He'll win by double digits. Republicans can talk about how they don't like him, but they're still gonna vote for him.

If they show up.  He's going to have to work hard to find new things to scare them about, because all the current hits will be old and boring by then, and he's not exactly charismatic.

Anyone but Abbott !!!

Beto needs to hit the 15 biggest counties and El Paso with the fist of God. Tick the rest of the state. Hit those burbs hard. Abbott is out of touch with those moms in the burns. Beto also needs to get out the under 30 vote. It’ll be an uphill battle but the tide is slowly changing.

it is KEY, ignore everything outside the big cities and the I 35 corridor.

I'll take the under.  Somewhere between 7 and 9%.

Or never, it doesnt really matter.  He could probably lock down the election just on the topic of gun reform alone with as many gun nuts as there are in this state. Someone's gotta fight for the rights of 18 year olds to buy AR-15's.

Huffines has a better chance of stealing this election than Beto.

Abbott will be reduced to replaying his old hits and they won’t be enough to widen his lead on Beto. Those who don’t normally pay attention are tired of him and the rest of the old codgers who run this state.

Republicans will lose eventually. Eventually will be this year and it will start with Abbott.

The only reason the streak was broken was because some midget aggy made a rape joke and people were appalled. You can't shock the modern GQP.

True, but you can steadily improve the voter engagement of Texas which is already on the upswing and which doesn’t bode well for Republicans.

He said a lot of other shit too. The rape comment was the cherry on top of the mound of shit. Not paying taxes was another issue but these days that's just speaking your mind and being a good businessman to Republicans.

That’s too soft. He needs to lead the fight to get that age lowered.

We can agree to disagree. If you actually think Beto has a chance you can get approx 10X your money over on predictit.org. Dont get me wrong, I'll vote for him. I'm just a realist.

Just wanted to add I still think Beto has a "puncher's chance" for the following reasons:

1. the narrative on gun control has shifted, which blunts criticism of his earlier remarks on gun control;

2. Republicans control this state - not Joe Biden. Remind voters of that - when things aren't good people want to blame the party in power. Biden isn't on the ballot, but Abbott sure is.

But that's about it and #2 is a tougher sell.

3. (although this could fall under #2) Abbott does not exactly inspire the cult to get out the way Trump or even DeSantis does.  We are barely a year out from Allen West heading up the Texas Republican Party and the previous year, he was trying to use the party against Abbott, up to and including holding protests at the Texas Governors Mansion over mask mandates, vaccines etc.  It was October of 2020 when Allen West, Sid Miller, etc. were protesting https://www.texastribune.org/2020/10/10/protest-greg-abbott-governors-mansion/

Many of the GQP don't care that Abbott later swung wide right in the summer of last year and banned mask mandates, tried to fight the school districts over masking, etc., the damage was already done in their eyes, as Abbott spent far much of 2020 and into 2021 siding with those librool CDC people.

And that's something else that Beto and Co. need to remind folks of - Abbott's war on the school districts, when he was trying to dictate what every school district in the state could or could not do, even though those school districts all had their own locally elected school boards that held them accountable.

But anyways, Abbott is just not an inspiring leader at all.  It's nothing to do with the wheelchair, it's nothing to do with the fact that Abbott has been either Texas AG or Texas Governor for the last 20 years and apparently couldn't fix the border in that time, it's just that here in 2022 he's a weak-ass uninspiring candidate (compared to Trump/DeSantis).

I'm surprised we haven't had Abbott do a Jeb Bush "please clap for me" moment.

He came very close - closer than any Texas Democrat in decades - to winning a statewide election.

And his strategy of visiting every single county - no matter how red - was a huge part of his campaign.

I can’t count the number of anecdotes I heard about people who changed their minds about him after seeing him in person.

He does retail old school politics very well.

Women will punish Abbott for his war on women’s health. That, along with weed will be the difference.

I had believed this for the longest time, but it just seems like the republicans keep on keeping on. Texas republicans are as stubborn and hard to beat as Florida republicans.

It seems like republicans in both of these states have pulled in Hispanics to offset their losses with old people dying off. It really sucks, but looks like it’s reality.

Yep, the shocking and inexplicable defection of RGV hispanics to the GQP is the nail in the coffin for our hopes to turn the state blue or even purple.

it was Cute but flawed strategy

He’s not going to the numbers needed outside the top 15 counties

Will Abbott show up for a debate ?

Nope.  No way in hell will he be willing to debate Beto.  The people who would consider voting for Abbott would never vote for Beto, so there's no downside to Abbott skipping the debate.

Plus, Abbott has too much baggage that could be used against him in a debate, and while it wouldn't sway Republicans, it might get more non-Republicans off their asses and out to vote.

I don’t know that there is anything left for Abbott to demagogue that will widen his small lead over Beto.  He has big vulnerabilities and he knows it. If the Dems reach their 2 million new voter number and they vote 2018 numbers, Abbott could lose.

I'm also interested in any plan to eliminate property tax that doesn't include a state income tax. That's a pipe dream.

Huffines was going hard on that, probably because he's a developer and it would save a lot of money for those types.

And he had absolutely no actual plan for replacing the revenue.  I mean, he threw shit out there, but the options just sounded like they'd end up making most of us pay a lot more.

Yeah, me too. My total tax burden increased significantly when I moved from a state with an income tax to TX. Property taxes in TX are complete bullshit.

what does "Ban Democrat chairs" mean?

Replace all comfortable and functional chairs in the state with those awful metal folding chairs. The ones that make your ass and legs fall asleep immediately.

If Abbott has to sit in a chair with no feeling in his ass and legs, so do the rest of us.

Anything else would be socialism.
