I’ve been in Texas for over 30 years after coming to the University for grad school.. but grew up in OK and went to State.

Gundy used up all goodwill for his success with OSU when he survived dismissal and renegotiated his contract in the offseason. The start to this season has donors ready to revolt. Gundy was offered the chance to announce his retirement now for after the season and coach out. Not surprisingly he refused. AD believed he had to move now to save BMDs and (probably incorrectly) his own job.

Agree with all that, I was just pulling Trophy Oak’s leg for saying it wouldn’t happen…

A 50 year-old punter always wearing a tank top and trying hard to bro out like he is 25 is just embarrassing.  Saban looks like he wants to puke if you see cuts from their prep on set and in commercial breaks.

Surprisingly, he's 38. Your point still stands.

I’m pretty sure Weiberg had to do it to now to keep the BMDs and therefore his job. Rumor is if he couldn’t pull it out Mike Holder was gonna be called to get it done and keep them happy. His contract expired this summer and was renewed today.

Why did Tuberville run for Senate?

Why did Mack Brown take another job after 6 years of retirement?

Gundy will either enter the political sphere or be in a new job after a year or two off.

He could sell speeches to 39 year old head coaches!

No.

I had a very different experience on the way to Kyle (the one bad part of the trip).  One of my buddies got separated from the rest of us wandering into the game, and I'm yelling at him over the phone out front of Kyle Field, undoubtedly dropping F-bombs, when some unhinged old guy runs up to me (I'm like 23 at this point) and almost rips the phone at of my hand and starts screaming at me about how "WAY DON'T TALLK LIKE THAT IN FRUNT OF WIMMIN SUN".  I was just utterly shell shocked, and his entourage quickly peeled him away from me before I had a chance to even consider a reaction.

My buddies and I just stand there stunned, when some other guys our age run up to us and say "Y'all know who that was?  You just got your ass chewed by RC Slocum?".

Utterly surreal moment.  We found my buddy shortly after, and then he dropped an F bomb during the game, and some lady behind us grabbed a state trooper, who drug us up to the concourse and threatened to arrest us for public intox.

Everyone else was pretty cool though.

My collie station experience was as a member of the OSU marching band (NERDS!!!) and we were told to keep our equipment close because their band/corp was known to try and steal shit. The corp was later caught trying to steal the OSU flag and were confronted by the male cheerleaders who took it back from them. The corp "leader" then pretended to yell at them for trying to steal our shit but was almost certainly for getting caught. Oh, and the aggy parade went right by us pregame and when the kids with shovels following the horses went by we yelled at them "Way to shovel that shit bro!" or something to that effect. They were not happy with us lol.

It’s the ties that bind us.  We can all revel in aggy retardedness.

my nephew that I mentioned previously that went to A&M for a year (semester? Not sure)  and transferred to OSU, when we went to an Aggy game against New Mexico St. to support him (he wasn’t happy), my favorite memory, besides them seemingly “sawing em off” twice a quarter and thinking that it was weird they got off to something so incredibly lame so many times a game, was some fat aggy oldster a couple rows behind us scolding an Aggie kid for booing a call.  “Aggies don’t boo, son”.  It’s been 6 or 7 years and we still mock that around our house frequently.

Your later post said you went to a game with him and heard an oldster telling a kid not to boo.

He should have been in the student section with his peers and you should have been in the visitor section and met up with him later.

Can’t blame him for being upset about having to hang with olds at the game.

Guys we found GJ Kinne's accounts

It's in the numbers.  I haven't run them in a couple of years, but in when I last did it in 2020:

39 G5 HC had been poached by P5 programs in the previous 10 years.
82% of those had a 10 win season within their 1st 5 years (a couple had a previous 10 W season at another G5).
The other 18% had been a coordinator at that P5, a coordinator at a Top 5 P5, had a relationship w/ a bigtime donor, or resurrected Temple.
From 2016-2020, the numbers were even more stark: 14/17 G5 -> P5 hires had a 10 win season in their 1st 5 years, 10 of those in the 1st 4 years.

Traylor and Morris are much more likely to get the gig than Kinne.

Traylor has much more experience in P4, has 5+ years as HC w/ proven results: 2 Conf Titles; 12, 11, 9 win seasons; 6 bowl games.  UTSA has shit NIL and a G5 coach that doesn't move up after winning 10 games is more likely to be fired than find long term success at that G5 (couldn't see that there, but just saying).  Pat Hill types are rare.

Morris has 5+ years HC experience, more P5 experience, was absolutely the UIW architect, and most importantly, can probably bring his QB with him.  Same recruiting area.  Also, UNT and Denton are a dump in tornado alley.  He's getting paid peanuts @ $1.3M.

Kinne was an early adopter of the portal, and it's worked well for us, but on a razor's edge. Only 3 years of HC experience.  4-6 vs 0.500+ teams, 2-0 in bowl games, does have a P4 W. My biggest complaint:  losses to really shitty teams last year kept us from that 10 win mark.  I personally think he's waiting for Baylor.

Cool story but no thanks on the coach. Sounds like Gundy who also said he finally “embraced” it and clearly did not and was still bitching at the end. I don’t trust anyone at this point who has complained about the new system at any time. I want someone who fully bought in to the portal and NIL from the beginning and will use it correctly at a place like OSU. Expect some players will get poached and genuinely wish them well publicly and privately. Have a plan to find a portal replacement. I’m starting to see a dichotomy of old timers (and old souls) who will never adjust and young guys who are all in and embrace the new system. I want one of those young guys. All assuming the OSU administration has the donor money lined up by the seasons end of course.

So Morris you know they are not good enough to play for a bigger program, that means they have zero chance to ever make it to the NFL but you want them to stay and miss out on earning some setup money for after graduation? Fuck this guy, I hope parents are listening.

Yeah I didn't wanna say anything earlier but honestly Eric Morris is a fucking tool. I appreciate that he played for Tech and was pretty good for us and I wish him the best, but I've had a number of personal interactions with the guy back in my days working in sports media and almost every single person that I worked with/spoke to and he came up said the same thing. He's just a complete prick. To everyone. And he's not a good enough coach to get worked up about, at any rate.

It's understandable to bitch about the portal when you're at a small school that's going to do a lot of feeding to the bigger programs to an extent, but I'd still stay away from the guy.

Okie State better give Gundy his props when they erect his statue and make sure it has a full, flowing mullet.

A statue for winning the B12 once? That's an awful low bar to be given a statue. But it is OSU. Maybe that's the highest mountain they'll ever climb.

His 170 wins is 108 more than any prior coach. Multiple top ten finishes and BCS/NY6 Bowl games. The program was a club sport prior to his tenure. He’ll be honored eventually, at least the ring of honor. He’ll also remain my avatar, a high honor indeed.

Sure it's not a massive Jimbo Fisher number but, I still find it incredible that these guys - in the two major collegiate sports - get paid so much to just go away.

He had 1 losing season from 2005-2023 and I think they finished 10-4 as recently as 2023.

OSU has a pretty great history for their overall W/L.  Jimmy Johnson kicked off his head coaching career there.  Les Miles starting eating grass there.  Barry Sanders is and always will be the GOAT RB.  I talk shit but honestly it’s sad seeing what’s happened there.

Gundy had always stated that he couldn't recruit a certain caliber of athlete because "they don't want to come here".

I'd have to imagine that without some serious financial support that OkSt may have cratered itself.

Gundy had been butting heads with insiders for years. It was somewhat public that he and Mike Holder did not get along and that he was not friendly with Boone Pickens in his later years. Rumors have swirled for years that he had lost the trust of some of the regents and some of the donors. After last season there was a regents meeting where Weiburg and then President Shrum clearly took up for him and left the meeting looking despondent despite saving his job. More rumors came out that he was not getting along with even his own coaching staff. The last two abortions of games were clearly the last straw with the remaining regents and donors. Basically, it sounds like he's been sort of an ass behind closed doors for years and winning is what kept his job. The results the last two years have not been bad, they've been attrocious, completely noncompetitive. It was time to move forward with there no longer being a rift of Gundy supporters and detractors. Even those who still like him know it's time for a change. Hopefully we can start anew this offseason with everyone on the same page including the donors.

He made them relevant for twenty years during a time when college football was experiencing unprecedented growth in popularity and constant change. Without Gundy--even with T. Boone's $--they likely would have been replacing HCs every 3-5 years and would have been less than an afterthought.

He got them within a missed FG of possibly playing for a BCS championship. If anyone doesn't think that will be the highlight of their program's history a decade or two from now (and LOL at the 1945 or whatever championship they decided to claim & plaster all over their endzone 15 years ago) then they're crazy. They're not built to compete in this new era.

The bagman game was so much easier and cheaper in the 80's. We're not gonna see Thurman Thomas or Hart Lee Dykes around Stillwater for the foreseeable future. They've gotta develop 3-stars like they've been doing or find late bloomers, diamonds in the rough types from FCS and lower programs.

IMO, it's gonna take a high-energy young guy. Gundy was great for OSU, but he lost his edge the past couple of years. This NIL era apparently soured him on recruiting.

Agreed with everything you said and he made them relevant, again. But...a statue for that? It's not like Bill Snyder in his remaking of KState. Absolutely no one gave a shit about KSU before Snyder.

OSU won a NC in the 40s with Lookabaugh. I don't believe OSU has anything to honor him. It'd be pretty stupid to give Gundy a statue for 1 Conf Championship and forget the guy who gave them a NC.

OSU did not win a NC in 1945. They did not. This was your 1945 NC:

 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_Army_Cadets_football_team

Army was an all star team (literally, players were snatched from other squads, like freshman AA Bill Yeiman plucked from the Ags). Army had two Heisman winners. They shut out five opponents, two of whom were ranked in the top 10. Army was undefeated 1944-1946. Army received every single #1 vote in the final AP poll. It may be the most dominant team in a season, ever.

OSU finished #5, really good for a MVAC team. They may claim a MNC, but no rational person acknowledges it.
