2023 Transfer Thread - Texas Capitalized, ATM Victimized

There will be a wide receiver added to the roster. Just like there will be a safety added to the roster and potentially a second wide receiver.

I don't necessarily agree with some of their personnel decisions of who to go after/not go after, but it's clear we have eyes on the portal and are looking to upgrade the roster when available. We did not offer Gavin Holmes immediately, but we liked what we saw when we did our research, offered, got him on campus and convinced him to forgo other visits he had planned and shut it down. We saw Ja'Had Carter enter, immediately jumped on him and got him down for a visit a few days later. It didn't work out but it wasn't for a lack of aggression.

Coming off back to back top 3 classes, the needs should be shrinking and the baseline talent of the roster should be raised to the point where immediate difference makers should be the focus. And just because a guy was a difference maker in the MAC, Sun Belt, FCS or Conference USA doesn't mean he would be a difference maker at Texas. Every player is different. Last year, it was trying to upgrade any position on the roster outside of RB. This year, the needs are a lot more focused to 2 or 3 areas. We now know from the last two portal classes that adding jags to the roster as "depth" accomplishes very little and more often than not our existing players on the roster end up being better than them anyway (hi Ovie Oghoufo, Ray Thornton, Ben Davis, DTD, Billingsley, Hall).

There are absolutely guys that have entered or who are currently in the portal that can play here so if we want to wring our hands over that or the positions we are or aren't focusing on then I guess that's fine, but I don't know how anyone can believe the coaches are satisfied with where the roster sits and just kicking their feet up when they just told our starting BUCK for the last 2 years that it would probably be best if he found a new home.

It's been said they would be probably be looking for 3-4 more guys, and they would be smart to save at least 1 and maybe 2 of those spots for the post spring window. So that leaves, what, 1 or 2 guys to be added by the end of this month?

Coach Choice, Jeff Banks, Brandon Harris and Texas ADOPP JM Jones just started following Utah RB Micah Bernard on twitter:

https://utahutes.com/sports/football/roster/micah-bernard/13171

JM Jones also just started following Michigan WR Andrel Anthony.  The 6'2" 190 pound WR has 19 catches for 328 yards and 4 tds in two seasons of play at Michigan.

A few portal notes from OB

Spoiler

A few Portal notes...

* There are still expectations the Longhorns will add a few pieces via the Portal before the Portal window closes on January 18th.

* It'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds, but the silence is by design. The last thing the coaches want to have to deal with is seeing other schools jump into their action because the news of their interest in Texas came out too early. One Big 12 coach told OB on Thursday that no one should be be surprised if a flood of players across the country enters the Portal next week right before the Portal closes, as we've continued to gain Intel that a lot of schools are essentially telling players to stay away from the Portal until the very end of the process in an effort to keep other schools from interfering with the work that has been done behind the scenes. Also, a lot of schools are using the full 48 hours that they have before inserting a player's name into the portal as a way of keeping other teams from gaining an advantage.

* Keep an eye on the wide receiver position. I expect Texas to target a couple of players at the position in the Portal.

* Word is getting out across the country that Georgia sophomore wide receiver Adonai Mitchell could enter the Portal once the national championship game is played against TCU. The 6-4, 190-pound Mitchell is originally from Missouri City, Texas, but he played his high school ball in Nashville. He has 8 receptions for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season, including 3 receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown last weekend against Ohio State in the national semi-final. His situation in the Portal (should he enter) will be one to watch.

As far as I've read, Bernard is more of an APB than a bruiser.

aggy just offered Anthony, as well as Burden from Bowling Green.

The mgoblog guys have long loved Anthony's upside. He had limited opportunity due to Michigan's many WR options and may have bad hands. But he's got good size, excellent speed, and good route running. OU offered already also.

It would be amazing if Stewart hit the portal last minute.

Adoni Mitchell will be interesting to watch.  Georgia just brought in two transfer WR's.  Lovitt kid from Missouri and Mississippi State WR.

Mitchell is a really good player. Just was hampered by the injury bug for a lot of this year but was basically 100% in the seminal game last weekend and it showed.

So hernia or sports hernia? Generally speaking, two distinct entities.

Micah Bernard is a really solid back. Culturally he is a great team fit, too. Two years ago against Ohio St in the Rose Bowl he volunteered to play CB because they were decimated with injury despite not even playing the position. He would be a great pickup.

The irony here is he is the second string back going into 2023 because former Texas QB Jackson is likely their starter.

And of course Jackson is now your big tough bruising back that the staff would take in an ideal world. Swings and roundabouts.

Starting to feel like we ain't going to get a portal WR.

we have 2 weeks left and then again in March. We will get someone but with the way the portal appears to be and Woodyard news, we need to start recruiting like some of the SEC we will play = tamper and a little extra, along with winning on the field.

As I'm an offseason optimist I will posit the theory that Brooks's hernia was a driving factor behind the strange RB rotation in the bowl game. He still got some run but they didn't want to put a starter's workload on him.

If I'm wrong you'll never convince me of it.

Did our crack staff of Longhorn reporters ever ask Sark why Brooks played 2nd fiddle after a month of them hyping up the Jonathan Brooks coming out party?

My semi-literate-Twitter-idiot-squid language skills are limited - broken at best - but that's definitely what it looks like is being implied (Harrison, Jr. to USC). If so, wow. Riley's just making more and more friends wherever he goes

Harrison might be the one player in the country I wish Texas would "break the bank" for if he really is leaving Ohio State to go to somewhere else.

*Finally, there’s a good chance Christian Jones will return to the program. Word is his draft grade wasn’t what he’d hope and he believes he can improve it by utilizing his Covid year.

Excellent.  Jones returns, Campbell and Williams at the Guard spots, and a competition for C.
