2022 Texas High School Football

It’s an interpretation call and not always a flag. I thought the hit on Quinn was dirtier and that drew no flag. If the ball was dead or they deem that he drove him into the ground yeah that’s an easy flag. I do notice the other Graham players were just starting to celebrate the pick, but #12 from Graham goes right in for those rib punches on #3 which really set things off. No telling what happened earlier, maybe Hirschi did have some other dirty hits, but for that one play I do mostly blame #12.

We don’t typically do shout outs but my alma mater Price Carlisle is ranked #2 in the state in 2A after being one of the worst football programs in the state for decades. I think there were years in the 00s where they didn’t score points (the entire season) and that was in 1A. Seeing them beat up on teams that beat the shit out of us for years is pretty nice. Teneha, Arp, Troup, Alto, etc.

WTF has happened to Teneha?  Seems like they have never not been really good and they've won state at least a couple of times recently.  And now they're losing 48-0 to PC?

No idea but reading a bit on the Smoaky forums seems Carlisle has benefitted from a lot of move-ins from Henderson over the years. Nobody is moving to Teneha? Just a guess.

I do not really keep up with high school sports that much now (just casual glances at the regular season rankings and then cursory interest in the playoffs), so pardon me for what I have no doubt is a very stupid question:  why (or how) are the schools in the classifications below 6A divided into division 1 and division 2 in the rankings prior to the playoffs?  If I recall correctly when the UIL started that d1 and d2 bullshit, the regular season was completed, the schools qualifying for the playoffs from each district were determined, and then they were slotted d1 or d2 according to school size.  How is this done nowadays?  Again, apologies for the dumbass question.

It’s done every other year in re-alignment. 5A for instance will have all the schools with higher enrollment in D1 and there’s a cutoff where everyone else goes to D2.

I wish they did all classifications like 6A and wait until the playoff teams are set and then split. Splitting like they do now has caused some dumb districts.

I wish they would stop with the d1 and d2 bullshit.  Just divide into 7 or 8 classifications.  Too many state titles being awarded with the current setup.  Or at least have the d1 and d2 champions play each other for the actual state title.

the top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs. The two schools with the largest enrollments automatically advance to the Division I bracket.

Awaiting BV’s weekly post. There’s a really good one in DFW this week. Aledo @ Burleson Centenniel. Centenniel coming off one of the schools biggest victories last week against Denton Ryan. Aledo and the 108 district game winning streak will be put to the test.

Hirschi was just declared the winner in the Graham Hirschi game from Friday night.  Initially 26 players were ejected from the game but that has been reduced to 11 total players.  6 from Graham and 5 Hirschi players.

Big rumor going around that they have found the guy who made the racist comments on the DCTF app.  Supposedly he is from Fort Worth with zero affiliation to either team.  That’s just a rumor with no public acknowledgment at this time though.

Well now it’s come out that Hirschi played an ineligible player.

Word.  Cedar Park is in a district with two teams from College Station.  Not only that, but had to travel away to both of them this year.  Not only that, but it was back-to-back weekends.  Stupid.

Mack and DeLoss assured me that too much winning is actually bad for the kids.

Never heard of this. Game will apparently count as a loss for both teams. I know it flukes into that but that’s not a bad idea for a possible punishment if a game ends in a brawl in the future.

Yeah I’m not sure why Graham would not get the win in this case.  Hirschi was awarded the win yesterday because they were leading the game at the time it was called, similar to a weather cancellation late in a game.  So why then does Graham not get the win if Hirschi has to forfeit?  Only reasoning I can think of is to prevent a riot by the Hirschi community if Graham was considered the winner.

Apparently the player in question actually played for Graham last year and moved to Hirschi. They allowed him to transfer without issue prior to the season starting. Then after Graham forfeited this game they asked for an update on player’s current residence as they knew him to be from an unstable housing situation. Turned out he had recently moved to Rider attendance zone and was thus ineligible.

I don’t know that you can “un-forfeit” which is probably why Graham loses too. No need for you to disparage the Hirschi community like that. The whole thing is stupid enough that they both deserve to lose in my opinion.

Graham never forfeited the game. Hirschi was declared the winner based on the score of the game when the fight occurred and the game was stopped.

Saying that the Hirschi community would riot over Graham being declared the winner is not disparaging them.  Some are calling the UIL and demanding that the Graham athletic program be dismantled.  If Graham was declared the winner of that game the entire Hirschi community would be constantly berating the UIL.

It sounded like you meant burning cars and smashing windows rioting. I think you meant to say there’d be an uproar. But even now this story isn’t much bigger than the high school football world. I don’t think a reaction factored much into their decision. Maybe a playoff game between bigger schools would be different.

DFW

Argyle @ Frisco Emerson  TONIGHT  Emerson opened last season, is playing their first varsity season of football; their mascot is the Mavericks, their uniforms looks like UNC, and they've never lost a varsity game (7-0).  That last fact changes tonight, when they run into the machine that is Argyle.

Aledo @ Burleson Centennial  They played their first varsity season in 2012, but I don't think anyone had ever paid attention to BC football until last week when they upset Ryan 23-16.  Their D is their calling card, with only 53 points allowed.  But Aledo has looked REALLY PISSED OFF since their 0-2 start, winning their last 3 by 193-14.  Aledo does have Ryan next week, but any chance they're looking ahead to that got destroyed last week.

Kaufman at Anna  This is #8 @ #5 in 4AD1  Anna is undefeated and led by a couple of D1 recruits.  Kaufman has a blemish thanks to very good 5A Crandall.  Anna has scored 276 in six games, while Kaufman has played a tougher schedule and has several close wins.  Toss a coin for this one.

TC Nelson @ Keller  Nelson is undefeated and is one of the highest-scoring teams in the state with a 340-57 point differential.  Keller played SLC down to the wire last week in a 38-35 heart-breaker, and you have to figure that it'll be hard to flush that one and get ready for another really good team.

Mansfield @ Duncanville  Both of these teams are undefeated, but I'm only putting it on here to remind me to look for the score, because this will be blowout.

McKinney @ Allen  McKinney has won 5 straight, averaging 50 ppg, since losing their opener at Temple.  Allen has pulled off a similar arc, but with fewer points (and more defense).  McKinney's 60-51 win over Braswell last week looks more like a loss to me; this weekend will correct the ledger on that, as Allen just has too much for the Lions.

HOUSTON

Foster @ Manvel  TONIGHT  Both of these teams could be in the discussion of best programs to not win state in the last decade.  Both have also slipped a bit in recent years;  I'm guessing that new schools opening has something to do with that.  Manvel has lost twice (Angelton and Shadow Creek) in 2022, while Foster's only loss was an uncharacteristic 12-7 slog with Mag West.  Foster's D has allowed only 33 points.  I like that to be the difference.

Hitchcock @ Columbus  People are sleeping on Hitchcock!  The Bulldogs won the small-school 7on7 state championship and have won their first 7 games, including a blowout of Refugio and a nice win over a tough Salado bunch.  Both of these teams are led by soph QBs.  Columbus's QB is Adam Schoebel, who threw for 2400 yards last season as a freshman, and whose father is a former NFLer and head coach at Columbus.   The biggest difference between the two teams is the Columbus D, as the Cardinals sport a 338-62 point differential.

COASTAL BEND

Alice @ Calallen  The Coyotes are 5-1 with only a loss to CC Vets, but Calallen looks like they don't miss Coach Danaher at all, with a 316-56 point diff.  Calallen won this game 37-0 last season.  It might be a little closer tomorrow, but I'll be shocked if it's actually close.

WEST TEXAS

Cisco @ Stamford  Stamford is undefeated and unranked, and allows only 9 ppg.  Cisco is ranked #8, though they lost a close game to ranked 3A Breckenridge.  Cisco also has good wins over tough teams from Wall and Jacksboro, so I think the rankings are correct and the Lobos will win this one.

Whitesboro @ Brock  Like the previous game, Whitesboro is undefeated and unranked, while Brock is ranked despite a 2-4 record.  Brock is definitely the better team, as they have played one of the toughest non-district slates I've ever seen (Tex Pleasant Grove, Hirschi, Wimberley, and Gunter).  The district opponents must look like JV teams.

CENTRAL TEXAS
China Spring @ Waco LaVega  LaVega has rebounded from an unheard of 3-game losing streak, pasting their last 3 opponents by 142-21.  But CS might be better than last season's state champs and they'll outclass the Lions in this one.

Bremond @ Granger  This is #10 @ #9 in 2AD2  2nd ranked opponent in a row for Bremond, as they're coming off a tough loss to Chilton.  Granger has won 4 in a row after an OT loss to Thorndale.  I picked Bremond last week, so I'll keep believing in them in spite of that loss.

AUSTIN

Round Rock @ Vandegrift  This is #19 @ #17 in 6A.  RR is D and running game.  Vandy has rebounded from a season-opening loss to Dripping that doesn't look bad at all now.  Since that loss, they've outscored 5 opponents 222-19.  Really high great game potential here, but I think the Vipers have a little too much.

Westlake @ Dripping   Maybe the biggest high school game ever played in Hays County?  Dripping is having no trouble with 6A, winning their games by a combined 294-40.  But the Chaps are at 321-78 and waaaaaaaaay better than anyone Drip has played.   I get the feeling that this is the year that Drip knocks on the door, but they're probably going to have to wait a couple of years to kick the sonofabitch in, as Oail Andrew Phillips would say.

SOUTH TEXAS

PSJA North @ McAllen Rowe  I've always had a soft spot for Rowe because they sound like they're named after a porn star.  Who can forget Ginger Lynn, Christy Canyon, and Nikki Rowe starring in Reform School Girls IV?  North's D has pitched a couple of shutouts already, and they've beaten a better team in Vela two weeks ago, so the Fighting Alphabets have to be considered the favorite here.

SAN ANTONIO

Reagan-Johnson  Saturday! The Stone Oak Super Bowl, where the records don't matter, even though both teams are 4-2.  Reagan has won 4 in a row after losing to SV and Round Rock to open the season.  Johnson is led by a soph QB.  They won this one 46-43 in OT last season.  Expect another shootout that goes down to the wire.

EAST TEXAS

Liberty Eylau @ Gilmer  Gilmer posted an impressive win over the other/tougher Texarkana school last week, beating rival PG 35-14.  TLE has had a nice season at 5-1, with only a loss at Sulphur Springs.  But they have 3 wins by less than a TD and they're not on the same level as the #2 Buckeyes.

We tied Columbus my junior year.  I had Bo Schobel lined up perfectly and went to cut him and he hurdled me.
