke that record. Then 2016 broke that record.

Thats why.

latest UAH troposphere reading is +0.3, almost identical to the reading in 2013. So five years forward and the models are even more wrong.

Like the original graph, it took me 30 seconds to google it. Which is probably less time than it took for WhatheBuck to fabricate his information.

According to this report, approximately 4% of all carbon dioxide emissions are related to digital technology.  That is more than air transport.  By 2020, that number could be 8%, more than auto transport. Online video, and the related infrastructure, accounts for ~1% of worldwide carbon emissions, more than Spain.. Over 25% of that online video consumption is pornography (seems low). That consumption created more C02 emissions than all French households combined. Greater than 5% of that consumption is just @suddenly shaggy searching for BBC videos. You assholes are literally killing the planet every time you jerk it. According to this French think tank, digital sobriety is the first step in correcting this problem. Do your part assholes and save the planet.

I haven't checked on this thread in over a year. In sincerity, what's the jist of what you're arguing around here - shit's getting hotter, it's just not getting hotter as fast as the majority of models had predicted?

The average was taken from 79-83 as baseline and I remember 1980 was hot as hell. Was over 100 F nearly everyday that summer in Kansas. So maybe they took a hot five year average as baseline as well. Probably hotter than average, as the graph dipped below the baseline the following few years after 1983.

There is a good documentary on Amazon now entitled "Living in the Future's Past."

Jeff Bridges headed it up and narrates it.  It covers a lot, but mainly focuses on how energy, climate change and other things affecting our future.   It's not so much a stunt to whip up climate change fear over what we are doing...but more trying to understand why we do it and how we might change to improve the future for us and our descendants.  It looks at things from the perspective of energy.

I had to watch it twice to catch even half of it, and probably will watch it a few more times, there is so much information that provokes thought.

Not sure why the lulz.  Everything in that article is correct.  It won't solve everything of course, but the western meat-heavy diet has a very large environmental impact, both from a resource usage standpoint and the overall carbon footprint.  Not sure why I'm wasting my time explaining this to you though.

After centuries of fighting back water in a low-lying nation, the Dutch have become the world leaders in flood control. And their expertise is helping Texas design what would become the nation’s most ambitious — and expensive — coastal barrier.
