Top247 EDGE Luke Wafle includes Texas in cut to four schools

Will Turboff (Horns 247)

Two weeks before he begins his summer official visit schedule, Princeton (N.J.) Hun School Top247 EDGE Luke Wafle has revealed that he's cut his list of 30 offers to a small, select group.

In a social media post shared on Tuesday, four finalists were announced, namely Texas, USC, Penn State, and Ohio State.

Wafle's announcement comes just one month after he traveled to Austin for the fourth time to meet with Steve Sarkisian, LaAllan Clark, and several others within the program.

Following that visit, Horns247's Hank South spoke with David Wafle, Luke's father, about what stands out with the Longhorns.

"Texas is huge. We love it there. Very excited to get down for the OV." the elder Wafle said in April.

While the 6-foot-5.5, 245-pound pass rusher's brother Owen recently made the move from Penn State to Michigan, that is not expected to be a major factor throughout the rest of Wafle's recruitment.

Additionally, Wafle had recently scheduled an official visit with Florida, but that is now considered to be off the table.

Before he returns to Texas on June 20, the nation's No. 55 prospect will see Ohio State (May 30) and Penn State (June 6). An official visit date at USC hasn't yet been revealed.

Other way around. Transferred from Michigan to Penn State. Seems like it probably holds more weight than analysts currently think.

Penn State football fans are cultish blockheads and populate New Jersey in massive numbers. That will be the hometown pick.

USC can stand to share a recruit or two. They somehow already have 27 commits!

Yeah, have to think that’ll change if Lincoln really pusses out and cancels the annual ND game.

Is this a thing? Surely the USC alumni base wouldn’t accept that.

Speculation on social media was posted in the USC thread on the football board. I really hope it’s not true. I know Lincoln’s a bitch, but I kind of like him for fucking over OU. This would definitely change that. USC-ND is one of the five or so most important games that make college football what it is in my opinion. Would absolutely hate to see it go.

USC - ND is a funny one in how it's a big annual game between true bluebloods with lots of historic relevance, and yet it's a surprisingly low energy matchup. The fanbases don't dislike each other, they're rarely good at the same time these days, it's just all a bit sedate and country clubby.

Ranked as a CB. Tons of production at WR. Just an awesome athlete, overall.

Here is a recent eval overview from Gabe Brooks at 247:

  Reveal hidden contents

One of the best pure football players in the country, reflected by absurd production on both sides of the ball across multiple Texas 6A varsity seasons. Dynamic three-phase playmaker who lacks ideal measurables and frame specs, but possesses wiry tendon strength shown in ball skills, run-after-catch strength, and surprising striking power for such a lean cover man. Ball skills magician. Immense production at receiver: nearly 3,000 yards and 35 touchdowns in sophomore-junior seasons. Also recorded eight INTs and scored four non-offensive TDs in that span. Junior season revealed noticeable improvement in speed-changing nuance and general RAC ability. Accelerates well and has shown enhanced top-end speed year over year. Checks the multi-sport box with varsity basketball experience and junior high and freshman track and field reps. Clearly lacks mass and owns a narrow build that could limit bulking capacity. Past testing data suggests need for improved top-end gear, though functional field speed shows that. Legitimate candidate to play two-way snaps at the P4 level. High school profile similar to players such as Kamari Lassiter, Ladd McConkey, Jordan Addison, perhaps even Travis Hunter in recent years. Projects as a high-major impact player who could become an early-round draft candidate.

FOOTBALL
2024: As a junior, caught 83 passes for 1,565 yards and 18 TDs on 18.9 yards per reception. Also ran 6 times for 45 yards and 1 TD. Recorded 26 tackles, 3 INTs, 2 FF, and 6 pass breakups. Added 1 kick return TD.
2023: Texas District 13-6A Utility Player of the Year as a sophomore. Caught 80 passes for 1,414 yards and 17 TDs, while running for 384 yards and 7 TDs on nearly 15 yards per carry. Also recorded 37 tackles, 2 TFL, and 5 INTs, including 1 return TD. Added 1 KR TD on special teams.
2022: Texas District 13-6A Defensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. Recorded 49 tackles, 2 TFL, and 5 INTs (1 TD return). Got 5 offensive touches for 62 yards (4-60 rushing) and 1 TD. Averaged 21.2 yards on 17 kick return opportunities.
- Gabe Brooks

Also, former KSU QB and huge ass thorn in Texas’ backside, Michael Bishop, is his cousin.

A huge ass thorn that one time we played him?

I agree that it's relatively low energy these days. "They're rarely good at the same time" factors heavily into that.

However, I know very good friends who are UG alums of both, and each despises the other school - and I'm your age. The olds hate the opposite school even more. For anyone who gives a damn about football at either, I can tell you that they do not like the other.

Recruiting News: New Fitzpatrick OV date; Texas trending in battles

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - The Texas Longhorns knocked the April unofficial visit out of the park with 4-star++ CB/N Justice Fitzpatrick (Fort Lauderdale/St. Thomas Aquinas) last month.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder didn't hold back with his praise for the Longhorns.

"I definitely had a great visit over there. Especially knowing Coach O (Orphey) already. We have a good relationship. And building a relationship with Coach Akina, knowing he's a legendary defensive backs coach."

Fitzpatrick also dropped some new regarding official visits. He will make his Texas OV June 20-22, a change from the 13-15th. He will make OV's to Georgia May 30-June 2, Miami June 6-8, Florida June 9-10 and Ohio State June 13-15 prior to Texas.

Georgia has been considered the team to beat the entire way due to long standing family relationships with Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann.

Sunshine State battles ...

OnTexasFootball gives percentages for top targets in the Sunshine State.

Samuel Roseborough, OT, 4-star++ (Clearwater/High) - 70%

Kendall Guervil, DL, 4-star++ (Fort Myers/High) - 65%

James Johnson, DL, 4-star++ (Miami/Northwestern) - 40%

Justice Fitzpatrick, DB, 4-star++ (Fort Lauderdale/St. Thomas Aquinas) - 45%

Derrek Cooper, RB, 5-star (Hollywood/CXhaminade-Madonna) - 35%

Jake Kreul, EDGE, 4-star++ (Orlando/IMG Academy) - 30%

Couple of notes ...

Xavier Griffin, LB, 5-star (Gainesville, Ga./High) - OTF posted Wednesday afternoon that Texas coaches were making an in-home visit with the USC decommit. The coaches are also expected to be at Gainesville High today for spring practice. Texas will receive a June 13-15 OV, and have as good of a shot as any. Texas' competition is Alabama and Ohio State, with FSU on the peripheral.

Luke Wafle, EDGE, 4-star++ (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School) - OTF is expecting a decision a Texas vs. Penn State decision for the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder from the Garden State. Wafle has been to Texas three times already, and will return June 20-22 for an OV. LaAllen Clark and Kyle Flood are expected at The Hun School Monday.

Davon Benjamin, DB, 4-star++ (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) - OTF was told by a source that Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey and area recruiting Johnny Nansen are expected by Oaks Christian early next week for a second time in May. Benjamin is scheduled to make his OV to Texas June 6-8, and the Texas staff is leaving zero doubt that the Longhorns are all in on the 6-foot, 175-pound versatile DB.

OL recruiting ...

Texas coaches Johnny Nansen and Kyle Flood made a trip to Honolulu last week to see 4-star+ Malakai Lee (Honolulu, Hi./Kamehameha). And make no mistake, the 6-foot-6, 320-pounder is a take and wanted by Texas.

Texas would currently accept commitments from OT John Turntine (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley), OT Felix Ojo (Mansfield/Lake Ridge), OT Malakai Lee (Honolulu, Hi./Kamehameha), OT Samuel Roseborough (Clearwater, Fla./High) and IOL Zaden Krempin (Prosper, Texas/High). The key here is timing of decisions for all five of the lineman. Texas is taking five OL's in the 2026 class, so that means one or two very talented prospects could lose a spot depending on how the dominoes fall.

And Texas may add another OL to the mix of contenders for three (Joel Ervin of Fort Myers High).

**********************************************************

Interesting we get Fitzpatrick's last visit, although does that matter as much in this era?

I wonder what the staff's actual preference of OT's is? From just piecing together all the articles it definitely feels like Ojo is ahead of Turntine. I don't know much about the Hawaii guy but it seems like he's the prototype that Flood loves.

Interesting, so Aaron Thomas, the new offer from Arizona who put us in his top 5, is a backup plan we're warming up according to that list.

Might be a natrual reaction by their writers at this point but at some point they will hit the show me stage for that coaching staff and that 5 star backer is gonna choose the better school, better team and staff not to mention the better NIL package. Hoping it starts this year

Yeah, I'm not that concerned about Sarkisian going up against DeBoer or really any coach in the SEC with recruiting right now. Our NIL game and development is just too strong for other teams to overcome if everything else is equal.

I do find it hilarious that USC once again went from long time commit to decommit to not even getting a visit.

I also have feeling that should the current course hold that some of these SEC fanbases will end up hating Texas the way Nebraska fans did for usurping their rightful place in the conference.

And the Aggies will be yelling “We told you they ruin everything!” to anyone who will listen.

In the last six months I have noticed a significant growth of a SEC Lost Cause War of Northern Aggression in regards to NIL and the transfer portal take hold amongst program specific media.  Especially from Alabama, LSU and Georgia. There is already a full antebellum narrative regarding pre NIL college football amongst these fan bases and a severe victim complex regarding their rightful place in the CFB hierarchy being stolen from them. Bama will get its shit together just merely by the fact that people will divest their 401Ks to keep the football team in the W column. If Ole Miss can have vending machines in grocery stores for NIL next to the lotto tickets, Bama should be able to be a notch above that.

COOL STORY BRO:

One of my best friends since kindergarten (Vandy alum) and I went to the 2002 matchup in the LA Coliseum that basically won Carson Palmer the Heisman.

Carson Palmer's performance was one for the ages.

He threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns. The Trojan defense held the Irish to just 109 total yards.

USC managed to post 610 total yards of offense. USC phenom Mike Williams starred at wide receiver -- he caught 10 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Justin Fargas* ran for 120 yards on 20 carries and added another four catches for 41 yards. Even the fullback, Malaefou MacKenzie, got in on the action by catching two touchdown passes.”

I gotta be honest. I'm hardly following recruiting any more. I'm just assuming that we're getting 90%-ish of the top targets and then they are going to backfill any roster misses through the portal.

It's great being the Joneses and all, and lord knows that we took it in the ass from Ohio State, Georgia, Bama, LSU etc. for far too many years and it feels good to turn the tables on those fuckers... but the ins and outs of recruiting isn't all that interesting to me any longer. Is that just me?

I think NIL made it boring. We used to have a bunch of goofy stories that each some would sustain for us 10 pages at a time about an uncle doing some goofy shit. We would have Señor Lampkin failing Spanish to not come here. We had Bru McCoy's will he won't he. Now it's just open bidding

'Consistent': No. 1 linebacker Xavier Griffin locks in Alabama official visit fresh off USC decommitment

Brett Greenberg (Bama 247)

A relentless pursuit from Alabama outside linebackers coach Christian Robinson has earned the Crimson Tide an expected official visit from Xavier Griffin, the No. 1 linebacker in the country out of Gainesville (Ga.).

The return trip will have a much different feel, however, with the No. 8 overall prospect in the country entering that multi-day visit as an uncommitted prospect. Griffin reopened his recruitment on Wednesday after being committed to USC since July 2024.

"I want to enjoy this process and make sure I explore my options because time is winding down and I didn't think that was fair to USC while being committed," he explained the decision with Bama247.

Despite the longtime pledge, Bama247 has continued to bring up the elite prospect as one to follow for future trips and potential change of plans. The Crimson Tide always felt like they were in a good position to earn one, even dating back to much earlier in the recruitment.

"Could this be another case of an early west coast commitment before schools closer to home (Alabama, Georgia) become the main threats?," Bama247 said in December. "We will see, but it wouldn't be surprising."

His mother confirmed the news and summer plans with Bama247 on Wednesday afternoon. Griffin also shared some quick thoughts on the change of heart and reason for the return to Alabama.

The plan is for Griffin to be back in Tuscaloosa (Ala.) from June 6-8, which is shaping up to be an incredibly strong weekend for the Crimson Tide. The group already included No. 1 Alabama CB commit Jorden Edmonds (Marietta, GA), four-star Alabama DL commit Jamarion Matthews (Gainesville, GA), three-star Alabama DL commit Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals, AL), our-star S Jireh Edwards (Upper Marlboro, MD), four-star WOLF Jaquez Wilkes (Wadley, AL) and four-star WOLF Khamari Brooks (Bogart, GA) among others.

It will mark the first time on campus this year and fourth visit to campus since Kalen DeBoer was named head coach. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder visited in the spring, summer and was in town for the Georgia game last fall.

"Growing up as 'Bama fan, I'm excited to take this opportunity and have my family along with me," Griffin told Bama247 on Wednesday. "I was able to make a dream come true and take my granddaddy to a 'Bama game this past fall. He has been a 'Bama fan his whole life and works in Tuscaloosa, but had never been to a game before so I was blessed to bless him. I have a great relationship with the staff, especially Coach (Christian Robinson) and the one thing he has done throughout this whole process is be consistent."

A combination of (Kalen) DeBoer, (Christian) Robinson and/or general manager Courtney Morgan have also visited with Griffin and his mother at Gainesville (Ga.) High School and at their home during both the winter and spring contact periods. Robinson has visited twice already and Morgan has also traveled to the Peach State.

"It's been going well," Griffin said of the recruitment earlier this spring. "Coach CRob has been in contact since he started recruiting me. He just wants me to get down there, talk with the guys who are there now and talk with the coaches. See how I would fit in there and in the scheme."

"It was a great time as always," Griffin's mother told Bama247 of the most recent time around Robinson and Morgan. "Good food, conversation and genuineness."

"I would say that (Alabama) has remained consistent with their actions and communication," she has also told Bama247 during the recruitment. "We talk to Coach Robinson several times throughout the week. They all continue to express that Xavier is the guy for them, and 'Bama is the place that needs and wants him. I tell him all the time it has to be a genuine connection and vibe and if you don't have that then it will feel forced and never feel like home. Coach Robinson especially has put forth the effort to make Xavier feel like he is a top priority for their 2026 class and I love that! A lot of coaches talk it, but actions always speak louder than words."

The 'WOLF' fit is also huge, as has been shared frequently.

"Being able to do more than one thing is always big for me," he told Bama247 earlier this year. "I know I can do both. I wouldn't want to just be put in a box. That also helps you draft stock with (scouts) seeing that you can do more than one thing. You're not just an EDGE rusher. You're not just a MIKE linebacker."

As has been well documented as well, Griffin is an Alabama native and his mother isn't very shy about her strong fandom towards the Crimson Tide. He's also got a high school teammate who is committed to Alabama in Jamarion Matthews. There are a few ties to Alabama.

Griffin also has official visits lined up with Ohio State (May 30 - June 1), Texas (June 13-15) and Florida State (June 15-17). Here is what he told Bama247 about the Buckeyes, Longhorns and Seminoles.

"Ohio State was one of my favorites before I committed but their defensive scheme didn't fit me, so I'm excited to see the new schemes and how I would fit in them. Me and Coach (James) Laurinaitis have a great relationship as well. He is an Ohio State legend, so it's pretty cool to see him in this role as a coach."

"Texas has been one to really surprise me and my mom as well. We went out there for the first time last month and it was just a lot of love shown, they really have a great camaraderie amongst the players and coaches so excited to be around that again for the official visit. Austin is like in between Los Angeles and Atlanta, so a lot different than what we were expecting."

"Florida State, I love Coach (Mike) Norvell's energy and who he is as a man. They are another program that has been consistent with me. I have a great relationship with Coach (John Papuchis) who is now in the linebacker room coaching, so that was exciting to see. I believe they are working hard along with the players to truly turn things back around. They are hungry to have a great season."

There is no timetable for a final decision as of now, but it would not be surprising if one was made soon after the official visits.
