At this point, not sure it would have mattered. He is who he is. Looks great at times but not enough. And this was against college defenses and speed with a stacked offense. Also, this QB class was extremely pedestrian. If you are drafted this low in this class, that says a lot about what scouts are seeing. They are unbiased and care zero about Texas. Too many on here discuss Quinn with burnt orange glasses and understandable. All the flaws so many were talking about in this thread over his tenure here, were main reasons why he was drafted so low. Quinn was not even close to the reasons why Texas got as far as they did the last 2 seasons but he was one of the main reasons why the season ended in the semifinals round, though. And the main reason they couldn't win the SEC against a spare Georgia backup.

So basically if we maintain D an average QB will get us a title?

Quinn will look better than “MILF” during the next pre-season games, so he’s only one bad Tua sack from playing in the NFL.

Why would you think that a 7th round pick is automatically going to be the 2nd string QB?

Ewers was sometimes amazing and sometimes incredibly frustrating to watch. I think Miami is a great opportunity for him; he can learn from some good offensive minds, and with those guys ahead of him, he'll probably see real playing time soon. I think that if he dedicates himself to the job, he's going to be a great one, and make bank on his second contract.

Mike wahoo McDaniels vs surly mouth breathers.
who would you go with?

Quote

Early life

McDaniel was born in the small town of Bernice, Louisiana, in 1938. His family was Choctaw-Chickasaw,[5] and he was a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. His father Hugh, worked in the oil industry and moved to several towns before settling down in Midland, Texas.[4] He attended Midland High School, where he was a track state champion in the shot put and second in the state in the discus.[6] One of his baseball coaches, particularly for his Pony League team, was George H. W. Bush.[2][6][7] The name "Wahoo" actually came from his father, who was known as "Big Wahoo".[7][4] Though he was a problematic teenager, he was recruited to the University of Oklahoma by Bud Wilkinson.[2] While attending, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and also a part of Wilkinson's Sooners football program, where he holds the record for the longest punt at 91 yards.[4]

Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time.

I also preface my belief in Quinn to see this “wake up call” to work on his game and be a professional from here on out. I wish him nothing but the utmost success going forward! Even if he only holds a clipboard for a decade.

quinn wasn’t “a five star recruit”, of which there 20-25 of every year- he was one of 6 (now 7) ever to receive a 1.000 recruiting grade. the only other two QBs to get that rating are Vince Young and Arch Manning. is he the biggest recruiting miss of the modern era? i don’t know, i haven’t followed this crap since ryan perriloux. but at the end of the day when he’s compared to VY and Arch, he’s definitely gong to pale in comparison. in fact it’ll probably be interesting to see how he compares to garrett gilbert when all is said and done.

Man that list sort of not 1.000 in the pros

Sarks NFL relationships seem to be relevant enough for his colleagues to take flyers on his players in the late rounds. JWhitt benefited from that last class. I had strong doubts about Quinn following that OU game, and I just became more critical as the season progressed. It was so obvious that teams like Arkansas, Kentucky, and A&M didn’t belong on the same field as us. Yet we couldn’t pull away. Hell the SEC championship was served up on a silver platter. That being said, have so much love and respect for anyone who wears that Burnt Orange. I hope he makes the most out of this opportunity.

not really though. more people have been openly critical of QE without repercussions (and even with plenty of pos rep!) over the past 3-4 days than ever before. the countless nfl scouts and pundits who straight up were like, “this kid just isn’t that good and will never be a starter in the nfl” combined with quinn very nearly being an UDFA has allowed dissenters such as myself to openly tell the truth about quinn, his lack of talent, and how he is the no.1 reason that Texas isn’t the current back to back defending national champs, without an onslaught of seething and incredulous responses. people who even two days ago were going to battle with the QE realists have finally backed down and relented. the dynamic in this thread has shifted drastically during this draft.

Quinn is a practice / camp arm for this year.

It would be shocking if he played a regular snap this season. And if he does, the head coach is fired during/after this season.

Tyler Huntley 5 games

Skylar Thompson 3 games

Tim Boyle 2 games

Odds are high he plays a snap if he survives camp

Chad Pennington played for 11 years and couldn’t throw the ball more than 35 yards

quinn ewers isn’t good enough to play for Texas in 2025, i have a really hard time seeing him suddenly becoming good enough to start an nfl game.

QE realists have finally backed down.

We won’t really know until Quinn gets a shot in the NFL, if he does get the actual chance to play. Between draft prognosticators and the whiplash of opinion on this board, nobody knows crap. There’s not really been that much of a seismic shift in opinions from a segment of the fanbase that gets their panties wadded up every time an opponent scores a touchdown against Texas. Especially when Quinn made mistakes, which in fairness, was worrisome for an experienced college quarterback.

what at all have you seen from QE that leads you to believe he’s an NFL qb? he’s not even a particularly notable college qb despite being surrounded by elite talent and elite QB coaching. he’s also making the same mistakes and showing the same poor mechanics as he was last year, despite being coached by the best QB coach in the country. in an era where freshman QBs win heisman trophies and put up obscene numbers while playing spectacularly, QE being a 3rd year guy who isn’t in the top 50% of best players in his own offense does not portend well for his future as an NFL qb.

They were graded for being college recruits, not NFL players. I don't think any were graded as perfect by NFL scouts...well maybe Clowney was.

A lot of people taking the opportunity to kick Ewers while he’s down and exaggerate their grievances. He’s far from the elite talent we were told he was coming out of high school and I think some will forever be bitter about that. Nevertheless, if he chooses to work hard, make some difficult adjustments to his inner-circle, and adapt, he’ll make a career out of quarterbacking in the NFL about on par with Drew Lock. He’ll likely never be a franchise guy, but few are. That’s okay. I’m just thankful he was a Longhorn.

Seriously dude, that’s sad. This is a sports board; what did you ‘win’?

i just spent the last 15 minutes going over posts from november of 2023 where the people on this board *crushed me*, and not in an, “i disagree with your takes” type of way, but in a, “i fucking hate you, nobody loves you, you’re a piece of shit” type of way, all because i had the gall to not blindly anoint QE and to have a differing opinion. i attacked no one; i was not insulting; and yet not only was i relentlessly attacked with personal shit talk, but i was then blamed for “derka’ing the thread”, when in fact i was the only civil person among the dozen+ people posting in the conversation. oh and in the end, i was right after all. and now you suddenly have a problem with me bringing that back up and pointing it out? too fucking bad. walk a mile in my shoes and then get back at me.

oh yeah, the cherry on top? not only was i posting non-combative, non-insulting, earnest football takes and getting relentless personal shit talk in return, someone even posted, “no one here is attacking you, people are just disagreeing with you and you can’t handle it.” i then quoted 10 different ad hominem personal attacks aimed at me from that day alone, and absolutely nobody even acknowledged it. it’s maga levels of self delusion and hatred that i’ve had to put up with. and you want me to just sit back and take it? no thank you.

this routine where you guys get to be humongous pieces of shit to me for my (again, CORRECT but unpopular) football takes, but then you’ve suddenly got a huge problem with when i decide to call those people out for it? yeah, fuck all that. don’t start none won’t be none. you don’t get the moral high ground when you’re the asshole.

That's just kind of the Internet.

I've been calling out Ewers here since the 2023 season when he just wouldn't take the next step and wasn't showing improvement. People shit all over me for it. Blacklab bans me about once every month or two.

Who cares? It was obvious to anyone who could put aside the homer blinders that the guy wasn't improving, and especially this 2024 season where he held the offense back a ton. Everyone wanted to believe he was the perfect 1.000 rating QB they were told he was. I wanted to see him develop into that guy and win us a national championship with the best defense in the country this season. He never did it.

We ended up being right.  So just bring it up, take some shots, and move on. No reason to get upset about it.

He had a top rated defense and 22 draft picks in '23 and '24 carrying him. He wasn't Ehlinger out there trying to do it with only a couple of dudes that would even be drafted.

Sark, PK, and the defense raised the bar. The QB and offense lagged. It's time to for that to be corrected in 2025.

the back half of the year i seem to recall us struggling to get first downs after half time, forget scoring TDs. we had some incredibly ugly, frustrating, ineffective second halves from our offense, meanwhile the defense was the best we’ve had in a decade+, and probably one of the 5 best in school history. the imbalance in what the defense did for us vs how QE and Auburn failed to fulfill their duties was a shame.

So respond like you did. But no one is ever going to tell you that you were right and they were wrong. That doesn't happen. People will stick to the dumbest of ideas and stupidest of decisions (look at Washington DC) for life just to avoid admitting they were wrong.
