Even when guys were getting drafted under Mack they had the reputation of being soft. To see what we have now and our guys excelling in the league is very very good.

In the NFL Draft, i think it was CBS Sports that listed the Favorite Pick, Best Value & Most Surprising Pick for each team:

2. Tennessee Titans: A+    Most surprising pick: Gunnar Helm
5. San Francisco 49ers: A+    Favorite pick: Alfred Collins
18. Miami Dolphins: A    Most surprising pick: Quinn Ewers
21. Philadelphia Eagles: A-    Best value: Cameron William
28. Denver Broncos: B-    Favorite pick: Jahdae Barron
29. Green Bay Packers: B-    Favorite pick: Matthew Golden

It was posted elsewhere that Jahdae Barron and Matthew Golden were Saban's and Herbstreit's favorite picks.

I gotta be honest. I'm hardly following recruiting any more. I'm just assuming that we're getting 90%-ish of the top targets and then they are going to backfill any roster misses through the portal.

It's great being the Joneses and all, and lord knows that we took it in the ass from Ohio State, Georgia, Bama, LSU etc. for far too many years and it feels good to turn the tables on those fuckers... but the ins and outs of recruiting isn't all that interesting to me any longer. Is that just me?

There is some truth to the idea that this board is actually livelier when we stink, because recruiting is all we have when the product on the field is bad.

But also, Sark waits a while to push for commitments, which makes a good chunk of the calendar uneventful. We only have 5 commits right now and one of them is a long snapper.

It's probably just you. That said, the recruits aren't really on Twitter anymore besides just as a marketing tool and half of the breaking news has migrated to the most boring content delivery system known to man aka daily podcasts, so there's less personality and wit floating around for the boards to sink their teeth into.

The summer time recruiting meltdowns are enjoyable.

Dakorien Moore picking Oregon and DT recruiting going to shambles last summer were great "our pets' heads are falling off" moments.

If I had to pick two spots where we could see something similar this year, I am picking our top RB targets committing elsewhere and Turntine committing elsewhere.

To be clear, I don't hope those things happen. But I think those things happening will cause the Surly servers to reach their max temperature thresholds.

Also the timeline is mattering more and more. Used to be February-March was big in recruiting before spring practices opened up. Now that timeline has shifted to summertime and all the OV's plus the follow up of those visits with commits, top 3/5/10/20 etc.

Recruting hasn't changed for the people who get excited nationally about players. There's a lot of things that are going on that make recruiting harder to follow, and a lot of that has to do with the way this staff operates. They are in a position where they offer late and only the people that actually want to be here are coming to OV and unofficials etc. With NIL it's also a lot more muted on weird purely emotional decisions, there's too much at stake for these guys to fuck around and go to some dumbass coach who smooth talks them.

This is easily been the most enjoyable time to be a Longhorn fan in the last 15 years.

I preferred the Strong & Herman years.

Where have you gone, David Garvin?

I’m a follower of TX HS football. It’s cool to see a player you recall hearing about or seeing highlights of as a freshman/soph get an offer. But yeah I never saw and still can’t see any excitement in “Texas extended an offer to generic 4-5 star Buford GA/Mater Dei CA player today”. We’re going to get highly rated classes every year, no matter what.

I am enjoying it and it remains interesting, but for some people I think the vast number of blue chip prospects that are now interested in Texas creates recruiting overload.  Easier to follow/remember/covet x number of prospects than xxx number.  For myself, I am no longer having large mood swings regarding the recruitment of a particular player.  Which is what makes this so fabulous; I know we're going to wind up with a tremendous class. Trust the corches may still be a bit idealistic, but it's no longer a punchline.

I feel the exact same. I can hardly be bothered to learn the names of individual recruits at this point, and that's fine by me honestly.

Maybe we've just learned to take HS recruiting with a more measured outlook. That's partly due to the twists and turns of the portal. I was so giddy about Bru finally making his way to Austin...only to have that short stay turn out to be a dud. I lamented missing out on Makuba...and then he ended up being a star for us. Still grind my teeth over some of the HS misses, but our program is bigger than any one player.

Gents, it's May. We're not down to the wire on anything. The big name prospects are going to wait until Summer and some we even wait until December.

Remember how the Justus Terry recruitment went last year? That was a huge deal and a really fun one to win.

You'll enjoy recruiting more in a few months. It's just dead right now so it's not as interesting. But there will definitely be one or two guys in the top-10 nationally that we get excited about.

Performing the mental gymnastics required to convince yourself that likes of Tristan Nickleson, Marcel Southall, and Kennedy Lewis were all just underrated diamonds in the rough really made it more rewarding to follow recruiting.

There's no real reason to pay attention to this stuff until about mid October at the earliest. Last summer by August everyone here was freaking out about the DT class and other things then it all turns around in season. NIL makes it where a ton of decisions aren't really made until the dollars hit the table.

OTF says Jalen Lott is looking at committing on July 4th.

Dakorien Moore committed on July 4th last year.

My body is ready for this.

You wouldnt be saying this if OU and Aggie were performing up to standard. The fact that both are shitting the bed, at least at Herman levels and nearing Strong levels, unquestionably lowers the stakes in recruiting.

Listen guys, I enjoy blowjobs from supermodels as much as the next guy, and after having a decade plus of zero female contact, or at best maybe a dry handy from a fat desperate neighbor, sure, this all feels great. But having to just roll over and yawn before fucking whatever 10 I want has sort of, I don't know...taken away the whole excitement involved with the chase? It's kind of souring the whole situation for me. Anyone else?

So, Tom Loy and Brandon Huffman did a 247 stream and discussed Mark Bowman.

Both guys like Texas in this recruitment, and think we're the team to beat.  Johnny Nansen was just there visiting, and they referred to the presence of Spencer Shannon (from Mater Dei) at Texas.

They also discussed USC as a threat - their surge in recruiting, the presence of Chad Bowden (GM w/ Cal ties) at USC, and a Mater Dei DL (and Bowman's team mate) who just flipped from Oregon to USC.  USC is also recruiting a Mater Dei edge in the current class.

🤞  🤞  🤞

Edits/adds:

- Also, USC mod said there are a few folks around Bowman, that aren't fans of USC.

- And said Texas sending Nansen probably helps USC (not sure if snark, or suggesting someone else from Texas would have been better).  Loy/Huffman just said Nansen had contacts and experience recruiting the West Coast ... didn't suggest anything negative

- Luke Sorensen, who had been CBed to USC, got a CB flip to Penn State

- And ... a USC poster who's considered an insider, keeps saying Bowman's a silent/lock to USC.  Fuck him.  W/ or w/o a Trojan.

How we feeling about this one?

None of us should feel good at this point. Nothing is complete or certain,  either.

That’s Finley. Lott is down to us, Oregon, and maybe another.

Brandl got a standing O at the end of the semester back when I had him for some  finance class. Finance 354, maybe? He’s always been a bad ass professor.
