16-10 westlake at the end of the 3q

DS defense is the real deal. Other than a 43 yard run they have shut down the run, and have been putting great pressure on pass plays.

DS QB is pretty salty, hitting some great deep throws.

How’d we get the ball back there? Phone froze.

22-10 chaps

check that: 29-10 now

first play of next drive Novosod throws int, westlake scores next play.

We have had some “coaches gone wild” encounters w Dripping in Pop Warner. Their coaches (dads w dreams) were really angry after the game, claiming our Westlake team was running up the score at the end. This happened after the same DS dads had run up the score against our B team, lol. As a family involved in Westlake athletics, I can say that the students from all schools we encounter are mostly great. It’s the parents who embarrass themselves with ridiculous antics. (And we have our share, trust me)

I thought the secondary would struggle a bit in this game but defense came up huge.

It was a really great performance against a great QB. However, as I have written here previously, this result tells me we probably won’t four-peat. State champs win these games 44-10. Props for DS for really playing it tough.

My kid is in 8th grade and we played DS middle school and Sycamore MS the last two weeks. DS parents seemed like dicks, Sycamore seemed fine. We got to the DS game early, maybe 15 people in the stands, my other kid goes up to the top row and some Karen yells at him that these seats are taken, waving her arms in all directions.

Oh my god. Sounds familiar. When my older daughter played VB against DS middle school, there were DS parents and grandparents in the stands screaming shit every time our players served. It was pathetic.

DFW

Argyle @ Frisco Emerson  TONIGHT  Emerson opened last season, is playing their first varsity season of football; their mascot is the Mavericks, their uniforms looks like UNC, and they've never lost a varsity game (7-0).  That last fact changes tonight, when they run into the machine that is Argyle.

Both teams' QBs got hurt and Emerson had only 159 yards total.

Aledo @ Burleson Centennial  They played their first varsity season in 2012, but I don't think anyone had ever paid attention to BC football until last week when they upset Ryan 23-16.  Their D is their calling card, with only 53 points allowed.  But Aledo has looked REALLY PISSED OFF since their 0-2 start, winning their last 3 by 193-14.  Aledo does have Ryan next week, but any chance they're looking ahead to that got destroyed last week.

Aledo 64-21  BC's ground-based offense isn't build to come-from-behind and they really got blitzed when they tried to pass.

Kaufman at Anna  This is #8 @ #5 in 4AD1  Anna is undefeated and led by a couple of D1 recruits.  Kaufman has a blemish thanks to very good 5A Crandall.  Anna has scored 276 in six games, while Kaufman has played a tougher schedule and has several close wins.  Toss a coin for this one.

Anna rallied from 21-13 down to win 42-21.

TC Nelson @ Keller  Nelson is undefeated and is one of the highest-scoring teams in the state with a 340-57 point differential.  Keller played SLC down to the wire last week in a 38-35 heart-breaker, and you have to figure that it'll be hard to flush that one and get ready for another really good team.

45-17 Nelson

Mansfield @ Duncanville  Both of these teams are undefeated, but I'm only putting it on here to remind me to look for the score, because this will be blowout.

38-3 D-town

McKinney @ Allen  McKinney has won 5 straight, averaging 50 ppg, since losing their opener at Temple.  Allen has pulled off a similar arc, but with fewer points (and more defense).  McKinney's 60-51 win over Braswell last week looks more like a loss to me; this weekend will correct the ledger on that, as Allen just has too much for the Lions.

McKinney led most of the game, but lost 31-28 on a TD with 5 minutes left.

HOUSTON

Foster @ Manvel  TONIGHT  Both of these teams could be in the discussion of best programs to not win state in the last decade.  Both have also slipped a bit in recent years;  I'm guessing that new schools opening has something to do with that.  Manvel has lost twice (Angelton and Shadow Creek) in 2022, while Foster's only loss was an uncharacteristic 12-7 slog with Mag West.  Foster's D has allowed only 33 points.  I like that to be the difference.

Lightning delayed to Saturday

Hitchcock @ Columbus  People are sleeping on Hitchcock!  The Bulldogs won the small-school 7on7 state championship and have won their first 7 games, including a blowout of Refugio and a nice win over a tough Salado bunch.  Both of these teams are led by soph QBs.  Columbus's QB is Adam Schoebel, who threw for 2400 yards last season as a freshman, and whose father is a former NFLer and head coach at Columbus.   The biggest difference between the two teams is the Columbus D, as the Cardinals sport a 338-62 point differential.

Hitchcock with upset 33-28, winning on a 4th-24 pass with 13 seconds.

COASTAL BEND

Alice @ Calallen  The Coyotes are 5-1 with only a loss to CC Vets, but Calallen looks like they don't miss Coach Danaher at all, with a 316-56 point diff.  Calallen won this game 37-0 last season.  It might be a little closer tomorrow, but I'll be shocked if it's actually close.

Calallen 37-30 on a 62-yard run with about 1 minute left. Wow.

WEST TEXAS

Cisco @ Stamford  Stamford is undefeated and unranked, and allows only 9 ppg.  Cisco is ranked #8, though they lost a close game to ranked 3A Breckenridge.  Cisco also has good wins over tough teams from Wall and Jacksboro, so I think the rankings are correct and the Lobos will win this one.

42-14 Cisco

Whitesboro @ Brock  Like the previous game, Whitesboro is undefeated and unranked, while Brock is ranked despite a 2-4 record.  Brock is definitely the better team, as they have played one of the toughest non-district slates I've ever seen (Tex Pleasant Grove, Hirschi, Wimberley, and Gunter).  The district opponents must look like JV teams.

Brock scored 2 late TDs to win 39-35.  WB's QB was tackled inside the 1 on the final play.  They had just been hit with a delay penalty...

CENTRAL TEXAS
China Spring @ Waco LaVega  LaVega has rebounded from an unheard of 3-game losing streak, pasting their last 3 opponents by 142-21.  But CS might be better than last season's state champs and they'll outclass the Lions in this one.

35-7 CS

Bremond @ Granger  This is #10 @ #9 in 2AD2  2nd ranked opponent in a row for Bremond, as they're coming off a tough loss to Chilton.  Granger has won 4 in a row after an OT loss to Thorndale.  I picked Bremond last week, so I'll keep believing in them in spite of that loss.

Fuck you, Bremond!  Back-and-forth game that ended 31-28 for Granger.

AUSTIN

Round Rock @ Vandegrift  This is #19 @ #17 in 6A.  RR is D and running game.  Vandy has rebounded from a season-opening loss to Dripping that doesn't look bad at all now.  Since that loss, they've outscored 5 opponents 222-19.  Really high great game potential here, but I think the Vipers have a little too much.

30-22 Vandy

Westlake @ Dripping   Maybe the biggest high school game ever played in Hays County?  Dripping is having no trouble with 6A, winning their games by a combined 294-40.  But the Chaps are at 321-78 and waaaaaaaaay better than anyone Drip has played.   I get the feeling that this is the year that Drip knocks on the door, but they're probably going to have to wait a couple of years to kick the sonofabitch in, as Oail Andrew Phillips would say.

29-10 Westlake busted it open by forcing turnovers in the 4th.

SOUTH TEXAS

PSJA North @ McAllen Rowe  I've always had a soft spot for Rowe because they sound like they're named after a porn star.  Who can forget Ginger Lynn, Christy Canyon, and Nikki Rowe starring in Reform School Girls IV?  North's D has pitched a couple of shutouts already, and they've beaten a better team in Vela two weeks ago, so the Fighting Alphabets have to be considered the favorite here.

63-14 North

SAN ANTONIO

Reagan-Johnson  Saturday! The Stone Oak Super Bowl, where the records don't matter, even though both teams are 4-2.  Reagan has won 4 in a row after losing to SV and Round Rock to open the season.  Johnson is led by a soph QB.  They won this one 46-43 in OT last season.  Expect another shootout that goes down to the wire.

EAST TEXAS

Liberty Eylau @ Gilmer  Gilmer posted an impressive win over the other/tougher Texarkana school last week, beating rival PG 35-14.  TLE has had a nice season at 5-1, with only a loss at Sulphur Springs.  But they have 3 wins by less than a TD and they're not on the same level as the #2 Buckeyes.

Gilmer 59-20

Other fun scores:

Desoto 86 Lake Ridge 26

Cinco Ranch 35 PAetow 24

LEEgacy 33 Permian 25  MOJO had led 25-16

Lubbock Cooper 11 Abilene 8

Fulshear 23 Mag West 20

Melissa 54 Denison 44

Midl Heritage 38 Ennis 35

Canyon Lake 38 SA Davenport 34

Chapell Hill 79 Lindale 45  WTF???

Bellville 28 Sealy 7

Vernon 28 Breckenridge 21

West 89 Maypearl 0

Pottsboro 36 Winnsboro 35

Abernathy 40 Roosevelt 21

Not expecting 4th either. Semis would be a great run.

Probably not the best Westlake team but there’s no one at all standing in your way this year. North Shore is resorting to playing receivers at QB after their star got hurt. Duncanville is down as well and I honestly don’t think they’ll ever win state anyway. Westlake is still the state title favorites by a few miles.

The Alphabets are looking at 10-0 this year, that was basically their last test. Like Harlingen they have abnormal RGV size on the o-line. Their o-line is 4 juniors and one sophomore, QB, RB, and 3 top receivers are juniors, and at least their top 5 leading tacklers are juniors or sophomores. They’ll be mean next year too.

Just got back from Del Rio (2:00 AM). Long trip for a SA crew, but it was a great trip and game. Homecoming for the hosts, on their Homecoming game, against a team out of Laredo.

Hard and tough fought game by both teams. Both teams were great and well disciplined, as we had less that 15 total foul calls/plays.

Home team had their chances to pull out a victory at the end, but the visitors prevailed, with a final score of 20-19. Both teams’ kids were well disciplined and was a great game to officiate. Everyone of those I interacted with was always “yes sir or no sir”!

Off to bed for the Horns 11AM kick, as I can never seem to go straight to bed after getting home!

Hook’em!

You know I have nothing but love for my WL brethren! I just find it funny when I see WL / LT parents complaining about other fan bases when our collective group is probably the most complained about in HSFB.

Only thing you need to know about EP football is the name Ryan Estrada. El Dorado freshman RB that they’re calling the next Aaron Jones. I’ve seen a picture of him and he looks like he’d pass the Mishak test with a different first name if you catch my drift, so there’s a chance he could be a real prospect imo.

Belongs in recruiting news but damnit I need to take any prediction victory I can. FBS offer as a freshman running back from EP is pretty impressive.

@Helobious, it’s Battle of the Arroyo week!

This year the best rivalry in the valley is also the best game in the valley and one of the best of the year; Harlingen and San Benito are clearly the two best 6a teams and it’s not really close.

The two teams look a lot like…..each other. San Benito leads most stats but Harlingen has had a slightly tougher schedule.  San Benito’s defense has looked stingier than Harlingen’s after some injuries to the DL.  But San Benito has also not seen an OL/RB combo like Harlingen will bring. Both teams run to set up the pass. It’s at Boggus Stadium which gives a bit of an edge to the Cards but San Benito will bring a crowd to the visitor side.  Against common opponents, both teams blew Mission Vets away and both teams pitched a shutout against Hanna, with the Cardinals putting up more points.

Call it really a coin flip, an old-school rivalry between two teams with an old-school feels.

Yeah should be a great one. One of our two wounded DL came back last week so at least there’s that. The hounds really like to run it even more than us and have a very good RB but we should be able to slow them down hopefully. I like our odds if we stick to running it all night and pass just enough to keep them off balance. And pray it doesn’t come down to special teams. We’ve had decent kickers the past couple years but have struggled this year, one of the safeties that plays soccer has had to split kicking duties with the actual kicker.

Great slate of games this week, by far the best since district play started...

SOUTH TEXAS

San Benito @ Harlingen  Both teams are undefeated for what they call the Battle of the Arroyo.  The rivalry is actually pretty one-sided, as Harlingen has a 72-27 all-time edge, hasn't lost the game since 2018, and won 17-0 last season.  The reason to  think it might be different this season is that the Fighting Freddy Fenders have an incredible D, which has allowed only 26 points in 7 games.  They've pitched 3 shutouts and have only given up a FG twice more.  Maybe the best game in the state this week? Part of me says, "Don't be stupid, pick the home team," but there are a lot of visitor seats in that big old stadium, too.

Shiner @ Refugio  Don't ever say the UIL doesn't have a sense of humor -- this is a district game.  Both teams started the season with an expected loss to a larger-class opponent, but have been on ridiculous rolls since -- Shiner has posted at least 7 TDs 5 games in a row; Refugio, 4.  Whatever, this game isn't all that important, as they'll likely meet again deep in the playoffs.  But I think Shiner wins this because they have shown themselves to be much more physical and more disciplined than the Bobcats in the last few years.

DFW

Allen @ Guyer  TONIGHT 6pm ON ESPN2!!!  Allen hasn't lost since the opener to a Cali team, but they nearly got tripped up by McKinney last week.  Guyer is averaging nearly 50 ppg and no one has played them to within 17 this season.  Guyer simply looks like one of the best teams in the state, while Allen only looks like a really good team.  I could be wrong, but I think Guyer wins this fairly easily.

Aledo @ Ryan   This is maybe the first time I've ever actually wanted to be in Denton.  Ryan was shocked in its opener by New Braunfels, and lost last time out to Burleson Cent. two weeks ago.  They're having trouble with injuries on the offensive side, and now's a bad time for that as they're running into a Bearcat team that is playing PISSED OFF after 2 losses to start the season.  They beat the snot out of previously-undefeated BC last week 64-21, and have scored 257 points in just the last 4 games.  Like the previous game, this one probably won't be that close.

Frisco Independence @ Argyle  For the 2nd week in a row, the Eagles face another new, faceless unbeaten Frisco school.  Indy's first varsity season was 2014, their mascot is the Knights, they're purple and black, and they went 3-7 last season.  And like Frisco Emerson, they will lose to an Argyle team that is just a freaking machine.

AUSTIN

Dripping @ Lake Travis  Dripping showed themselves to be not quite ready for prime time last week, as they played Westlake pretty evenly before the game got away from them in the 4th quarter.  LT's weakness is their D, which has allowed 154 in 7 games.  You wouldn't intentionally design a schedule that has WL and LT back-to-back, but I think the Drips are good enough to get it done this week.  And there will be a lot of points scored.

Navarro @ Wimberley  Navarro has lost 3 regular season games for the first time since 2011, and their D has allowed 207 in 7 games.  Wimberley has apparently reached the level where they just reload every season, as losing their QB to transfer in July hasn't slowed them down much, thanks to a very good D and a nimble coaching staff that quickly adjusted the offense to a zone-read RPO style.  I think the Texans will win this big, but I expect them to meet again late in the playoffs.

SAN ANTONIO

NB Canyon @ Seguin  Call this one the Travis Bush Bowl, as the Canyon head coach who is doing such a great job this season also led Seguin to their most successful season in a while in 2020.  Both teams have 1 loss, NBC's to Smithson Valley, and Seguin's to NB.  NBC plays a lot of close, high-scoring games -- 43-42, 35-32, and 44-41 wins already this season.  Seguin is similar, with 42-39 and 41-34 wins on their resume.  Expect Canyon to win another shootout.

CENTRAL TEXAS

Franklin @ Lorena  This is not only #1 @ #10 in a district match, it's also defending 3AD2 champs @ 3AD1 champs.   Lorena is by definition not as good as last season, as they already have losses to China Spring and Yoe.  They've gotten it going better since the Yoe game 4 weeks ago, though the defense has not been dominant.  Franklin, OTOH, just continues to Wing-T the shit out of opponents, averaging 50+ ppg and scoring 181 the last 3 games.  Franklin won this game last season 27-20, Lorena's only loss.  They look good to win again to me.

Lake Belton @ Midlothian   LB has the #1 recruit in the state, WR Micah Hudson.  He's averaging over 100 ypg.  If you haven't heard of LB, that's because this is their first season of district play.  They've scored 381 in 8 games, and their only loss was a 34-33 squeaker to Shoemaker.  Midlothian is undefeated and ranked #9 in 5AD1.  This is their best start to a season since 1984.   They run a flex-bone that chews up opponents and they have a stout D -- only 78 points allowed.  That should be enough to keep them undefeated.

Stephenville @ CS  This is #1 @ #2 in 4AD1 and both defending state champs.  I think CS has a better team.  Stephenville just tries to outscore people, with wins so far of 49-42, 62-61, 56-49, and 43-42.  CS is ranked lower because of that loss to Parish Episcopal in week 2, but they're a more well-rounded team, with a good D and an offense than can run or pass.  I think they get it done.

West @ Grandview  Both teams are 6-1, and a little hard to read because their district contains 4 charter schools, plus hapless Maypearl, whose coach just resigned this week.  Grandview lost its season opener to 4A power Glen Rose, then handed Malakoff their only loss, and has since blitzed 5 hapless opponents by 333-21.  West lost to Lorena 21-15 in week 2.  The Trojans beat Maypearl last week 89-0; they led 55-0 after the 1st quarter thanks to 5 defensive TDs and a punt return TD; the lead was 76-0 at half.  The only 2nd half scoring was a KOR TD and a pick 6.  As usual, West tries to bully teams with a tough running game, but Grandview has a very good junior QB who also started last season, and I think he'll make the difference.

Granger @ Chilton  This is #9 @ #5 in 2AD2.  Chilton is undefeated, while Granger's only loss was in OT to Thorndale in week 2.  Common opponent scores are always a terrible way to compare teams, but I got nothin', soooo... Chilton beat Bremond by 11 a couple of weeks ago, while Granger edged Bremond by 3 last week.  I'd bet on the home team, but it should be a good one.

HOUSTON

Atascocita @ CE King  This seems like it's turning into the annual game for 3rd place in H-town supremacy behind North Shore and Katy.  'Cita's only loss was 35-28 to Katy in week 2; their other 6 games have been a cumulative 284-15.  King has losses to Allen and NS, but  their closest win was by 21.  Atascocita won this 42-21 in 2021.  Probably be closer this year, but Atascocita should win.

Cinco Ranch-Katy  Katy is too damn good (again), but let's pretend this will be close.  They're coming off a bye week, having snuffed Paetow 54-0 two weeks ago.  Cinco has a good team, but their D is weak.  They lost twice -- 40-35 to Oak and an absurd 77-63 to Morton Ranch.  Katy will grind them to a pulp and might not punt.

Klein Cain-Collins  As much as all the Klein and Cypress schools run together to me, Collins is the one standing out.  Collins is undefeated, coming off a 28-17 win over a Klein Forest team than handed Cain its only loss 20-17.  Both have tough wins over Summer Creek, so not much to separate them, including home field advantage.  Flip a coin!

Galveston Ball @ Waltrip  SATURDAY  Ball beat LaMarque 49-7 in the opener, and hasn't allowed a point since.  Waltrip is 6-1, but that 1 is a 60-21 loss to Dayton.  Their D has since posted 2 shutouts and 2 more single-digit efforts.  Neither of these teams will go far in the playoffs but this should be fun, and I wouldn't bet against a D that has allowed only 7 all season, so Ball it is.

COASTAL BEND

CC Vets-Miller     Miller is undefeated an unchallenged: 341-91 on the season.  They don't have Andrew Body from the magical 2020 playoff run, but Body's favorite target on that team is now a senior.  Vets has lost twice, by 1 to NB Canyon and in OT to El Campo, so they easily could be undefeated.  But Miller beat El Campo by 20, so I'd expect them to win a very high-scoring game in this one.

Edna @ Goliad  Edna lost to Refugio on 9/9;  they've since beaten Sinton and several severely overmatched district foes.  Goliad has lost squeakers to Poteet and Industrial, but has shown one of the better defenses in South Texas, allowing only 74 points.  But Edna beat Industrial 46-0 last week, so they win absent a letdown.

EAST TEXAS

Timpson @ Joaquin  After having only 1 winning season since 2012, the Timpson Bears are 33-2 over the past 3 years, with both losses to Shiner.  They've scored 391 in 7 games, with 40 being their lowest output.  Once-beaten Joaquin should give them their best test of the season, as the Rams are +240 in point diff.  But this group in Timpson has a lot of starters who have played since they were sophs, and they should cruise through their region again.  Timpson won 47-0 last year.  It will be closer, but not close.

WEST TEXAS

Shallowater @ Bushland  Bushland is 389-74 this season.  They've whipped Canadian, and they've whipped several 4A teams.  The only reason they're not ranked #1 is because Franklin is in the same division.  Shallowater has scored 134 the last two weeks and has only lost to 4A Midland Greenwood. They're good, but not nearly good enough to beat Shallowater.
