Didn’t we have pictures of one of our assholes running around in a pedo bear suit at a bowl game they played in Dallas on the other site? Looked it up to see if they’ve played in a bowl game there “recently,” and they lost to Houston in the 2012 Ticket City Bowl at the Cotton Bowl.

He had the same 200 times as Guilbeau and runs about a 4.4 40 and is a strong tackler. Since he isn’t huge, I imagine that he may be a nickel candidate - Maybe safety though.

To be fair, every class has three stars that don’t pan out, and a blanket “trust the corches” starts to weave towards the Aggie excuse theme.

This staff definitely deserves latitude as they’ve shown an ability to pick and develop three stars. But there’s always more excitement when they bag one of the top acknowledged great 4 and 5 star recruits. As there should be. There’s less guesswork with most of those guys.

Watch the film, though!

Well, Texas took another three star recruit on Friday. Austin Anderson defensive back Yaheim Riley is not among the top 100 players in the country  by any service. Even more, he’s not even ranked among the top 100 players in the state by at least one.

So what in the world are Steve Sarkisian and Brandon Harris thinking? I mean, Texas should only be going after four and five stars. Right?

Wrong.

Just ask Cam Williams, Cole Hutson and Ethan Burke from the 2022 recruiting class. Or ask Tre Wisner and Trevor Goosby from the 2023 class.

How would this Longhorn roster look without Alex January, Parker Livingstone, Ty’Anthony Smith, Nate Kibble and others from the 2024 class?

Heck, even ask three more NFL draft picks from the class of 2021 - Hayden Connor, Gunnar Helm and Barryn Sorrell.

Facts are, “stars” mean little these days when it comes to Texas football. What matters most is a) the eye for talent that Sark and his staff seem to have and b) the development they bestow on the recruits once they arrive on campus.

Look, I was one of the inventors of the star-based ranking system. Literally.

I was in the room when we decided to go with “stars” instead of “chips” or “diamonds”.

I am well aware of the statistical probability that they result in.

But I have long held that 3 star prospects who sign with elite programs, programs like Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, etc., also have a disproportionate chance of making the NFL than 3 stars that sign elsewhere.

Why?

Because certain programs get more of the players they want, no matter where a player is ranked. Sure, there are “hits” and “misses” of three stars. But the exact same could be said for four and five stars.

I feel more confident than ever when Texas adds a three stars recruit. Maybe star chasers will disagree.

But to them, I say look at Sark’s track record at Texas. And look at Yaheim Riley’s film.

If Riley is a three star, then give me all of those I can get.

In addition to our 3 stars they posted some recent class examples from other programs in terms of 3 stars....obviously this will vary by year.

Mack took three stars late in the class, trying to fill it.

Sark is taking three stars early, and foregoing available four stars to do it. Completely different thing.

Mack took 3 star whites in wheel chairs in early February.

So you are saying that if I pick 6 at the bar early, I should take that as the equivalent of a 9/10, but if I take a 6 at the end of the night I’m desperate?

It depends. Are you one smooth motherfucker? If so, yes. You are probably taking that 6, early, because you are aware of traits that raise her worthiness.

Take the 6 early, put in a couple hours, get her an uber home, and then go back and bring the 9/10 home for the rest of the evening.

Berymon seems like a solid take. But the Florida guy is a beast.

Depends on how you look at it. Berymon is a better player on tape - he is much quicker and more tenacious. However, Guervil is 3.5" taller and weighs more. I would go with Berymon but with our large humans concept, the choice I guess is Guervil. He won't be as disruptive, but I guess he will be harder to move.

You are very declarative about things that are hardly set in stone. I'm not saying you're wrong. I have not watched either player. I'm saying that what the tape is telling you is not as certain about determining what kind of player they are in college as you make it sound.

That said, the staff isn't always going to be correct in their evaluations, and at the least I admire and appreciate your willingness to constantly form your own opinion, regardless about how right or wrong that opinion ends up being.

Good note from Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247).  Just some football thoughts about a handful of prospects, and on recruiting.  Without the usual clichés and bullshit.

Excerpts/key points (complete article spoilered at the end)

- Jalen Lott is the safest bet in the entire state of Texas (NFL potential on both sides of the ball, and very high floor)

- Keith Dotie is going to be a harder flip than previously expected (SMU commit, 3-star DL from Mesquite Poteet)

- Chris Stewart will sign with Texas

- There’s a sleeping giant in south Houston Fort Bend Crawford 2027 Top247 wide receiver Alvin Mosley

- Jermaine Bishop committing to Texas caught other schools completely off guard

- This will be Texas’ best offensive line haul since 2022

- Few programs have done a better job with true athlete types than the Longhorns, and they’ll continue to reap the rewards from it going forward (Jelani McDonald, Wardell Mack, Aaron Butler, Jonah Williams, Michael Terry III, Nick Townsend, Lance Jackson, and Jermaine Bishop)

- The 2027 in-state class is a better class top to bottom than the 2026 in-state class, and there’s more depth as well

- I like my crystal ball for Kaydon Finley Finley makes his decision on his fourth of July commitment date.

The Stampede: Thoughts after spending two weeks on the road seeing TXHSFB spring ball practices
Scattershooting thoughts on in-state recruiting following two weeks of being out on the road seeing TXHSFB spring ball practices.
Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

Horns247 has been out on the road the last few weeks seeing 2026, 2027, and 2028 from across the Lone Star State whether in the DFW Metroplex, Houston area, or Central Texas area.

Though more spring ball content from Horns247 is still on its way, the majority of the high schools in the state have already wrapped up spring ball for the year. That said, Horns247 sat down to jot down a few thoughts from spending the last two weeks on the road while gathering intel in the process.

Let's get into it!

Jalen Lott is the safest bet in the entire state of Texas
College Football and the recruiting world that builds it are all centered on projection, and few across the country project better than Longhorn legacy and Frisco Panther Creek Top247 ATH Jalen Lott. The son of Texas Hall of Honor member James Lott and former Texas women's hooper Fey Lott, Jalen has accumulated one of the most impressive track and field profiles seen on a football recruit out of the Lone Star State in recent years, as Lott has PR'ed at 10.89 in the 100M,  23.03 in the 200M, 14.42 in the 110M hurdles, 40.01 in the 300M hurdles, 7-0 in the high jump, and 24-3.75 on the long jump. One of the rare prospects whose multi-sport profile, frame, and on-field profile give him the rare ability to project to the NFL as a defensive back or wide receiver, Lott is hearing a variety of positional pitches but Horns247 eventually expects the Texas legacy to find a home in the wide receiver room as that's the position Lott has preferred going back to his sophomore year.

Regardless, I think he's an NFL player at defensive back or wide receiver and I'm more confident in that thought than I previously was and it's based off the fact Lott has been by far and away the best player on the field in every instance I've seen him in person for over the last year, whether it was under the lights on Friday nights, in school or club 7on7, or in spring ball practices. In the short time I've been doing this, prospects who rise to the occasion and stake their claim as the alpha and the best player at each event they attend tend to end up doing extremely well at the next level and beyond, and I think Lott has been the embodiment of that this spring. Though others might have a higher overall NFL Draft ceiling like Felix Ojo who plays more of a premium position, Lott is the prospect I currently feel best in the 2025 class when it comes to living up to or exceeding their rankings. This business is all about projection, and with the expansive track and multisport data Lott has paired with the on-field profile and the context of his bloodlines that feature several other division one athletes, it's hard to find a prospect who has such a high floor but also projects this well in the future. Lott has been a special prospect going back to his freshman year when he terrorized sub varsity opponents due to a UIL ruling that kept him from playing varsity his first year of high school, but something that's really caught my eye this spring is that Lott has been the alpha and the best player on the field at several truly loaded events this spring, and each time it wasn't really a question.

Keith Dotie is going to be a harder flip than previously expected
The first ever prospect I've ever come across that claims SMU as their dream school, Keith Dotie gives off vibes of being an extremely hard flip and has said such on record this spring as well. The Dallas native claims to have grown up wanting to play on the Hilltop his entire life, and after several trips to the nearby University Park campus he decided to push up his timeline and commit to the Mustangs where he's been happily pledged since. Texas and Kenny Baker have been making efforts here as Baker has gone out to Mesquite Poteet to see Dotie twice this spring, but Dotie told both Horn247 and Baker that the Longhorns were too late to the party and that he's happily committed to SMU with no intentions of flipping. That said, Texas will need to convince Dotie to get to campus as he's never visited Texas before, which will be easier said than done. The Longhorns swung and missed on each and every in-state defensive lineman in 2025, and with Dotie and Jaimeon Winfield currently posing as flips that'd be tough, Texas has a chance of swinging and missing again on the in-state group in 2026.

Chris Stewart will sign with Texas
Though it was expected as Chris Stewart told the Texas staff and Horns247 from the jump that his plans were to take visits elsewhere even after the early commitment to Texas, it's never a good look to schedule a handful of official visits to other schools if you claim you love your decision to be a Texas commit. Regardless of what you have to say about the topic of taking other visits in this day and age of college football, Stewart has stayed committed to the Longhorns. While Horns247 has had doubts about Stewart actually being in the class come signing day at different times throughout this spring, Horns247 feels confident Stewart will sign with the Longhorns after spending some time out at Shadow Creek this past week. Arizona State, Tennessee, and Texas are the only official visits remaining for Stewart and it'll be Stewart's first ever time in Tempe or Knoxville. He's been to Austin nearly a dozen times on the other hand, and Chris Jackson has done a really good job of keeping Stewart in the boat this spring. That said, Horns247 has swayed a bit on this topic, but after the last few weeks, our expectation is that Stewart will sign with Texas come December.

There’s a sleeping giant in south Houston
Fort Bend Crawford 2027 Top247 wide receiver Alvin Mosley is a name folks will need to remember. Even though he's a prospect ranked in the Top247, Mosley is still largely unknown due to the fact he plays at a school that just opened in 2023 as Alemta Crawford came just in time to relieve crowding at Fort Bend Hightower and Fort Bend Ridge Point. A dual sport star that has offers in both football and basketball, Mosley is a well put together 6-foot-2, 185 pounder that doubles as a wide receiver and point guard that recorded over 800 receiving yards as a sophomore in addition to averaging north of 30 points per game on the hardwood. Though other names like Tre Moore and Julian Caldwell are the main attention grabbers at the wideout position in in-state 2027 class, Mosley should be thought of as being on the same level, though I do think Mosley has the highest ceiling of the bunch based off his dual sport and verified athleticism markers. Expect Mosley to see a rise in his recruitment in the near future, as he's scheduled to camp at Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, and Ohio State this summer and it would not come as a surprise to see Mosley go four for four on offers. Horns247 previously covered Mosley when he didn't have a single football offer back in November.

Jermaine Bishop committing to Texas caught other schools completely off guard
Props to Texas for keeping this one extremely quiet, as it appeared to be unknown to everyone in the college football world that Jermaine Bishop had been silently committed to Texas for two weeks before announcing his commitment in the middle of the day this past Wednesday. Other schools weren't aware Bishop was headed to Texas or had moved up his timeline and committed at the time he did, and that was evidenced by the fact that Horns247 saw Bishop and his head coach's phone blowing up with texts and calls from coaches that found out Bishop was off their board from Bishop's out of nowhere announcement on twitter. In a time in the industry where it's rare that commitments aren't expected or planned ahead of time in the form of decision dates, it was a bit refreshing to see such a unique ending to the recruitment of one of the top players in the country.

This will be Texas’ best offensive line haul since 2022
Part of this comes down to number of takes at the position as Texas hasn't signed five or more offensive lineman since the 2023 cycle when the Longhorns signed five, and really four if you factor in that Payton Kirkland left the program after one season. Texas will aim for five, if not six offensive linemen in 2026 as there's a need at offensive tackle after only two of the six o-linemen from the 2024 and 2025 classes are actually tackles in Brandon Baker and Nick Brooks. Luckily there's a really talented duo up north in the DFW Metroplex in Felix Ojo and John Turntine III that Texas feels like the front runners for at this current stage, and there's other tackles or swing takes still on the board in Samuel Roseborough and Aaron Thomas who are scheduled to officially visit in June. Texas also already has Max Wright and Nic Robertson in the class and with the other names still on the board, the Longhorns' 2026 class is shaping up to be the best o-line haul since the 2022 cycle brought past or eventual starters in Kelvin Banks, Cam Williams, DJ Campbell, Cole Hutson, and Neto Umeozulu to Austin.

Few programs have done a better job with true athlete types than the Longhorns, and they’ll continue to reap the rewards from it going forward
Travis Hunter is a special player that has done remarkable things, but unfortunately he's done irreversible damage to the minds of high school recruits who think they have the ability to go both ways and play over 100 snaps a game at the college level. It's just unrealistic as there's a reason it was never really seen prior to Hunter, but luckily the Longhorns are starting to go on a nice run with athlete type prospects. Jelani McDonald, Wardell Mack, Aaron Butler, Jonah Williams, Michael Terry III, Nick Townsend, Lance Jackson, and Jermaine Bishop were all prospects who received at least two different positional pitches throughout their high school recruitments, and they all chose Texas. Though Texas will have to get these guys drafted to improve their track record of what I'm trying to say here, it's important that they're landing these guys because players who are the best on the field at multiple positions usually end up being some of the best, if not the best once they get to the college level.

That has a rollover effect to future years of recruiting, because if you're Texas you can say 'hey look at this guy who we turned into NFL Draft pick at this position after all these other schools tried to recruit him to play this other position, we think you're a lot like him'. When a high school recruit is in that situation, hearing that a school or coaching staff has had success with a similar prospect in the past will make deciding on committing to said school easier, as there's already a blueprint laid ahead that's clearly been successful for others. It especially helps when they're big name players such as Jonah Williams or Jermaine Bishop, as those prospects always have a larger following of the next generation than your regular three-stars.

The 2027 in-state class is a better class top to bottom than the 2026 in-state class, and there’s more depth as well
Not much else to say here but provide the context, which obviously favors the 2027 class over the 2026 class. In 2026, there's three players currently ranked in the top 32 (five-star range), in 2027, there's five players ranked in the same range. In 2026, there's 33 players ranked as Top247 level prospects, in 2027, there's 35. But more importantly, the 2027 class is stronger and deeper at premium positions, like offensive tackle. Since John Turntine III is classified as an IOL prospect, Felix Ojo and Bryce Gilmore are the only offensive tackles from the state of Texas in the 2026 Top247. However in 2027, there's currently six offensive tackles ranked in the Top247, and two other interior offensive linemen which more than doubles (8) the amount of Top247 o-linemen in the 2026 in-state class (3). There's also four Top247 DL in the 2027 class, which doubles the amount in the 2026 class. Texas being back towards the top of college football gives the Longhorns more of an ability to win out of state recruitments, but the 2026 class being a down year in the state is the main reason Texas has so much emphasis on out of state recruiting in this year's cycle.

I like my crystal ball for Kaydon Finley
Kaydon Finley was the very first prospect the Longhorns extended an offer to in the 2026 recruiting class, and he was also one of the first prospects Horns247 placed a Texas Crystal Ball for in the 2026 class. Though Notre Dame has made it interesting and actually happens to lead on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Finley, I think the Texas prediction accurately reflects the current pulse of the recruitment and I believe the prediction will end up being correct when Finley makes his decision on his fourth of July commitment date.

It’s interesting that Scruggs was the first person I heard say Finley, “may want to do his own thing” away from Texas. Yet he still feels confident in his pick for Texas while the larger trend seems to be pointing towards Notre Dame.
